Really like the sound quality of my Exposure CD 2010. Quite old but the dynamics is great for the price. The drawer mechanism is solid and has a nice healthy clonk.

A key advantage of a top loading CD mechanism is that it allows the design to employ spring damping to support the assembly. In the video you can see the CD mechanism bounce slightly as the puck is placed on top of the disc. When the CD is playing the damping helps reduce mechanical vibration and thereby improves the tacking performance. The servo does not need to work as hard and the bit error rate drops. The old Naim CD1 used this technique. A more current design is the Pro-Ject Audio CD Box RS2 T. This uses a StreamUnlimited CD-Pro8 mechanism. Low cost CD players use rubber bushes to decouple the CD mechanism.

I own the Rega Saturn-R and this CD player has a number of similarities with it. The LCD is the same. The top loader is the same, although the Rega does hold the cd slightly different. The Rega works as DAC and I suppose this feature can be eliminated from the board. I believe Exposure rebrands Rega turntables and I wonder if there’s a close partnership here where components are shared. I see no issues with this BTW as both brands are of exceptional quality. Thanks for sharing!

Interesting about the Marantz and Luxman. Isn’t the Luxman about 2.5 times the price of the Atoll? Which Marantz player are you referring to? I’d be interested to compare all 3.

@@dbx3197 the models were Atoll CD400 se, Marantz SA10, then the Luxman D-07. Atoll was detailed but lacked a large sound stage, felt Marantz had a warmer presentation and wide and deeper sound. These were all combined into the Luxman. I purchased none in the end a favoured the Rega Isis valve out put as it had similarities to the of the Naim CDS3 player. I do enjoy listening to the music and not the machine. Just to add more details it plays into a Buchardt Anniversary 10 active speakers. 🎵🎶

Big fan of top loaders, but that lid looks seriously crap. I have a Jay's Audio transport and it has an excellent, solid lid with a very satisfying action. Also, no AES/EBU, USB or I2S? Or analogue XLR? I think people want better connectivity these days.
Incidentally my son ran into P J Moore, keyboard player from the Blue Nile, in Glasgow a couple of weeks ago. Of course my son had no idea who The Blue Nile were...

“What more do you need?” SACD/DSD decoding. Yes, SACDs are still being made - mostly classical and jazz, which floats most of my boats. Most of they are dual layer, so there’s not much excuse for anyone to scoff at “compatibility”. Are they more expensive? A bit, but not a lot and usually not as dear as good vinyl pressings. Are the players/transports more expensive? For most “audiophile” units, YES but I’m using a reasonably priced Sony BluRay/universal player as my source and without a doubt SACDs sound better than nearly all red book CDs.
I fault Atoll as well as other manufacturers on the omission of SACD compatibility. In a sense it’s a chicken/egg situation. Give people the capability and the number of SACD titles will grow.
