Despite using fake skin, this is one of the best lining tutorials I have seen (and I’ve seen a lot). The key value is in the theory, which is dripped out at appropriate moments through the demonstration. Don’t be tempted to skip and watch bits and pieces, this one’s well worth being patient. Great work!
Appreciate the support, Steven!
Yes I've watched alot. Daniel Yuck does awesome vids...he is really talented. I'm enjoying this vid and learnt something I didn't know. Really cool
You fucked up the arrow on the feather part... So sad everything else was 👍 Stop rushing your work... I give you a 0% for fucking up...

That's how a tutorial supposed to be. No click baits, no chit chat, pure knowledge from experience. Kudos ❤
Laser surgery...HOW TO ERASE STUPID TATTOOS!
Q-switched lasers - which release energy in a single, powerful pulse - are often the treatment of choice for tattoo removal. A special type of laser - called a Q-switched Nd:YAG - might be used on darker skin to avoid changing the skin's pigment permanently.
I'm a beginner with extensive drawing experience, 25 years, this is by far the ultimate training for understanding how to succeed in tattooing. Great job! Looking forward to seeing more. Kristine ❤
I've been tattooing for over a decade, and I'd have to say that the Vaseline really isn't for the needle to be gliding. In my experience, the little Vaseline applied makes the excess ink much easier to wipe off. And that's basically the idea of the Vaseline. Technically, you need no help gliding the needle..
dab don’t wipe 👌🏼
Dude those first 10min are solid gold, ive seeen a lot of tutorials (most of them really great) but none gave me those tips on holding the machine like that or turning it. Thank you!
Your description of what to do/not to do is so thorough and easy to follow but your accent is the most captivating part
LMAO, thank you
This tutorial just taught me more than a whole year of an apprenticeship has. Thankyou so much!
Really? What did you actually learn then?

Bro you literally just killed this tutorial.. only video needed.. bro your gold because that's what your throwing out in the universe. My God
I am self taught, this is honestly one of the best tutorials I've seen.
This is the most useful and detailed tutorial I've ever watched. I actually had to write down notes. Thank you so much for making this and sharing all of that knowledge!!
ye , me too
@@andrewpeno8259 , 2:51 2:52
Same!!! I immediately @1:27 decided to write notes
I’ve just begun researching and this could definitely be a master class for beginners. I’m so thankful to have seen it here! I appreciate you for taking your time out to be so thorough…thank you!! This was very informative, straight to the point, & covered simple but vital steps to learning to tattoo. 💯🙌🏾💐
By far the best tutorial I’ve ever watched about tattoo lining. It makes it so much sense. It makes it so much easier. I very knew at this and it helped tremendously.. thanks
I've been self teaching for a while now and my linework was pretty good but I followed some of your advice on here and saw a dramatic improvement my linework is very crisp now, Thankyou very much
Way to go man! Happy for you
I wanted to tell you thank you so much for this. I'm brand brand new in the tattoo world and definitely learned so much watching this. Definitely looking forward to watching more of your videos!
Happy to help!

Thank you for your support! :)
Bro the pinky technique omg man thats so revolutionary it blew my mind!!!
I wrap the fake skin around something similar to the size of an arm or leg as tattooing on a flat table spinning the the design around at will isn’t going to help you prepare very well. I tattoo rounded the top of an upholstered chair held on an angle… hope this tip can help some folks out 😊
Thank you. My mentor suggested hard rolling a towel and putting the fake skin on it to simulate an arm. He also agrees with keeping your silicone client stationary. I'mma try it that way today.
Great tip! Thanks!
Genius tip! Thank you for taking the time to post it!
That ink flow explanation makes so much sense and explains all the issues I was having in chrisp detail, nobody had an answer for why it was splattering all over the place, and it wasn't taking ink because I was hanging the needle out too much..
Thanks for this tutorial it's jam packed with good details
Yeah right 😂
I'm a beginner at 40 and I didnt know where to start. This video is such a breath of fresh air beginning to end.I'm looking to my journey.
I am intrigued by tattooing, despite the fact that I'm most likely never going to tattoo. This is still the best tutorial video I have ever seen on tattooing. Brilliant! Answered all of my questions.
This is the best video I have found. Just starting out, this is extremely helpful.
dude, in the first 2 minutes you gave me more valuable intel than in 4 years of other videos. Thank you so much
Iv seen alot of videos about this exact subject and was always left with questions and stuff not clear but this is the best one i have seen by far not even a close second. He gave nothing but important information and no wasted time or bullshit that gets people sidetracked
Appreciate the love and support!
This is the best tutorial I have seen on line work and appreciate how you take the time to explain every question that pops in someones mind (my mind anyways) lol..as they are learning this new art. You keep things simple and straight to the point, which makes things way easier to understand. You have an amazing knack for teaching. I have learnt so much from your videos and emails and am looking forward to watching/reading more! Thank you!
I’ve been watching tutorials and tip videos for the last 5 months and taking notes.. I spent alot buying quality everything and the rest of my setup is arriving next week.. I took notes from the videos over the last several months and thought I had all the info.. I click on this video and it has all the info I already had and so much more. By far the best tattoo tutorial on RUclips (and I’ve watched a ton, if not all of them)
So thank you so much for taking the time to make this video with all of the great information and then some. Speaking for anyone learning that’s been lucky enough to find this video.. than you from us all! We appreciate you and this video very much!
I kind of apply most of these techniques to my every day drawings so it's comforting to know that do these already. I've just never done it on skin. I've drawn on a lot of skin, which I'm sure feels very different. You're videos have been informative though so thank you! I'm looking forward to being able to do some real tattoo work one day.
Dude this has to be one of the best tutorials for line work I have ever seen. helped me out so much, thanks heaps
You're very welcome!
So straight to the point. You’re a talented educator- thank you soooo much for this Vid!
Brilliant and clear Tutorial. Thanks
You just changed my life with that pinky to thumb stabilizing tip! Thanks so much!!!!
Since watching your videos and using your techniques my lines and color packing has improved. Thank you for your time and your knowledge! You are an absolute gem!
You're welcome!
You’ve hit all the points perfectly. I’ve recommended this video to the apprentice. I line the same way.
An apprentice doesn't need RUclips tutorials. Just disease spreading scratchers and penny pushers
@@nathanprentice7230 not only
@@nathanprentice7230 the problem is much more with gatekeeping ppl who think tattooing is some elitist magic work instead of teachable (and learnable) thru all sorts of media. those ppl are the ones creating living room scratchers in the first place
@@nathanprentice7230 I can’t wait until all American traditionalists die out, imagine being pretentious enough to call people penny pushers and scratchers when your best work is probably traced from a Sailor Jerry piece just with different colors and a pop culture reference to keep it somewhat original. best video about lining by far, and i've seen basically every single one on the internet; thank you and God bless, subscribed
I think everyone has nailed it with the compliments. I just wanted to throw my hell yeah out there, and figured my comment would help the channel. Thank you for your time, and useful knowledge.

Great hand method for lining towards self….Flip the machine, very patient artist… Fantastic content
Im about to tattoo for the first time in a few hours or so and am so happy that i came across this video. You touched on many things that i would have had to learn the hard way if at all that ive never heard someone else talk about. My skin thanks you lol

THANK. YOU. 1 hour and 5 videos later and that first 10 mins was all I needed 👌
Everything you have said as far as mistakes, is literally something I’ve experienced and I can definitely say YOU ARE A GENIUS FOR THIS TUTORIAL! Thank you so much! (No, the mistakes weren’t on people😂 just synthetic skin).
Thank you so much for this!!! I've been thinking of getting into tattoing for a while now, and the past few months I became sure this is something I want to do! I am lucky cause I have wonderful people around me supporting me, just a couple of days ago my boyfriend gifted me a tattoo pen. I will binge your tutorials and try to soak up everything. Lovely of you to share your skills and tips with the world, I am very greatful!!
Im in NZ and it's just hit 12am on 1/1/23. Happy new year and thanks for the awesome tut. Im a registered nurse looking at pursuing tattooing and Im so glad your video was the 2nd video I've ever watched re: this topic (and the better one out of the two). Your my first sub for the year 🥰
This video is so good I'm watching it for the 3rd time, & taking notes!
Dude y'all are awesome. This is extremely informative. I started a long time ago, but stepped away for quite a few years. Finally getting back into it, so I'm brushing up on things. This is a great video, thanks!
Thanks for your support man, you got this!
I have about 6 months of classical training in a shop and then I moved on and now I just practice on myself, my wife, and fake skin. It's more of a hobby than a career for me. The issue is I had a very basic set of ground rules and training but it was all very basic and beginner stuff. This video helped me more than any video I've been looking at recently. The techniques and theories that you talk about were so clear and concise. Thanks mate !
And I definitely did like that other commenter and took down notes lol normally I skip through videos like this for the good bits but I watched all 37 minutes of this one! Pretty captivating stuff
Glad you put out this video showed me alot of techniques and showed me what I was doing wrong. Always a pleasure to watch you tattoo Nathan and always a pleasure to learn from someone who cares to see others succeed. Thx for the accelerator program with out this program I would be learning the correct way. Thx again Nathan.
Any time Mike!
You're obviously a scratcher. Try not to destroy too many people with your nonsense
Thankyou for the detailed explanation! About the tattoo and machine + cartridge depth etc!!! Fantastic!!
Thank you so much for this! I have learned more from this video than I did in most of my apprenticeship 😅
this is next level didactics. best tattoo tutorial i've ever got to watch. i struggle a lot with line quality and rellying in poor tutorial and tip videos... can't blame them, tattoo is not easy to teach. but well, with this one, i actually felt that i might have learned something.
Noticed an immediate impact in my lining ability after watching this video. Still not very proficient, but practice and time of course. I will say, the things hanging up my lining are definitely things that I can tell your advice is solid on but I have trouble executing, like the reverse grip on the machine, and moving with my shoulders. I can tell that I'll improve more once those things get more natural. Thank you for your wonderful insight!
now this is good shared knowledge. and love that there is no ego involved. been doing ink for 20 yrs and still can't get over all the b.s that some people have. i now only do family and friends as i just couldn't continue with they wave of people behaving like movie stars and people wanting to trade for ink. it has taken me years of hard work to learn this craft. thats why i don't trade. and that's why only my family and friends get my work as they watched me learn and progress to where i am at. no apprenticeship. talked and watched pros 30 yrs ago. it became a personal journey and i am grateful to have learned.
Such a great in depth tutorial thank you so much for taking the time to do all this work for us!
I’m new to the tattoo method I have tattoos done professionally I just like to start doing my own I’m learning alot watching your videos
I learned more in the first 3 mins than I did in my actual apprenticeship lol. I figured it out on my own but nobody’s spelled it out for me before, they just had me jump to tattooing on fake skin and doing it until it came out right
Atleast they didn't have you jump straight onto real skin 😬
Man... 3 fraking minutes 3 fraking minutes I have been here and I know more about how to make lines than in the past 3 months. Then I go down commments sectiong and Is full of people like me that is amazed about the great tutorial.
I haven't seen it at full but from advance THANK YOU this is AMAZING.
Thank you Nathan and Brandon for doing these helps understand what i been doing wrong.
Cool bro, used to do tatts 8 years ago and I want to restart, after 5 min watching this it all came back, remembered things I thought were forgotten
Im on minute 11 and i've learned more about line control than the rest of the youtube videos about the subject all put together. Thank you for all this wisdom
You’re welcome
Thank you YT recommendations - this is awesome
Good tips. Everyone has a different tattooing technique and method of pulling lines. I went to school to become a tattoo Artist and my instructor taught us to never stop mid-line and to pull the line to a intersecting point or line end whenever possible. I like your machine setup.
What machine dose he have again? It was hard to hear
This was so helpful! Great visuals, great descriptions and really straight forward information! Thank you
I just wanted to leave a quick message as I have found this tutorial amazing. I've only been practicing tattooing for around a month now and have struggled with straight lining and depth control. This has helped immensely and I will be putting my new found skills into practice for sure. You give such detail and practice on solid theory one of the best tutorials I have seen. Thanks so much. 🙂
You just showed me exactly what I have been doing wrong. Thank you for this. I will subscribe most definitely. Your tutorial was dope.
Great video! I like how he fully explains everything in full depth.
I’ve just started my tattooing journey I’m absolutely in love with it ! Thank yous so much I’m still learning and going to continue watching your videos !!!! hopefully I can blossom from this 😎
Man this video is amazing. I have always had these issues, but I didn't know how to word the questions the correct way to fix the issues. This is amazing, thank you so much!!
This is why I paid for the full course they are very detail oriented and leave no guess work
Just found your channel. Top notch. Thank you for how you share this information. You present your teaching clearly and very smoothly! Like your line work :)

Thanks for for all the video love ya'll guys for the video.
Excellent tutorial! Great detail, thank you.
This was truly informative and helpful!!! Thank u so much!!!
I did phlebotomy and it’s awesome to see the similarities between the two. A big game changer for a steady hand was definitely that contact. When putting a needle in someone’s arm it’s better to put some pressure on their arm than to try not to touch them (because you’re scared they will be uncomfortable by your touch). You’d have much more stability over the needle. Also one thing I learned about depth (again for phlebotomy but it applies to tattoos as well) is to imagine, in my case the vein and its shape when you check it out before poking. With tattooing, imagine the layers of skin, the type of skin your client has whether it’s more papery or elastic and imagine how far the needle will be going in. That will help you have a visual in your brain. As an artist, for sure move your arm, not your wrist. Your wrist can be wobbly but if you learn to move your arm, your lines will be so much more smoother. Hopefully that helps someone haha or even makes sense. But the pressure thing was a game changer for me. They are already uncomfortable having a needle in them, do whatever is good for you to keep a steady hand and they will be more appreciative of the ease you bring them will your steady hand vs. Not having a steady hand and constantly having to fix your mistakes.
👏👏👏
So true..I'm a phlebotomist too lol
Omg I'm glad someone said this! 100%!

Muito bom o conteúdo, parabéns pelo seu trabalho.
Nice video. This was the first one I watched that told to stretch de skin at the direction of the line
What a great video! communicated, put together and thought out really well! I really got a lot out of this, thank you
This is such a good tutorial. I can’t wait to use the tips.
As others have said, amazing tutorial! I have watched so many, and yours are the most thoroughly explained and pleasurable to watch. Keep it up! One question in regards to keeping the hand planted, how/what do you recommend on much smaller and curved areas such as a forearm or shin? I find it difficult to get comfortable hand placement for a longer line. Thank you!
ive been doing a lot of stuff wrong, and im not sure why and i've just thought its my machine/needles but its my technique and vaseline use!! thankyou so much for this video, its really really insightful
Great tutorial, a lot of useful information. I got a question - is it possible to apply that "3 points of contact" rule when I have to make a straight line and strecht the skin at the same time?
Yes
I've spent a lot of time looking for good tattoo tutorials.so I wanted to leave you a short thank you because this tutorial is the first one that really explains how and why you should do something.
Glad it helped!
So I’m apprenticing right now and they didn’t even tell me most of what you said in this video. And I’ve been there two months. Sometimes I question if what they’re telling me to do is legitimately proper technique or if they’re just forcing me to do things the way they think is “right”
They can only teach you what they know.
If the quality of their work is good you’ll be fine.
If it’s not great then it’s worth learning from other sources.
Also it’s only been 2 months. My apprenticeship was before online leaning was around and went for 4 years. The first year all I did was draw, get the artists lunch and clean.
The apprenticeship route works but it does take a while as there’s a lot of time spent “earning your stripes” before they start teaching you.
Hope that helps.
- Nathan
@@Tattooing101 thank you!
Some people are naturally great teachers like this guy Nathan he’s really good at translating to his audience or students what the majority of artists are doing on a daily basis while tattooing or prepping but are not aware of the importance of each technical step in their process because it’s become second nature to them most likely came natural to them. A lot of what you possibly will be shown are things artists my of had a hard time getting the hang of so thats what they think might help you out. Hope that all made sense lol
Good job answering all potential questions and addressing key points.
I'm very confused you say push and pull the needle out of 45 degree angle, then I watch you tattoo the hand and you're holding it out of 45 to the side. Exactly the way you said not to which one is it please explain
With thicker needle groupings like 14rl and up the angle is a bit more than 45. More 75-80. This allows all the barbs in the needle to actually touch the skin.
When you are tattooing circles or curved lines there is a bit of leeway to compensate for that you want to reduce your depth just a fraction.
Always aim to have the machine pointed in the direction that you are moving or at least close.
Do as he says not as he does…. he’s given tutorials for beginners. I’m sure after two years you figured it out.
I literally don't comment on RUclips videos, but this was great. I'm an apprentice in Mesa AZ. I'm about 15 tattoos in on real people and I feel like I've learned more from this video then anyone in my shop😂😂
