I used to work operating India's first white water jet boat in the rapids up stream from Rishikesh from 1993 to 1995. Some things still look the same around the bridges but most shops are zoomed up, bigger and well lit. Chota Wala was a great place to eat and probably still is today. I lived at Son Prya Ganga a private estate (only invited guests can get through the gate so do not try to go there) upstream from the Laxman bridge. Along the river we had numerous encounters with tigers, leopards and all sorts of interesting people walking to the 5 temples of Shiva way up in the mountains. South of Rishikesh just above the dam on the far side of the river from the Ganga Kanari Hotel, elephants come down to the river in the winter dry season and very colorful tiny ducks from Russia can be found in the quiet water. If you are familiar with being with wild elephants you could do as I used to and go talk to them. Once the biggest bull has made his false charge at you to show the girls just who is in charge and you do not go closer things settle down. I once saw a Japanese man sitting out in the open river bed playing his flute to the enjoyment of the elephants. Everything will happen if you are ready for the world to happen. It is India!
Part of me wants you to just live in Rishikesh until I can make it back there. These videos have been feeding my soul, you have no idea. Thanks so much.
indiatoday.intoday.in/story/maharishi-mahesh-yogi-rs-60000-crore-fortune/1/201925.html ounodesign.com/2009/07/02/whatever-happened-to-the-beatles-ashram-in-rishikesh/ Martin Says: August 3rd, 2009 at 4:07 am Hello, The ashram was abandoned in 1984 because the supreme court of India turned the whole place into a national park called the Shahaji National park. The Maharishi did not own this place and had it on lease. Once the ruling was passed, there was little the Maharishi could do but abandon the land. Just weeks before the place had to be abandoned, the local forest authorities told the ashram workers that they could take with them all that they could before the deadline and because of this there are no switchboards, taps, furniture and metal parts left in the ashram. Everything was ransacked and sold off in the local market. The meditation halls were aircondtioned… In the 1960’s n that too in an Indian forest! There was a helipad, a post office and a bank inside the ashram. All this made the place pretty remarkable. A lot of private companies are interested in acquiring this property and turning it into a meditation resort but the Indian forest act does not allow this. Only government bodies are allowed to touch the place and Indian government being corrupt and lethargic, you can expect this place to rot and crumple one day for sure. There is only one guard looking after the place. By law, no on is allowed to enter this ruins but the guards are lenient and let people inside if you just hand them some money. If anyone wants to get there, get to rishikesh and ask for ‘chaurasi kuti’ which means 84 huts in Hindi. The ashram had roughly 84 huts, hence the name. Also, there is a ‘Vithal ashram’ in rishikesh. The locals might guide you to that ashram because vithal and beatles sound the same to them. Just ask them to take you to chaurasi kuti across the ‘barage’ which means a dam. So if you want to get to the ashram, cross the dam over the Ganga and get to the other side. There is a ferry service too. Ok.. Take care all.
So happy to have met you man, and coming out in one of your videosis something i NEVER would have expected!! I'm super grateful!! Thanks for doing what you do, and being a constant inspiration to me and many others!!! OM
I am a Pakistani national and almost impossible for us to visit India due to political situation between the two countries. Thanks a lot for showing Indian places
Awesome video! Epic view from your hotel room. Cool the cows and dogs get along. Thanks for making great videos of your travels. India is beautiful. Namaste.

You made me fall in love with country again. I m in Australia for last few years. These videos just make feel to my country that I really miss being away. Keep it up mate.
Dear Gabriel, this video is really amazing for me. One of my highest dreams is to be there some day. I am from Mexico City and I have practice meditacion for many years, and there is where spiritual guides give their satsangs to the devotees. Unfortunatelly is very expensive for me to get there, but you make me feel I am there. Your videos have the magic to transport me to the place. I am very grateful for that. I think you are a great being, thank you very much Gabriel!!!
The crowd, Smell, Noise is all part of India. You can take 1,000$ with you for two weeks and live like a king there in Rishikesh. India is by far my favorite country to visit. Organized chaos is the right word for sure.
Just back from my trip to Rishikesh. Thank you so much for you videos Gabriel as they set me up for the trip so well! It was incredible to walk around and remember and recognise the locations from your videos! I stayed in Tapovan which is the opposite side of Laxman Jhula and up the hill a way and it was amazing. After staying in the Ashram where I did my teacher training, I stayed in the Raj Resort hotel for a couple of nights which was great as the cheaper rooms were 600 INR per night for a large bed, kitchen with fridge and bathroom with a decent shower and hot water. I had a creek flowing outside the room which was amazing for meditation in the morning and drowning out the street noise too so a great find! Thank you again for your videos, I kept expecting to see you walking round the corner videoing!! I look forward to going back again when I have more time and exploring more for example I want to do the Annapurna circuit and go up to the Gangotri glacier next time and up to Ladakh as well as Amritsar 💕✨🙏🏻✨💕
Shivanada charitable hospital people are very helpful. Last year I visited hrishikesh. It was raining, I fell down & had ankle sprain. Shivanada hospital was the nearest so went there, they treated me, gave tablets & support for joint sprain. They didn't even take even one rupee for treatment. That would have easily coated them 2000rs above. Even after repeated request they said if you want to you can donate in some temple, it's complete free service.
Awesome video Gabe ... Will have to make Rishikesh one of my places to visit on my return to India... Also want to do some treks, though likely to follow in your footsteps in Nepal :)
the path to Ram jhoula has to be my favourite walk anywhere..Every time I've walked there I've thought I could live along there....Even had visions of fixing up one or other of the little houses along there..

Brought back memories of my many trips to Rishikesh 15 years ago. Great video. All of your reviews are really respectful of the culture where ever you go.
I love these older videos you did where you dig into the prices and nuts and bolts of a place. I'm thinking of doing a yearlong journey abroad, so these videos are incredibly informative and helpful.
Thanks for these marvelous adventures. Because I'll probably have only 3 weeks to visit India I think Rishikesh would be a great place to just hang out at without trying to see a punch of other places. Maybe Jaipur or Delhi on the periphery. But I just love this town best in your videos.
Thanks for taking us on an informative and vicarious tour of Rishikesh, off the beaten path, as it were. You must have oodles of stamina, my man, trudging down roads and alleyways at such a brisk pace. Your friendly greetings to the locals not withstanding, I find that your interaction with the locals is limited. Perhaps, it is more trouble than it is worth? At any rate, I am happy that you were not harassed by the seemingly ubiquitous scammers, who build a wall of distrust between visitors and the genuine warmth of India. Keep up the good work, bro!

Hi Gabriel and Padmini. Gabriel you are a great man you did documented Rishikesh quite well. It's my hometown and I too LOVE it. There are many places more to document. Padmini you are welcome to our town. Hope you'll like it too.
I had to pause the great video to comment on the guy who stood there looking at the camera..unknowing to him the incognito travel photographer just made him world wide famous. Hilarious...
Hi! Thanks for your reply. We're not worried about safety so much. You have to be smart when you hitchhike, but generally people are nice and friendly anywhere. We've hitchhiked from Thailand to Europe, through 16 countries and have never felt that we've been in any kind of danger. We know it's cheap in India :) We hitchhike to meet and get a closer contact with locals and to get a different experience than the one you get when you get on a bus or train. 😀
More locals are likely to stop & give a ride out of curiosity that a foreigner is seeking one, defenately worth trying!! l would stop defenately unless am in a great hurry.
Hitchhiking in India is a good experience and u'll wonder many indians love it. U'll find most of the people here friendly and helping though at times it's more than desired. You can enjoy the country side and explore what usually is left unseen and unnoticed. Yes weather is a thing to be considered which I am sure evry hitchhiker understands.
Gabriel, I'm so excited I've purchased my tickets for my first trip to India for Feb and March. Looking forward to visiting some of your suggestions and trying some of the meals
Johnny Rockitworld try to go to rajesthan, goa, mumbai, agra(for taj mahal),delhi,mumbai,karela.. etc etc....don't worry for meal 😇 indians meals are Osm you will definitely love it💟💟💟 go and enjoy by your own experience you will love india💟💟💟
Thanks for the update on prices there bro..I'll be going to Rish in September, other than ashrams, with guesthouses can you bargain on the prices for longer stays or monthly prices etc much like other countries I've been to? Thanks Gabriel.
Jai shree ram🚩🚩 You must visit neelkanth Mahadev Temple....... Almost 40km from Rishikesh Most visited place .... Gangotri Dham..... Kedarnath Dham..... Badrinath Dham.... Yamonatri Dham..... Can you visit easily from rishikesh.... And Mata Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu..... Amarnath cave in Kashmir..... And many these indian religious place .... This place is holy india.... And etc places......
As you mentioned, prices can be considerably lower at low key places. Out of all the things Socks were most expensive compared to Indian standards. They can be bought for Rs. 50. Dry fruits are actually expensive here in India. India imports a lot of dry fruits from middle east. Also in big to mid size cities there are a lot of pirated books for less than Rs 200.
Hey Gabriel Meant to mention on the ashram vid. It's gotten pretty expensive there. No longer by donation. At least according to what it says on their website. Lovely place though and we thought it would be like a refuge from the street for a while
Awesome video Gabriel!! This truly helps with understanding how much this place costs as im thinking of travelling here in near future. Cheers man and safe travels!!
Nice video! I wish u b more elaborate in showing whatever subject you choose. I was looking for more price comparison. Well haggling is a good idea in India.
I love your videos Gabriel. Even though I have been to a lot of the places you have, and in some cases stayed at the same hotels, watching your videos takes me back for some really fun memories. If you get a chance go to Kunjapuri Devi temple for sunrise.
Enjoy watching your videos from LA. Hope to travel to Rishikesh when I retire in 4 years. Originally from India but never been to Rishikesh. BTW how come you don't go further up to Badrinath .
A blessed good day sir Gabriel Wowwww what a nice places very interesting of rhiskeshie ganges India nice fascinatinv cool place to.walk around more cool stores to choose stuffs items and souvenir gift items and choltes thank u so much for your excellent nice video keep safe sir Gabe Godbless u from your solid fan viewer from the Philippines sir vhin 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭👏👏👍👍🙏🙏🙏🙂🙂❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👏👏👍👍🙏🙏

Thanks for the update on prices there bro..I'll be going to Rish in September, other than ashrams, with guesthouses can you bargain on the prices for longer stays or monthly prices etc much like other countries I've been to? Thanks Gabriel.
Yes, quite possible that you can bargain down hotel prices, I've done it there before.

Hallo Gabriel
I am Indian and I like your videos because you shared right information this places.
Great, thanks.
Lovely place though and we thought it would be like a refuge from the street for a while
Oh okay, I guess maybe things have changed since I stayed there.
Ved Niketan..same prices as last year....basic yep!! Apparently the food in the canteen there is good..never tried though
Superb Gabriel 👌👌
Love from india
I'm planning on going there later this year, thank you so much for this video!
I love your videos Gabriel. Even though I have been to a lot of the places you have, and in some cases stayed at the same hotels, watching your videos takes me back for some really fun memories. If you get a chance go to Kunjapuri Devi temple for sunrise.
Wow very fun to watch and interesting thanks for sharing :)
that's the problem with some country, they become greed and the prices become close to the european prices, so you think twice beofre travelling...
Thank you...Love your adventures...
Love seeing all the cows walking around town
It's beautiful right??❤❤
Most people are vegetarian in Uttarakhand...
Enjoy watching your videos from LA. Hope to travel to Rishikesh when I retire in 4 years. Originally from India but never been to Rishikesh. BTW how come you don't go further up to Badrinath .
Did you try out cafe Delmar (aka the 60s cafe)?
Nice place with awesome 60s' music vibes.
Sounds a little familiar, but I don't remember if I went in there.
