  • SORRY FOR THE LOW VOLUME, WAS TESTING A NEW MIC. WILL SENT MIC BACK! Back in the 80's, View-Master released 33 1/3 rpm floppy records with their picture reels. Here is a demonstration of the "soundsheet" records that were enclosed in a cartridge with the reels. The discs were made by EVA-TONE.

Awesome idea. Thanks for showing. I remember bits from the Brady Bunch - Grand Canyon reels - would like to hear those again.

That's pretty neat. I remember the viewmaster, but I never knew about the ones that had tiny records combined with them.

I got some hip pocket records in my cereal when I was little; they were stories, and they were one-sided. When I found the commercially available versions of them on eBay, and those versions were on two sides records. I guess the one sided versions were made for the cereal!

I'm reminded of a filmstrip of The Doobie Brothers performing "Taking It To The Streets". Because the frame-advance tone was timed so oddly, and hard to define from the soundtrack, for years I believed that little "toot" was actually part of the song!😆

When played back on a proper record player, the audio quality is really very good! It's a shame the cheap playback mechanism inside the toy doesn't really do it justice, with wobbly tinny sound...
I'm not sure how then tones work. I'm assuming the high pitched tone is to tell you to move the visual reel on one stop, and the low-pitched tone triggers the player in the toy to pause - but there must be earlier versions of the toy that don't detect the tone (hence the announcement at the end).

My talking View Master was older and the records were hard plastic. They tended to tap against the inside of the viewer while they were spinning, and this tended to distort the audio somewhat, occasionally making it difficult to understand the narration. I had a couple of TV reels, as well as a lot of science/nature and tourist attractions like Disneyland. Interesting that the one in the video sounds like it has actual Muppet voices (Jim Henson, Frank Oz) on it. I had a couple of Disney ones where they used cheap imitators of the original character voices.

My Viewmaster 3D with audio must have been newer. The audio portion was made of hard plastic on mine, and it was tough to take apart, and IIRC the center hole kept a piece of plastic in it when I finally did get them separated.

nice record player.. I have the cassette only version of that. I also found an interesting record at the thrift store, a mattel mix and match fun / solar system quiz .. its a small 4" white record with an interesting cut pattern.. it has 40 tracks per side, and every track starts at the begining, and every track ends at the end of the record.. there are 40 notches going around the start of the record, if all that makes sense.. the record is made for some mattel toy player, or something... but I cant find anything on these anywhere.. not that Ive spent alot of time looking though.. it was made in 1981...

I also love buying the same kind of stuff you do at the thrft store.. but heres a link to the photos.. s135.photobucket.com/user/theprophetkato/library/?sort=3&page=1

I have a concern if the talking reels can be separated from the audio disc and at the same time they can be displayed in the Viewmaster viewers without problem?

I had a 1970s Talking View-Master. Mine had clear records attached to the picture reels by the center hole. They were clear so the light could shine thru to the pictures on the reel.
This was one of the reels I had: ruclips.net/video/KbpW4uPxIlk/видео.html

@@databits I always wished they'd make a view master that has either pictures of, or maybe even actual little models of, people in seats inside, to make it look like a little movie theater inside. I wanted to see it with that, and also the door in the back, with the little glowing emergency exit sign. I always thought the thing was meant to basically be a diorama of a movie theater and I always wished they could make one that looks the same inside, so you get that 3D theater experience and it actually plays full movies. I see no reason why they couldn't make that now. To bad they don't use the Viewmaster brand to transition into a brand of virtual reality headsets.
