I’ve always worn Brut aftershave and deodorant. I remember when one of my high school classmates smelled my deodorant and was heavily impressed. When I started working in retail, I would get compliments on my smell. I love Brut and my father and grandfather wore it. I actually developed an allergy to most deodorants especially the Old Spice deos and had to choose between two brands that had different active ingredients in them. Those two were Sure and Brut. That was entry into Brut and what would become my entrance into fragrance. It started with Brut and then original Paco Rabanne and now anything that smells good under the sun :)
Pinaud Clubman became my daily a couple years ago. After many years of having long hair, I decided to change it up and go short. I was looking and feeling fresh and crisp and they were selling bottles of Clubman at the counter. Using Pinaud products gives me that barber fresh feeling every time I shave. I like that it's not as potent as some of the others, so as a daily-wear it even works around people who dislike strong colognes. Also, great ratings on the Brut and Old Spice! Those two always have a place on my shelf. English Leather is my grandpa's scent that I started wearing in my 20's. Sharp stab in the nose at first, but mellows out, soft and powdery in a way that (imho) DOESN'T detract from the manliness score 👍 Great video!
I still remember my Granddad putting on Brute when he was doing his after-shower routine, shaving, etc. Such a classic scent, not super commonly used now as most people don’t seem to wear fragrances on an everyday basis. Such a nostalgic scent which is why there’s a bottle in my drawer.
But they changed the formula, I noticed the new lettering on the bottles not in the lime green banner smells way different especially in the classic splash on
I’ve used or smelled all of these back in the day. The one I still use & love is Pinaud Clubmen. Newer aftershaves I’d recommend is Fine American Blend and their Green Vetiver.
recently I bought English Leather cologne (I got two bottles of 240 ml each) as they were very cheap and I wasn't disappointed as the fragrance still keeps its integrity and character; it's been reformulated many times (which fragrance from the old glorious past hasn't been reformulated?), all of them including my most 4 beloved fragrances of all time(QUORUM, ARAMIS, YATAGAN and AGUA BRAVA); but English Leather is a good cologne, it may not be a crowd-pleaser but it smells like a man should smell.
Brut is a fragrance that if you Love it, you Love it. But if you don’t; you can’t stand it. Luckily, my Father and I fall into the former category. My Brother doesn’t like Brut. I also have old Spice but it is so nostalgic that I wear it when I going to be near family or want to be reminded of them. It reminds me of my Maternal- Grandfather. So I can’t be without it. Stetson is just good I Love smelling it but I never can tell when to use it. I carry an assortment of 4: Brut, Proraso, Old Spice, and Stetson. To me they are all fantastic. My nephew came over one day and saw some of my shaving lotions and picked Stetson. My other younger nephew chose Proraso. I usually pick these affordable aftershaves over some of my expensive fragrances. You can have a lot more fun with them. They are just So classic.
My dad wore Stetson all the time when I was growing up, and still does on occasion now. He even put some on me for special occasions when I was little. I love the stuff and will always have fond memories of it. It's the scent I associate most with my dad, just like how Mugler Angel is the scent I associate most with my mom.
At 5 USD, the Denim original aftershave is a woody/spicy fragrance which lasts over 8hrs. The dry-down smells like typical barbershop aftershave, otherwise it feels like a complete fragrance to my nose. I'd love to know your thoughts if you have sniffed it before! Guess it isn't as well known in the USA.
I was about to comment the same thing. It's in that rang of brut and old spice, it has its own history and nostalgic smell to it. Good classic manly scent. They also have black, gold and sensitive version where I live although I haven't tried those. I also remember there was a green one a while ago

These videos help me a lot, I lost my sense of smell when I was four so I don’t really know much about scents but I still want to smell good for girls I’m attracted to but I never know where to start
I'm not really into perfumes but I have had few of the expensive ones. However I almost never received a compliment for them, not that I needed to, but still you would expect them every once in a while and they were well reputable perfumes. However when I put an aftershave I get compliments or at least acknowledgement 90% of the time, and they were all cheap like brut, denim or some less known brands. Aftershaves are really underrated if you want a good scent on you and they might even beat your 100$ perfume.
I started wearing Stetson in 1990, got it from a DJ at a C&W dance club on my 18th birthday, My brother set up a huge Birthday party that night was great. I never wore aftershave or cologne before that. I've tried so many types of Aftershaves and colognes but I've always gone back to Stetson, I always get comments on how good I smell wearing it. FYI- Christmas is always a great time to buy a bottle or two. They always have a box set very cheap. I got one this past Xmas for 9.99 came with two bottles
I have only had the Proraso aftershave out of these options and I absolutely love it! Especially during summer, it is such a refreshing scent and feel to splash on your face after a morning shave! I will have to try all of the other options in this video now too haha
Just bought the Stetson!! Are you perhaps able to make a video, like you did with the accessories video, on essential/best wardrobe pieces, or ones that are most attractive to women? I know you have a playlist on wardrobe on essential wardrobe items already. Thanks
65 yr oldster, here. Wore English Leather and Brut as a dating teen. Now wear Old Spice, Clubman, and cannot give my most worn -- Aqua Velva! Would like to ho back to EL, but I'm cheap.
my experience has been that women LOVE the scent that their father used to wear. they may recognize that or it may be unconscious on their parts but it. is. fact.
I’ve been shaving for 47 yrs and I go straight to the razor without shave cream and use Brut not as a lotion but as for the smell when we go out. I did use Stetson in the early eighties for awhile but found it too overwhelming for me or what a man should smell like. I like the Brut as it fades down after a few hours.
I think it’s great that you touch base on some of these. Pinaud is my scent. I usually pair it up w Kouros or wild country by Avon. Or even santos de Cartier. Brut is ok but the original spray bottle only lasts 1 hour. But the classics are classic for a reason.
Good morning! I actually have never used these after shaves before (actually I've stopped using aftershaves a few years ago), but I'm intrigued by the scents. Especially Canoe and Stetson. Great reviews Brian! - Han
I don't think Skin Bracer was on your list. It is very common, but it truly does treat and heal the skin, good for razor burn, and a pleasant scent to boot.
I do like Brut, but my father wore it, so I stick to other scents. I’m surprised at little love for Aqua Velva, as it reminds me of a brighter, less peppery Brut. My favorite cheapie is Aqua Velva Musk, but a little goes a very long way so I cut it with witch hazel. I may try Jovan Musk after the AV Musk runs out. I tried Skin Bracer - it quickly dries down to talc/baby powder, which is a no go for me. I prefer Stetson Cooling Moisture which is more complex for longer, but unfortunately it also ends up in baby powder territory after a few hours. I’ve yet to try Clubman Pinaud. I have heard good things about their Citrus Musk. I have also yet to try a bay rum variant, but I just ordered Suavecito Bay Rum and so looking forward to that. Perhaps I should also grab some Old Spice next time I am at the store.
Hi Brian, I'm new to your channel and I just wanted to give you a big THAAANK YOU! You are awesome and your content is amazing. You got yourself a new fan.

It's a shame Old Spice isn't strong like it used to be. The smell would explode out of the bottle and practically fill an entire house once it was opened up and used.
I worked at Bob's Mens Shop at Knott's Berry Farm a few years in the early 1980's to work my way through college and we sold several of these fragrances. Stetson was one of my favorites. Lagerfeld was a bit on the sweet sid. And Polo was the new rage but everyone wore it so I refrained. But one that I discovered there was Halston Z-14 which I still use today. The ladies complement the Halston frequently. Great work on your channel. Keep it up.
Halston Z-14 is a fantastic cologne...I wore it for years when it came out, I really need to get another bottle...thanks for mentioning it....also had not heard Knott's Berry Farm in a long time, lol
After recent purchases of much more pricy EDP from Tumi (Spring/Summer 'Atlas' and Fall/Winter '°Continuum' I find it nearly impossible to use the Z14. Still Halston Z14 is a decent price point.
I just tried out Stetson based on purely your review. It smells a bit retro, at the beginning its quite strong but it holds for the whole day and smoothens out during the day. I really like it and also my wife likes it on me. I'm 40 by the way. Anyhow, thanks for the vid and the tips.
I was surprised to see Stetson ranked so highly. I can remember the last time I smelled it and was not impressed. My friend loves it though. I’ll with my Brut.
I think you got most, but I’d swap out the Prorosa green for the red which has a nice sandalwood scent. You also need a Bay Rum, Gabels is good for the price or Clubmans Virgin Island Bay Rum. Also need a Lime, Royall Lime is nice and a Musk Jovan is fine for the price.
When experimenting for myself on the various scent lines presented in this video I'd find myself disappointed with the fragrance longevity and fade. But I was wrong, I learned that as the fragrance lightens and tones down it became a more pleasant scent. One wearing it cannot identify the subtle transition but the feedback received while experimenting was always positive mid day into evening when I believed the scent had already dissipated.
If you smelled Hai Karate you would’ve put Stetson in 2nd. Also I highly suggest you try the other Pinaud Clubman cologne after shaves specifically the Musk, Special reserve, Lime sec, Citrus Musk, Virgin Island Bay Rum, and classic Vanilla. Don’t get me wrong the original aftershave smells good but all the ones I just mentioned to me smell 10 times better. When ever I wore any of those I always got compliments saying you smell great.
I used to wear Jade East by Swank in late '60s when I was in high school. (The current "Jade East" smells like baby powder with a hint of baby's piss. Regency or Songo.) The closest I can find is Canoe and Wild Country.
The original Old Spice in the glass bottle before P&G took it over was MUCH much better .You can still order the original glass bottle version of Old Spice from India.
Nice video! I’m getting back into fragrances & even though I have a full beard and don’t shave in the traditional sense, I appreciate these suggestions. Keep em coming.
Outstanding video, Brian. Have me wanting to try Brut and Stetson. Already a fan of Clubman. IMO, aramis classic after shave, and Pour Monsieur after shave deserve consideration. I have and love both. Of course, aramis after shave is readily available, whereas Pour Monsieur not so much.
I agree with you about Brut, it really does smell the best. I've never met a person who said it gave them a headache. You should've compared price points by dollar per ounce
37 points for Old Spice ! Still came 3rd in your countdown, however i would have it above Brut; Stetson is obviously a US Fragrance and not known much in Europe; sounds like a nice fragrance though.
This is the video I've been looking for! Not interested in expensive foo-foo brands, been an Old Spice user since I was a teenager about 50 years ago. I'll try some of the top picks here for some variety.
Ahh memories.. Brut is probably my favorite (my first aftershave) I remember my barber slapping some clubman on me after each haircut. Gonna have to pick up some old spice to relive some of my grandad and dad's glory as I recall both of them keeping a bottle.
not sure about the others, but I tried the Brut until I deduced it was something in the ingredients accelerating my heart rate and burning my nose. The alcohol denat main ingredient is apparently loaded with ethyl acetate giving the sweet smell. Out of curiosity I tested the fumes with an air quality reader and whoa, the VOC alarm went off the scale within seconds! sorry to have to vote down.
i dont like anything lavender because there are a lot of clothes softners and room freshners that smell like lavender and its usually associated with older women smell, the opposite of the effect i try to accomplice
Gotta say, I always keep an old school post shave scented "tonic" around. Great on hot or warm days, when a balm or opaque lotion is too much. Great for a tight, bracing finish. Currently have Aqua Velva, the blue stuff, in the rotation. IMPORTANTLY, the scent soon disappears and its use doesn't conflict with the day's frag.
All of them great. I was expecting to see Tabac in there as well. This one's truly a "love it or hate it" scent (I stand firmly in the former). Nowadays there are a couple of other lines within the brand, with more modern profiles, but the original is a classic.
Thanks for looking out for both ends of your subscriber base (or even those who just don’t feel like turning to SMN or some thing for aftershave). Keep doing what you’re doing and forget the critics!
I always liked Ted Lapidus cologne. Herd to find but worth the effort to seek out. Costs more than the ones on this list ($35 ballpark) but more bang for the buck because it comes in a larger container than these others. Because not as many men wear it (because it's not as easy to find as the ranked colognes), people notice it more, and women love the smell of it, so: winner.
Most of these have been in my collection over the years. Brut and English Leather in high school/early college, Old Spice, Canoe, and Clubman (my maternal grandfather's signature fragrance) during my Navy and yuppie years, and Stetson (which I still have and wear).
Stetson Black is awesome in my opinion. I've found it to be warmer, more woody, and spicier than the original. It's a great night time cologne for the rugged type and for any age. I'm in my early 30s but I've been using it since I was in highschool.
The fact that Aqua Velva was originally a mouthwash is an Internet myth. The patent application for Aqua Velva in 1917 states that it was for a line of face lotions and after shave preparations.
all of those are good values.... and very decent. I agree almost 100% with your review except i do like Aqua Velva. Of course, i have the original vintage one.
Brian, i think you do an excellent job of comparing some of the best classic after shaves, which bring back memories of my youth. It’s nice to see these products withstand the test of time. I really like your scoring system as I believe it captures and rates these scents in a very fair and consistent manner. For some unknown reason I don’t recall Stetson. Perhaps it’s somewhat related to the date of its release, which I believe you reported as 1981, (the year I got married). I’ll definitely pick up a bottle of Stetson and for nostalgia purposes, I’ll need to get my hands on some Old Spice. I’m wondering if there would be any value in comparing these 10 fragrances with 10 current lower priced, similar products? Brian, do you know why several of the scents you review have such a long lasting scent?. I would have guessed that long lasting scents would be limited to eu de Perfume (sp?). Any thoughts? Anyway, great job with this review/comparison! I really enjoyed the video. It covers all the bases; is succinct, yet doesn’t miss any critical information. Love the format of the video! Keep up the good work Brian...Ed
Thanks, Ed! Appreciate the comment and support so much. To answer your question, yes, eau de parfum (EDP) will always last longer than eau de toilet (EDT).
@john hodgson Thats right. When my dad wore it, it was always the body spray and deodorant. I use the aftershave now. I’d like to try the EDT put out by Brut sometime, but I can’t find it locally. I may have to order it. Whether it’s DO, EDT, or aftershave, I do like the fragrance and it’s nostalgic for me. Plus, you just can’t beat the price.
This is the first He Spoke video I've seen and you hit it out of the park! Brought back great memories of my father with his Old Spice and Brut not to mention Brylcreem for his hair. 😊
I shaved my beard off and had smooth cheeks for a month during quarantine. I could’ve used this video then. The beard is staying, but now I’m curious about how these smell. Well done.
I still have a green bottle of Polo and wear it from time to time. Smelling it brings back powerful memories of being a carefree teenager, driving my V.W. and hanging out at the beach back in the mid 80’s.
Brut has a ‘special reserve’ bottle that you can buy for really cheap online. Fuller fragrance and also better longevity than the aftershave and cologne you normally see at the drugstore.
Thanks for Nicely described reviews❤. Can I use these aftershave as frequents as cologne with atomizer after every hour? If I do it wouldn't they become harmful or injurious to health as they contained massive amounts of alcohol?
Totally agreed as to the winner. I have about 200 fragrances and Stetson, albeit their cologne, is in my top 10. Absolutely beautiful, well constructed amber.
Ive only tried Aqua Velva and Pinaud. I get a lot of compliments just from those two. Since im not sure what the others smell like im curious to find out since the ones i get many compliments on scored the lowest on your list 🤷🏻♂️
Very fond of Stetson- a bit on the heavy side but that's what I want - which is why I'm so let down after I bought Stetson Legend- am I nose blind, or is nothing there?
Thanks for the review. On Amazon, Stetson has a cologne that is actually cheaper than its aftershave. Do you have thoughts on that? Should we consider the Stetson cologne instead of the aftershave? Thanks
Thanks for the great run through, remember most of these. Might have to revisit Brut & Stetson based on your scoring. My old-school aftershave/cologne go-to is Monsieur (Houbigant) Musk. If I'm wearing a cologne, usually use something mild scent-wise like Baxter aftershave balm or tonic.
I'm an Old Spice man. I enjoy Stetson, dabble with Pinaud here and there, and will try other things. But I always go back to Old Spice.

After recent purchases of much more pricy EDP from Tumi (Spring/Summer 'Atlas' and Fall/Winter '°Continuum' I find it nearly impossible to use the Z14. Still Halston Z14 is a decent price point.
My preference is Aqua Velva. Great stuff.
Brut was my first cologne when I first became a teenager. I love the smell!
did you buy it online ?
@@namnguyen-co2ny No, my mom purchased it for me from a department store back in the early 90s. #OldSchool
@@q-storm767 thanks bro
Really appreciate the scoring here. It really helps with my limited experience, as the scent vocabulary can be difficult to decipher without it!
Did you buy regular stetson original cologne or the aftershave?
The only aftershaves I’ve ever tried is brute and aqua velva. I like aqua velva the most.
Sounds great!
QUESTION: in the last shot you used of that bottle of Stetson, I see a razor and shaving brush…. What set is that? Thanks

Was just reading an article on Art of Manliness about these today. Your video complements that nicely!
Sweet! Glad to hear that!
Thanks for the comment, Sandro!
Same! I like using aqua velva because the scent doesn't last long. It won't be in competition with cologne
All of them great. I was expecting to see Tabac in there as well. This one's truly a "love it or hate it" scent (I stand firmly in the former). Nowadays there are a couple of other lines within the brand, with more modern profiles, but the original is a classic.
I would have liked to know where Skin Bracer Original fits in among these. I'll give Stetson a try next. Thanks.
Thanks for looking out for both ends of your subscriber base (or even those who just don’t feel like turning to SMN or some thing for aftershave). Keep doing what you’re doing and forget the critics!
Always! Wait, what critics?!
@@hespokestyle Third day commentors I presume? - Han
The Brut 33, Old Spice and AquaVelva are nectar of the gods.😊👍💯
My grandpa wore Brut from the time it came out until 2019 when he passed. It’s a classic. I like Stetson myself. Great video.
Thank you!
Brian, loved the historical references you provided in this video. Impressive and interesting. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love Stetson. The cologne sprays and after shaves are very long lasting.
My signature scent!
Stetson Black is awesome in my opinion. I've found it to be warmer, more woody, and spicier than the original. It's a great night time cologne for the rugged type and for any age. I'm in my early 30s but I've been using it since I was in highschool.
I ask for Aqua Velva Red Wood
I'm a fan of Vetiver Root, the Aesop deodorant spray isn't that expensive for how long it lasts.
The fact that Aqua Velva was originally a mouthwash is an Internet myth. The patent application for Aqua Velva in 1917 states that it was for a line of face lotions and after shave preparations.
Hey Brian, could you make a video with a few sprezzatura outfits? Just to give us a few ideas
all of those are good values.... and very decent. I agree almost 100% with your review except i do like Aqua Velva. Of course, i have the original vintage one.
Cussons Imperial Leather No. 1 is also worth checking out.
Great video! I really appreciate the history on these!
Best cheap edt from my experience are: Bijan men, Daniel Hechter Charactere and Capucci pour homme. Try them you won't be dissapionted.
My dad wore Brut when I was growing up. Instantly makes me think of him. I’m thinking about trying it out for a while.
Brian, you always look your best! My go to fragrence for years, 4711. Clean, crisp, and very afordable!
Thanks, William! 4711 is great!
Longevity 1
Muy bueno, Excelente guía, muchas gracias. Pregunta: Stetson tiene colonia y after shave, a cual refieres aquí?
After Shave, Si
I was born in late 1950s and I would smell my dad's English leather back in the day. The older, stronger formulation was sublime. Good stuff.
BRUT IS MY FAVORITE
I love my Brut aftershave...cheap and good.
Aqua Velva is still my favourite.
Mennen Skin Bracer is pretty good stuff to.
I am a fan of Old Spice and Brut. I also enjoy Blue Stratos and Denim.
Ive only tried Aqua Velva and Pinaud. I get a lot of compliments just from those two. Since im not sure what the others smell like im curious to find out since the ones i get many compliments on scored the lowest on your list 🤷🏻♂️
Good reviews, I use the proraso Green shaving soap and If I was to say what the sent makes me think of the barber shop. I have ordered the aftershave
Really enjoyed this review.

Thanks
Why not?!
Great job...Stetson was my second signature scent after Jōvan Musk!
Currently using classic Old Spice cologne. What do you guys think about it? I like it
It’s good
