especially nowadays you can find all kinds of clothing on line for dirt cheap. i was alternative back in the early 80's and there was no choice i HAD to go DIY there was no alternative clothing available retail and whatever you could find was crazy expensive. all that has changed it's easier than ever to dress alternative these days. everything i have was all cheap stuff i found online that i then accessorized NONE of it was name brand anything.
DEMONIA and DOC MARTEN make some nice stuff but it's way overpriced you can easily find stuff just as good that is nowhere near as expensive. i can actually afford name brand stuff but i refuse to pay for it just on general principal. plus i value it alot more when i find good stuff for cheap. i'm weird that way but except in a tiny few circumstances i say avoid name brands.

I've been a goth for almost a decade now (I'm 25) and I've only ever thrifted and DIYed my clothing, or supported bands by buying T-shirts at concerts. I only once in a while buy a few more expensive items that I save up for like boots that are hard to find at thrift stores. I never got into the expensive Killstar type online stores, looks too polished and edgy images are overused.
The 80s and 90s goths definitely didn't find a majority of their clothes out shopping in the mainstream before the internet was a thing, they had to be creative. It's sad that a lot of modern goths have forgotten that, but there's still plenty of us who do DIY and thrifting! In my opinion, a lot of "modern goths" aren't actually goth anyway because they only do it for fashion and know nothing about the music.
