    Hi! Regarding the butterfly comment, an actual butterfly doesnt appears in the video game, but I guess the series producers are using the butterfly to tell us something, let me explain myself:
    First, here some times I have detected the butterfly reference:
    1.- If you check the first episode, when Sara wakes up, the pillow has a butterfly logo on it.
    2.- When Ellie and Joel are alone for the first time, talking about the radio songs and stuff, she stands by the window and there's a blue butterfly on the window's glass.
    3.- Starting second episode, after the Indonesia intro, Ellie wake's up and a buttefly if fliying above her, and Joel is looking at her (Tess also).
    So basically what I believe is that the butterfly represents how Joel will assosiate the time he spends with Ellie, with Sara's momories. I predict the butterfly will be seen throughout the show.

    36:18 I think Tess wasn't fully in control of her body when the other infected noticed her and walked over to her. Remember, the cordyceps begin to take over the brain and though the human is still technically alive, they become automatons that the cordyceps control. The cordyceps in them recognized the cordyceps in her and the mouth tendril transfer was likely them joining her directly to their fungi network. Tess likely had to exert the last of her independent will to ignite that lighter and drop it.

    • @mediumvillain
      @mediumvillain Год назад

      She was definitely still in control, she was enacting a plan to destroy the infected and succeeded. If it reached her brain she would be completely incapable of independent thought. Ppl are reaching with this one and there's no reason for it since the show made everything clear as it happened. The showrunners also said that infected don't necessarily respond violently unless they're prevented from spreading the infection (obviously by the time they're clickers and cant see they pounce on anything they can hear). She was not running because she was making a suicide stand, so there was no reason for them to attack her when they noticed her, but the stalker actively tried to infect even though she was already infected.

    • @eme.261
      @eme.261 Год назад +1

    My reading of the kissing scene is that he noticed she's not resisting, and the fungus hive can extract more utility out of her if she's not injured, so this was the most logical way to spread the infection to her, (or speed it up in her case), the fact that it looks like some sort of romantic kiss is purely coincidental, but in the abstract it also provides the poetic imagery of the hive welcoming her in.

    • @georgia2321
      @georgia2321 Год назад

      yeah I think the way the shot was framed to make it look like a romantic moment just made what we were actually seeing happen seem *that much more* repulsive

    • @Manx36
      @Manx36 Год назад

      The fungus doesn’t think, it’s all reactive and the shortest action for the best results. The fungus already in her had reached her brain and was attempting to take motor function control. The kiss was just a means of speeding up the process and taking full control, the fungus in him was communicating with the fungus in her. Zombies run on their base instinct to feed, these things run on their base instinct, to spread

    • @AngryShooter
      @AngryShooter Год назад

      @@Manx36 I disagree, I don't think the fungi are capable of communicating with each other when not connected to the grid, they can only imprint their baseline instincts into the hosts and control them that way. The fungus doesn't need to be a thinking being for it "know" that it is more advantageous for the species to not harm a potential host if they are not resisting. Just like any other species, that would be an instinct it acquired along way its evolutionary path.
      But anyway, in the end this is sci-fi the rules are whatever the writers make them to be. I'm just extrapolating based on what I've seen so far on the show, which differs a bit from the game.

    Something to note about museum weapons. Most museums - at least in the U.S., not sure about other countries - will remove critical pieces so that the weapons they display won’t fire. So removing the weapon won’t have any sort of functionality.

    Even though I played the game and knew how it would go down I was somehow even MORE terrified in the museum scene than when I played the game! The fact that Neil Druckman himself directed this episode makes it even more perfect. And from the cold open showing how cordyceps originated in Jakarta it proves the Bread Theory was right. Which makes rewatching the pilot even MORE tense because you see how lucky Joel, Tommy and Sarah were that they didn’t get infected from eating any flour based foods.
    As for Tess’ ending, I think it was actually done better than the game. The scene of the mycelium (the fungal threads) going into her mouth was incredibly disgusting but the look in her eye when it happened showed that even though she was about to turn into one of them she managed used that iron will of hers to force herself through those last seconds before turning to burn them all. Stand and applaud for Anna Torv everyone!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
    Fun Fact: So Neil Druckman and Craig Mazin did more research on fungus and found out that if spores were as much of a threat as they are in the game that humanity would be completely wiped out. So they changed it to another scary fact about fungus which is that there are some species that grow so big that they can cover entire acres of rainforest in Brazil. So they added that instead of spores.

    • @pablozee6359
      @pablozee6359 Год назад +5

      I don’t think the origin is exclusive to Jakarta, but the show used it as a call back to the radio blurb in the first episode. I think the bigger reveal in Episode 2 is letting the audience know that grain & flour are the perfect substrate for the fungus. With 2003 being a year of record heat worldwide, it would be logical to conclude that if the temperature increase were sufficient to reach a critical mass enabling the cordyceps fungus to mutate and live in human hosts, then that would have happened near simultaneously in flour/grain other parts of the world. It would be a big leap to assume the old lady neighbor in Austin was infected by flour from Jakarta in the biscuits or cookies they made two days after discovery of the fungus living in humans in Jakarta. Maybe there will be more exposition in future episode prologues, but it seems the world would have deteriorated so rapidly if the mutation was happening concurrently in different places. The fungus that was already in its ideal substrate was in effect dormant because the ambient temperature had always been too low to allow an evolutionary mutation to be able to survive in a host whose body temperature exceeds 94 degrees F.

    There is great foreshadowing in the first episode that the fungus is in the grain/flour. Every opportunity Sarah and Joel may have eaten it, the pancakes/cookies/cake, they do not take. To answer John's question, there are no approved fungal vaccines. Fungi are as complex as they are weird, and there's even still debate on whether they should be considered plants or animals (currently, they're split off into an entirely separate third category).
    There are constantly vaccines in development for fungi just as with other medical conditions, but these have never been effective enough. There have been recent unexpected breakthroughs that might suggest paths for vaccines for very specific strains of fungi, but that was within the past decade... so for Professor Ratna in 2003, the idea of developing a vaccine for any fungi (never mind cordyceps in particular) might as well be as hopeful a fantasy as a target today to colonize Mars by 2025.

    I don't get everyone commenting on the wrench, they clearly had it zoomed in with blood all over it from the old lady, why would he put it in the car when they have no clue if the blood can affect you or not?

    The kiss = Tess was infected but resisting. The network sent her "stumbly suitor" to remove the threat she presented by accelerating the process, and her freezing was because she was fighting HARD to light that lighter in time - and it worked, because she dropped it before he turned her completely.

    This infected is a clicker. They use echo location to communicate. The overgrowth of cordyceps blocks their eyesight so they use sound to track their prey.
    Side note, the Firefly Joel rolls over when they enter the capitol building is Neil Druckmann the game director and producer of the series.

    This episode nailed it... and something this show is doing in a very interesting way is that not only the series complements the game but also viceverse for people like John's reaction who is imagining how would be a game of this series. The 2013 game version gets more value and deep with lots of gameplay in scenarios and details that are not shown in television and the changes that works surprising in both ways are absolutely good! God it would be great to be someone who didnt play the game and do it after the series, such a pleasant journey.

    Just have to say John and Tara make a great reaction duo. You play well off of each other with your quirkiness and comedy.
    Loved how they tied the mention of Indonesia in the first episode with the beginning of this one. I'd love if they introduced some characters in the show that survived in Indonesia and made there way to America. Maybe we can get some flashbacks of them telling about what happened during the bombing, people escaping to America and other countries around the world. Those fourteen people that didn't show up to work it would only take six of them bitten on their lower leg with the means to travel to the US, Brazil, China, as well as the largest populated area in Europe, Africa and Australia. That could be how it spread so quickly just like Covid with people traveling after being infected.
    Also when Elle couldn't have a gun and said she'd just throw a sandwich at 'em I burst out laughing because I got the image in my head of her throwing it, hitting a clicker that looks at the sandwich funny, picks it up eats the sandwich, then comes after her clicking the whole time. 🤣 Yeah I know that they wouldn't eat the sandwich, but that doesn't make the thought of it any less funny. Enjoyed the episode and reaction 👍👍✌out.

    the 1st stage of infections are runners/crawlers on the first episode, this 2nd episode is clickers (the mushroom head) and stalkers ( the one that has antennas and kissed tess before she sacrificed herself )... lets wait for the next episode for the progression of the infected...

    So, from what I understand, most of the effects are practical, and they filmed (at least) these 2 episodes in Calgary with most interior scenes on a sound stage with practically built sets and augmented the on location outdoor shots with cgi (adding texture/foliage and extra buildingsAlso, the fungus tendrils are completely cg, so thankfully, Anna Torv didn’t actually have a mouthful of spaghetti squash.
