- King County and the King County sheriff filed a legal complaint to determine the constitutionality of a recent amendment made to Burien's public camping ban.
Last week, the Burien City Council approved an amendment to its existing ordinance that would create more limitations for people experiencing homelessness in the city. The amendment, approved by a 5-2 vote, creates a 500-foot buffer zone around parks, libraries, schools, daycares, and senior centers and makes it illegal for the unhoused to sleep overnight in those areas.

Until the couple of years the KC Sheriff was an elected office. All Sheriffs should be elected officials. The Far-Leftist have been trying to change that for a few years.

The Downtown businesses should relocate the Burien Campers to the Burien 4th Precinct KC Sheriff Office at 14905 6th Ave SW.
Per the Sheriff, she won't move them. Give her the headaches that the Downtown businesses get.

Since there is NO lawful court order , the stupid sheriff MUST enforce the laws on the books. She does not make the laws only enforce them.
Time to end the contract with KCSO and provide your own police dept. Then you have say on what your officers can or can't do. Not some political stunt.

Most of you are not gonna like this, but I'm with the Sheriff on this one.
If there is reasonable doubt that a given ordinance is unconstitutional, then 'letting a judge decide' is the way to go. Not only is that the right thing to do, but it will save the taxpayers a lot of money in wrongful arrest lawsuits.
Most of these people don't want to be homeless but have been forced out of housing options due to the ruinous rents from Everett to Centralia, but especially in King County. So if you folks have a problem with homeless encampments, you might look towards the source of the problem.
Or just maybe camp somewhere that’s not in the public space there’s lots of places in Washington to not be directly on the sidewalk. It’s kind of disrespectful to the rest of the public.

1. Many of these people are still employed, but their wages won't support apartment rents - - especially if they have more than one child.
2. So banishing them to the boonies puts them off the bus routes so they can't get to work.
3. They pay taxes just like you do... They pay 10+% in sales taxes and 12% gas taxes [which is where most of the money in the General Fund comes from]. These public spaces are just as much their 'property' as it is yours.
Now none of that make homelessness any more attractive or less of a crime problem. I totally get that. But you're not blaming the right people for that problem. How about taking the landlords and property management companies to task for the glut of homeless in our state? Fun fact, and I just looked this up, the average rent for a 2 BR apartment in Burien is $1600 a month. So how is someone gonna afford that with two kids?
@@carlhicksjr8401 yes it’s their space to use as it intended just as it intended for me to use but it’s not intended for me to start barbecuing and sleeping on the sidewalk where people walk or in front of other businesses. Is there a reason why they couldn’t rent a room somewhere if they’re working a job ? There are lots of places with rooms to rent. I’m sure they could also find a place that was close to the bus routes, but it wasn’t directly in the Public view
I understand your sentiment. I think for the working homeless, we should focus our resources on helping them bridge the gap. However, I would argue the vast majority on the street are chronically homeless because of drug abuse and mental illnesses.
Unfortunately, federal courts have already ruled on this issue in other jurisdictions. That liberal appointed judge rules that they couldn't enforce that type of ordinance unless there was enough beds in local shelters for all the homeless people. In the city of Chico California that ordinance has been in place for decades, and a federal judge ruled when somebody sued that if there's no place for them to go because there's no room in the homeless inn but can't remove them even from very sensitive waterways.
