@@LeaPar4 by 1-2 they're referring to the underground level in the original SMB, where you could go above the level and find a warp pipe to skip worlds. Just about every super mario game has referenced this with a secret exit at the end or otherwise.

The whole bit with the rotating pipe being capped off with "That is... until Penguin Mario came to town." Is just very comical to me for some reason.
We've broken another minute barrier, gamers! Going above the ceiling seems familiar, yet completely new! I was also not expecting the Penguin Suit to be used this well in the route!

I was actually perplexed when I found out that NSMBW TASes used the propeller mushroom instead of the penguin suit, given the latter's speed potential.
@@leonrohow? The propeller helped with bombful,double bombless,and most of the jungle which saves 40-50 as the jungle bridge skip is huge but now we know a infinitely wall jump double bombless 20secs saves can be used with a penguin
@@Clearical_ penguin goes fast, propeller isn't particularly useful outside of a few levels and the item house at the beginning is accessible enough to give you penguin even if the route has to be repeated

Fascinating TAS! I am not very familar with NSMB Wii speedrunning, so seeing some of these advanced penguin suit movements, and advanced infinite walljumping is interesting nontheless.

I always knew one day sub 22 speedruns could happen, and it finally happened. but what I didn't expect is the insane ways people find JUST to save time
this is crazy! never thought there was this much yet to be discovered in the game
Speedrunning really creates such an increased lifespan for any game, creating new discoveries even 14 years after every last intended secret nook and cranny has been discovered.

There is no benefit to left + right in nsmbw, so it is not used.

I just watched the summoning salt video two days ago this is very good timing
At first, I clicked on this video fearing the clickbait and the run not actually being changed a lot
Turns out it wasn't clickbait, the TAS is incredibly different now, nice
mario bros wii was my first game ever, is you showed 8 year old me this TAS speedrun, my mind would've exploded
it would be nice for a game to have a masive time saving glitch found not by professionals, but instead found by random people.
just imagine how amusing it would be if speed runners were trying to make a sub hour speedrun of a game like that halo game with jorge and a random guy playing with friends went: " hey guys look, I'm a magician. i can disappear! * Shoots rocket at feet whilst at like half health, loses most of the health to the blast, gets launched up from the blast, hits a cutscene load zone near the roof that sets the point in the game to be near the end where the objective is to survive, and when the cutscene ends, he dies of fall damage, immediately beating the game* "

I don't know if I missed it in the video, but I don't think I got quite _how_ nobody thought to try this until now, or why it might be difficult. He said there was a barrier further along the castle, but what was preventing anyone from doing it at the start all this time? Pretty wild for a literally 40 year old trick haha. Oldies but goodies.

As someone who adored this game as a kid and even today, I’m still shocked people still speedrun this masterpiece and find some new and cool things to make the runs more interesting and more impressive.
I saw the new tas a while ago, and when I saw the above the castle, I was just like "oh wow I haven't seen that before, neat!", didn't realize that was the first time it was ever revealed! wow
I always thought it’s strange when TASs are similar to regular play. I feel like TASs will end up looking crazy and different.
Well remember, humans made the route that the TAS executes, so they are just making it do what they already can do, just better.. trying to think of theoretical runs that involve things that humans aren't even close to doing is hard to conceptualize for runners since they don't have a basis to start from, it's like if the BLJ was TAS exclusive, how long would it take for it to be discovered if humans didn't even know it was possible for a non-human to execute something they themselves cannot do?
Super Mario Bros. is about the same to be honest.
Majority of the techniques done are TAS techniques, and (seemingly) impossible TAS techniques are now standardized in runs.
It depends on the game to be honest, as the above states its just perfecting the already known formula.

Above the Castle is certainly an interesting new skip, but I think for the most part your title is overselling it. Nothing else in the video has any chance of being RTA viable for a full game run literally ever
But it MIGHT revitalize some amount of IL competition in the game. Even if ice flower + penguin suit is fundamentally unviable as an RTA route for reasons that are hopefully obvious, the TAS may incentivize people to grind out some IL world records by really micro-optimizing their slides
