  • Bamboo and river cane make some of the most durable and accurate natural arrow shafts out there. Additionally, the hollow material can provide surprisingly high spine range in a pretty small diameter and light weight shaft. What this means is that bamboo and cane are the perfect arrow shaft material for extreme FOC arrows (EFOC). This video will show you how to make EFOC primitive bamboo and cane arrows.
    In this video I mention another video on tuning your bow and arrow. To get the best performance possible, watch that video and follow some of the tips there to match your arrows to any longbow, recurve, or selfbow.

    I see this isn't a new video but you brough back a memories of my youth which I appreciate. You and I do almost the same thing when building arrows. I used Switch Cane for shafts and a 160 grain broad heads with a three to one ratio like yours. One of my favorite heads were the Modoc heads. A lot of people put the Modoc heads down due to the point bending. If the point is lined up with the dynamic center of the shaft it won't bend.I have taken lots of game Squirels. rabbits, deer and hogs and the only goose I ever shot at with 3 to 1 ratio blades.
    I shot off the first joint of my fingers this allowed me to shoot a little lesser spined arrow than archers with a deep hook due to a extremely clean realease more so than a deep hook release. In my day, years past a lot of people thought I was a good shooter? I never thought so although I have many trophies from my tournament days. I am in my eighties now and only have memories. I hope people will follow your way of making arrows. I am courious as to the type of cane you use? I watched some Japanese archers when I went to Japan and their cane was different than mine. Ithink if my memory hasn't failed me it was called Madaki bamboo? Thank you for a well made video. We didn't have computers only a few books on archery.

      Hi, I would like to know how to align point with the dynamic center of the shaft. Can you please explain it.

    • @mattedwards4533
      @mattedwards4533 8 месяцев назад

      @@sujitgurav7465 What I did was I used a board any size but about three feet is long enough. Take four nails any size and nail two of them at an angle opposite one another forming a vee. take the other two and do the same thing about one and a half feet apart at the other end of the board your arrow will rest in the two vees. make sure the shaft is straight. Now roll your arrow with your point on but not glued. Watch the tip of your point if it warbles ajust it until the tip of your point stays in one place when you turn it. be careful while turning the arrow. if you bend the shaft the least bit you will be off. Now you can glue your point on and check it by putting it on the board again to verify that you have it straight with the dynamic center of the shaft. I also make a mark directly under the point on the board for future arrows I may make. This should get you as straight as possible. If you are using cane shafts use the spin method it is a bit slower but cane isn't as smooth as wood arrows and might give a false reading using the above method.
      I used the word,"dynamic center" but meant "Physical center". I had a long bow design in my mind.

    • @sujitgurav7465
      @sujitgurav7465 8 месяцев назад

      Thank you very much. I will try this method on my next set of arrows. I now learnt that the shaft needs to be perfectly straight before fixing point in it. I will also try this method on my old arrows as well. Until now I used to spin arrows on my palm, which I think is not very perfect method. Thanks again for the help.

      @@sujitgurav7465Spining the arrow works but take a bit more time. I never quit trying to perfect my archery skills . I found out that the more I learned the more I found there was to know? You showed me a few things I wish I had known back then.
      I made my spine tester I didn't have a chart to go by I just got an arrow that shot well and marked where the pointer was and made my arrows fit the mark. How crude it was but it worked. One thing you said that was spot on is something that seems minor and insignnificant can have an effect on how accurate you can shoot. People should take that to heart if they want to excell at archery. A tweak here and there will improve an archers accuracy. I found it ironic that to shoot well you need a fine tuned bow. The problem is a person that is trying to learn can't tune a bow easy. He is working in the dark? Once a bow is tuned to the archer things progress rapidly. I can't tell you how many times I have seen people try to spend their way to sucess and fail miserably.
      A problem that haunted me a long time was I used more bow than I needed. A good example was when I flew out to Texas to hunt Hogs in the hill country. The only take down bow I had was a Jim Brackenbury."Drifter" recurve 55#draw weight. I had never taken a hog before and worried that I may be under bowed? It was the only bow I had that I could carry on the plane. Was I wrong! I shot a hog at 17steps And I saw the yellow fletching disappear in its side. I had double lunged the hog and must have severed some main vessels as he bled profusely. Needless to say he didn;t go far.
      I know I get carried away with my postings, sorry!

    • @sujitgurav7465
      @sujitgurav7465 8 месяцев назад

      Yes, well tuned bow is a must and archer won't have enough knowledge about tuning a bow. Well tuned arrows may work with one bow but they won't work very well with different bows. Thanks for sharing your experience.

    Does it matter on what side of the shaft you put the odd/cock feather?
    Because when I bend my bamboo, one side bends more then the other... As in the other side is more stiff.

    I just got a dozen each of bamboo and douglas fir shafts. This will be my first attempt at wooden arrows. I was going to use plastic nocks but maybe I'll try some of these self nocks. I picked up several valuable tips here thank you! The bamboo arrows should be especially good for small game hunting but I'm curious to see how the two wood types compare in strength. Also, I copied your design for a sanding jig because my pencil sharpener style would not work on bamboo. Works great! Thank you!

    You can build a bow with a $20 draw knife and a $15 Rasp, and a couple pieces of cheap sandpaper, but if you want to build arrows?! That’s when you really start spending the money. Feather burners, fletching jigs, tapering tools, disk sanders, the list goes on. Funny how that works! Great videos man I’ve really been enjoying everything and I just got my copy of the bowyers handbook from you. Can’t wait to build my first bow! When are you going to teach a class around Texas sometime?

    Actually since I plan on making arrows and selling them with my Flatbows at a local Saw Mill of all things I am concerned about consistency.
    I had not priced the spine measuring tool, but I do want something similar so that quality goes with the product.
    I am thinking that creating a tool that supports an arrow at two points 28 inches apart with a 880 gram weight deflecting the shaft and a indicator set up so that it magnifies the actual deflection may not be terribly hard.
    Even if you fail to coincide with the the 350 that corresponds with 350 thousands of an inch deflection as long as your scale remains constant you can still maintain consistency is my general thought.

There's no perpendicular in a round arrow shaft made from a wooden plant stem as far as I know. Now there may be basically one orientation of wood grain in a wooden dowel cut from a larger piece of branch or log. Perhaps that's the kind of arrow shaft you're talking about.

      I think you'd need to sand down that base (the one half of the seam) first for the thinnest and flattest surface possible before gluing

    • @Daylon91
      @Daylon91 3 года назад

      That is how you do it though. You can cut one end then literally peel the spine away or whatever then glue but when you glue use string to make sure it glues well and evenly.

    Traditional made with nothing but modern tools, cool. I like to make em as modern as I can to match my carbon matched limbs on my Trad bow; that I never have to worry about its performance. I.always loved to see the self bow folks as they drive up in their $80,000 4x4 s. Clay is one of the few good self bow bowyers out there. I just think not using modern Trad gear is a loss for the hunter.

      Why would you care? Why dont you just use a crossbow, or a compound since they out perform trad bows in nearly every way? Not that I care, I hunt using my self bow and wooden arrows I make using only my teeth and a few sharpened bone scraps

      @@troy9327 no need to wad your panties there little fella. It's all good as everyone can do what ever level of replication and impersonation of archery they want. My point is that there are actual period bowyers who make at period equipment and that is respectable. My point to use modern materials in a trad bow provides me the simplicity and dependability of modern materials with the attributes of what positives trad archery brings to the table. I spent a year in South Korea studying their bow building and found a historical bias in bow building, I also grow Osage and Black locust for staves for friends on my small ranch. We all laugh at our selves when we make traditional bows smoking modern cigars flown in from Cuba. Go fling some arrows.

You were the one who had a problem with Clay using modern tools. I think its strange that you make fun of people using modern tools to make traditional gear, while you have no problem using modern materials to make traditional gear. Fun fact, I bushcrafted this phone im watching youtube on from nothing more than Sinew, a shed antler, and a lttle elbow grease.

      @@troy9327 I like your simple sense of humor and youthful niave sarcasm, but you obviously are reading more in to My opinion than logical context should have been interpreted. Trad is a big umbrella and I stand by what I said about self bows in that the juice ain't worth the squeeze in general but modern Trad is broadly more useful, unlike your feelings that got hurt because of my opinion. Self bows are a novelty not unlike bamboo fly rods, if you actually use them enough in real outdoor pursuits, advancing to modern technologies and materials is the most common path. On your elk panties, did you brain tan it or use modern formulas?
