Can you do a video about where shading should go? You said eventually you’ll just know where to put it. But say you’re designing a tattoo instead of copying one, how do you tell which parts to shade?
I’m just not sure if I should imagine a light source being shined on the object and shade where the shadows would be, or if I should shade the parts that overlap, or where exactly shading belongs and don’t belong
Well kinda both if the lover lap is is at more of an angle the shadow it cast would be longer of a blend out and a more direct and straight on source would make a shorter blend length and other then that you imagine the light source and it’s range of illumination and the parts that wouldn’t be hit by any of that sources light those are you shade and again the angle the lights hitting it at will affect your blend out length
Yeah- I don't know why, but I just NEEDED to put ink to skin from the beginning... 😆 🤣 Yes- on paper I'm genius, so I COMPLETELY understand the logic after I see it, being able to PHYSICALLY GO ZEN to get the technique down AS FAST as possible is obviously THE HARD PART. Granted- your fluidity, sounds, and explanations make it SO MUCH EASIER, so thank you for making my scarring VERY minimal, and my passion strong!! Thanks brother and others!!!🙏🙏🙏❤
Tat101 is my fav I’ve learned ALOT with u guys but still having issues w riding cart and shading!! I did a great snake and my dog had to get sprayed by a skunk n bathing her n me walking in the skunk spray kinda messed it up n ppl are dogging me on it but with what happened I think I finished it and it turned out the best it could I literally put the color skin back on to heal skin better so I could go over it
I love watching your videos bro. Quick question, I can hear you wattage that’s high, what’s the recommendation wattage for shading? Because mines looks patchy.
I appreciate the videos I took art class in middle school high school n took classes after. These videos gave me the inspiration to order my tattoo kit and actually start pursuing my dream as an artist
I'm loving all your videos. I do have a question, and I apologize if I missed it in a video. If you're wanting to pack a small tattoo with black, do you use line black or shading black?
Yo !! I just tattooed the same scull from this video on myself on my thigh Ive been tattooing for maybe 2 2weeks maybe a little less but I've put in alot of hours and watched a lot of videos and Iearned quite a bit from you so thank you I can't figure out how to post the picture of the tattoo I did on me but I would love to hear your thoughts , ive been tattooing bananas like a crazy person and doing line work on myself with a rose and some numbers and captain Levi from attack on titan! My first time attempting shading was with this scull
I'm a new subscriber came across this channel and I'm impressed! This has to be the best tattoo tips channel I've seen on RUclips! You guys really come off very honest which I respect a lot. Also the information you guys deliver on this channel is broken down to the simplest form. It's actually the only channel I've seen where I actually understand everything your teaching. Especially for myself with a learning disability. I do have a question for you well actually 2 questions. The first question is what budget friendly cartridges do you recommend I have seen your reviews on the cartridges but for me it's really hard decision because I don't like buying cheap stuff. The next question I have is what type of iPad do you have to have to use procreate I've been told it has to be an iPad that you can have cell service on or Wi-Fi I've been told other things. I like to know because I want to buy one and I've noticed online you can get refurbished ones kind of reasonable also does it come with the pen to draw with and if not are there different pens and if there is what is the name of the PIN that you use on your design tutorials. Thank you guys for all the help priceless information and just genuinely sincerely coming off like you really want to help people. Much much RESPECT to you!
What’s up thank you for the question. So I like prime + carts and also police carts from cnc the my are cheaper but work well. And I use the iPad Pro. You can get the first gen or the newer ones but they all work great and just go with the regular one that’s WiFi.
Thank you for your video , i like your calm voice when you explain the techniques. I am a beginner in tattoo and i was wondering how do you deal with the client pain? I am always concern with that and because of that i dont go deep enough in the skin.
I got a question for you my friend, What side of the skin do you tattoo on when you use reelskin material and which side do you recommend the most for practicing ? Thank you very much for the videos, I watch every single one and many of them I watch more than once, have a great day.
if you use dishwashing detergent instead of vasaline it is easier to clean the skin and it does not remove your stencil as much as vasaline does if it is a lot cheaper
I just started and not too sure which needled to use on what parts. Like witch size needle I should use on my lines and same for filling in or shading.
My artist use the same needle he did my outline of my teardrop for my shaded in one the out line came out great the shaded tear looks milky and very light green almost not even showing up
Great video! Straight to the point with great tips! I'm working on a tattoo on my leg with multiple colors and I stopped cause I got nervous about shading and blending cause as I'm sure you know it's easy to make what could be a great tattoo look like shit cause the coloring and shading is off. I saw someone do a replica of the same tattoo but they did'nt do any shading and made it just solid and it looks like a 4 year old got a hold of a tattoo needle so before I commit i wanted to do a bit more practice and this is exactly what I needed, so thank you
The only machine tattoo I did on myself was like ten years ago, and it doesn’t look like a Four year old got a hold of a tattoo machine, it looks like a really loaded grown man with the impulses and mind of a four year old did it. That would be me before I had any clue how to set the machine up, what went where, or that you might actually draw the design before trying to chew your own skin up. I didn’t even have a barrel. I keep it as a lesson to never ever rush into doing or getting a tattoo. I should be pretty embarrassed, and I am, but I don’t show it to anyone.
do you have the stencils you use in the videos by chance posted for use somewhere? because that would make learning much easier if we had the exact image to use
Hey Alex, we don't have any stencils for use posted up to the public. But if you're looking to learn and tattoo along with the same design then you can check out our courses on our website! We have the artist accelerator program which is for complete beginners, which will teach you everything from scratch in order to become a tattoo artist. If you're abit more advanced and have the basics locked down then you can check out the 10 day beginners tattooing seminar, where you will have a guided tutorial and access to all the stencils used so you can tattoo along
Thank you for all your videos they have been extremely helpful! I do have a question if you don’t mind, how deep should the needles go for shading? I know for lining it should be around 1.5-2mm in order to hit the dermis, but for shading it seems like it should just be lightly touching the skin?
It depends on the affect you are going for if you do now put the ink ink into the dermis it’s going to lighten up so if your doing black and gray you can use that to your advantage but it takes practice to know how much it will lighten up just brushing the skin
Where can i buy those better fake skins? I bought some from Amazon and they are quite crappyans they are very thin which in a way is kinda good bc it's teaching me not to go too deep.
This man just called me a noob🥲 Anyways, thank you. I am 14 and I can do really good tattoos and my mom wants me to design her a tattoo. I take this very seriously and it's a Honor. So thank you so much for making this video so I can shade better!
I heard you mention voltage and that your machine has 4 stroke settings but didn’t mention what machine you were using. What was it? I want to make the move to just one multi stroke pen style machine and would love to have some recommendations! Love the channel, thanks for everything over the years.. 🙌🏼
It may sounds stupid, I started to tattoo on human skin after around a year on realskin, why does my mags stick on the skin, i use a correct voltage, stretch the skin correctly but sometimes the needls seems to stuck in the skin….
Dabbing is the way to go when you are lining and don’t want to loose your stencil. When it comes to shading and coloring it is ok to wipe because your tattoo is already lined and you won’t loose the design. I hope this helps. 🙏poppy
This is really annoying, you have already done a video like this not that long ago. And you are still not explaining the theory behind where and why you are shading in traditional tattoos. Give an explanation on imaginary light sources and why you chose an area to shade. Please stop regurgitating the same information that you already shared a couple weeks ago.
Thank you- this was awesome! Am just starting traditional shading with mags- super helpful!👍

A good way to practice the idea is to sketch spheres and cups idk any item with different light source angles and levels and just study it all
When I have trouble with shading, I draw a little light bulb and imagine where that lights hitting and then how the shadows look, then replicate it.
Learn how to draw first
Yeah- I don't know why, but I just NEEDED to put ink to skin from the beginning... 😆 🤣

Nice!
DAMN! Shading at a 9.5v seems insane. I'm just learning and I'm shading at a 6.5V. I'll get there someday!
I'm loving all your videos. I do have a question, and I apologize if I missed it in a video. If you're wanting to pack a small tattoo with black, do you use line black or shading black?
shading black. i highly recommend Dynamic triple black for packing💜
Wait people use different colors for lining and shading?
"Rist it or loose the Chance" ima get better and you're videos help me bro🤙💯
hello..thanks for sharing..godbless
Another great instructional video. I always try to learn something new with each video! Thanks! 🙏poppy

Thanks my guy! I feel like if you really nice penmanship it probably helps with the whip shading part
I been looking for a video showing different settings for the power.
I don’t know if I just missed it in the video but what needle are you using?

Perfect bro
Thanks for making this video
Heck yeah dude!
if you use dishwashing detergent instead of vasaline it is easier to clean the skin and it does not remove your stencil as much as vasaline does if it is a lot cheaper
How do you keep the needle from dragging and getting stuck in the skin?
You could even hear the difference between that reel skin & the cheap shii I have at home hahah
Facts lol I got the cheap Amazon shit that came with my machine lmao
Cheap skins Sucks Like HECK that I’ve gotten off of Amazon😂🤣

Iv got a mast tour pro what volts do you think I sould run when doing this same shading on the same tattoo on fake skin

I have a pen machine too and I was trying to shade at 6.5v and found it so frustrating. Tomorrow I will try a higher voltage
This is great
Thanks for the video
No problem!
It would be nice if we could download the design to compare the finish product to yours.
i run coils, are the curved mags supposed to have so much play in the tubes?
Hey guys can you tell me how to mix the witch hazel/ water for the gray wash 50/50?
What voltage/watts should you be running at?
Great video. What size mag do you recommend for first time shading?
Start small
A 7 or a 9 should be a safe bet
Good morning sir from Philippines
What needle did you use mostly, a flat or a curve mag? Thankyou so much for your video its help me a lot hehe 💯❤️🤌🏼
Sick!
Does anyone know what he uses to wipe away the excess ink mid tattoo?
Cool, thank you✌️👌👍🤘
How do you make sure it doesn’t smudge when you shade?
Can u do one doing it with grey wash pls?
What kind of needle are you using to shade in this video
What voltage do you use in this technique
Brandon, when you do your black and grey shading how do you mix your ink and with what kind of water ? Thank you for your time.
Distilled water
How much do you dilute it ? Like 1/3 ink 2/3 water
@@Tattooing101 thank you for your help
What are you rubbing on it is that water?
Hey ! Great video what stroke were you on ? I saw you said voltage was in between 8-10 for this one
My stole was a 3.5
what are you using to wipe the ink off?
New subscriber ✌️
What needle are u using ??
Thank you for all your videos they have been extremely helpful! I do have a question if you don’t mind, how deep should the needles go for shading? I know for lining it should be around 1.5-2mm in order to hit the dermis, but for shading it seems like it should just be lightly touching the skin?

@tattooing101 i was also wondering what needle you're using
nice
What if you’re using a round mag ? Is the shading different?
What in the hell is a round mag?
@@bobbydazzle6075 literally a ROUND MAG. There is flat and there is round. Less damage to the skin.
@@Mommamia_ink I think you’re talking about a curved mag or a round shader. There’s no such thing as a round mag
@@bobbydazzle6075 thanks for the correction.
You guys should start shipping the skins you use, outside the US :(
Where can i buy those better fake skins? I bought some from Amazon and they are quite crappyans they are very thin which in a way is kinda good bc it's teaching me not to go too deep.
Reelskins or frankenskins they both have websites
frankenskins is the best!!!!!!!
Grazie 🙋
This man just called me a noob🥲
Anyways, thank you. I am 14 and I can do really good tattoos and my mom wants me to design her a tattoo. I take this very seriously and it's a Honor. So thank you so much for making this video so I can shade better!
What voltage were you on ?
It depends on the tattoo I’m doing but between 8-10
What needles are good for filling? I am new....
That’s some thing they should teach you in your apprenticeship.
What size man!!!
Which needle?
I heard you mention voltage and that your machine has 4 stroke settings but didn’t mention what machine you were using. What was it?
I want to make the move to just one multi stroke pen style machine and would love to have some recommendations!
Love the channel, thanks for everything over the years.. 🙌🏼
What brand of ink ? What speed/voltage?
Sorry voltage is said lol
It may sounds stupid, I started to tattoo on human skin after around a year on realskin, why does my mags stick on the skin, i use a correct voltage, stretch the skin correctly but sometimes the needls seems to stuck in the skin….
You can try to apply a thin layer of vaseline on the area you're tattooing, that way it'll help the needles to glide across the skin and not snag.
@@Tattooing101 that‘s also what I always do and still sometimes snag, I will try maybe with a bit more of vaseline, thanks a lot for your response 😇
Sounds like you are fucking people up dude.
Thank you soo much for your amazing and insightful video...
But please don't speed up your video.... 😅
I always get confused of where I should add the shading
I need to practice my lines first
Doesn't that hurt the people with you rubbin the extra ink off with a dry towel?
If you're tattooing on actual people, then you should avoid wiping with a dry towel because it will definitely hurt more.
Is learning through these videos better than an actual apprenticeship?
Sounds like your running on a 9 level and are you running with 1205 rl
voltage
Instagram handle? ... Need to ask you a question
Dont wipe the skind dap it
Dabbing is the way to go when you are lining and don’t want to loose your stencil. When it comes to shading and coloring it is ok to wipe because your tattoo is already lined and you won’t loose the design. I hope this helps. 🙏poppy
Should’ve learned before I tattooed half my body with shit
if you could reach out to me. I have serious question. when you have time
This must be a decent fake skin, I can't seem to get the same effect that easy on this cheap Amazon stuff
