Friends shunned me, church I attended, the same way. I quit going, haven't been since. It was 40+ years before I ever had anyone say " thank you for your service ". I still always wear my Retired Army cap with the medals I received, everywhere. I just mostly keep to myself. I've learned to live with it. Appreciate all your nice comments on the song. As you sang George. Some singers are meant to tear your heart out. This song does it for me. You were one of the chosen few. No one in today's "country" is gonna fill your shoes. R.I.P. Possum.
I WANT TO TAKE A MOMENT TO ASK FORGIVENESS FROM THE PEOPLE OF VIETNAM FOR THE SLAUGHTER OF OVER 3,000,000 OF THEIR PEOPLE BY THE AMERICAN NAZI TROOPS, SENT BY LYING LYNDON JOHNSON. AND FOR THE MILLIONS OF CHILDREN STILL SUFFERING FROM THE AFFECTS OF AGENT ORANGE.
VIETNAM SLAUGHTER: *nearly four million Vietnamese killed. *more bombs dropped on Vietnam than by all sides in all previous wars throughout history, and three times more dropped than by all sides in the Second World War. *19,000,000 gallons of herbicide poisoned the land. *9,000 of 15,000 hamlets destroyed in the South of Vietnam. *In the North, all six industrial cities devastated; 28 of 30 provincial towns and 96 of 116 district towns leveled by bombing. *The United States threatened to use nuclear weapons thirteen times. Nixon chided Kissinger for being too squeamish about this. Nixon said he, himself, just didn’t give a damn. *After the war, unexploded bombs and mines permeated the landscape and took an additional 42,000 lives. Millions of acres of land have still not been cleared of live ordnance. *Agent Orange and other defoliants have caused severe health problems for millions of Vietnamese. *Nearly all of Vietnam’s triple canopy forests were destroyed. *3,000,000 tons of ordnance struck 100,000 sites during the “secret” war in Cambodia, causing widespread social dislocation, destruction of crops, and starvation. The U.S. bombing campaign in Cambodia was directly responsible for the rise of the Khmer Rouge under Pol Pot and the genocide that took place afterward (The United States actually sided with Pol Pot when Vietnamese troops finally ended his reign of terror). YOU CALL YOURSELVES CIVILIZED!
Not just the Vietnam veterans. They haven't exactly improved how they take care of returning soldiers. There are plenty of brave soldiers of the desert wars that are treated just as poorly on their return. It's sickening. With as big as the annual military budget is, you'd think they could take care of the soldiers that return broken from their experiences. Both physically and emotionally. We shouldn't need The Wounded Warriors Project or the like. Our government should cover any, and all costs in treating those who put their lives on the line. It's a damn shame that they don't.
My daughter and I were lucky enough to see George live in Ireland in 2009. I don't think I've ever experienced such charisma on stage. If George had thrown a tantrum, I think the audience would have stood and cheered. A real legend.
I lost so many brothers in Nam when I was there searching for MIA's from 1973 to 75 and so many more since. If not for the nurses many more would be gone.
God bless every man and woman that has sacrificed for the rest of us, that we may live in this free country. What you have done for us, we can never repay.
Been country all my life, George Jones has been and still is my favorite. Had the privilege of seeing him many time and also meeting him in Nashville, Tennessee . He invited me over to his table, to meet his wife, then sat me down with them ! Talked for almost an hour ! A blessing from him to me. Shall never forget.

It’s strange. There has never been a George Jones song that actually made me cry. Which is strange because he is the voice of sadness and heartbreak. But I’ve cried from other country singers and their songs. I would have loved to hear George sing Craig Morgan’s Almost Home.
George had that one of a kind voice that just grabbed you and wouldn't let go. I've gotten away from much of today's country except for Dwight Yoakum and a few others but this Yankee will miss the voice of Mr. George Jones.
I know most people are focused on the message of the song, but I wanted to put my two cents in for George. I grew up listening to George Jones from the time my memory begins. For years, as far as I was concerned, no one else existed in country music. Not until Alan Jackson came along did anyone come close to rivaling George as a great one in country music in my opinion. I really miss this man. He truly is the greatest singer to ever grace country music!

How 300 people couldn't like this song is crazy!! This song has so much meaning and the Greatest Voice in Country Music History singing it and my all time favorite!
A poignant song about war with its consequences - touches my heart deeply - more so when it was rendered by one of the greatest Country singer that ever lived.
I live far away from US , in Croatia , Europe , but I think that country music told me more abpout US and their ordinary people than any other source of information.
That doesn't tell you anything about our country. There are far too many of us who served there and now we're doing just fine. The only thing wrong with this country is the lazy politicians.
this song makes me cry. George singing about" wild Irish rose" been from Ireland so many of our heroes lost their lives because of war and conflict and paided the price with the pain of war. rip to them all. rip George Jones. Margaret-ireland

George Jones thank you for this masterpiece! It shows the need to solve Veteran reintegration problems. Awareness is half the battle. Resources, time, and government support are necessary to end this epidemic. It is in our national security interest for recruitment efforts to take better care of our military.
I remember first listening to this song during one of my early morning walks during my sophomore year of college. I would just walk around, watching the deer, and listen to music since it was peaceful. I could walk around and not see groups of people and feeling even lonelier. At 4:30 am, on a cold January morning, this song hit hard. I know it's about veterans, but the thing that stood out to me was the theme of not belonging, and loneliness. At the time, I didn't have friends, did everything alone, which was partly my fault considering that I should have put more effort into making friends instead of focusing too much on school and not making room for being social. I was lame tbh. I just didn't feel connected with anyone on campus and I just kept "waiting" to find my people. It as the time I at least realized I was lonely and decided to make changes by joining sports and actively trying to make friends instead of just waiting. Almost a year later and things are much better, but there's still lots of room for improvement.

George Jones is the best, served in Iraq 3 tours and I know that there are homeless Iraq veterans that live on the street that have made bad decisions after they came back home.

I came here after watching Megadeth in a George Jones tribute show. This song is simply amazing; what country music is all about to me.
Still my favorite George Jones song, you understand it a little better when you come back to US after a trip across the pond.

You know the real sad part? They always find the money to send those off to war, but never have the money to take care of those who come back.
if they come back.
true
That true and its sad god bless our troops
Pac3steel so true these people’s put their physical lives and their souls on the line for us.. thank you all I pray we are worthy

I live far away from US , in Croatia , Europe , but I think that country music told me more abpout US and their ordinary people than any other source of information.
Čista petica
how so my Croatian friend?
That doesn't tell you anything about our country. There are far too many of us who served there and now we're doing just fine. The only thing wrong with this country is the lazy politicians.
Drago mi je da u Hrvatskoj ima još ljubitelja ove prekrasne glazbe. Pozdrav iz Zagreba.

George Jones: Never To Be Forgotten. R.I.P. George.
We send our young to fight futile wars and when they return home with damaged minds and minus limbs we abandon them these proud young men who serve to protect us and do a job we can't or won't do we should honour them not abandon them
god bless our service men
British, American, And all our Allies
Hope you're doing better but the username doesn't give hope.
@dylanb4494 actually I'm doing much better now. Back when I wrote this, it was at one of the lowest points of my life.
