    Great job! If you put up a remote camera on the moat, we'd watch your chickens doing chicken things all day long! You could call it The Chicken Feed!! 😁

      Very relaxing and very comical at times

      Chickens are the aquariums of the farm or urban backyard. I have no idea WHY I enjoy watching them zoom around the yard but I do (I have backyard chickens). I totally get the idea of the Chicken Feed.

    I would put a little children's pool or something of that nature in the moat area for the ducks to swim in. I am glad you took the advice of others and are putting up the trellises. Looking good.

      I was a little concerned over the ducks as well. They seemed outnumbered by not to friendly hungry chickens. If it ends up being a problem then this is the duo who will come up with the answer!

      I use concrete mixing tubs for my ducks. they are fairly cheap, deep enough for the ducks, and the chickens can drink from them if they choose.

      I would buy 1or2 kids baby plastic pools and dig a spot in the ground so they can walk right into the water in the pool.

    Geese in with chickens is an added layer of protection for them.
    The geese are great for spotting aerial predators and warning others so they have time to run to shelter.

      Singular goose, apparently. More than one and they're distracted w each other.

    • @tomandtinadixon
      @tomandtinadixon 3 года назад +4

      @@suzieclary3328 actually no, not true entirely. We have a mated pair as our guards, and they do perfectly well at doing their job. We even had 2 others last year in the mix and still no problems with them ignoring the hawks and crows. They still sound an alarm or show a sign that the chickens pick up on to alert them. The chickens themselves are pretty good too at spotting things, I have watched them.

      Sarah and Kevin had geese in the past and didn't like them. They starred in a video of "animals we never want to own again" LOL

    • @tomandtinadixon
      @tomandtinadixon 3 года назад +2

      @@melindabruce2152 LOL I saw that one and it's funny! But they did kinda do a couple things the wrong way. Those goslings needed to be WITH the chickens, not in their own brooder and being "mommied" by Kevin LOL (that is cute though!). They imprinted on him and wanted nothing to do with being geese. I think it was a bit the same with the cats, getting kittens of course they tend to need some attention so will also imprint on people that give it to them. If they had gotten one or two about a year old that were used to being a farm cat, it would be a different story. We have a bunch outside that are all of the same family and are the mushiest things alive and get underfoot, but they do their job and we don't have any rodent problems except in the garden where I had electric line around so they didn't cover that last year. I'm hoping this year to get them to hop over that bottom line to hunt gophers!

      A female goose raised with some chicks works best as a guardian goose. She will consider the chickens to be her family. But this time don't let the goosling imprint onto people.

      Southern Missouri is one of the best places to grow grapes. We'd go down every fall when they were in season and bring a bunch home to steam juice. It was fun to try different mixes of grapes and flavors of the juices. We just didn't grow enough concords at our place. There are lots of little mom & pop sellers. We just made juice for our family but check out St James winery if you go.

You guys are very industrious people, I admire your great efforts, your dedications, your confidence in achieving and living your dreams to own a homestead. Having a homestead is never easy. Maybe some herbs/garlic on the orchard side of the fence - not near the trellis - that are reachable through the fence by the chickens as the herbs grow, that are natural parasite food chickens can peck on as and when they require it. Perhaps some currant bushes too. Spread the harvest love! 😀

    I've watched so many homesteaders do that routine of carrying seedlings in and out of the greenhouse during the transition of seasons. Seems a shame to have to still spend so much time doing that menial task during an extremely busy time of year. If I were building a greenhouse I would do separate covers for the top and sides. Install a rod along the bottom of the top cover, jigger a rope and pulley system (like a window roller shade) and roll that sucker up at least halfway to the peak. This would also make it quick and easy to drop the cover in a flash if a storm rolls through.

    Good morning! We are thinking about doing the same thing with our chickens not around our garden you guys inspired us to do this idea! And we also built a chicken coop out of pallets! I’m gonna build a smaller version of the big one for scoop around the garden! We made a video on the coop on our channel and will be doing the fencing soon!

    Greetings from South Africa 🇿🇦
    Just thinking out loud here, would the deers not be able to eat whatever you are planting on these trellises... If there is a possibility of it, Kevin this would be a great spot for you to hunt during deer season

    The trellis idea is great! Would they work for sweet potatoes possibly as well as the squash and cucumbers? Bless ya all!

    • @ronaldcummings6337
      @ronaldcummings6337 3 года назад +2

      Sweet potatoes add more roots wherever the vines make soil contact and more tubers, so I don't think trellising them would be advantageous.

    What a great addition to the chicken moat. There’s so many things that you could grow over that fencing. Somebody said maybe grapes. But it could be just about anything, green beans anything that grows on a vine. It’ll be fun to watch what’s your next move.

    When you mentioned predators from the air, I remembered an incident where a Chicken Hawk flew onto my Mothers patio, caught a cardinal at the birdfeeder. Then just sat there on top of one of the lawn chairs with the bird in its clutch. My Mom quickly ran to the door with a broom to get the Chicken Hawk to release the songbird, but it was to late the cardinal was dead. In short, Chicken Hawks are real bold hunters and not afraid of humans, when it comes to the hunt.

      I have bald eagles and merlins and a tiny little one called a kestrel I just ran fishing line over my coop yard (no free range here too many predators ) it works well.
      But I have rabbits and ground hogs all over due to my wood pile being a safe haven. The bald eagle seems only interested in the rabbits and ground hog.

    You can tell the ducks don't like the chickens, stayed away in coop, then when feeding time came, they held back, one went in, told other 2 quick get in here at the end, they are a little and then said "ok that's good, let's get away from them" lol
