this is amazing! I have a question how do you download a tas and also is it just completely an AI playing? or are you playing it just gives better gameplay, I have no clue how a tas works
Hi! To start, a TAS is made by running a game, in this case NSMBW, in an emulator. Emulators have tools which allow you to slow the game down, completely pause it, and even advance frame-by-frame. While doing this, the emulator also provides a nice interface for controlling controller inputs. Emulators also allow you to save your specific location and state of the game at any point and then to return to that 'savestate' at any time you wish. A TAS is when a human uses these TAS-tools to play through a game like this, usually frame-by-frame, changing the controller inputs whenever needed, and creating a movie in the end. So although an AI plays back the inputs, a human still has to tell the AI what inputs to play. With enough patience and work, a TAS can perform perfect inputs that would be impossible for a human to do in real time. Dolphin Emulator is used to TAS Wii and GameCube games, and is the emulator I am using to make this TAS. Here's a good video which explains how to use Dolphin to record TASes: ruclips.net/video/M0Cxf8NhlpY/видео.html If you are interested in TASing NSMBW specifically, then you can go to speedrun.com/nsmbw which has a linked discord server where you can get help there. Good luck!
Absolutely. The penguin suit saves a lot of time (10-20 seconds) in almost all levels, with the exception of most vertical stages, when propeller is fastest. So naturally, the best combination for 2 players is penguin and propeller. The most efficient way to do that is with 5-Toadhouse to get penguin, and them get propeller for only one player in 8-Airship (which won't lose time for bad powerup routing). However, because this is the 100% category, I need to use the mini mushroom from time to time. By equipping mini with Luigi, then swapping to use Toad, Luigi stays mini even though I'm not using him. Then, I can just swap back to Luigi when I need another mini mushroom instead of visiting the room in 2-2, going to additional toad houses, or doing any illogical level routing later.
Swapping players is so smart, this tas is gonna be nuts
Why?
