David hit the nail on the head, this adjustment would make the media mod all the better. Another small detail, if you put a screen protector on the rear screen, and then slide the camera into media mod, the media mod causes the screen protector to bubble at corners/edges. Tight fit is superb, just wondering if a small bit of room could be accounted for for use with screen protector if desired. Again just a thought.
Gopro sadly passes the feet through the media mod in hope that it will help with overheating, the small vents under the feet are Gopro's only thought on how to cool this tiny camera down. Gopro should offer a larger version of there camera with all the media functions built in.
Thanks David..... The issue you're addressing is spot on and is equal to my #1 complaint. In addition, the following problems are I.M.O. a P.I.A. as well; 1) Doesn't even come close to eliminating wind noise. If used inside you might just as well use the GoPro's mic. 2) Thumb screw is too short. a) The end of the knob actually causes the GoPro to tilt up a little bit. b) Can't tighten it down enough. c) Can't use a knob wrench. As always, thank you for all your content. 👍
Hi David, another thing that i think lacks in gopro lineup, its a good set of wireless mic....i'm talking about something like DJI MIC (did you try it?! i'm thinking to buy them) with the receiver mounted on the media mod in one of the two space (or on additional mount of the volta) what do you think? whic mic you use with the gopro?
David great video and I agree with the issue, however don't the flip down feet serve the purpose of venting for the camera so it doesn't overheat as easy? Maybe that's the reason they didn't make it that way.
Howdy David. I never ran into that problem because I don't need an HDMI port. I never purchased the media mod. Instead I use the GoPro audio adapter, which is inserted into a slot on a Ulanzi G9-5 cage. The cage has built in feet brackets to attach to a tripod or other support. Then I plug in whichever mic I decide to use, which is usually a small Edutige omnidirectional mic or a Rode shotgun mic. I can open the side door of the cage to get to the battery and SD card without removing my GoPro 10 from the cage. I can also use any 52mm round filter lens or UV filter screwed into the threads on the cage. I mount this rig onto an older style DSLR camera handle with a small tripod attached to the bottom. Another added benefit is that the camera never overheats, because the metal frame absorbs and dissipates the excess heat. I usually shoot in 2.7k. It works for me.
I am new to GoPro stuff, so I just purchased and waiting for the Media mod and the Volta, after watching this and other video, I purchased a replacement base mount for the camera and plan on (when my stuff arrives) to take the new replacement base mount that goes on the camera and fill it in on the base of the media mod, then it will free up the camera to slide in and out as needed and the fingers will retract like the camera does. Seems simple enough and protects the fingers when not needed… will see when all the stuff arrives.
A question....the mediamod has the 3.5mm jack for external mic, along with a USB-C socket on the back. Is it possible to use that USB-C socket for a power bank at the same time as using an external mic? Would it conflict as both items are essentially coming from the same USB-C socket in the mediamod. As I am guessing the added mic would use battery power. As we all know the batteries in the gopro are small. That eliminates the need to remove the gopro from the mediamod.
I was excited for the media mod but honestly think the standard mic sounds better than the mod one. & having to add another external mic for better sound messes up the point of a go pro for my needs. It also causes it to overheat way faster 😒. I never use it anymore with the mod. Camera quality in good lighting is top notch though 👌
@@DavidManningvlog yeah, front and rear mic active at the same time would be great or at least a way to switch between them on screen or through a switch.
Hi David, In regards to placing feet to the bottom of the media mod , if the bottom floor of the cage remains solid then referring back to your video this would further increase overheating problems would it not ? Isn’t that the reason that the hole was created to allow the flaps to come down to let heat out and to allow airflow.
For sure one of the reasons, but they could skeleton other areas of the cage to allow more airflow. This is just maddening when using this thing and having to change a battery or sd card!
@@DavidManningvlog Yes of course I totally agree more ventilation holes could be added that would definitely help out, also would it not be at least more helpful if the media mod had a duplicate release catch on the opposite side of the cage allowing access to the battery and SD card ?
100% agreed. I’ve been saying since the Hero 8 that this was a problem. They could make the mod a little taller with a vent so the air could still circulate for cooling. And dual channel mic would be great!
1000% agree.. when the camera is part of a rig it is a huge pain to have to dismantle the whole thing and then reset once you have fixed the battery etc also overheating in the tropics in the mod is a problem
As a longtime gopro user, what I'd like to see is 1, a hdmi on the unit like on the 7. 2, higher data rates like 150 mbps. 3 a rear screen that actually fills the back without that rediculous border, and 4, a mic input onboard without getting ripped off for the media mod.
This is right on point. Recently I was trying to shoot out in the open ocean being thrown around trying to change out the battery. What a pain. Seems like an easy fix to put the feet on the outside.
This exact same problem bugs me as well. However, the reason (apparently) you have to pop the goPro's OWN clips out, is because those are assistant heat dissipators when it is inside the media mod. I don't now if this is true, but there's alot said about it out there and I have noticed overheating is real when they are folded in.
Wondering if you could assist? We’ve been using our GoPro 10 with a media mod and mostly the sound has been an improvement since adding the media mod, however all of a sudden the sound sounds muffled. We haven’t adjusted any settings at all. Any ideas?
Glad this video came out, unfortunately over a year and GoPro isn’t doing anything about it and never will. This is an example of some engineer so proud of his or her invention (flip down feet) that they designed the entire product line around it whether it make sense or not. I use the media mod for mounting in vehicle with a headrest mounting pole and it’s a complete PITA to get the aim correct and takes a few tries. Then after mounting you have to undue the whole stupid thing to change the battery, it’s like GoPro didn’t even test the media mod for a day or someone would’ve said this is stupid it’s such a glaring oversight. Luckily it looks like the 12 has a 1/4-20 hole so maybe I can get creative and use a stepped 1/4-20 type of thumb screw so once my angle is set all I’d need to do is unscrew the GoPro with mod and replace the battery but it’s still a dumb answer to such a simple issue.
Hey David, we have a few GoPro Media Mods and tearing down the mount every time to swap the battery and card was driving me nuts… so I designed and CNC machined a finger mount and a 1/4-20 mount that attaches to the Media Mod case. I will send you a few for testing if you’re interested.
Great idea! Hope they listen. And…if GP is listening: where is a Volta media creator case? By the time you put the Volta, the camera and media mod all together, there is no practical way to stow it after use with breaking it down
Yes come on GoPro, the next media mod should have its own feet, super annoying to have to take the media mod apart to get to the battery and SD card! The dual mic could be fixed in an update?
Hi yes this is a big problem to change the battery. But I think the place where mounts installed added mics and processor which is heating a lot. So if this place will be closed it could make overheated problems.
Media Mod is cool on a Motorcycle, as you get actual engine sounds and not just wind noise, and with the mic on rear, it even picks up what I say without needing to add a helmet mike. But the battery exchange is a real pain. Only good thing is that I can charge the camera through the Media Mod from the bikes boardnet.
So true! Wow, GoPro screwed up with the media mod! 🧐 I believe media mod prior to the 9 did allow to record front AND back, I know there were some previous versions that did. 🤷🙄
the point is that go pro has its own orifices on the bottom for cooling and they are covered by folded fits. They should be got down (mounting position) for set a proper ventilation for go pro. So you couldn't do this if media mod have it's own fits (go pro fits will be folded inside media mod and cover the cooling orifices). So it will lead to overheating go pro.
I got the GoPro Volta to get around this design problem. Volta gives me about 4 hours of video recording. And I can charge the Volta and the GoPro at the same time, w/o removing the GoPro from the Media Mod. Also going to add the DJI wireless mic to the Media Mod. But the Media Mod should be designed similar to the One Rs 360, as you suggest David
I'm a brand new GoPro user. I took mine to Saint Croix and got wonderful footage. However just changing from one mount to another can be just a pain. I can see how the media mod (which I don't have yet) helps cooling with the hole for the flip down feet. In the climate I just was it works certainly need that. However, having an easier way to change batteries and SD card would be amazing. How about creating a way to leave the GoPro on the mount and developing a way to remove the media mod so you can access the door? So instead you're just removing the housing instead? Obviously closing the side panel would lock it in place on the GoPro so why not make it quick removal? This way you keep the cooling area and solve three issue at hand?
The Volta is not a viable solution for those of us using the GoPro for POV action sports recording. I mount the GoPro (in the Media Mod) either to a chest mount or helmet mount when mountain biking. The Volta is too bulky and heavy in these type of applications. David's solution is one I've been thinking about for a long time. I've even considered buying a set of replacement feet and seeing if I could somehow mount them into the Media Mod.
This video just answered my question as to why I can't charge my Hero9 while inside the mediamod. @gopro - love your products, looking for a solution to resolve the needs of transferring memory and charging batteries while in the MediaMod.
Like your ideas. Also don't like the software where you transfer files to your hard drive's computer. Half the time it doesn't work and I have to take the mem card out to get to the files. Not having front and back mikes is lousy, and the feet are terrible. GoSlow needs to fix these.
David, good to see you again. My challenge is that my 10 will glitch once a day in one of three ways; freezes on and will not turn off - or - freezes off and won’t turn on - or - turns off when it’s less than 40%. I thought they fixed this. Now to your “solution” doesn’t GoPro dissipate heat thru ports under the feet? If you cover them in the media mod please then the heating problem returns. Hmmmm. Maybe redesign the media mod to just lift off over the top? I don’t know. Anyway good food for thought. Thanks for making us (and hopefully GoPro) think.
I guarantee it's something to do with air flow holes on the bottom by the legs, however I agree 100% I actually built an adapter to hold my media mod so I can pull my gopro anytime from mod without having to fool with the feet, and your 100% right gopro should fix this and we not have to make our own adapters. Great video I'm learning alot about gopros from your channel
@@BarryP well I know from his heat testing video it said it was inaccurate due to legs being closed flat on table and not open to allow air flow ,so they've gotta help with air flow being exposed vs closed
@@Lonebowhunter I watched that one as well, and fully see what you're saying and thinking. Those are mics that are 100% sealed off from the heat makers (the processor and the battery) and without the Mod. His point on that vid was that the cam does better without having a long side sandwiched to a table (an instance where nobody uses a GoPro). That kinda goes without saying, and the previous testing by other reviewers he was critical of has no bearing in practical use. He was right. That was the point of the vid. Regardless, those are not "airflow holes".
Dreampick has VRT, a Vertical Mounting System to switch a GoPro from landscape to portrait orientation. Why not have a similar type attachment from the side cold shoe mount on the Media Mod that has a 1/4 mount or GoPro like fingers. The new attachment could also include a replacement cold shoe. I would definitely go for something like that.
I totally agree with you. I went on a 3500 miles road-trip with my GoPro chin mounted on my helmet with media mod. Had to park my bike and do the task every time my battery died. It was a hassle for me.
Hi Dave. You could use an Artman vlogging case with the gopro mic adapter ( that fits under the gopro within the case) The cost of both is about the same as the media mod on it's own. Battery access is easy with the Artman vlogging case (just flip open the door).
GoPro are supposed to be releasing many new products this year. Hopefully Media Mod 2 will be one of them. A head strap with a longer connector to mount the camera on would be useful so you could attach the GoPro contained within the Floaty. I have worked around this problem by attaching an extension piece between the head strap adapter and the GoPro feet, but it would be good if I didn't need this.
AND, PLEASE @gopro, please sell this revised Media Mod WITH a longer thumb screw so that we can torque it down well. The current 'long' screw version ends up tucking in underneath the edge of the Media Mod. No good unless you have a screwdriver to help you. You got this!! #gopro
I ditched my GoPro Media Mod. I no longer use it. I instead purchased a SmallRig case and have to say I love it 1000x better. I know its not the same thing but I hate taking the media mod apart and opt to use use an external mic with the SmallRig case.
I know this is completely different. But do you know why when using the GoPro app you can’t see the live video on the app. Only show the preview but whet hit record it doesn’t show the live feed. Hope I’m making sense LOL…
I've heard this has something to do with a lawsuit over the patent owner of that feature, BUT every other device manufacturer is able to do it. Not sure exactly, but GoPros used to be able to do this. I think with the Hero 9, they stopped🤷♂
@@DavidManningvlog thank you for the response. I was think I was doing something wrong lol. But damn it they need to fix it 😆 I’m a undercover shopper 🤣😂😂
Agreed on the stubborn changing of the battery/SD card scenario. GoPro can you possibly add the VU meters to the app so we can confidently monitor input values?
I have been wanting this the whole time. And the 8 media mod use to record both directions at the same time, they changed it with the 9. I heard it had to do with a patent lawsuit ongoing, but cant remember where I saw that.
Even more pro tip: make it to where the cage opens up on the same side of the battery and SD card so you can simply open the side door, switch out whatever you need then close it back.
Seems like a no-brainer. Hopefully, GoPro gives the Mod the update. Great video! Totally agree with a dual mic option. That would be awesome. I bought the Movo DoubleMic specifically for the scenario you mentioned. When, I'm vlogging, I often want to turn the camera to show what I am talking about and then the audio from behind the camera is super muffled. It's a total pain. You can always use a Rode Wireless Go or Go II, but I don't always like having to deal with all the charging of multiple devices.
Hahaaa! I was mentioning that it offered some ventilation, but I'll take feet over more ventilation. I don't ever really deal with the overheating thing how I use my GoPros. Always moving around👍
David surprisingly, I use the Deity Dou 4 along with the media mod in wired and wireless set ups. So I'm with you on having some flexibility to adjust in post!
I’m having a problem where when I plug in my external microphone it’s picking up but once I start live streaming it switches back over to the media mode microphone any help would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks , Shane
I'd like u to do a video on the gh5 1 inch sensor vs up comin go pro 11 [rumoured] 1 inch sensor... I hv the hero10, will upgrade to the 12 next year.. as u said switching is expensive... the lcd increased size on go pro 11 is a usless gimic
agree %100. sometime i wonder if these companies actually use their products before releasing. it took me two minutes after getting to be like “hmmm, this is a flawed design”.
Wasn't one of the suggestions to extend the time before the hero 10 overheating was to lower the feet? The little holes in the underside are able to vent some heat allowing a longer run time before overheating shutdown? 🤔
100% couldn't agree more! Little details like this make a huge difference in quality of life/workflow. I'm always the camera guy on our trips and I hate making my group wait for me while I mess with my equipment so anything that can make it simpler/quicker is greatly welcomed.
Is there a fix to allow us to download from the media mod USB-C port. I have to take the whole thing apart to get my videos out. WTF right. It though the USB-C on the media mod would pass through? Tested on both Mac and PC.
Here's my theory of why it doesn't have its own feet...it's the overheating problem. The 9, 10, 11 all had awful overheating problems that were always exacerbated by the media mod enclosure because it retains more heat. My theory is that by not enclosing the feet and using the camera's feet instead of a plastic cover on the mod was GoPro's attempt to try to keep the camera cooler. It's the only explanation that makes sense. But yeah, the design drives me crazy too.
Yes, you're right! Also I think this will provide some protection to the camera as well because if you're doing some aggressive activities and your setup decides to bumped into something really hard, that'd would break the camera feet, no cap. Although it's not a big deal, media mod is more expensive than GoPro feet but it still hurts lol.
@@DavidManningvlog Thanks a a lot for the reply David!! I forget to mention, I love your videos and your production quality man! Keep up, i regularly watch videos, sometime eating dinner lol
Yes, this is a simple fix. Please Gopro...a little smarter design. Also, is there a way to get a dead cat mic cover for the media mod please? Or a way to replace the original even would be nice
I am going to add this to the long list of damn if you do / damn if you don't. Not to long ago - everyone - OMG when I want to change the battery its SOOO HARD to with cage - Year or two later the other action cameras have cage and no one even mentions a cage any more as negative. It has to be really hard to change a battery with cage multiple pieces that could fall off in the surf and never be seen again. But you are right about the mic tho.
YES and YES!! GoPro Media Mod is cool, but could be way cooler with it’s own feet and front & back mics on at the same time. I point the camera at me, talk and flip the camera outward to show something. But I can’t talk until I turn the camera off and switch to the rear mic!! Let’s go GoPro!! You will loose people to the Insta360 family if you don’t pay attention to details!!!!!

I've even considered buying a set of replacement feet and seeing if I could somehow mount them into the Media Mod.
@@TheActiveLife20 Ah! Okay. Thanks for the enlightenment.
This video just answered my question as to why I can't charge my Hero9 while inside the mediamod. @gopro - love your products, looking for a solution to resolve the needs of transferring memory and charging batteries while in the MediaMod.
I always wondered why the media mod didn't have it's own feet. Good video, David!
It's sort of maddening once you realize it!
Like your ideas. Also don't like the software where you transfer files to your hard drive's computer. Half the time it doesn't work and I have to take the mem card out to get to the files. Not having front and back mikes is lousy, and the feet are terrible. GoSlow needs to fix these.
100% agree with u david.hope gopro listen and solve it.
Yes that would be awesome if Gopro would make this adjustment on the cage and also on the Mic. Thanks for doing a video on this.
Those holes are mics, not airflow vents.
@@BarryP one is a mic and the other is the speaker of the gopro.
I too 100% agree. But, I thought you were going to talk about the overheating of the GoPro while in the Media Mod. I have a the Hero 8
Well, GoPro at least solved your mic request on the Hero 12 anyway. It now supports stereo recording using both mod mics.
Biggest gripe for sure! And the lack of mic control got me to get DJI's Mic, so far it's awesome for sound quality. Works great with GoPro too.
100% agree, wiykd be great improvement- would probably increase cost of medi mod though
That sounds dreamy Roy! Would love a media mod that supports vertical mounting🙌
I just love the compact form of the media mod so much over the old school dongle! Add feet, and getting to that battery will be super quick👍
So glad you did this. It’s truly the Achilles heal. Also good to know you read comments!! 🙂 You can do it GoPro!
Love comments Keith!🙌
Hey go pro I use the media mod for everything and I would so happily buy another if you added feet like David suggests.
Darn.. waiting on my Media Mod in the mail.. Thanks for the info!
I think that the camera mics sounds better, I just add the wind slayer and thats work great for me!
Absolutely agree. Big problem with the media mod.
Agreed on the stubborn changing of the battery/SD card scenario. GoPro can you possibly add the VU meters to the app so we can confidently monitor input values?
they should add the VU meters also to the display mod which displays nothing except its own battery status.
Does it still drain the battery when its connected and off?
I have been wanting this the whole time. And the 8 media mod use to record both directions at the same time, they changed it with the 9. I heard it had to do with a patent lawsuit ongoing, but cant remember where I saw that.
GoPro, both are great modifications. Will definitely buy new one if you incorporated them especially the R/L audio channels.
Love your videos
From India 🇮🇳
Even more pro tip: make it to where the cage opens up on the same side of the battery and SD card so you can simply open the side door, switch out whatever you need then close it back.
Duh. GoPro is run by idiots.
Totally with you, that would be a game changer for the MediaMod!
You already did a vid on why they SHOULDN'T add feet to the media mod: ventilation/ overheating
Thanks , Shane
any more videos on the OneRS coming?
Very soon!
I don't have this set up, but I see where this can get annoying. Good review David!
agree - not having the feet drive me crazy ! enough i’ve looked for another camera
Just so annoying to have to unmount your camera just to change the battery!
agree %100. sometime i wonder if these companies actually use their products before releasing. it took me two minutes after getting to be like “hmmm, this is a flawed design”.
Wasn't one of the suggestions to extend the time before the hero 10 overheating was to lower the feet? The little holes in the underside are able to vent some heat allowing a longer run time before overheating shutdown? 🤔
I would absolutely buy the media mod if it included the improvements covered in this video!
Let's hope GoPro is listening!
Totally agree especially getting sound from front and rear mics at the same time 👍 come on GoPro let’s get these done 👍
This would be amazing! I hate that I have to take the whole thing apart to change out the battery
100% couldn't agree more! Little details like this make a huge difference in quality of life/workflow. I'm always the camera guy on our trips and I hate making my group wait for me while I mess with my equipment so anything that can make it simpler/quicker is greatly welcomed.
I'm 100% that guy as well! Always looking to get gear setup faster/easier👍
I will go for those fixes 100%
Lengthen the thumb screw going forward. Maybe smith to wing nut type design.
Gopro should hire you bro. I agree 100%.
The media mod needs modding! Btw the Mauritius trip was awesome. Got some amazing footage of wild dolphins with the GoPro🐬
Total agree with idea. Do it GoPro!
@Text me on telegram@DavidManning that's awesome!! Thanks!!
Solid point Mritunjay!
Mine’s in the mail…good to know. 👍🏼
Geez if I came across this earlier I wouldn’t have just bought a go pro 12 with the media mod…..
