Great tips! Thanks. You mentioned subtle edits is important which I agree with. Only my opinion but by the end of your edit with the girl, it didn't look subtle anymore. It actually looked like the girl was photoshopped into the background.

The first subject selection tutorial is unfortunately ripe for misuse and abuse: mainly because it's quite difficult to get natural looking separation messing with such abrupt subject separation. You can test this out on subjects that have even very blurred backgrounds, it very quickly looks unnatural and out of place. Basically.. be careful.
Glad to see that these are techniques that I've been using for years with the current masking tools. Instead of selections just using a exposure or clarity/sharpness brush WITHIN the subject area and just be very loose near the edges - so you don't run into issues like you see with the subject selection in the first tutorial.
The new selection tools are awesome but I think they definitely help the newbie editors with landscapes more than with people which is much more tricky. Cheers

Interesting but assumes a level of knowledge that beginner users don't have. Is there a good introduction to the whole issue of masks and what the Lightroom is intended to do as opposed to Photoshop? I find the whole Adobe suite of products totally confusing. Why is Lightroom used at all when Photoshop exists? (Enjoy the videos but the ones linked to software packages are less helpful particularly when we have to subscribe to expensive and confusing bloatware just to edit photos. A simple guide on why to use particular software editing packages and what the main benefits are would be good please. 😀
