You slide faster than you run and the ice animation maintains that momentum. There are a few ways to to significantly faster that are also extended via the ice flower.

The sheer speed you gain from shooting ice balls and all of the other crazy tricks I saw, like sliding backwards, throwing shells and then running fast enough to jump off of them completely blew me away. Truly astonishing job!
Holy shit this is incredible. Going in I had very little expectations, kinda assumed a lot of it would be very one-note hold right and was immediately blown away with the slope momentum tricks, ice flower to push forward, and all the insane mid-airs (especially 5-4 lmao) This is awesome!

I know Ryukahr has used the fireball/iceball trick at 23:40 in tons of videos... I’m surprised to see it is just now being utilized in this run. Very happy to see it being used!

Props to you three for making probably the best speedrun i have ever seen, my amateur speedrunning self was blown away from this tas. When someone (cant remember who) said it would revolutionize speedruns i thought it was saying it was gonna be good. When i watched it the first time (and every other time) whoever said that was serious, THIS SPEEDRUN IS INSANE Edit: i thought the 5-4 skip with penguin was just for fun, the fact it was actually used i thought was absolutely crazy. Is there a specific name for when you use penguin for it?

The TAS was a lot of fun to make and optimize, and even I was blown away as new strats were being developed across this run as it was being created. 5-4 Penguin doesn't have a specific name other than that. Funny story, we TASed 5-4 with penguin 6 times to get it to where we thought would be final. But 3 days before the TAS was promised to be released, Squashh decided he wanted to redo 5-4 again and I reluctantly agreed to TAS it as much as I had time for. So we basically grinded TASing 5-4 for probably 8 hours and came up with 13 frames of timesave. Pretty good! Anyway, thanks for the nice comment :)
@@RoseQuartz692 Qr1pt1k made a Lua script which can export the inputs of individual level sections and save them to a file so that we can replay those inputs whenever we want. So basically we were copy and pasting the inputs of the rest of the TAS.
This is the current fastest TAS, although it has since been proven to be improvable by about a second by swapping to nunchuck (thanks to slightly different controls), a new strat in 5-1, and a framesave in a couple other levels
Holy shit, this is crazy. It's been a while since I've watched a NSMBW TAS, but from what I remember, in previous TASes and RTA speedruns the helicopter suit dominates. The use of Ice/Penguin in this run was crazy and there was such cool swag in there too. Great job! I do have a question though, and forgive me if this sounds stupid as I've not played NSMBW in a VERY long time, is it not possible to do a POW drop in this game for 5-4? I feel like it would be faster but iirc POW grabs are different in this game and I could see why it wouldn't be possible
Pow drops are not possible in this game, strangely. And the pow doesn't slow down in the poison either so we can't use it as a platform there. Thanks for the comment!

Even weirder that the POW block doesn't slow in the poison??? Holy--back when I had only watched the TAS by Master I had always assumed there just weren't many fun speed tricks to break this game. Boy, was I wrong. What's up with that wall climb at 22:10? Could that be used in 5-T to climb faster and potentially skip the propeller?
That wall clip is very fast... once we get it set up. The only method to do that as far as I know is to use an enemy to get pushed into the wall, or teleport into the wall by other means. Unfortunately, there isn't a way to do that very quickly in 5-Tower in Singleplayer. We can bring a dry bones down to the bottom of the level, but that takes ages and doesn't save time. I also tried bringing one above the first section, but was unable to do so on the regular cycle meaning that it costs much more than it saves. Until another way to set up a wall clip is discovered, propeller is still in the TAS.

also the final boss battle skip.. that probably saved a good 10-20 seconds wtfff.
