The ORAS remakes design for Steven really killed it. The steel cuffs and those silver buttons are what I consider the perfect level of "clear typing, but still has his own style". A perfect middle ground between Jasmine from Gold/Silver where it's honestly tough to tell she's a Steel type user and a certain Kalos trainer which just screams "STEEL" to an excessive degree. And that black/red/purple suit combo? I want that suit right goddamn now.
I feel like Jasmine outfit is meant to be deceptive and contradictory for her typing, I kinda love it for that, give the cute and innocent vibe only to be the most rough and solid type in the game

I feel like nobody notices that Wattson wears a yellow jumpsuit in both the original RSE and ORAS designs, in the original design he's wearing a brown sweater over it and in ORAS he's wearing an open tropical shirt over it (which makes more sense given Hoenn's warmer climate tbh)
With the ORAS designs of Brendan and May, the issue I see is that they wanted to go for an all environment approach with what they were wearing. A big theme within the Hoenn games was the balance with Nature, i.e. having an exactly even number of land and water routes. I think they were trying to portray this with Brendan and May by having them wear clothes that serve to help them in the various environments in hoenn. With the clothes being this blend of wetsuit + bicyclist clothes. I feel like it would have worked better if they just had different clothes for adapting to different environments, but i imagine coding in multiple designs like that would have been a bit much.
This is the first comment giving environmental context that I can get down with. Like - we get it, Hoenn is tropical, but I feel like that was a little too literal and came at the expense of more interesting outfits (at least for the players). Love the idea of outfit switches - especially since several characters are still very layered 🤷🏽♂️

It's the very light gossamer material that adds another layer to her design. I thought it was just the shading of the light hitting the sleeves, but you can DEFINITELY see her wrists through the cuffs.
A thing I notice and appreciate about the ORAS redesigns is the increased attention paid to global location and profession (following Gen 5 and 6 where they start heavily conveying where those games are set in character outfits). The region of Japan Hoenn is based on is almost tropical, so the redesigns really lighten the clothing or switch to that athleisure compression material. But also Flannery having a hot spring towel as a belt, and Norman wearing geta sandals to match his dojo. Space is a sub-theme for the psychic type (we'll see it again with Olympia in Gen 6) so Tate & Liza get more of it in their redesign. The pokeball planet applique on the trousers is very cute IMO!
Adding to the space theme. The Town where their gym is have the hoenn space Center. And in the delta episode they help the MC in their mission to space.

I personally appreciate it when the type element isn’t too on the nose. Designs like Phoebe’s and Jasmine’s (from Johto) really stand out to me because the seeming disconnect between their typing and their appearance makes me fill in the gap and gives them more dimension. In the Manga May and Brendam (or Ruby and Sapphire in this case) have an unique dynamic related to their gender. The girl has a lot of traditionally masculine traits, and the boy has a lot of traditionally feminine traits. Even though the Manga comes out after the games, I think May's outfit suits the tomboy vibe she has in the manga well.
I had forgotten about this manga, I read it so many years ago. And the cool thing is that these "opposite" traits to their gender were because of each other. May became more masculine because of Brendan and he became more feminine because of her.
I clicked through to Wallace I'm gonna be honest and I was not disappointed. So glad you assessed all his looks. Really interesting analysis, especially comparing his cape to other dragon-type/champion trainers. He truly is serving additional excellence in this regard. I'm such a huge fan of his ORAS redesign and was so glad to see your commentary here.
I do agree with your May assessment. Every iteration they took with her got worse. RS was this sporty tomboyish girl, E was still that but the design and colors felt washed out and unimpressive (and she looks so pale, girl lives in one of the sunniest most summery regions and looks like she'll ignite if she walks past a window let alone outside), ORAS just tosses her design entirely and amps of the cutesy girliness. Which, fair, she's 12, but what happened to the island hopping, desert crossing, volcano trecking, cave exploring, eco-terrorist fighting daughter of Norman/daughter of Prof Birch? She looks like she'd never make it out of Littleroot Town because she's too afraid of the Wurmples in the tall grass. Brendan didn't really have that problem. I guess there was no internal difficulties on what kind of masculine identity the devs wanted to present with him, but May definitely felt like they didn't know how feminine they wanted her to be. ORAS definitely stripped them both of that cooler edge as you said though. Also ORAS Brendan looks like he took some serious drugs and can't come down. The funny thing about your fashion assessment of Flannery is that she actually had major confidence problems as a Gym Leader because she was so new to it.

I've been getting lots of "tropical" reasons behind outfit changes, but if we're being so literal - then many characters should have been more tan (maybe not as dark as Team Aqua, but some more color). And why would Brendan still be wearing a beanie (the idea of it being a head band makes more sense to me) ... Not that it matters thaaaat much to me, but just highlights how open-ended character design can be, and reflects the varying priorities that people place onto it. I can tell from my comments that A LOT of people lean more into the lore/practicality piece - while I care more about style and more played-up typing concept. A detail I find interesting is that contests have 5 categories: Cute, Beauty, Tough, Cool and Smart; May's contest fit is clearly modeled after Cute, and Brendan's is inspired by Cool. Similarly to the contest specific pikachu outfits.

Fun fact about Anabel, in the anime, Ash and Co literally did not even clock Anabel as the Brain nor even as a Girl, and it was actually a plot point of the episode she debuted in. So she 100% basks and lives in the idea of being androgynous. And that's even (unintentionally?) Used in her redesign for USUM as she wears a suit which I know a lot of my AFAB non-binary friends did for formal events
I’m sure someone’s already said it but that’s not actually a headband that Brendan’s wearing, it’s a beanie. He has brown hair like May, and it is really hard to see in his original design, but later on they make his hair more visible so you can tell (even if it does look like he has white hair; idk why they made it so spiky lmao)
It's crazy I watched your video earlier on the villain teams, with you talking about how the galactic admins outfits were a little too much on the plain/samey side, and literally hours ago we get huge pokemon leaks including those characters original beta designs, and we were kinda robbed. Although the bar was on the floor.
Roxanne's design seems to be less focused on type, and more on her signature Pokemon "Nosepass" which has similar colors. Even her neck accessory looks like its big nose.
I think Roxanne's design is supposed to resemble Nosepass more than just rock in general. At least her original design is. Her dress is the same color as its body and her pink-red resembles the nose. The tie/neck-wear even flows at the bottom to resemble the shape of nostrils!
I actually liked Spencer's look. It gave me a monk/mage type of vibe with the staff. And I LOVE when male characters have the diagonal cut off with the shirt. That with the blue and orange reminds me of Donovan Baine from Darkstalkers.

With the contest designs, they were definitely leaning almost exclusively into JP idol culture. With May's being a very stereotypical Idol dress and Brendan's leaning into more Visual Kei fashion

Yeah, the ORAS redesigns were much appreciated for a lot of the characters, with a lot more shorter sleeves and a few sandals to fit Hoenn's warmer climate. I do agree that May got too cutesy-looking in her main outfit but I don't mind Brendan's new look. And Brawly was my favorite gym leader in the original games so I liked that his redesign emphasized his type specialty further, especially the toe shoes.
The first gym leader outfit in the original games was the same color as rockpass her signature pokemon , the same with the flying type gym leader her colors were the same as her seagull pokemon
two things: love the updated look on wattson, hoen is supposed to be kinda sub-tropical, so wearing what i assume is an unzipped turtleneck over a jumpsuit would just be hell. as for juan i don't think those are boots, i think he's just wearing the white shoes and what you see there on his legs is him wearing a wetsuit under his outfit.
May’s contest look reminds me of jpop idols, I think it makes sense in the context of what a Japanese girl would want to wear at what’s essentially a beauty pageant

I do agree that ORAS Brendan is significantly less appealing than both the Ruby and Sapphire and the Emerald designs, but one thing I can appreciate is the idea that it’s more of a wet suit that works as regular clothing. I think it makes a lot more sense for the adventure you’re having in the tropical Hoenn region
So, the thing about the Gym Leaders, is that beginning with this generation, they starting adding side-jobs to the Leaders (i suppose being one doesn't pay the bills lmao). Roxanne not being so obviously a Rock Type Trainer and her outfit being more on the formal/simple side is because she's a Teacher. Brawly is a surfer, Wattson is a Electricist, Flannery has the hot springs, Norman has a dojo, Winona is an aviator, i'm not sure what Tate and Liza are suppose to be, and Wallace/Juan are Contest Coordinators. Also, i think the changes to more light clothes in the remake is because Hoenn is suppose to be a Tropical Region, so it does makes sense they changed the outfits from the original that were more... heavy. I've been watching your videos and I really love your content, as i'm really into Character Design.

The reason behind Phoebe’s design is in the lore. She’s associated with Mt. Pyre where spirits go to rest. Her grandmother guards the orbs.

I've been binge watching your vids since like 3 days ago after watching your pokemon villains one, I'm obsessed with them, so much fun. I love your energy and the commentary you provide, I'm really passionate about character design, and the fashion is so important for that, but it's not something I see get much focus, so your content feels super refreshing, this series is great!
I know you're probably getting a lot of different recommendations, but if I may, I think an anime worth checking out is Cardcaptor Sakura, it's a magical girl, but she gets different outfits in almost every episode, there's so much good stuff in there and I would love to hear what you've got to say!!

A detail I find interesting is that contests have 5 categories: Cute, Beauty, Tough, Cool and Smart;
May's contest fit is clearly modeled after Cute, and Brendan's is inspired by Cool. Similarly to the contest specific pikachu outfits.
The only thing that associates Phoebe and Ghost for me is the lighting and shadow in her art which gives the subtle menacing aura of ghost.
Glad to know I'm not the only one who notices this. She even has this washed out look. Love the subtlety.

Fun fact about Anabel, in the anime, Ash and Co literally did not even clock Anabel as the Brain nor even as a Girl, and it was actually a plot point of the episode she debuted in. So she 100% basks and lives in the idea of being androgynous.
And that's even (unintentionally?) Used in her redesign for USUM as she wears a suit which I know a lot of my AFAB non-binary friends did for formal events
I’m sure someone’s already said it but that’s not actually a headband that Brendan’s wearing, it’s a beanie. He has brown hair like May, and it is really hard to see in his original design, but later on they make his hair more visible so you can tell (even if it does look like he has white hair; idk why they made it so spiky lmao)

It's crazy I watched your video earlier on the villain teams, with you talking about how the galactic admins outfits were a little too much on the plain/samey side, and literally hours ago we get huge pokemon leaks including those characters original beta designs, and we were kinda robbed. Although the bar was on the floor.
The beta outfits were sooo good, like thematically faithful but elegant and confident. It's a shame they went for The Jetsons disguises instead.
Roxanne's design seems to be less focused on type, and more on her signature Pokemon "Nosepass" which has similar colors. Even her neck accessory looks like its big nose.
Yep - and an additional accessory, like the mentioned earrings, could help pay off the typing more
I think Roxanne's design is supposed to resemble Nosepass more than just rock in general. At least her original design is. Her dress is the same color as its body and her pink-red resembles the nose. The tie/neck-wear even flows at the bottom to resemble the shape of nostrils!

I actually liked Spencer's look. It gave me a monk/mage type of vibe with the staff. And I LOVE when male characters have the diagonal cut off with the shirt. That with the blue and orange reminds me of Donovan Baine from Darkstalkers.
Wattson's newer design's shirt has hibiscus flowers but the stems are lightning bolts, not storm clouds! I never noticed it until I saw the picture!
It's been shared 👍🏽 - it's a cool twist on storm clouds 🌩️🌩️🌩️ where else would the lightning be coming from...
@@XDF Hmmm I don't think there's storm clouds, but I can see how that would be cool! They are meant to be hibiscus flowers because the design plays off of Mauville City's beachside location- as well as a play on a classic 'hawaiian print' shirt! Glad someone had shared it previously!! 😁

With the contest designs, they were definitely leaning almost exclusively into JP idol culture. With May's being a very stereotypical Idol dress and Brendan's leaning into more Visual Kei fashion

Yeah, the ORAS redesigns were much appreciated for a lot of the characters, with a lot more shorter sleeves and a few sandals to fit Hoenn's warmer climate. I do agree that May got too cutesy-looking in her main outfit but I don't mind Brendan's new look. And Brawly was my favorite gym leader in the original games so I liked that his redesign emphasized his type specialty further, especially the toe shoes.
The first gym leader outfit in the original games was the same color as rockpass her signature pokemon , the same with the flying type gym leader her colors were the same as her seagull pokemon

love the updated look on wattson, hoen is supposed to be kinda sub-tropical, so wearing what i assume is an unzipped turtleneck over a jumpsuit would just be hell.
as for juan i don't think those are boots, i think he's just wearing the white shoes and what you see there on his legs is him wearing a wetsuit under his outfit.

I do agree that ORAS Brendan is significantly less appealing than both the Ruby and Sapphire and the Emerald designs, but one thing I can appreciate is the idea that it’s more of a wet suit that works as regular clothing. I think it makes a lot more sense for the adventure you’re having in the tropical Hoenn region
So, the thing about the Gym Leaders, is that beginning with this generation, they starting adding side-jobs to the Leaders (i suppose being one doesn't pay the bills lmao).
Roxanne not being so obviously a Rock Type Trainer and her outfit being more on the formal/simple side is because she's a Teacher.
Brawly is a surfer, Wattson is a Electricist, Flannery has the hot springs, Norman has a dojo, Winona is an aviator, i'm not sure what Tate and Liza are suppose to be, and Wallace/Juan are Contest Coordinators.
Also, i think the changes to more light clothes in the remake is because Hoenn is suppose to be a Tropical Region, so it does makes sense they changed the outfits from the original that were more... heavy.

Man, i definitely understand the change to something a lot more summery because yeah, it makes sense. like, dude, OG Ruby and Sapphire Brendan would be dying in the heat in those long sleeved dark red/black clothes. but boy, did he lose his 2005 edge with that suit jacket and the loss of his iconic fingerless gloves. it is so sad. lol
