  • We've been working on a HUGE project and today we are sharing it with you. We installed a double deer fence (2 parallel fences) 6 feet apart around our 1 acre orchard which will also house our chickens. A huge chicken moat around our orchard. Cool, huh?

Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

Good job. However one thing i'd have done is have the gates (the walk in gates) the width of your run, and open in opposite sides, so you can open them up and they block the run leaving a walk through area for you, and you don't have to worry about closing each gate behind you ... until you're done with whatever you need to do in the orchard.

So 2x 6 foot gates, making the opening 12 feet when gates are open, but it blocks the chicken run. Can change dimensions to accommodate a vehicle passing through.

Mother Earth News had an article about a chicken 🐓 run around someone's garden. It was 6-8' high, had a compost pile on the inside with chicken access and a culvert under the gate for a chicken tunnel. The garden had fruit trees and blackberries in it. Great idea and another great video from you 😊.

I built a chicken moat WAYYY back in the day-around my garden , and it worked beautifully. ( I was inspired by the original article 😉). Now I put a top on mine and the chickens were totally kept safe from predators. It was 40 x 60 feet on the inside and then the second fence was 4 feet from that. I Never had to spray my garden for pests, as even though the chickens were not inside with the plants, the vast majority of of pests didn’t make it across the moat. No deer or rabbits Lots of eggs and the most I had was about 70 chickens. I had to leave it behind back in 2004 but you are inspiring me to explore this again as I retire 😀

I will be in the corner farthest from the gate and there will be an emergency on the outside 10 feet away from me, but I'll have to go all the way through then around the entire fenced area to get to it.

I am 82 year old widow and obviously am done farming :) but I learned so much with these new fences and fitting parts. It used to be HE## to put up fences! Plus...looks great! I agree with your decision to do your own fence instead of having it done! Farming is your business and the more money you can keep through do-it-yourself the more successful you are. (There'll be enough emergencies you have no control over that will cost you.) It is also wise to consider which tools to buy, which to rent. My first thought was to rent the post driver, but when I heard the price I too would have purchased it. You will need it enough in years to come! The double fence is interesting and it should work. You may get a few young ones in there at the beginning but they won't look for food! They will want to get out and won't do it again! Deer are smart. When we figured out their highway through our 20 acres from the forest to the open plains we learned to keep that grassy and open. They never lingered or veered off and we had twice daily the herd going through.....as the farmer's friends and a great side-show. We felt we owed that to them because we also hunted our share for meat. Thank you, I love your always interesting videos.. You are heaven-send in these times of constant tribulations.

I'm so glad you made this fencing video. I'm adding Emus to our chicken hatchery and the initial cost was stupid high. Using your methods I will save about 25 grand just in fencing.

Sara makes me feel lazy, she is such a help. She reminds of my mom and dad they always worked together well. When my husband was living it was hard working together but we loved each other I think if we had to do such hard work we would not talk to each other most of the time😂

You guys are amazing! The freeze dryer, the weed fabric and now this. This is the 3rd idea I am getting from you guys. I already have enough extra stakes and fencing to pull this off. When this is done I am going to have to start going through all your old videos to see what I have missed! :) Keep up the great work.

That fencing system is exactly what I have been telling people for the last two years! I tested this the first time back in 2019. Mine was simply two rows of bamboo stakes and garden twine around my 25’ row of peas. It was the ONLY thing the deer didn’t eat in my garden!!

The fence looks amazing! Cant wait to see what all ya'll plant in your new orchard. Your such an inspiration to what you can do if you put your mind to it. I have listened to your last video several times when I'm trying to establish my first garden by hand as well as juggle 4 kids from 9 years old to 2 months. It can seem pretty overwhelming. It helps so much to have people who I know have accomplished so much to be so encouraging. Thank You! I'm looking forward to Wednesdays video.

Won't hawks be able to fly in, perch on the fence, then easily kill & devour a chicken? I've got 2 huge hawks that do that daily behind my home to catch frogs between the 6ft. wood stockade fence & the chain link fence that surrounds the drainage pond. These two fences are 5-6 feet apart. Hope it doesn't happen to you & be upsetting to discover. Just wanted to share. This method absolutely works on deer crossing!!!!👍

Putting up new fence no more poles and concrete they move all over the place because of the frost and high water table . thanks guys this is why I SUBSCRIBED

I used that system on my old farm. And then added a guardian dog that patrolled the 'moat'. Mine was for deer AND Coyotes, so that is why the addition of the dog. You should see great success with this. Also, you are not alone in how that vortex pushed things around. I had birds to process, several crops to get in the beds, potatoes to plant, and the rotation of the grazing animals(not to mention the hit of frostbite on chicken combs and even a calf). God has us in hand and sometimes we just need to take a breath and trust in that.
