I said this in the original Heavy Spoilers video and I think it's a plausible theory that I'm going to repeat here. SPOILERS: In the game you get a brief glimpse of a newspaper headline saying that several crops are infected with the fungus. The showrunners have acknowledged they will be taking out the spore aspect of the mutated Cordyceps fungus which leads me to believe the original cause of the outbreak, in the series, will be linked to food particularly grains and breads. The core characters in the beginning don't eat pancakes for Joel's birthday nor do they eat a cake, also Joel refuses the biscuits that the elderly lady is consuming because he's on Atkins and she's the first example of an actively infected mutant with CBI that we see. Sara also is bummed out that the neighbors are making raisin cookies instead of chocolate chip and thus doesn't eat any. There are several subtle hints to this being the cause. Including I believe the radio broadcast about Jakarta and the scenario there; I find it interesting that it seems the writers make a point to show the main characters not consuming any grain, bread or yeast products.🤔 It's just a "Theory Time, theory time, theory timmmeee..." 100% agree that the day with Sarah is a prime example of adding scenes that aren’t in the game to feel more connected with a character more since we’re not controlling them. Other adaptations try to do this but tend to feel out of place; for example, the bike race scene in Tomb Raider.
Not sure if it means anything, but the first scene taking place in 1968 and the outbreak starting in 2003... that's a 35 year gap, and we learn it's Joel's 36th birthday. Maybe there's a link there

I know that Heavy Spoilers, Reel Rejects and Screen Crush have a merch store and working relationship together and if you put out a comment it belongs to the community. I love all their channels I just would have liked a shout out to stroke my own ego🤣! But again it certainly could just be parallel thinking and if you watched the first episode enough and listened to what the screen runners have said about the show it's not a big out of reach theory; honestly it's pretty obvious and I would be surprised if the theory I presented isn't the cause of the fungus origin and spread...BGood
Easter Egg vid doesn't mention that, during the final shot, you clearly see the Clicker you hear roaming around on the rooftop to the left, and it lunges forward when it lets out that scream. It's just easy to miss because you're looking at the buildings during the lightning flashes and not to the side.
The kid is a boy btw, and the tendrils(the thing in the infected's mouth) replaces the spores in the show. It was an original idea they had for the game that they decided to use on the show
The shot by shot detail is pretty spot on. This show works well in streaming platform and in network television it would've never worked like it does in the streaming platform. The devil in the detail is just incredible.
People often think that Sarah died on Joel's birthday. She died in the super early morning of the 27th (0216 onwards). Joel's birthday was on the 26th.
From what I heard from other people, the infection couldve started when people ate foods that had flour in it. And both Joel and Sarah narrowly escaped from that by not eating pancakes, not eating the biscuits and joel forgetting the cake. But, idk. Could be true or it could be just a theory (a game theory...jk).
No one noticed that this show killed two kids in back to back scenes. Gnarly as fuck. Especially the euthanasia shot., but it gives a powerfully realistic backstory on how they're dealing with the infection. This show is a great representation of the game.
Your speculation about the possibility of a Tommy-centric episode showing him with the Fireflies etc is one thing I love about getting a TV series adaptation. It's something that wouldn't have worked too well in the game because that was all about Joel, and then Ellie, and their journey, so it's great that the team behind it all have the opportunity now to really build out the world. I especially loved the Shaun of The Dead-esque way they showed little signs of the outbreak starting during our time with Sarah, it's such a great little touch. Funnily enough, I have never once cried over Sarah's death, in all my playthroughs of the game, but I fucking WEPT over Nico's performance of the scene in the show. That shit broke me.
Just one other important note that I believe the person making the video overlooked. When the kid in the red shirt is taken into the FEDRA inspection area, we see that their pupils are also very dilated. Stimulants and psychotropic substances (which includes LSD) most commonly cause pupil dilation, because of the intro from the 1960’s we saw at the start of the show, it can be suggested that the child could have already been seeing hallucinations. This could also explain the lack of responses from the child, aside from the head nods. Could be looking too much into it, but I believe it to be an interesting idea.
Also, Joel, Sarah, and Tommy didn't get infected that day because Sarah didn't make pancakes or eat biscuits from the Adlers, as well as Joel forgot to buy a cake.
The spores are not in the show and I like it because it’s more realistic and that’s what makes TLOU so grounded and scarier, how realistic it is compared to Resident Evil or Days gone from example. The thing the old lady had in her mouth is called tendrils, the spores doesn’t exist and that’s why the characters doesn’t have the mask. The tendrils was something that Neil had initially but then change it for the spores. The spores doesn’t work live action because in reality they would be spores in the air and everyone would be dead. In the games the characters always put on the mask when they are close to a spore area and then instantly take them off when they should have spores in the air, clothes and hair, it would be impossible so I like it more this way. The tendrils makes the infected even more creepy, like if they weren’t already creepy enough…but I love this change. I also love how you get infected. In the game it takes like two days but in the show it makes more sense, if you get bitten in the leg it’s farther from the brain so it takes longer, I love that and if you get bitten in the torso, shoulder, hands, it takes some hours and if you get bitten in the head you only have minutes and that makes it even more scarier.
I vaguely remember that in the game the fungus began somewhere in South America, infected crops, which then ended up in food that was packaged and sent across the world, and those who ate it were the first infected people (and it ends up kicking off more or less at the same time everywhere as a result). I think one of the newspapers mentions food being recalled.
Someone left a comment on another video about it possibly being yeast(or flour?) that was infected (in the show). You hear that it started in Jakarta which is where one of those is mostly made. It just didn't fly with everyone...including me. Looked good but yeah...imo a second one wasn't necessary, TLOU had a fine ending which everyone could make their own impressions and theories about. But yeah it is what it is now
it was okay... didnt like the whole abby story line and the scene where he gets fucked in the ass etc....joel dying is fine just didnt like the way the story played out
When I watched Agents of SHIELD Gabriel Luna as Ghost Rider or as the terminator sounds just like Tommy, when I go back on playing the game. To myself I was like: “Yup, he fits the role”.
They talk about that talk show intro on the podcast for the first episode and I like the rationale behind it, which, if I recall correctly, is that often in these kind of apocalyptic shows or films, someone predicts something happening like that and then it happens immediately, whereas here they have people talk about something that could potentially happen at some point in the future, well in advance, about 40-50 years before it actually does happen in the timeline of The Last of Us so in context it's a foreboding warning disconnected to the events actually happening.
I love how the guy noticed and pointed super small details like posters in the background and tiny words in the book, but didn't see the Clicker on the roof in the ending shot where it shows the buildings. I only noticed it cause it was pointed out on tiktok haha
I'm surprised that Anna wasn't discussed much other than the brief moment when Ellie asked if Marlene was her mother. Apparently, Anna will be Ashley Johnson. Who voiced Ellie in the game! She is in the credits. Maybe her scene was cut, or in a picture somewhere?
It's only the first episode dude. She's going to be in the show in a later episode, just as Troy Baker (Joel) is going to be in the David episode as James.
The background info for the fungus infection also helps explain why it doesn't seem to affect animals. Animals tend to have a higher body temperature than humans, so it would be able to infect humans, but not most mammals or birds.
I just hope they show Joel’s badass vibes , as the Robert scene was always a good way to introduce his change , but the soldier scene in the show , showed it too I guess
The addition of the intro section with the scientists also helps fill in those blanks as to why the fungi became a global threat NOW and not anytime before. And it’s for a reasonable reason.
Wait, I just realized something. The only two PlayStation franchises to get recent live-action adaptations are both made by Naughty Dog: Uncharted and The Last of Us
Breakdown was really good. I knew that Greg was disappointed about the future of the spores aspect from the game maybe not being part of the show, but they could replace the spores with the spraying of the tendrils from the infected. It would have the same purpose as the spores just none of the drawback of the reality that people would have to wear masks all the time. At least that is how would rework it for the show to keep it reasonably tie into reality which is what makes the show much scarier. Anyway enjoyed the breakdown and the reaction 👍👍✌out.
am i the only one that knows they wont be using spores in the show they adapted it to be something else for the show because irl spores wouldn't stay in one room
So far, this is proof that if you stick with the story, the original canon/lore of what is being adapted, you'll make something great. The changes seem to be made mostly due to it being a show and live action content. Otherwise, this is a great adaptation, something for Hollywood to pay attention to.
I think the removal of the spores is good because what the game displays is not realistic. Im sure people would attack them for not following science when everything else makes sense
This is like the inception of RUclips. The shows Sarah death scene is good but I still feel that Troy Baker's performance was just more heartbreaking especially how he quietly says "don't do this to me baby girl". Somehow that hurts me on a deeper level
My big question is how did the fungus been spread so quickly without the spores? Clearly, it was infecting a lot of people early on that weren’t bitten (the old lady next door for example). There must be another way for the fungus to spread.
im mean 8:22 i have a friend who wa born 11.09.2001 and im not joking or anything i was born 9 days later but 1 year before and for example for him it doesnt have big impact because he and me are not from the U.S so yeah but i never thought about it that he literally was born on that day

I really hope that the writers aren't going to try to pretend that Ellie's immunity somehow changes science, because in the real world fungal infections cannot be cured and vaccines for them don't exist. I actually think that by having that intro scene with the scientists it established this and shows how misguided the fireflies are as a group of revolutionaries trying to save a doomed world.
But they also purposely set that in the 60s. It’s implied that he means then. The possibility of a cure in this universe exists. There’s not some hidden plot that there’s no hope for a cure, whether one exists or not.
@@mattb7479 true, but that would be a major cop out in my opinion. Why even bother with the first scene? The game didn't need that scene in order to establish the world as hopeless and I would think the show would be equally as capable to show instead of tell. Also the only way tlou has shown to deviate from the real world is in pop culture, to suddenly claim that by the early 2000s scientists know how to create vaccines for fungal infections is a serious stretch of logic.
@@TheBatzFiend the scene was to introduce the cordyceps virus to the watcher. They talk about it in the after show. Originally they were going to use a clip from planet earth but decided it was more interesting to the viewer introduce it with these scientists. Despite trying to make it seem realistic, none of this is.
Conceptually and and in practice I think Abby is a fucking awesome character that’s naughty dogs magic is awesome characters fight me on it. I don’t care been a naughty dog fan since 2008 so I’m a real “fan”
The first scene was probably just a bit of a real world climate change fear mongering shoe horned in by some execs. That said, the climate always changes, just very slowly on a human to geological scale. We will adapt and overcome as we have forever. The only thing that it truly makes you ponder are the mysterious parasites/viruses in subzero stasis among the glaciers of Antarctica/Greenland and Alaska. A very real world concern. I’m glad it was a nod to a real world situation rather than a PSA. Sincerely, not a climate change denier but a climate change realist based on science. Yes oceans will rise over many years, my generation and the ones after (if they get off tiktok) will make applications and remedies for it but most of all we will adapt. ☮️ ❤
I strongly prefer the lack of spores. I did not want to watch them come up with silly reasons to constantly take off the masks because they paid for famous actors and refuse to hide them.

Kinda wish they kept the title card for after Sarah's death. It was such a fucking perfect way to do that in the game. Would've worked even better for the show imo. It's a little thing but still.
I really liked how they changed the stolen guns to a stolen car battery, it made more sense why both teams wanted the same thing. I also liked when Joel had that flashback to sarah when Ellie was in trouble and he beat up the guy that was a good change too. So far I usually hate when movies change the story of the game and ruin it, this time the changes make more sense than the game! I was convinced that Tess actress was Carrie Coon from Ghostbusters Afterlife till I IMDB them and it wasnt haha
Is tess the character played by ana torv? She's fucking brilliant. Fell in love with her from fringe. Probably still to this day one of the best TV series ever. It even has John noble in it :)
I’m hoping people understand that a lot will be changed from the game to the screen! This always makes people mad because they want everything to be EXACTLY like the game was but ……

I cant wait for the show to finish and we can see the full parallels with scenes in both the game and the show! They did such a great job recreating a few scenes from the game (the gift scene, driving scene, when Joel is lying on the couch scene, etc.) and I know there is so much more to come!
At the end shot of the night time city before the episode ends you could see a clicker at the top of the left side screen and building rooftop. Thats what you hear screeching.

I feel like Gabriel Luna it’s going to be a fan favorite with how much he’s going to capture Tommy and simply sounds just like him.
He's definitely going to be a fan favorite when he turns into a killing machine and goes after Abby's group with his Sniper rifle.

The old woman didn’t get it at the hospital. There are no spores. If you pay attention, you can uncover what caused it for her.

TLOU2 was one of the only times I agreed with the critics score and not the audience score on a game.

They talk about that talk show intro on the podcast for the first episode and I like the rationale behind it, which, if I recall correctly, is that often in these kind of apocalyptic shows or films, someone predicts something happening like that and then it happens immediately, whereas here they have people talk about something that could potentially happen at some point in the future, well in advance, about 40-50 years before it actually does happen in the timeline of The Last of Us so in context it's a foreboding warning disconnected to the events actually happening.
Killer breakdown especially with the side by side with game and loved the episode. Can't wait for the rest.
I love how the guy noticed and pointed super small details like posters in the background and tiny words in the book, but didn't see the Clicker on the roof in the ending shot where it shows the buildings. I only noticed it cause it was pointed out on tiktok haha

I'm surprised that Anna wasn't discussed much other than the brief moment when Ellie asked if Marlene was her mother. Apparently, Anna will be Ashley Johnson. Who voiced Ellie in the game! She is in the credits. Maybe her scene was cut, or in a picture somewhere?
It's only the first episode dude. She's going to be in the show in a later episode, just as Troy Baker (Joel) is going to be in the David episode as James.

The background info for the fungus infection also helps explain why it doesn't seem to affect animals. Animals tend to have a higher body temperature than humans, so it would be able to infect humans, but not most mammals or birds.

The addition of the intro section with the scientists also helps fill in those blanks as to why the fungi became a global threat NOW and not anytime before. And it’s for a reasonable reason.

I think of their going to get into the background of Tommy and joels years between 2003 and 2023. They would do it in a spin off/DLC game first
Breakdown was really good. I knew that Greg was disappointed about the future of the spores aspect from the game maybe not being part of the show, but they could replace the spores with the spraying of the tendrils from the infected. It would have the same purpose as the spores just none of the drawback of the reality that people would have to wear masks all the time. At least that is how would rework it for the show to keep it reasonably tie into reality which is what makes the show much scarier.
Anyway enjoyed the breakdown and the reaction 👍👍✌out.

So far, this is proof that if you stick with the story, the original canon/lore of what is being adapted, you'll make something great. The changes seem to be made mostly due to it being a show and live action content. Otherwise, this is a great adaptation, something for Hollywood to pay attention to.

This is like the inception of RUclips. The shows Sarah death scene is good but I still feel that Troy Baker's performance was just more heartbreaking especially how he quietly says "don't do this to me baby girl". Somehow that hurts me on a deeper level

My big question is how did the fungus been spread so quickly without the spores? Clearly, it was infecting a lot of people early on that weren’t bitten (the old lady next door for example). There must be another way for the fungus to spread.

I really hope that the writers aren't going to try to pretend that Ellie's immunity somehow changes science, because in the real world fungal infections cannot be cured and vaccines for them don't exist. I actually think that by having that intro scene with the scientists it established this and shows how misguided the fireflies are as a group of revolutionaries trying to save a doomed world.
But they also purposely set that in the 60s. It’s implied that he means then. The possibility of a cure in this universe exists. There’s not some hidden plot that there’s no hope for a cure, whether one exists or not.
@@mattb7479 true, but that would be a major cop out in my opinion. Why even bother with the first scene? The game didn't need that scene in order to establish the world as hopeless and I would think the show would be equally as capable to show instead of tell. Also the only way tlou has shown to deviate from the real world is in pop culture, to suddenly claim that by the early 2000s scientists know how to create vaccines for fungal infections is a serious stretch of logic.
@@TheBatzFiend the scene was to introduce the cordyceps virus to the watcher. They talk about it in the after show. Originally they were going to use a clip from planet earth but decided it was more interesting to the viewer introduce it with these scientists. Despite trying to make it seem realistic, none of this is.

The first scene was probably just a bit of a real world climate change fear mongering shoe horned in by some execs. That said, the climate always changes, just very slowly on a human to geological scale. We will adapt and overcome as we have forever. The only thing that it truly makes you ponder are the mysterious parasites/viruses in subzero stasis among the glaciers of Antarctica/Greenland and Alaska.
A very real world concern.

Kinda wish they kept the title card for after Sarah's death. It was such a fucking perfect way to do that in the game. Would've worked even better for the show imo. It's a little thing but still.
I really liked how they changed the stolen guns to a stolen car battery, it made more sense why both teams wanted the same thing. I also liked when Joel had that flashback to sarah when Ellie was in trouble and he beat up the guy that was a good change too. So far I usually hate when movies change the story of the game and ruin it, this time the changes make more sense than the game! I was convinced that Tess actress was Carrie Coon from Ghostbusters Afterlife till I IMDB them and it wasnt haha
Is tess the character played by ana torv? She's fucking brilliant. Fell in love with her from fringe. Probably still to this day one of the best TV series ever. It even has John noble in it :)

I cant wait for the show to finish and we can see the full parallels with scenes in both the game and the show! They did such a great job recreating a few scenes from the game (the gift scene, driving scene, when Joel is lying on the couch scene, etc.) and I know there is so much more to come!

At the end shot of the night time city before the episode ends you could see a clicker at the top of the left side screen and building rooftop. Thats what you hear screeching.
