A 90s Goth Fashion Staple That Made Normies Cringe

  • Sorry, I'm not fond of the word 'normies' but damn it, if I can't find a better word. I also don't like 'elder'. It makes me feel like we live in Mordor and wear silver robes while we protect a ring. So hey, you like the song? It's Vandal Moon - Sweet Disaster. Check em out on Bandcamp or Spotify..Or RUclips.
Basics were pretty easy back in the day but sometimes we just wanted to get extravagant with the lace, rushing and billowy layers but when that came to designated gothwear it came with a price tag in the triple digits. When you were a teenage goth or just a goth on a budget, you had to get creative and fortunately enough for us, the sleepwear section of thrift stores once held the answer. Vintage slips and nightgowns when embellished and accessorized right looked on par if not better than what was donning the storefront window of your favorite goth shop. Religious Sex, may she rest in peace. That store was both heaven and torture simultaneously. Look, maybe touch but always leave empty handed. I did get my Pennangalan Victin L5's there in 1999 though for $200.

In Germany we call Non-Goth- or Non-Metal-"Civilians" "Bunte", which translates to "Coloured". It is not easy to translate to English, cause "Coloured" has a different Connotation here than in the U.S.. May be we should best translate it as "Vanillas"?

I was lucky in that my mum was a seamstress. She made long narrow black skirts or fishtail skirts for me and all my friends. Another friends mum was a knitter and knitted us all baggy shapeless jumpers that we shredded and made holes in. We frequented second hand stores or army and navy stores for old uniform blazers that we covered in pins and brooches. There were a few market stalls and small pop up shops where designers sold there own stuff. I remember a beautiful skirt I bought with my Saturday job money that was basically just a front and back held together with straps and buckles. This was in the 80s in Glasgow Scotland

Honestly, I feel like the average piece of everyday clothing I find thrifting has a good chance of being more gross than thrifted slips or nightgowns. I recently had the most awesome thrift store find ever- a pair of 90's Tripp leather pants-but man were they dirtier than any slip or anything like that I've seen in a thrift store. When I first picked them up, they were matte-ish and a dark grey. And after a wash, they're shiny and dark black. The water they soaked in was an absolutely nasty shade of brown. I had a similar situation come from a velvet/lace tank top I got thrifting. The real gross items in the thrift store are "dry clean only" items, and it really shows when I soak them!

80’s punk/goth here👋🏻 it was pretty much the same here…luckily I had the East Village, tons of thrifting, there we’re fortunately a lot of great places…Manic Panic actually sold vintage clothing, in addition to the hair dye that made them famous. I would save every penny I had to buy shoes or a really cool piece from Trash & Vaudeville or Pat Fields. I went to Art School in Chicago and we’d make stuff for extra money by painting jackets, club clothes from lingerie…everything thrifted. Only stores back then were Wax Trax (super expensive) a really fun store called 99th Floor (everyone we knew worked there) or the Alley which I think is still open. We just didn’t have the options everyone has now. You had to put in a lot of effort as well, and wanted to show it off!!

My Grandma got me started in thrifting early because Wednesday was 1/2 off discount for Seniors day. I would just look for anything black on the racks and scored some great pieces that I still own today, like an all-lace, long-sleeve top from the high end store B. Moss, several black g*psy skirts, and some sheer undergarments like you spoke about. I would then put them with the 'pricier' things I got at stores like Hot Topic, 5·7·9, or G&G.

These are absolutely stunning pieces!! The major difference (I think) between vintage lingerie and fancy gowns is how thin the fabric is. I remember things like that being pretty easy to thrift in the 90s. For some reason I never got into the black dye, probably because Mom said no. 😂 But I love certain brights. We thrifted loads of 70s/early 80s floor length gowns, too; if we were lucky they were black or jewel toned but they ran the full gamut of insane shades like lime or tangerine 🍊😝With pastels, sometimes I’d add a floral trim, it was very pre-Raphaelite and ethereal. So apricot or sky blue was acceptable. 🙃😄 Your description of longing for the beautiful goth clothes in shop windows brings back such memories! 🖤Simpler times…💜🖤 It must’ve been delicious torture to window shop in NYC back then…🫠the whole reason I’ve built up a bargain Killstar collection is that it validates my 17-24 year old self and makes her happy. 🖤
PS: Afterpay and Klarna have both worked well for me; I split things into 4 payments with zero interest or fees. It brought my credit score up. The trick is to be conservative and keep track of the payment schedule. But that’s like any credit line. 🤓

I love these looks so much!!!! Do you think you could do a video about the kindergoth looks in the 90s and how slips and other vintage clothing items were used in that? I love a lot of the kindergoth looks i can find, but it seems most kindergoth is buried under gothic lolita, dark girly kei and egirl styles mistagged as kindergoth.

Goth from Germany here - the algorithm brought me to your channel a few days ago, so I watched already a few of your videos.
If I got that right, we must be the same age, and I too got into goth around the early 90s, but living in a super small town in Franconia, there weren't any parties or concerts at all, so I was pretty much on my own until I moved to a bigger town that actually was quite famous in the german subculture, with "Das Ich" und "Goethes Erben" coming from there - and you usually met them at the parties in that area, or even ran into them while getting some groceries ...
But that's a different story. What I wanted to say is that - I don't remember that we did the vintage slip thing over here, I remember there was a lot of crushed velvet and lace, and harem trousers and Pike boots around, and of course - a lot of thrifting and DIY but - this is new to me, and I think it's super interesting because I have to agree that it looks super awesome!
I wore a lot of these loose viscose hippie-ish tunics, with lots of embellishments like mirror sequins, embroidery and velvet facings. Luckily, they were also made in black, and not just earthy tones - and the shops that carried them, also had amazing silver tribal jewellery. We loved that stuff ...
Just recently I was searching for my old tunics but it seems I only kept one, relatively plain one ...
That was basically my everyday attire - one of these tunics, slim trousers with ripped knees and boots.
Later in the 90s, some girls started to wear hoop skirts and black veils - which I adopted later as well. I don't know if anyone still wears that style any more but - I'm getting nostalgic myself now :D
Really interesting to see what your experiences were in the 90s, and to compare that to how it was here in Germany.

I have a white one that I love. I was going to dye it but I really like the contrast when I wear a black bra, lace shirt, stockings, and leather jacket with it. I do want to find a shear black one or one that I could dye. I still prefer thrifting, diy-ing, and making things because nobody has that exact item then. It’s cool that there’s nice first hand items that look cool without any work, but they are often expensive and sometimes I can’t bring myself to spend the money when I’m used to buying clearance fabric and ‘fill a bag for $1’ thrifting. I feel the same way about things like after pay and any unnecessary payment plans and credit purchases. I have a fear of debt, so I just avoid it as much as possible.

I started dressing “goth”ish when I was about 13 (2002-3) and would wear some of my moms old lingerie from the 80s ha, except it was paired with strange jc penny pinstripe skirts etc because that’s what I had, and around that time I would steal from the Salvation Army (I know.. but I didn’t have any money, I was the poor) but the main styles I was looking for were like “90s club kid” a la “deee lite” etc, they were so easy to find back then, I was a bit ahead of my time with that one ha I wish I hadn’t gotten rid of all that stuff: ( so many silver and lime green mini dresses and fuzzy purses etc

I feel like with some good washing and the chemicals from dyes the stains would be well rendered harmless. Especially if you use a dye you have to do with boiling hot water.
I was never fond of slips as dresses in the 90's but that is more how they wore them in mainstream. Just the one and it was usually some kind of print. I am a sucker for black lace and silk though. Especially now. Might have to try my hand as a slip dress look.

I'm quite sure i remember my older sister asking my mom for a negligee or like a flouncy robe from the thrift storewhen we were much younger and she was so mad, and refused to buy it for her lmao. Also my senior prom dress (which was from hot topic in 2012 lol) was definitely based off of these kinds of lingerie dress looks. Its a long see thru skull lace slip dress, that had a plain black shorter slip for underneath. I think my dates parents probably wanted to splash some holy water at me lmao. My juinor prom dress was an actual 90s slip dress that i fully re vamped, re made the neck line, added trim and tailored all before i had a sewing machine, i was so freaking proud. I really wish i had held onto that one.
