  • This video shows how I make my arrows that I sell to customers. There are many way to build arrow, this is how I have found the most success. I have taken over 20 big game animals with these. If you are looking for finished cane arrows, look me up at www.gillsprimitivearchery.com sorry, I DO NOT sell arrow making SUPPLIES.

    Very nice project and well executed!
    A few things I 'd like too add:
    When im making my bambo arrows for target schooting, I also weigh them and test them for balance. It adds to consistency to have all your arrows with the same weight. If they come out too light I put airgun bbs into the shaft. Also I like insert Tips better, because you can put a wrapping on the outside to prevent the arrows from splintering if you hit a rock.

      I finished my first set and I have to say it was damn satisfying. First four turned out ugly, with uneven cuts and glue on feathers but as I fought the frustration and forced myself to concentrate, they started to come out quite nice. No sinew wraps though, as it's apparently very hard to obtain in my country, but linen thread with wood glue seems to do the job.

I know that ppl have been making arrows primitively ever since they first started making bows but the process is just amazing. Have you ever used unwaxed dental floss with glue to substitute for the sinew? I would think that dental floss would be great since it's strong as hell and much cheaper than any material sold by specialty shops for primitive arrow making.

    What a great vid, bought some of these shoots years back and never really understood the best way to utilize them so most have gone to staking up veggies 😕 which I regret now after seeing this, you do make it look easy, you e done this before huh😄 anyway only question I have would be I don't have a spine tester so could you give me an idea on the dia. Of a shaft to be if a guy was looking for a spine of 50lbs. Realizing of course there will be differences in stiffness, Or will you cover this in your more primitive vid on making these, sorry for being long winded

    • @huntprimitive9918
      @huntprimitive9918  7 лет назад +3

      no prob, but the diameter wont mean a single thing. That vary so greatly it wont even get you in the ball park. Without a spine tester, just make some up that are noticeably different spines to the touch. then whichever flies the best, start modeling you arrows to that relative stiffness... be warned though, you'll make a pile of arrows before you get a truly good flying set. Another trick I have used was to intentionally overspine my arrows so they all essentially fly without much paradox. You can actually be successful at this but you have to train your body to automatically hold further right in order for the heavy spined shafts to hit center. I killed a lot of primitive deer with this method. people will say you can't, but I have proven otherwise!

    • @yamahabiker1937
      @yamahabiker1937 4 года назад

      It depends on the type of bow you have (bone backed, sinew backed, etc.... as they will typically have more draw capability) or your draw length. But, usually you keep the length of the arrow for a self backed bow at least or less than 50% of the bow length. Trying a 30" draw on a self backed 50" bow ( for example ) can cause a catastrophic failure.

    • @huntprimitive9918
      @huntprimitive9918  7 лет назад +1

      My arrows are 30 inches to the base of the point. The weight varies, mostly because the heavier spined arrows usually are more dense and also weight more physically. 450-500 is a good weight for hunting. I usually like my deer hunting arrows to fall between 525-550 grains

    I've built arrows with bamboo plant stakes. But I have a hard time not getting spines in the 70+ range, without the shafts being needle thin. Does river cane spine lighter for the diameter vs. plant stake bamboo?

    • @huntprimitive9918
      @huntprimitive9918  7 лет назад

      It all depends on the area in which they grow. I have cut cane thin yet heavy spined, and likewise I have cut thick stuff that is really like. Soil content and available water make a difference, as well as likely different genetic strands. Thin arrows are definitely not a bad thing providing they do spine sufficiently

      some of them do have much larger nodes. Different patches often have slightly different characteristics. Check around for some more in another area. However, that large node cane can still work also. I have used quite a bit of it. Straighten it out really well and then grind those big nodes down.
