- For over a decade, the theoretical fastest Super Mario Bros. speedruns were known to be 4 minutes 54 seconds long. Since then, new glitches and strategies have been used by speedrunners to finally achieve 4:54. This is the story on how Mario speedrunners broke the final second barrier, and what to expect from future speedruns. Enjoy!

You explained the frame rule without mentioning a bus? Inconceivable!

@@francesfarmer3874 Every so many frames the game checks for the end of a level. If you miss that end-level-check, you have to wait for the next one. So saving one frame doesn't save you any time unless that one frame gets you to an earlier check. Just like every so many minutes, a bus comes to pick people up at a bus stop, and getting there earlier doesn't save you time on your trip unless you get to take an earlier bus because of it.

@@vilanokaizo are you okay. remember the first 3 letters of stroke: STR. S stands for smile, make sure that your facial muscles are working correctly. T stands for talk, make sure that you can talk in a coherent sentence. R stands for reach, can you reach both of your arms up as high as possible. If one or more of these isn't the case, you may be suffering from the early stages of a stroke.

3 days ago we saw the first 4,54.8xx, insane how dedicated and precise these top level runners are! And awesome video as always!
That means in Super Mario Bros. Extended, Niftski must save 2 framerules, both from 8-3 or 1 from 4-2 and 1 from 8-3, and play world 8-4 6-7 frames faster for a 4:53!

If I were doing Warpless runs under Twin Galaxies, to compensate for the no glitch rules, I'd instead fill the run with aggressive Bowser kills.

I guess most game has the same potentiall atleast if they were to be as popular and speedrun'd as much as SMB. But its really beautiful, ive been thinking how do i explain this to ppl who has no intrest in games at all. "it would be like a f1 driver beating a lap record" is the closest i get. but to be fair. that feels like its still not enough to explain how technically impressive it is

I doubt there are many but in the case of some extremely short games such as Dragster for the Atari 2600 real time and TSA is tied at 5.57 seconds.
@@XsigmaZ nah the frame rule is needed for keeping it this close. If the frame rule didn't exist the tas would be a few secs ahead. Not many games have this kind of segmented structure, so this may be the only one that will be this ridiculously close without being sub 1 minute.

so, if some tas or strathunter found 1 framerule anywhere in the game, that's the second barrier, but it's been 10 years since the last framerules to be saved were found.
The 8-2 pipe jump is not a wall jump, just a really really precise jump. You are jumping off the top of the pipe. You do kind of clip up onto the top of the pipe by a couple pixels, but that's just how corners work.
I don't really watch speedrunning content most of the time but when it's from you, it's explained so well, all the advanced techniques are made to be digestible, and your narration is *so* good, it makes it really feel like a compelling story, you're criminally underrated. Wishing nothing but the best for you.
4:54.8 has been achieved, now they're grinding to get down to 4:54.7, the level of dedication the top speedrunners have is absolutely insane.

@@inferno23_ you mean the double fast accel in the first room of 8-4 that saves 1 frame? If it wouldnt be humanly possible, it wouldnt be included in the human tas. Also Lekukie and Niftski have both already done that 1 frame timesave in a 8-4 IL run more than a year ago, meaning that its very much possible, just insanly hard

You ever thought of implementing a split setup for your runs? That way people could actually see your time and splits? I mean Kosmic and every other runner has them and I am wondering why you dont. I mean there is space up top for the splits and your time on the bottom for the timer on the right side so you dont have to change your overlays out as I can see enough space for everything already.

I remember like 2 years ago seeing niftski on the leader boards and thinking, frick, how does he do that with a keyboard. and now I am utterly confuzzled by everything he does, and how everyone does the tricks, it's so insane.

@@sawyersmith4999 it depends on what you are used to if you are used with original controller then other controller will be uncomfortable to use with it also apply to any other controller like keyboard,virtual controller and other.but if you trained with other controllers then you can get used to it

SMB1 isn't dead, but it definitely has chilled. Only one serious contender has posted since Niftski's achievement. (as of early September 2021)

Such optimisation for speedrun makes me think - if someone made a mod of the game where everything is the same, expect the frame rules are now gone and you complete the level the frame right after, how much time it will save?

The reason why glitches are banned in Twin Galaxies is because some people can use glitches to manipulate the game in sending you to the ending screen without playing the game, and they think it is considered cheating as it ruins the purpose of playing the game if you can execute a glitch that sends you to the end right away, and they thought all glitches have that capability.

The last possibility to improve the times in speedruns is to move faster than the rest of the world. That means, according to Albert Einstein, one would have to be in a very fast spaceship. The faster the spaceship flies, the slower time passes relative to the people who are on earth. If you were to fly at exactly the speed of light in the end (which is impossible in reality), then time would even stand still completely and you could play Super Mario Bros in zero seconds, no matter how you play. So if a TOP player were to play SMB1 in one of the fastest aircraft in the world, he could save a few millionths of a second. Another possibility would be to get as close as possible to the Earth's core, because the closer you get to the Earth's core, the slower time passes. It would be even more exciting if you played SMB in a black hole. There it might even be possible to achieve a time with a negative sign, i.e. -5min.54sec.
Timing is done relative to the game speed, not relative to earth

By the way, computer chips are in sync with spacetime, so, even if you go fast it wouldn't save time, as one second in spacetime correlates to one second the electricity passes through the computer chips, so the game would just move slower, but it would help as swag tricks would be easier.
However, using quantum mechanics, anything is possible. In the future, NASA will come up with different projects using quantum mechanics, like the time machine project, the superpowers project, the interstellar travel project, if that succeeds, then they would turn it into an intergalactic travel project, the Holocene-Anthropocene project, enlarging/shrinking matter project, the sub-Absolute Zero project, the antimatter clone project, the creation of matter project, the spiritual project (where you can be conscious when you sleep), and the virtual portal project. The Virtual Portal Project is going to be the best, as it involves opening a portal to the Metaverse, where 6D travel is possible, where humans can live in fantasy worlds in games and movies and using their magical elements to help them in their daily lives. Effects from a Mario mushroom includes super size, super strength, super resistance, and super slowness unless if humans used quantum physics to defy the square-cube law, then super slowness wouldn't be an effect. There would also be a Negative project, where humans are bound to create a negative version of anything. This includes negative dimensions (length, width, height, time, and parallel universes, as well as outside-of-reality Multiverses), negative area, negative volume, negative mass (they already achieved this using antimatter), negative density (using antimatter), negative velocity, negative voltage, and negative temperature Traveling faster than light reaches negative velocity, not walking backwards, due to the Pythagorean Theorem. Walking backwards still is positive velocity. The easiest negatives are negative acceleration (deceleration), negative force, negative energy, negative power, negative current, negative resistance, and negative pressure.
But WHAT IF...
Someone find a way to save another 21 frame framerule?

I think I was the one (a non-speedrunner) who originally posed the question of 4m 53s being possible to Bismuth a few years ago and even he said it was impossible to me and I can see that 4m 54.282s being the realistic human best time as well if the theoretical best is 4m 54.032s and cant be improved any lower. Unless if someone finds some crazy new strat (in which the game is running out of altogether and he DID point some possibilities but could never be done by a human OR TAS but I forgot what they were since its been so long) and i am beginning to think with how little time that is being shaved off after the 4m 54s has been achieved, 4m 53s would forever remain a "pipe" dream. I can honestly see that now. It would be killer to see 4m 53s be achieved but not now as pretty much every viable frame rule has been exhausted, every possible trick is nearly implemented and speed gain reached, it is just impossible. Now we wait to find out who would be the one to pull off the 4m 54.282s final time. I know that could be a few years away but I know it is going to happen sooner or later.

I believe the emulator Niftski uses prevents simultaneous left+right and up+down

Hey man, nice video! But i have one question, i am not able to run rom hacks in fceux, i already have the fds bios, but when i select the ips file, it says 'choose from archive', but why? Cant it just run the rom hack when i select the ips over the original rom? Bc i want to make a few TASES On the practice rom hack and im running into a problem, so can you maybe help me?
You have to patch a ROM with the IPS file first
EDIT: Forgot FCEUX supports automatic IPS patching. Make sure the filenames are EXACTLY the same. If the ROM or IPS is zipped, be sure to select the correct file when it asks you to choose.

5:52 I know you probably know this, but you make it seem as if fpg is subpixel perfect, where in reality it is subpixel precise, down to 4 subpixels in precision, or 1/4th of a pixel
