Probably the best excavation advice I’ve ever received for building a house. A lot of ppl just show what there doin instead of explaining the thought process
Your truck and trailer set up and philosophy of having all your equipment with you is exactly like mine. I roll with a single axle Pete with a 46’ Viking trailer with mulches heads on my skid steer and my excavator with the extra buckets and grapple up on the top deck of the trailer.
We want to build at home in Florida. We'll be bringing about 18 inches of sand in for a building pad and we're also building up on about an 18 inch stem wall, so the house will be well elevated for flood protection. My question is whether I'll be able to sufficiently compress the building pad with a 7 HP plate vibrator (says it packs to 4200 psi). It will get rained on as well and I plan to make a few passes, then add another few inches, etc. I have more time than money for this project, so it's ok if it takes a while to prep the building pad :). Excellent video!
Great idea about using the transit system that way. So I'm guessing you set the setting at the halfway point..? At the one foot marker and clamp it there.
Hi, now that you leveled the field, is it going to be topped with fill dirt, or that is later and next is digging for the stem wall and the footing. Thank you
Great video.... thanks for the info. I’m going to rent some equipment to build a pad for my 50’x100’ pole barn. I live in Northern Indiana and I’m working with mostly clay. I already own a skid steer. What I’m guessing I need to is a medium sized dozer? What do you think? The is pretty level but I think I want to build up about 12” so there’s no water in the barn. Would you rent an excavator or a dozer?
@@shamrockdirtwork7945 got ya... Yeah I thought it would be too hard to do all the work with a skid steer.... especially because I want to build it up? Or would you try it?
@@kylendmiller the reason I use my excavator to build pads is because It has the dozer blade. Attaching the transit receiver makes the final grading faster. I think getting a small dozer would make it faster and easier.
I have to build a pad for a pole barn on a decent slope, about 60’ long with 5’ of pitch. I have a large property i can scrape clay off of to compact, im also wondering if i can bring in sand and compact that in 12” lifts. Either way im going to spend some money making a flat area. Any advice would be appreciated.
I don't recommend using only sand for the foundation pad. Call your local government agency and ask for advice. They should be able to answer some of your questions. There are tons of videos on RUclips that discuss the different compaction qualities of different soils. Good luck!
Seems like a lot of wasted movement I usually do 4-6 ft elevations difference Seems like you just scraped grass and pushed a little soil and called it good Concrete contractor could’ve done that in 1/2 day before forming Flat soil country! Lucky

@@shamrockdirtwork7945 Your welcome and thanks for the information.
Been watching ALOT of excavation videos down right teaching video! hope to see more of this style.

Thank you so much for posting this, can’t beat this advice & knowledge, great job! Looking forward to more of your videos!
Glad I could help. Thanks for watching!
What size metal tube did you use for the laser
It's one inch conduit. I think I bought it at Lowes.

That sounds about right. This simple setup has been very helpful when I rough cut pads.
Hello. What model of TopCon Laser do you use? Thanks.

What’s the normal per hour rate for work like this?
It can vary. Depends on what I'm doing. My area starts at $125 per hour. I usually bid jobs by the day, but by the hour.

Building it up is a good idea with any pad. Sounds like a dozer would be a good option. Can you do all the dirt work with your skidsteer?

Is compacting with a skid steer will get it to 2000psf?
My tire machine does a good job during compaction. On larger pads that require several feet of lift, I use a vibrating compactor.
No they won’t achieve the necessary compaction. This is the cheap way to do it

That was fun to watch, but would bulldozer be better suited for this
Probably. Thanks for watching!
An excavator and a skidster is all you need to do all dirt work Unless it's bigger than a football field.
I agree! Thanks for watching.
