  • Good evening my friends. In this episode we're going way back in time with this old school aftershave. Known as an American Classic, this aftershave was invented in Paris until it later became one of the most famous aftershaves in the US. This is a great scent called Clubman Original by Pinaud from the 1990s. No exact date is available for this cologne.
    The Notes:
The notes are unknown for this fragrance so I will tell you my views on what I think of the scent from my nose.
The top is very powdery, filled with musk, and oakmoss with a tiny bit of Lemon to add the freshness. It is yet also very clean and satisfying, quite mature from first sniff too.
The midde is beautiful. It's very clean, soft and floral. I can detect geranium, but the Lemon is still there, more softer though.
And the drydown is just typical drydown heaven. It smells like smooth musk, very soft, with a very light citrus and musk combination.
Now my ratings for Clubman by Pinaud are good. This is one of my favourate aftershaves for these reasons.
Smell: Amazing! The best barbershop I have ever smelt since Quorum by Puig! I will give this a 7/10. Not bad for an aftershave formula.
Type of fragrance: Casual. It's a chilltime sort of fragrance. A nice independant man's scent.
Longevity: Decent, I get 6-7 hours. That's really good again for an aftershave formula.
Silage: Not bad, about 2 feet away.
Thank you for reading and watching my review!

Clubman Whiskey Woods is the best aftershave fragrance in the line. Notes are Whiskey, tobacco leaf, woods and bergamot.

Pee-know is how you pronounce his name. I love the classic, the vanilla, and the pink fragrances of this aftershave! I decant the aftershave in an atomizer.

I became aware of this fragrance when I was in the military. When I would get my hair cut at the on base barbershop the barber would always use this on the back of my neck after trimming it. It's a wonderful scent, one that I continue to use to this day. I find it to be both professional and classic.

+Joe Cochran Hello Joe I'm sorry It's taken me a long time to get back to your comment. Everything you said was spot on. It's classic and yes indeed a very professional classy scent! I'm glad you love it! I would love to experience this at barbershop sometime! Thank you for commenting and watching my friend, stay safe!

Before one of my barbers retired, he would instead put Brut on my hair after cutting it, and I think this variety of Clubman smells a little like that, only subtler and longer lasting.

Clubman was released by the Klotz family between 1930 and 1950. There is some history about it online but it wasn't released in the 1800s.

The scent goes back to Pinaud's Roman Smelling Salts from the 1800's.

    Matt,
The barber shops in the United States smelled like a combination of Clubman, Bay Rum and Lilac Vegetal in the 1960s and 1970s. After your haircut the barbers would brush the clipping off your neck with a brush that they dusted down with Clubman talc.

Fragrances do, indeed, evoke memories. My experience with barber shops in the States is exactly like high2hal’s, posted above --- except I can remember them from the 1950s, too! Since, I’ve always kept a bottle of the Pinaud’s Original. Although I wear a full beard, I occasionally splash it on to wear around the house just to conjure those memories. Oh, and in the description box you state “ . . . from the 1990s." We know you mean the 1890s, so I hope you can correct that with an edit!

When I lived in Greensboro, NC my barber did this. The guy was old school and had been cutting hair since the early 70's. Great memories!

you should check out the clubman website . their hair products are great also and I use the classic scent you have and the vanilla , I also use the Clubman shave soap for wet shaving . I remember smelling Clubman from the old barber shops My grandfather took me to. it is low cost compared to the mainstream men's grooming products and in my opinion out performs the high dollar products out there now .

+Jason Bowers Hello Jason I'm sorry it's taken me a MONTH to respond to your comment. I have looked on their website and it's brilliant, I am really interested in trying the Vanilla Pinaud becuase a lot of people have requested me to try it! I do think that the Pinaud company is timeless, litterally. Thanks for watching mate! Take care.

I had the Special Reserve, & it's awesome & great smelling. Now I have Bay Rum, & I'm never getting it again. Next I'm going to try Sally's Beauty Supply $7 12 oz. regular Pinaud like your video. I hope it last as long as Special Reserve.

Clubman sounds really nice--and I like cheap--but I'm not a aftershave wearer so I'll to think about this one. Okay, it's only $8 so I'll add a bottle to my cart during my next Amazon purchase.

Yeah I remember I wasn't too keen on aftershaves too once upon a time. But since I went to America I started getting into them due to their history and Clubman sure does have a history! Thanks for watching man ☺

Well Special Reserve is one that is bold, and will last all day long. A little goes a long way with that one for sure. The Bay Rum on the other hand, does not last very long at all.

I bought the three, gel, talc, and aftershave for about $25 a couple days ago. After hearing all the good things I thought it was worth owning. Definitely not for me. The colour looks strangely like urine. As for the scent, I suppose Brut 33 copied this old classic scent, (it's that old). Both scents and any aftershaves like this should have gone extinct a long time ago. The gel will make your hair smell like the aftershave and the scent will not wash out easily. My earliest memory of this smell was from the 70's but I'm sure this stuff has been irritating the crap out of many men and women for a long time before then. I was going to throw all three of these products in the garbage a day after trying them but instead I took them to a local barber that does decent cuts although he finishes off his cuts with Brut 33, much to my disliking. Just having this around on a shelf will effect the general air quality of your space and to walk around with it on in public will affect those with scent sensitivities and kick up some deep psychological dust from childhood.
As a new wet shave enthusiast I am open to the heritage scents of Clubman Pinaud and use watered down applications of the hair tonics Portugal or Quinine after my straight shaves. I am excited about checking out the Jeris Orange rub toner for its extreme menthol post shave burn and cool down but if it follows me around all day like a bad scent it's not sitting in my shelf just because it looks good.
