The polar opposites between Nico Parker and Bella Ramsey's characters is so nicely juxtaposed in this series premiere where one fears killing while the other embraces it. The scene with Bella's character Ellie seeing how Joel just lunges towards the soldier and beats him to death, you can see in her eyes that's what she wants realizing she has to stick with him.
I feel like it's a bit of a different take on her character from the game. I don't really remember her ever embracing killing at that point in the story. In fact in the game she says something like "I thought we were just going to hold them up" during this scene after the soldiers are killed. It'll be interesting to see how her character develops in this version.
I don't really think it's fair to compare them because Sarah was just thrown into insanity and died before she could adapt while ellie grew up in that world and was raised dealing with death constantly
@@netflixandchinchilla I think it contrasts how the world changed. With Sarah, it was horrifying and she was crying after seeing Joel kill an infected. Ellie, on the other hand, growing up in an apocalypse, looks curious when she sees Joel beating a soldier like that. It's an interesting way to show the shift in mindsets of the youth.
Pro tip: listen to the dog when they are desperately running away from something or dragging their feet when you try to take them back towards that thing. Never played the game, but this episode got me hooked on the story and the characters.
First episode was so good man. Holy shit. Bella is nailing Ellie’s demeanor and attitude. Also loved how they made Joel and Tess’ reason for going after Robert more personal and more sense. Joel needed that battery to go get tommy. In the game, their reason for going after Robert was just getting guns J&T bought.
I love how they give Joel his own motivation to head west to find Tommy. Also, the music during Joel's drinking and pill popping is the match making theme in the factions mode. And the music when Joel first digs under his apartment is music in last scene of the game. Nice touches.
I like the way how Sarah pointed out Joel's t-shirt is worn inside-out. Show's a bit of her personality. Not sure if anyone noticed but it's kinda how Ellie mentioned to Joel that his watch is broken. Little by little along through out the series, they are starting to show how Joel gets closer to Ellie.
I think it’s fitting that Ellie is the one to tell Joel the watch is broken as for me, the watch is a representation of how broken Joel is after Sarah’s death. Joel seeing Ellie reminds him of Sarah both literally and figuratively when she mentions the watch
It’s insane how faithful they are to the game while still making it feel fresh. They did say they would adapt almost every significant moment from the game but I didn’t believe it until now.
@@rinshaolin94 reviews came days ago, they all said it’s very similar to the games especially the second half of the season. Also the things they changed they did it good
I love the choice of having the first infected person you see being the elderly immobile neighbour. It really showed you the ability of the Cordyceps to takeover and reanimate the host body.
As someone who hasn't played the video game, I was immediately drawn into the characters and the entire atmosphere. I also enjoyed your reactions because you both are big fans of the games.
Now that’s how you adapt a game into another medium, stay faithful to the source material while adding new bits here and there to flesh things out, excellent premiere.
I agree but as big fan and someone who considers the story pretty much perfect; the new stuff seems super unnecessary 😅 Kinda feels like movie novelization Still really good show so far. Much better than Halo
@@TheGrimStride It was very necessary, mandatory even, the games story is perfect but tv is a different medium, you have to change some things up to flesh the characters out & their motivations, if they stuck to the game 100% it would get very tedious & uninteresting, they really didn’t change much they just added more story to what we already got, for me this was a perfect premiere
@@TheGrimStride it's not a matter of "necessary". It's a matter of making it so the show isnt a carbon copy of the game, and explore things the game just couldn't.
I think there is a good balance so far in this episode at least. I am cautious with at least 2 episodes being fully dedicated to side stories/character arcs (First being Bill And Frank's Tragic Love Story and the second Ellie & Riley) taking up time between the 9 episode order (as one of the criticisms from the reviews I did read that covered the whole season expressed how rushed and less impactful the second half is).
The whole Sarah death scene is a great example how they managed to get this done. It is basically the same as in the game, yet it feels a little different, at least to me. The game just made me really sad, of course I was also shocked, which couldn't happen here, but this sadness was different. To me it felt much closer and uncomfortable, the way she squeals (I don't have a better word) when Joel tries to lift her, went right into my bones. We meet Joel as a capable man, who knows what to do, but when he held is dying daughter and said "Tommy, help me" or whatever, that hurt. It's just the first episode but I really like how the differences to the game are just enough to make it feel standalone and unique. We got the same or similar feelings just in slightly different ways. Tommy getting arrested is such a minor change, yet it tells so much! A dude in a bar attacks a waitress and Tommy steps in, is a great progession of the outbreak, it shows that Tommy is someone whose instinct is to help, not to look away (we got that later in the car, when they drive by the family who needs help) and it deepens the relationship between the brothers, they care for each other, even if it is inconvenient. And they don't waste time on "look what great easter egg we got here!" moments, which is great. Sarah wears the same shirt as in the game, which is great, yet it doesn't distract you from what's actually going on. Really great first episode, I'm so excited for more, this show will fuck me really good.
I have never been able to describe one of these as a "perfect video game adaptation". But holy shit, it finally happened. I cannot wait for the rest of the series.
i absolutely adored this episode. joel is one of my favourite characters ever and i ADORE how they wrote him, and how pedro acted him, especially his relationship w tess. i think a few ppl owe bella an apology over how they reacted to her casting - she's god damn perfect. i liveblogged this whole episode to my partners (who have never even played the games), i just had so many opinions to share!
The very opening for this series was completely different from the original game yet it was so freaking perfect! It described how dangerous Cordyceps was EVEN BETTER a than the game! And even the entire Outbreak Day flashback was somehow even done better. I have played the game 7 times already and thought I could prepare myself for Sarah’s death, but nope, I was almost as broken as Joel.
Amazing premiere episode. Really interesting way to have the show open with life before the pandemic therefore making it all the more heartbreaking when the outbreak happens and the world goes to shit. Also Pedro as Joel crying over Sarah’s dead body absolutely broke me. It broke me in the game but in live action it broke me more. Damn what an episode and great reaction guys. As a fan of the first game I loved this and can’t wait for the rest of the episodes. We truly weren’t ready for this show.
The crazy scene in the beginning - middle was one of the most immersive scenes i have ever seen on TV. i was literally ducking and weaving when the planes where flying so low right above them. Pretty good first episode; excited to see more
I am a newbie to this story - never played the video game and knew next to nothing about it until I saw the trailer a couple months ago. My interest in the TLOU was much more due to learning that the show was from the same person who did Chernobyl, which was one of my favorite shows the year that came out. All that being said, it thrills me to see how much the fans who are responsible for the videogame being such a huge hit being quite happy with this adaptation. As much as I loved this pilot, I can only imagine how much more fans seem to be getting out of this. Adaptations are usually rough, so appreciation this “win” for fans of this story.
One small point: I like that they put a Desert Storm sticker in the back of the truck. The little detail of Joel and Tommy being veterans definitely helps to explain how comparatively quickly they adopted a "kill or be killed" mentality as soon as shit met fan.
I believe the reason why this series captures 'perspective' so well is due to the fact that it is created by those who made Chernobyl, another HBO series, which depicts the occurrence of the Chernobyl disaster through multiple individual's perspective.
Anyone else have this surreal feeling watching the episode? Of like, "wow, they ACTUALLY made it into a show and I'm actually watching it." I sure did. Through the whole episode it didn't feel real 😅
Yes! It was like watching the show and replaying the game in my memory. Every recognizable moment was a little giddy shot of dopamine. I was in awe throughout the whole episode.
Nope you're not the only one. I felt the same way watching the episode. Every time an original line from the game was said I got a lot of serotonin. For example, the part where Joel asked Sara how she was able fix his watch and she was like "Drugs, I sell hardcore drugs." made me smile soo hard. Everything felt soo surreal hearing those lines again and seeing all of those scenes.
During the scenes with all the people running and screaming everywhere, I couldn't help but just smile; When the game first came out, one of my first thoughts were "I wonder how this would look in real life" and now we have the answer.
This pilot was amazing, what a good introduction and It felt nostalgic in a way like there was a voiceover of the original characters at times. I loved the little changes as an original fan, made things more interesting for me. I can’t wait for this series 👏🏽
Sonia I completely agree. I loved how they stayed true to the game, and the part that got me laughing was Sarah telling Joel "I sell hard-drugs" glad they inserted that part from the game.
Everything that I wanted, happened during the pilot. The recreations got me so excited, but the entire experience feels so NEW. The first episode was nailed beautifully. The entire cast feels so passionate and really bringing their A-Game to the table. I cannot WAIT to watch more episodes!
Yessss!! I just finished the first episode myself and see this in my queue. I was SUPER impressed! I loved all the expanded things they added in, everyone gave great performances, and I'm hyped to see how they adapt the rest!
Forget it being a good adaptation. This singular episode was some of the best tv I’ve personally seen in years. They made Sarah such a deeper character in half of a episode. To the point that I’m knowing she’s gonna die but hoping she doesn’t. Then am crushed when she is laying there dying. Actually watching her go fix the watch and the world slowly descending into chaos. See much more of Joel as a flawed over working yet great father then the flip when he just throws a infected child into the fire pit. The look on Tommy’s face when he knows Sarah is dead. Elle being the shit talking kid but with the slight change of her already being such a survivalist ruthless little girl that you really don’t get until half way through the game after the whole cannibal scavenger thing. Because of course. She’s an orphan born and raised in the apocalypse. Of course she is more ruthless and willing to just stab Joel off the bat or stab the guard. Overall great first episode
Having played the game, I had the biggest grin on my face the entire time while also having chills. This series is heading in the right direction so far
TLOU is one of my favorite games of all time and this episode was amazing. There were plenty of moment I got the chills and a sense of nostalgia for seeing it adapted in live action.
Pedro’s acting is insane and I didn’t really think it’s too much at first from the front put his side profile holy shit does he look like Joel from the side and the acting just sells it holy shit
The game’s intro had the truck crashing into the protagonists. But in the show that same truck barely misses them and they get hit by debris from the plane (i think). Just a nice little twist for the gamers.
Also, in the game, Robert is taken out by Tess and Joel, but in the show he's already been taken out in a fight between Marlene and her people (fireflies) and it was over a Battery and not "weapons" - alot of nice little twists to keep it fresh.
@@SolidBoss7 Wasn't too crazy about that change. Felt a bit rushed to get the adventure going. Felt they could have found a better, more exciting way to find a balanced between those two scenarios to make their meeting feel a bit more energetic and memorable. Otherwise, very good and solid premiere overall.
@@theprowler18 i actually felt the game rushed to get the adventure going. I like how the show let the audience fully take in where Joel has been living the past 2 decades. I played the game a few days ago and that part felt too rushed for me personally
@@theprowler18 i actually agree with you in a way. It wouldve been great to see the meet up/fight happen on screen but i feel like that wouldve slowed the story down a bit.
I did not play the game because I'm too sensitive to make choices - but I did watch several people play it on youtube, so I know the story and know what was coming - this is actually so much more personal. The game did such a good job (so good I couldn't play) with building attachments, so this was done soooo well. They are setting a high bar for future adaptations.
Dude, I’m so much more excited for the rest after watching the first episode. Great casting, great acting, great adaptation for the first episode! Hope it continues to exceed expectations!
As someone who's never played the game and knew very little about it, I LOVED this episode. I'm so invested. The atmosphere is great, the acting is great. I'm really looking forward to the next episode! Love your reaction!
The one thing that I think makes this even more of a drama is that this isn’t technically a “zombie” show. These infected aren’t undead. The fungus keeps them alive, so every time they come across an infected it’s still a live human and that may make killing them have even more of an impact than just shooting an undead thing.
I am so overly pleased with this adaptation. Expanding on characters, introducing new characters. I think Pedro Pascal is a better Joel. Never thought id say that..
I don't know if I'd go that far yet. It's quite a different performance from Troy. More reserved. Less cowboy feeling. But pedro is really doing a perfect job.
The mercy kill of the infected child and the contrast of Joel burning him was Erie and incredible , also showing how a leg infection takes longer to infect
It was just amazing, an as a player, as far as the ep 1, I am pleased 😀. Even the things they added for the sake of creating a story line, were just perfect. The accuracy just wow. As soon as the intro started I felt a rush of adrenaline, just the sound of the song had me hype. I freaking love the games so much. I can't wait to ep 2...

I absolutely love how that sneaking outside the walls scene felt SO MUCH like a video game. From the weird car walls kinda pathing them through that maze, to the searching spotlights you have to hide to avoid. Brilliant transposition from game to show.
Oh my god! I just finished the show a few minutes ago and holy shit it’s so damn fucking good so far! I can’t wait for the rest of season! Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have delivered and broke the video game adaptation curse! I first played the game in 2015 (the Remastered version for PS4) and I’ve been waiting for an adaptation of it since they first announced a film for it (which I knew would never work)! My heart is filled with absolute joy that this show succeeded! Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are perfection as Joel and Ellie! I loved hearing Gustavo Santaolalla’s themes from the game as well as some newer music (which I hope is new) for the show! Edit: Had to fix some things and typos.
33:20 They did that for foreshadowing, because the 80s song means trouble like Ellie decoded. Tess and Joel were talking about how they should stop at Bill and Frank's and stock up on supplies needed to get to Tommy, which means they're heading into danger without knowing it now since they weren't there to hear the song on the radio.
The music playing at the end was an 80s song, the notebook Ellie picks up when Joel is sleeping on the sofa, states certain songs mean ok/trouble from Tommys radio tower.
I watched this episode before watching your guys reaction and I cried both times watching the beginning scene, you’ve gotta admit, now matter how it’s done no matter what the characters look like, it’s such an emotional scene and you’ve gotta shed a tear when watching it
Turning on your post notifs! You're one of the few channels where you both have played the game and I just feel like I can relate to you 2 more than any other reactor!! So excited to watch this with y'all :)
It doesn’t matter how many times, in whatever medium, game or show, that opening always gets me in tears. It always breaks my heart. Man this episode is incredible. Everyone is so well cast, they knocked it out of the park. That’s how you do an adaptation, respecting the source material.
Wow just one episode and I'm in...it's fantastic!! Watching you guys completely geek out during the reaction is great and thank you for not spoiling what's to come coz I haven't played the game. loved the reaction x
3:21 Oh I missed that part about the "Vitamin C". That makes sense considering that it's 2003 before it was common knowledge that orange juice is probably even less healthy for you than sugary sodas because orange juice has even more sugar and none of the benefit of eating an orange in its solid form.
I absolutely love that there is this review AND John & Tara's. Greg and Andrew have in-depth knowledge from playing the game. Where Greg and Tara are absolutely blind going in. I love both versions. I hope you have both perspectives for all the episodes.
I am almost done watching the first episode of "The Last of Us" and going with a blank slate with this show. So far I am enjoying the premise. The show starting of with John Hannah and Christopher Heyerdahl was pretty good.

Im so happy Gabriel Luna is playing Tommy. He embodies him and has the exact same sound and ascent as Tommy
Luna's "Tommy" voice was amazing
He might of been my favorite part, his voice was damn perfect.
I kept saying that while watching that he sounded *exactly* like Tommy
uhm... isn't Gabriel Luna Tommy's voice actor in the games? im pretty sure that he is
@@daedalus3726 he isnt. however Gabriel Luna loved the game when he played it.
It was such a good episode and faithful adaptation. I cannot wait for the rest of the series
They specially said that they changed stuff on purpose.. You’re in for a ride if you think it’s gonna be faithful
@@rinshaolin94 reviews came days ago, they all said it’s very similar to the games especially the second half of the season. Also the things they changed they did it good
@@francesco8320 Alright i’m hopeful :( the games are my favorite of all time
@@rinshaolin94 well they gotta have some changes to have the og last of us fans interested in the story and be surprised as well.
@@Saiyan1229 i get it i just hope they aren’t trying to preach to the viewers and are strictly focusing on entertainment
How hard did Sarah's death hit? (Have played the game 5 times so knew it was coming)
Now that’s how you adapt a game into another medium, stay faithful to the source material while adding new bits here and there to flesh things out, excellent premiere.
I agree but as big fan and someone who considers the story pretty much perfect; the new stuff seems super unnecessary 😅
Kinda feels like movie novelization
Still really good show so far.
@@salomaogomes7311 💯
Damn. Very well said!
I love how they made you think there was going to be the car crash from the game. And instead it’s an airplane crash.
I think it was the same truck too !
I have never been able to describe one of these as a "perfect video game adaptation". But holy shit, it finally happened. I cannot wait for the rest of the series.
Arcane says hello?
@@krampusthestoryteller1416 at that time I hadn’t heard of it. But I do plan on starting it in a few days, I’ve heard nothing but stellar things
@@djman5667 Arguably the best videogame adaptation ever made, and for League of Legends of all things.
i absolutely adored this episode. joel is one of my favourite characters ever and i ADORE how they wrote him, and how pedro acted him, especially his relationship w tess. i think a few ppl owe bella an apology over how they reacted to her casting - she's god damn perfect. i liveblogged this whole episode to my partners (who have never even played the games), i just had so many opinions to share!
The very opening for this series was completely different from the original game yet it was so freaking perfect! It described how dangerous Cordyceps was EVEN BETTER a than the game! And even the entire Outbreak Day flashback was somehow even done better. I have played the game 7 times already and thought I could prepare myself for Sarah’s death, but nope, I was almost as broken as Joel.
i knew it was coming yet i still cried. this show really gonna mess with me even tho i know what happens 😭
Just wait till we get to Pittsburgh that’s going to be even harder
Oh God I spent the first half hour in pure DREAD
most definitely hit harder this time too :/ can’t fckn wait for the rest of the show
@@monsterking1973 I think the stuff that happened in Pittsburg with a certain two characters is happening in Kansas City.
man up
When Joel screams "Tommy! Help Me!" I just broke. 😔
Nico Parker, Thandie Newton's daughter is a rising star and she is going to do incredible things for sure.
One small point: I like that they put a Desert Storm sticker in the back of the truck. The little detail of Joel and Tommy being veterans definitely helps to explain how comparatively quickly they adopted a "kill or be killed" mentality as soon as shit met fan.
AMAZING first episode! I couldn’t believe how well they adapted it for a live action format. So expertly done
Not gonna lie there were a few times especially in this episode where I felt like I was playing the game again and instinctively went to hit square
My heart was pounding while watching this episode
I’m actually really impressed of how much they changed and yet they made it work so well, it’s good that they kept some of the more iconic senses
I played this game a decade ago and somehow teared up. Just shows how perfect the storytelling/writing/acting is.
This was an amazing premiere, can’t wait to see the rest of the show
Everything that I wanted, happened during the pilot.
Just watched the pilot with a bunch of friends online. Everyone loved it. Even the people who weren’t familiar with the game.
It was perfection. Really looking forward to the rest of the season!
Having played the game, I had the biggest grin on my face the entire time while also having chills. This series is heading in the right direction so far
TLOU is one of my favorite games of all time and this episode was amazing. There were plenty of moment I got the chills and a sense of nostalgia for seeing it adapted in live action.
Pedro pascal is one of the most badass actors these days
@@SolidBoss7 exactly. You can tell the showrunner/writers really care about the game
I'm liking how they changed the vector of infection. That little alteration really forms a more horrific undertone.
After just the first 20 minutes, this became my favorite show of all time.

@@jalenwilliams7067 same. I played this game a decade ago but somehow it made me tear up
Stop being dramatic 🤣
I know absolutely nothing about the video game or storyline. I'm here for Pedro Pascal. This was awesome.
The accuracy with this episode is incredible. I honestly can’t wait for the next episode 🔥
I like this version of Joel alot so far but troy set the bar pretty damn high
@@Simonsays90 Troy himself said he was so inspired by Pedro’s performance that he wished he could go back in time and play Joel differently
@@Ay3shizzle but that doesn’t mean Pedro did it better. An artist can hate his art while audiences adore it.
@@TheGrimStride whatever the hell you say lol

Pedro plays this role so perfectly
I can't even explain how much I love this
My mom and I specifically went in 100% blind. We are hooked! Cannot imagine anyon e other than Pedro Pascal as Joel.
The part where he says "Tommy Help!" was where it hit.
The anguish of a father feeling so helpless 😢
The mercy kill of the infected child and the contrast of Joel burning him was Erie and incredible , also showing how a leg infection takes longer to infect
It was just amazing, an as a player, as far as the ep 1, I am pleased 😀. Even the things they added for the sake of creating a story line, were just perfect. The accuracy just wow. As soon as the intro started I felt a rush of adrenaline, just the sound of the song had me hype. I freaking love the games so much. I can't wait to ep 2...
This was a great first episode! I enjoyed every minute of it even though I haven’t played the games. Can’t wait to see next weeks episode and your next reaction! I really enjoy watching this show with you guys. Thanks for making your reactions for others!👍😁🎬
The ONLY thing I wish they kept was the soldier’s dialogue of “sir, there’s a little girl.”
I’m glad you guys enjoyed the episode. This was an amazing episode to work on and proudly filmed in my home province of Alberta, Canada!
The music playing at the end was an 80s song, the notebook Ellie picks up when Joel is sleeping on the sofa, states certain songs mean ok/trouble from Tommys radio tower.
Pedro’s best roles. “Protect the child!”
33:37 building on the left there is a clicker on the roof that you can when the lightning strikes. So cool
I love how they subvert those little moments from the game, ur like oh I know that scene and they just go the other way a bit it’s pretty cool
I watched this episode before watching your guys reaction and I cried both times watching the beginning scene, you’ve gotta admit, now matter how it’s done no matter what the characters look like, it’s such an emotional scene and you’ve gotta shed a tear when watching it

It doesn’t matter how many times, in whatever medium, game or show, that opening always gets me in tears. It always breaks my heart. Man this episode is incredible. Everyone is so well cast, they knocked it out of the park. That’s how you do an adaptation, respecting the source material.
If anyone missed the reference: when joel moved the furniture to get his weapons, it shows dust particles in the air resembling the loading screens.
This was definitely a very good game -> tv show adaptation. I really enjoyed it, especially the first 20 minutes
Wow just one episode and I'm in...it's fantastic!! Watching you guys completely geek out during the reaction is great and thank you for not spoiling what's to come coz I haven't played the game. loved the reaction x
I loooved after learning 80s songs are code for trouble the end pans up to the skyscraper level with an 80s song in the background
"Take on me" is about to enter the chat soon
I love that they have quotes and even frames shot for shot from the game but also make a couple twists. Great show.
Fantastic 1 episode loved seeing the new stuff they added and man I thought I was prepare for that emotional again but it still hits me in gut 😢
3:21 Oh I missed that part about the "Vitamin C". That makes sense considering that it's 2003 before it was common knowledge that orange juice is probably even less healthy for you than sugary sodas because orange juice has even more sugar and none of the benefit of eating an orange in its solid form.
Crazy I just finished watching it too 😭 it’s amazing so far
I absolutely love that there is this review AND John & Tara's. Greg and Andrew have in-depth knowledge from playing the game. Where Greg and Tara are absolutely blind going in. I love both versions. I hope you have both perspectives for all the episodes.
