Penguin water movement is funny. After expanding my toolset, multiple rounds of earlygame revision (4 seconds saved), and countless hours of work, this segment is finally here! It was kind of annoying to TAS the vertical sections of this level but overall it was pretty fun to do. Tried halfclipping instead of going up the second vertical section normally but you need star to do it since the spikes aren't touching the wall lol Might be a frame or two of optimization somewhere

Very fun collectable-based level. I honestly enjoyed doing this so much I might do it with some of the other enemy ambushes as well (using different powerups too). Did this mostly to release an optimized prop TAS of the first pattern for @y4ck3r. Pattern 1: 94.531 igt. 2-Tower 100% with penguin! Penguin is unfortunately much slower than propeller in this level, mostly due to star coin 3 and the one sided wall jumps right at the end. I was going to let this level slip into the void of levels to wait for the 100% tas to be published, but looking at the route there's a good chance I'll be getting propeller here instead. So... why not share it now :D

Penguin loses a little more than an igt compared to propeller, so prop is still best for the IL. However... because propeller 1-Tower requires early 1-3 Normal exit, this confirms that it's faster to do 1-3 Normal and 1-Tower with penguin! Pretty fun level, glad it's finally been penguinized. Beats Soig's 100% TAS by 4 igt and the RTA il by 6 igt.

Penguin is saving 8 frames over Propeller. Pretty sweet. The sad part is it's only faster because of faster loading times, it actually lost 2f using igt as the comparison. Prop can probably be improved by a frame in the final room using rapid backward slides too. But as for now it looks like penguin is in the hundo TAS :)

The main room of Penguin 5-4 (Any% tas), by far. It took 3 weeks of work at over 2 hours a day on average (6 individual runthroughs, only the last two of which beat prop), plus an additional two 6-hour days of revision right before the TAS released. That month was when squashh and I really got to know each other very well lol (we were in vc for almost all of it)
Always wondered how you did it. Also what tools do you use?
I use what you see in that video (frame-advance, savestates, tas-input, lua scripting, and the hitbox visualizer) as well as different tools such as Reggie (level editor/viewer) and Dolphin Memory Engine (to hack mario's position or speed or powerup or whatever to test things easier)

i have been curious what does it take to make something like this because I've ran odyssey and saw the best time from clips put together but how hard is it to make a real tas
That depends on the game. Celeste has some of the best and easiest to use TAS tools out there, hence why so many people have helped TAS it. Switch games have very primitive TASing tools at the moment, due to not having any savestates; they just play back the entire input script from a sync point (like level select) in order to make changes. NSMBW is somewhere in the middle. We use Dolphin Lua core to TAS, which allows you to play the game in slow motion, frame advance, use 10 savestate slots, watch any memory value (like Mario's speed and position), and write lua scripts to help make the TASing process easier. However, Dolphin has one major drawback that affects all Wii games: you cannot use a 'TAStudio,' which is an easy way to visualize or edit all inputs going on around the point you are playing back. That system would allow you to view the whole file as an input script and modify it to TAS, instead of manually holding buttons as you frame advance or using TAS-input (a window where you can select what buttons to press and fine-tune motion input). As for the TASing process itself, it's largely just a lot of just trying as many routes and movement options as you can think of, then seeing which one ends up being fastest. And tons of trying random things that might break the game (glitches or new movement tech) to save time. It took me a long time to get enough experience to reliably make my TASes close to optimal. No individual point was extraordinarily difficult to learn, but it definitely gets easier to know what to do as you gain more experience.

4-3 comes later in the route (part 7 or 8) because it requires mini and we're doing it right before 2-2 since that saves 15 seconds or more.

How did you get 60fps on a Wii???
Most wii games run at 60fps, and you can record that if you have a good capture card. TASes are made on emulator though, which has implemented 60fps recording.

You can't hit hidden blocks while falling downwards, so I crouched underneath, bonked on the ceiling just left of the hidden blocks, then shot ice to uncrouch and give me just enough height to walljump on the left wall without activating the hidden blocks. Pretty funny clip lol
