I wish a lot of these people would realize that ultra fast and complicated wailing doesn't equal good song writing. So much more to guitar playing than wanking. Sure, there is a lot of talent and a place for it, but there is so much more to writing a great song.
I completely agree with your statement. With us kindred spirits having an affinity for music I can concur that Tobias has a gift of picking out what sounds right, testing out that sound, than merging it with other recordings till it harmonizes not just for the instrumental aspect but also taking the vocals and lyrics into consideration for a successful merge that could be accommodating for each individual involved with each song. I mean I dont get why people gotta be so elitist towards Ghost (If its the theatrics, get over yourselves), its new, authentic, and euphoric in itself and is what drew me to them in the first place.
The guy is a master at his craft. While a lot of people keep arguing if he makes real metal or pop or whatever, his songs are amazing. See how Tobias likes a lot to talk about economic riffs: keeping it simple yet powerful. Drawing comparisons will always be controversial, but his uncanny ability to craft melodies reminds me a lot of Kurt Cobain -even though their songs are very different.
@Not Mick Blotters That would be dumb and boring as fuck and it wouldn't fit Ghost's style at all. Plus, there's nothing "cringe" about it. Rock/Metal needs and will always need bands like Ghost that are theatrical and over the top. Bands like Alice Cooper, Kiss, Motley Crue, Marilyn Manson, Slipknot etc. It isn't just a "gimmick". It's an "image" yes but every band has an image (at least the ones that are worth their salt do). Even guys standing on stage in jeans/leather casual type clothes like Motorhead or Metallica. The inherent badass feel that their music gives the listener demands to have a no nonsense, jeans/leather rocker thing going on but it's still an "image" that they're projecting. Back to my point though, bands like Ghost or Alice Cooper who write and perform the way they do have no business being dressed like ordinary people on stage. The lyrics and delivery would clash completely with the vibe they have going on. Same thing if Motorhead were to go on stage dressed as the guys from Gwar or something. It'd make no sense. Bands, GREAT bands from any era be it Motorhead, Ghost, Judas Priest or whoever, need a sound, look and style to be completely consistent in order to deliver the total package. Case in point, Rob Halford discovered his whole leather, bondage gear-ish fetish around the Hell Bent for Leather days and what came next? British Steel. That album had great tunes yes but it also had a coherent, total package of band look, album art, etc. . I rest my case.
@@TheTheode Thank you kind sir for acknowledging my ideas and for appreciating my Unle Acid profile picture. You have good taste in ideas and music, clearly! :)
He's totally right about the four chord progression (6415) for Square Hammer. It's featured in many songs across many genres. The awesome property about this progression is that, instead of starting at 6 in the 6415 progression, you can start with 1 which turns out to be a 1564 progression, which is probably the most used major chord progression ever (Let It Be by Beatles anyone?). You can also start with 4 to make a 4156 progression which also sounds great. However, I am obsessed with the 6415 progression, especially on the piano. If you are a fan of Square Hammer's chorus, check these songs out: 21 Guns and Holiday by Green Day, River Flows in You by Yiruma, Nuvole Bianche by Ludovico Einaudi, Say Something by A Great Big World, Now and Forever by Richard Marx (bridge), 18 and Life by Skidrow, 9 Crimes by Damien Rice, Alone by Heart, Awake and Alive by Skillet, Down by Breaking Benjamin, Snow by Red Hot Chili Peppers, Everglow by Coldplay, Faded by Alan Walker, Going Under by Evanescence, Stay With Me by In Flames, Break In by Halestorm, Behind These Hazel Eyes by Kelly Clarkson, Listen to Your Heart by Roxette, Over My Head by Sum 41, Peace of Mind by Boston, Still Loving You by Scorpion, and Time of Dying by Three Days Grace. Thanks for reading! Edit: Let me add Spillways to the list. Love the new album!
I couldn’t hear what key he says the song is in. I backed it up and listened several times and couldn’t make it out other than *x* minor. Ultimate Guitar shows it in Dm. I haven’t been playing that long so I was watching his hands to see what chords he was playing and only know 2 of the 4 he played. 😆
@@kylebross2222 Yeah Square Hammer is in the key of Dm. Chords for the verse are Dm-Bb-Am-C. Choruses is Dm-Bb-F-C. Solo is Am-F-E. And, yeah, there are quite a few chords, each with different positions and fingerings, so it can be difficult to decipher what players are playing. Hope that helps! 🤘

I was just listening to a bunch of Ghost songs today back to back, and it’s unbelievable how many all-time classic songs they have. By far the best metal band right now. Brilliant song writing.
And his name is Tobias Forge. Is he just a forgery and just got hired to play the mastermind behind Ghost? Don't get me wrong, the choice may not have been better.
I don't play any string instruments nor would I be inclined, but listening to someone expertly speak on a topic like this will forever be fascinating to me.

Is it weird I got chills just listening to him playing it half assed on an acoustic, the sound and style just shines through, one of those bands where one chord or one chord to another can completely hit you hard. Not many bands can make you feel the way they can with just a couple of notes or chord changes :)

I've just got into GHOST and Tobias is an incredible talent. It's also really refreshing to see (in my opinion) a really humble guy that doesn't appear to have an ego, even though he's very successful.
Ritual was my first and thought “man this band would be huge if they’d tone the satanic stuff down for Americans” they toned it down with the 3rd papa and BAM! But I still prefer the old ghost, papa 1 & 2 were my fav live shows for ghost. He had the 2 guitarists kickin ass live, they’re still amazing live but the new heads don’t bring the same emotion and soul to the show. Felt like seeing a 70s band, the tone of the guitars were spot on. Now it’s lost a lot of that. But still, Tobias is amazing. One man band.
in Portuguese, "guitar" (guitarra) refers only to "electric guitar", and "acoustic guitar" has another name, called "violão". The term acoustic guitar does not exist in Portuguese.
@Eddie V when i first listened to Year Zero, i din't pay that much attention on Papa's costume, i loved the music, the outfits and imagery were just the good bonus
@Eddie V I think that's an incredibly narrow minded view. If you consider the fact that Metallica are huge fans of Ghost, and they have written some of the best heavy metal classic songs I think they know a bit about music. If you look past Ghost's "stage act" and listen to their music, they have some amazing compositions and lyrics. Tobias has a great voice and the ability to change his sound, as well as their diversity in genre/style. I would be happy if they got up on stage in jeans and tees, personally. The costumes add nothing to my listening experience..... 🤷♀️
Great to hear Tobias and his influences. I've just picked up acoustic after years of playing electric and there are some great tips here. Tune music - 70's kiss - Strutter power pop - late 70s/early 80s cheap trick/the cars 1960's riffs probably the Kinks?
I’m glad he played “Death Knell”, because that was the first Ghost song I heard. I was actually listening to “Headless Cross” by Black Sabbath on RUclips and “Death Knell” autoplayed.

Universally loved? Uh nah bro.
Square Hammer is a fantastic riff. Well deserved award for artist of the decade
Ghost is proof that simple can be extremely good
Yet simple ='s not being very good. lol
Tobias forge sounds like a name I’d give to a d&d character, probably a dwarven detective.

This is actually amazing. The is the first time we've ever seen Tobias play his songs in front of a camera
Nope, you can see him pretending to be Alpha and playing Ghost songs in 2014
There was a multi part series of TF dressed as a Ghoul playing through the songs.

@@trig3017 thank you so much for your explanation. Makes total sense. Appreciate it! 🤘🏻
Why do i know most of the songs you mentioned without noticing the progression element
That's crazy cuz I like all these songs, maybe the Chord progressions are the common factor
My neighbors listen to Ghost, even if they don't like it.
xD
Lol
wooooooooooooooooooooooooo
😂😂 same with mine.
you are awesome 😃🤘🤘
I love how he consciously made the songs pretty simple and basic yet got so much sound and soul out of it. I love it. It’s doing more with less.
His vision, musical sensibilities, and work ethic are the best I've ever seen in any one person. I respect the hell out of him.
Yeah, his work ethic must be impcredible to be able accomplish all this awesomeness in a decade
Alternate picking on Master Of Puppets? That´s illegal! Besides the jokes though, fun to see Tobias goofing around
CALL THE FBI!
Not everyone has bionic wrists like james hetfield. Alternate picking is totally fine lol
I only play it alternate these days but it is impossible to make that song sound GREAT with alternate.
All this fuckin clown can do is goof around. He doesn't take music seriously. He thinks the jacket, metal shirt and guitar are *just* fashion trends. He's not a musician, he just likes looking like one with none of the talent to make him one.
@@jessegilbert9568 You are a fucking dumbass. Tobias has no talent? You can say whatever you want about Ghost, their music isn't for everyone for sure, but Tobias is literally one of the most talented rock songwriters currently. Get outta here.

I want an acoustic version of everything.
Everyone
i saw someone do a cover on acoustic which i loved

@@hakonreinas5013 i'm intrigued...lol
He has kind of a deep voice when talking, and such an tenor voice when singing
Would definitely not call his speaking voice deep.
He sounds pretty Tenor to me. His voice is so clean
Michael Jackson's normal speaking voice was also deep (when you listen to Superbowl or This is It announcement) and his singing voice was tenor
I love how animated and passionate he always is in interviews. Such a real and fascinating personality.
I agree. But he kept wiping and touching his nose. Coke? Lol coke makes you animated haha
"On a real guitar" he says. I love Tobias
Been really digging Ghost lately, very intriguing to say least! The interview with Tobias blew my mind, so down to earth, extra kudos to the rest of the group. Looking forward to hearing more. Thanks!
As a musician, it's very satisfying hearing him explaining riffs in a more "songwriting" point of view. If you wonder why their music got bigger than others, here is kinda the proof!

OK, now I'm eagger for an acoustic Ghost album.
😉 been saying that since hearing his acoustic version of If You Have Ghosts a year ago...it would be brilliant if ghost could have their jar of flies and sap like/unplugged moment.
They've played quite a few songs acoustic, Rats, Cirice, Dance Macabre, Ghuleh/Zombie Queen etc. All of them sounded amazing and I would buy the fuck out of an acoustic album.
Yeah I need an acoustic version of Square Hammer right now, while watching the vid I was just willing him to stop talking and keep playing!
Yes, that would be incredible.
thats what ive been kind of hanging out for too. we know they (ghost) can do it so i dont understand why a company like MTV unplugged hasnt asked them.
It's cool seeing Tobias play guitar! Also cool that he credits awesome rock bands like Cheap Trick and The Cars as his influences. Those bands were amazing!

He looks like someone who got hired to play a rocker in a commercial.
And his name is Tobias Forge. Is he just a forgery and just got hired to play the mastermind behind Ghost? Don't get me wrong, the choice may not have been better.

So much respect. A very intelligent artist that knows to separate his tru persona from the alter ego.
This type of content is always really cool, you feel closer to the artist after watching these kind of videos, loved it
I loved ghost for how simple the music is but also complex like so much thought went into it. I love how Tobias breaks it down. Its awesome to see him grow musically
Is it weird I got chills just listening to him playing it half assed on an acoustic, the sound and style just shines through, one of those bands where one chord or one chord to another can completely hit you hard. Not many bands can make you feel the way they can with just a couple of notes or chord changes :)
He's one of the most underrated guitarists because he does Ghost's guitar work and never plays live but every riff is so good, even the solos
I read this as “Ghost’s Tobias forgets his favorite riffs”
Moe Clomo that’s kinda accurate
LOL like Frankie Muniz forgot all the years when he was a kid. Poor guy...
Not his I dare to think.
I genuinely enjoy how this goes from general guitar riff favs to a breakdown of square hammer
I absolutely love his shirt, his nosferatu pin, his pazuzu patch, and finally HIM! Tobias is a sweetheart and an absolute cutie. That’s all I have to say.

Square Hammer - song that got me into Ghost!
mine was Secular Haze
Sammmeeeeeee
Ritual
Ritual was my first and thought “man this band would be huge if they’d tone the satanic stuff down for Americans” they toned it down with the 3rd papa and BAM! But I still prefer the old ghost, papa 1 & 2 were my fav live shows for ghost. He had the 2 guitarists kickin ass live, they’re still amazing live but the new heads don’t bring the same emotion and soul to the show. Felt like seeing a 70s band, the tone of the guitars were spot on. Now it’s lost a lot of that. But still, Tobias is amazing. One man band.
Mine was Cirice
OMG!! He is just amazing, damn I love him so much. Why is this video so short?? I can't get enough of him!!! 🖤🤘❤️
I could sit an listen to him play acoustic all day. I think seeing them do an unplugged show or two would be pretty cool
"On a real guitar"
*Implying acoustic guitars are imaginary*
in Portuguese, "guitar" (guitarra) refers only to "electric guitar", and "acoustic guitar" has another name, called "violão". The term acoustic guitar does not exist in Portuguese.
Tenacious D??
@@FMSworld ok, but...Tobias is not from Portugal or Brazil, he is from Sweden...

Such a musical genius no wonder hetfield dig ‘em, he made something even metalheads and pop mainstream heads will get along and call good music.
@Eddie V Hasn't slipknot done that for years, and their music was always garbage?
@Eddie V Yeah, the music has nothing to do with it......
@Eddie V You're full of shit tho. The theatrical stuff was adopted by the band right after they recorded their first three songs. Look it up
@Eddie V when i first listened to Year Zero, i din't pay that much attention on Papa's costume, i loved the music, the outfits and imagery were just the good bonus
It is very cool to see him off stage. He seems like a neat guy, awesome musician. ❤
Tobias, you’re a humble genius, my man. The intricate, beautiful music...your dulcet voice...the mesmerizing stage show...Ghost simply has no peer. 👻😈
Loving how Forge casually refers to the Axis of Awesome's "Four Chord Song". Great bit.
I appreciate how this video isn’t edited into oblivion. It feels like they just turned on the camera and let him go, bum notes and all. Great video.
I’d like to see him play more of his own songs!
Great to hear Tobias and his influences. I've just picked up acoustic after years of playing electric and there are some great tips here.
Tune music - 70's kiss - Strutter
power pop - late 70s/early 80s cheap trick/the cars
1960's riffs probably the Kinks?
The only reason Tobias is so chill is because he unleashes his energy on stage. This is him recharging between performances.
Seeing him play stand by him and other songs on acoustic just gives me so many hopes and expectations for an acoustic album.
We need an acoustic version of Square Hammer
I’m glad he played “Death Knell”, because that was the first Ghost song I heard. I was actually listening to “Headless Cross” by Black Sabbath on RUclips and “Death Knell” autoplayed.
