Rough Country Budget Lift Install on a Grand Cherokee

- This is a quick video showing the install of my 2 inch budget lift and 1.5 inch wheel spacer install on my 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee. My camera died a couple of times during filming this, but you get to see 90% of the install. A spring compressor and air tools would have made this job MUCH simpler. If I had to do it over, I would have picked up new shocks and struts to install at the same time, as well as grabbed a spring compressor. Let me know your thoughts or comments! This same lift also fits and installs the same on a Jeep Commander.
Can now appreciate how much easier to do a lift on a Wrangler. Let me suggest a couple of points for those who will be doing this lift. Undo your stabilizer link. That will help to lower the suspension further. Undo brake line bracket which mounts the line to the frame. That will prevent you from puling on the brake line during installation and potentially damaging it. Same goes for abs lines if you have any.
I suggest disconnecting the sway bar with the Jeep still on the ground, and life would be much easier. Jack it up another 4 inches, this allows the lower arm to go further down and the strut assembly goes right in. Not being a smart ass, just trying to help the next one installing. Great video, very helpful.
How are the wheel spacers treating you man ? I’m considering putting some on
I'm about to add a 3" spacer level to my 2005 jeep grand cherokee it looks similar to this do I need longer sway bar or is the orginal going to work
So with the lift should do you have to put spacers on it.
Nice video, A friend was think of doing this, how long do you think this install took you to do?
Off and on, about a weekend job. The rear was easy, the front was a pain. Go for it, he'll love it!
how long did it take to do?
That poor brake line @ 4:50. Again @ 5:10.
Yeah, not my finest moment in automotive work!
great video! pretty hilarious watching you install it upside-down lol springs are a huge pain in the ass! I just did this on a silverado and I used a strut compressor. it helped quite a bit if you ever have to do this again I suggest it highly.
Ouch....safety googles guy when grinding, I've been there! Great vid!
While you are dropping the rear Panhard rod, you really should lengthen it or the rear axle sits off to one side.
Would have been nice if you showed a picture of how the Jeep sat after you were done instead of driving it up on a ramp
I have the same car I just bought 255/75 17 u think that 2" would clear the front end
Renee Campos yes
I had to get spring compressors as my new struts with space was way to tall to get in
As a black guy I enjoyed this music and video
What size tyres, great video and speeded up gives me pointers to make sure I get all the bolts to replace my shocks.
I used the same tires that come on JK Rubicons - BFG 255/75R17. Look on cragislist, people are always selling them after putting a lift kit on their wranglers.
every thing is all right with this tirea no closin on full turns and holes+turns forward and backward???
You skipped the hardest part IMO - getting the clevis fork bolt out and pulling the strut out. Looks like yours came right out clean. I got stuck with that bottom bolt fully rusted in the bushing, not budging at all.
PB Baster and brake cleaner worked for me. Spray it around the bushing area hit it with an impact wrench, 21mm. Pound it with hammer. Repeat the next day until it will move. It took about 3 days for it to free up. Once it's really loose you are almost home free but the threaded end might not want to pass through the bushing you may have to cut the head off the bolt and drive it out from the front.
Cao Marko. Hvala ako odgovoris. I ja sam stavio lift kit ali imam neki problem sa prednjim trapom pa me zanima da li se kod ovih podizanja radi prrpravlja nesto dodatno na trapu stbilizatori optika itd. Hvala
@@sasasternja Cao Sasa, izvini sad tek videh pitanje. Ali kako bilo, ono cega se secam je da sto blize dodjes do ili preko 4 inch worth of lift, you start putting more and more strain on other parts like drive shaft etc. Zato obicno 6" lift requires more work than 3.5 - 4" lift. Ne znam koliko ti bilo sta od ovog pomaze, ali sve najbolje - pozdrav!
These are 255 75R17 (the same tire that comes on the Wrangle Rubicons). I wouldn't go much bigger due to rubbing.
They are the stock tires that come on a Rubicon - they are 255's.
Take the bottom of your strut out first before unbolting it up top while removing it. Unbolt the top last. When you go to reinstall it put the top in first and start your nuts and have someone stand on the hub assembly while you maneuver the bottom back in place. The same can be done installing new lift coil or reduce rate coil springs. I know alot of tricks to save time.
Spot on, great advice😎
That was a struggle to watch!
I know this is a old video but I hope I can get some answers. So I bought the same wheel spacers and my rear left side was sticking out more then the rest were flush with the fenders. Any clue why? The mechanic trying to tell me the chassis is bent but I drove behind my jeep and it drives straight as an arrow..
Hmmm, that is definitely odd. If they were all the same width, then all should be the same. You might just need an adjustment on your suspension. If it is the rear, check the bushing in the panhard bar to make sure it is not worn out, causing the axle to shift one direction. I hope this helps!
@@jbrunsonjr my sway bar in the rear was broken too. The mechanic said that it was hit but the records on the car show no frame damage and I drove behind the car and it drives straight.
If you disconnect your sway bar youll get a lot more articulation
😄ha ha ha 👊 your totally fighting it with out the spring compressor. It looks way better with lift though.
Hey nice tires what kind of tires are they. I want that for my Laredo.
They were BFGs off of a Rubicon JK. I think 245s or 255s….
Do you have any issues with cv axles in front
They wore about the same as factory. I replaced them once with cheap aftermarket, trying to be proactive and the passenger side would pop out. Went back to factory and never had the issue again. I never should have touched them in the first place. I drove for about 140k miles with the lift on.
Jack that was so damn funny watching you get that front right back together. I'm glad you didn't edit that out.
Yeah, I hate car shows because they edit out the true pains of working on a car. SOOO glad I don't have to do it again anytime soon. Thank you for watching and please subscribe as I will be posting up more jeep stuff soon!
great videos, very helpful, im installing my leveling kit right now I didn't have any problems installing the rear blocks, the passenger side it's been a little stress full
I put one of these kits on a buddy of mine jeep what a pain in the back side. At least it wasn't me.🤣🤣 Great job.
It's just a 2" lift from Rough Country and then added on their 1.5" wheel spacers for a wider stance look.
Same tire as on a factory Rubicon - I think it is 255 75R17...
Jack, great video, thank you. I'm going to install same on a 2008. It's difficult to see your jack and stand locations on the rear. I attempted to remove one side at a time and couldn't get the axel low enough to remove the spring. Do you have to disconnect and lower entire axel (both sides at once) to get the springs out? Thanks, Doug
Is this a 2" lift kit? Because I am looking through Rough Country catalogs and only finding the 1.5" kit
Do you have to get an alignment after the 2 inch lift?
So many people have asked who sings the songs but you refuse to give a name. So, who, specifically, sings the songs. Give us his name or band name so we can look him up on Itunes or Amazon.com please.
hahahahahah you like to go on your back to get the whole strut in hahahahah cheers
Hello, I'm French and i don't speak english very well, sorry. So I've 2" on my wh and i would like to know what size it's possible to install on my jeep (255/75/17 or 245/75/17) ?
And what size for spacer ? 10 MM/20 MM OR 30 MM.
Thanks a lot
Chris
Not a lot of help being in fast forward, not telling us what your doing, and no close ups. A before and after pic would go a long way dude. Nice Jeep though.
Great job brother, No air tools all by wrench
When doing this buy a set of roll bar drop links, they are cheap and getting the old ones off usually destroys them anyway😎
Good idea - thanks!
Good question, I still ask that question to this day. I need to replace my front struts, and if I do, I am going to try the spring compressors. Besides that, everything that you saw you will most definitely have to do in order to get them out and back in. It's not that hard, just time consuming is all. I say go for it!
Word to self.. Never buy a jeep with struts, What a pain in the ass.
I couldn't agree more! I definitely like working on my CJ7 more!
What size tires?
Did the lift changed the camber on the front??
What size tires u running?
It was my buddy Kevin's band, but they broke up before they could ever get picked up by a label, so no luck in buying the song. You can check them out on MySpace - they are called Blue Remedy.
Hey Jack, i talked to a mechanic he said i need to replaced the existing rear shock because it will be too short. Is that true?
I rode for a while without doing it, and since I don’t off-road much, it was fine. I did replace my shocks down the road with longer load leveling shocks from Monroe - I have a video on that as well. I hope this helps!!
I have since put the exact same kit on my 05 Grand Cherokee so I have a couple of questions. 1 have you had any problems with your upper ball joint and 2 what size tire did you put on
No ball joint issues and I put on 255 75R17's on with wheel spacers. Thank you for watching!
What’s the song called?
That looks great!
Pretty well - I didn't offroad it too much, so not sure about droop. I ended up putting on some coilover shocks on the rear (check out my other video) later on to help level the ride height.
Did you have to use extended brake lines? Or add longer shocks later on?
Thanks
No need
you should make a video of the strut replacement..... many thx from america. hows the weather in canada??
Nice video..shows alot...
Thank you! I really appreciate you watching!
@ckdafinest cold as usual... at least where I am.. dunno about video op. =)
Looked kind of goofy, but I had to drive it that way for a couple weeks until I could go to the tire store...
Just had this installed on commander rough country recommends 265/70r/17 tires will this rub ? I don't want to install wheel spacers. Right now I stock 245/65r/17
Not sure on the commanders, but I believe the Grand Cherokee was 255 with some hammering of the wheel well.
Hey so I ended up putting cooper discoverer at3 265/70/17 with 1.5 spider trac wheel spacers looks awesome rides nice very slight rub at full lock on plastic
awesome video, im doing this to my jeep commander in a couple months
Awesome! Thank you for watching! Please subscribe as I will be posting up more videos soon!
Nice job on the vid - So your buddy that sings the songs...there really good -website/facebook page? and more importantly how did the WK handle on the road after the lift? and how did she perform off-road, if you got a chance to take her off-road.
HERE is a tip from a certified mechanic from a dealer.use a little Anti-Seize Compound in new spacer so when the spring start to set in they dont sqeek and the spacer on the struts as well just a lil advice.. thanks
Hi I'm Oscar I have a jeep grand cherokee 2005, censilla and put some spaces From 3'' but my tires are wearing me, I recommend him? To straighten my tires. Tnx
I did a 2"budget lift from Fat Bob's Garage that came with shocks and spacers,I ordered a set of spring compressor's from Summit that same day cause I already knew that it would of been a royal pain in the ass to do it without them, only 40 bucks.
looking back on the install, would you think using a spring compressor would have made any difference? I was thinking of trying to get away without having to undo any linkagaes or ball joints when i get around to installing one of these?
how long did this take you, and how much experience did you have when installing it?
I want to install this same kit to my car, but questioning if I should get it professionally Installed. Any thoughts? thanks.
The Rough Country lift just comes with the 2" strut tower spacers and blocks to level the rear. The 1.5" is for the wheel spacers which you are going to need in order to install a larger tire.
Nice video
what all did you buy/install? Is it just a 2 in. or is there a 1.5 as well. how do you get the extra 1.5? thanks
lol,funny u using ur foot.
great vid...
Shoo, I need to replace my front struts and am NOT looking forward to struggling with it again! :)
what size tires did you put in after the lift was on? I just put the same lift on and trying to figure out a good size to put on
I do the same last week, but i have some issue with front wheels something like diffrent angle... did you do something with sway arm stabilizers? Thank you mate.
Did you have to do the pinch weld mod with the 255/75 tires? Any rubbing?
Yeah. I just ended up cutting the fender liner with tin snips and then whacked at the pinch weld with a five pound sledge. All fixed!
Jack Brunson Jr. Dumbass next time slow the video down idiot
cool video. thinking on doing this to my 06 ford explorer, truxx lift, 1.5" spacers and 275/75/16 tires on stock rims.
What website did you buy the kit on? And whats the difference between a lift and leveling kit? Jeep looks great!!
Song?
Sir ,
from where can i get these coil spacers ? can this be applied also to Cherokee 1989?
thanks ,'
Apologies I missed your comment. Hi is brilliant, honest music. Does he have a CD/download available?
Nice job menn. Hey how can i get the kit ? And , can i use the same rims but put a biger rubber on it? Thanks..
is this easy to do?? im mechanically inclined but i have never ventured into these murky waters :)
Work smarter not harder. Few things i seen that could have saved you some time and alot of effort. Sway bar for 1, lifting it up a lil higher, etc. But great work with no air tools and by urself.
Spring compressor tool from any auto shop would have made that easier....
Loved the vid, thanks. Please please could you tell me who the artist is on the music tracks?
Not initially, but I did end up going and having it done.
Hi I love your video so helpful I wobder did you put whell spacers on the back as well??
After the install, when you have a front tire off the ground does your outer cv boot touch the lower control arm? I am having this problem after installing this lift with GABRIEL G57083 (Original Ride Quality) Ultra ReadyMount struts.
may be a bit late on thos question and could be in the comments. i did this a month ago on my wk with the crown rt offroad pucks same as the rough country just different brand now knowing its mainly a body lift did you replace with similar sozed shocks as factory or did you get a taller more travel shock?
dude awesome video and awesome WK. I have an 05WK and im going to add this same lift!
I am absolutely amazed at what people do with limited hand tools! I used an air compressor, Harbor Freight Earthquake XT air wrench, a set of Gearz box wrenches, 1/2 inch socket wrench with a full contingent of sockets, a massive breaker-bar and spring compressors and it was still a bear to do! And yes...that bolt for that strut stirrup was not cooperative at all. I doused it in lots of rust dissolve and let it sit over night, then more while I was working on it. But I was able to get the Old Man Emu installed!
Do you still have this car? If so how has this lift held up for you? I put the same rough country lift on my WK and the welds on the front spacers popped. Very sketchy
Has no one heard of spring compressors
The trouble wasn't really the springs as it was the bushings not giving enough to slide the strut past. Even with a spring compressor, you still need to compress the strut, which could be equally as difficult with this installation (by yourself). Great thought though - I welcome all ideas on how to do things easier!
Hello , I need a huge favor, what sockets sizes did you had used for this job?? I am looking to do mines tomorrow
What music is that ? That is awesome tunes !
MY buddies band from back in the day. They never could get signed. :(
@@jbrunsonjr that's a shame, that's awesome music ! Good video by the way, I enjoyed it !
Put some solid front and rear suspension on your jeep so you can really flex.
Sorry a question buy a few increases for my cherokee 2005 of 3 inches is not very hard my suspension are the same as those of the video
i am going to do the same to my limited that looks awesome what tire size is that?
I also have a 05' WK and I'm looking to do a budget lift with 2-inch blocks. What brand and size of tires did you use?
tire size pls great video
I used the same tires that come on JK Rubicons - BFG 255/75R17. Look on cragislist, people are always selling them after putting a lift kit on their wranglers.
did you not have to do some re-alignment after putting in the lift?
🤣🤣wow that is a diffrent way of doing it 🤣🤣🤣🤣👍
Great video and that music is awesome. Would like some more of it. Any on RUclips to see more of your friend’s band?
