Surviving the Ruthless Market Stalkers of Varanasi 🇮🇳

- ■ INDIA, VARANASI: Have you ever found yourself in an amazing artisanal or fake goods market in exotic foreign lands... only to have your shopping experience constantly interrupted or maybe even ruined by people who do not even own shops in the market....
...but for some reason think that they should decide where you should go and what you should buy?
On top of that they may even ruin your interactions with shopkeepers you wish to buy goods from and greatly inflate the price of the goods you do buy because shops think that this tout is your guide and he is showing you around. In other words this is an obvious market scam.
India is notorious for this marketplace practice and this Varanasi main market was no exception in this regards. Getting rid of touts can be incredibly hard. I for one do not like to get angry, yell at people or tell someone to get the F away from me as that ruins the mood of not just that market area for me but the rest of the day as well.
So a simple no and leave me alone is about all I will say at least when I am filming a video in one take. That rarely works though... and it didn't here (as you're about to see) either.
In this Varanasi market one guy in particular simply would not take no for an answer and he kept stalking me for a good hour until...
Well ... go see for yourself 🤣

This is one of your best videos in my opinion. The unedited chaos of the markets and constant sensory inputs makes it incredibly immersive and authentic. These unedited ”one go” vlogs are just the best to me, regardless of content.
I could watch 10 of these in a row. But i understand that it must be hard to record them still. These vlogs are just so authentic, a breath of fresh air amongst all the fake shit out there. These are better than 90% of youtube, high production documentaries and pretty much all blockbuster movies.
So inspiring to watch for someone that dreams to travel like this.
Agreed. This is video of the year as far as I am concerned and yes these are the hardest to make

As an introvert I feel like i'm getting exhausted just looking at the video. Thanks for showing the different cultures and life styles around the world where otherwise i wouldn't dare to go by myself. I know it's hard and not possible always but huge thanks for keeping vlogs raw with minimum editing
Phew, I would really go crazy with the trouble and the noise there.
I know right? But I don't think they would bother you in the first place if you didn't show interest as an introvert. Harald is a very outgoing person so no wonder he gets bothered all the time.
i am not an introvert and would hate it, dont worry😅😬
It's not the nicest part of India in my opinion. Soo much more to see elsewhere. India caters for everyone.
Interesting... I'm an introvert through and through and I love this sh*t..

46:00 what a great kid. Hopefully the future generations take his lead and see that being annoying kills the tourism.
I said the exact same thing! 👍
Couldnt agree more, so good to see positive and honest attitude like that. Nothing fake.
You can hope but realistically it won't happen. The economic disparity between india's ultra wealthy and ultra poor is only going to get wider in coming generations so places like varanasi are going to go further down the crazy path they are on now.
This is what I came to say as well. That kid was solid af.

I've had guys like this annoying the hell out of me, telling me where to go and what to do. After a while they ask "sir, give me a tip" like they actually want money for their "guidance" when all they do is ruin your experience. The one thing I've learned in India is that you have to be damn hard and assertive when it comes to your personal space. I know it is hard to do for a normal human being but you have to tell guys like this to f*ck off, it's the only language they understand. Once you unlock this power and know how to get around and manage yourself India is an amazing place to explore; the people, the food, the history. Simply amazing.
Mycket bra video. Otroligt att du håller dig cool i alla situationer och behandlar alla människor, bra och mindre bra, med respekt.
Amount of patience needed to get through this market is unreal. They will not take no for an answer. Great video as always and I'm really enjoying how it's put together. Nothing fancy, just record and play. It shows how legit and authentic the experience is.
It's incredible how crowded these markets are in India. I'm so glad you braved them to allow us to experience it.
Yeah very crowded but the shops are mostly empty
@jeanmanuel77 I noticed that there were quite a few like that, but it seemed like the shop keeper just wasn't visible or they were standing outside the stall amongst the crowd. That or perhaps they were at services or dealing with family emergencies. Its shocking how many stores were only an open alcove with no way to secure the front. Them and the neighbors must work together to watch over one another.
Indeed, way too crowded for me and with the heat on top of that.
During july august varanasi is most crowded (10x) than other months because of the shravan festival of lord shiva, pilgrims from whole country visit there in this months.
I respect you for venturing into that chaotic market, filming, conducting business, and avoiding scammers, all at the same time. We also have chaotic markets here in Nepal, but they are nowhere close to this. I don't think I could last there for more than 10 minutes. Great video, man! Keep them coming.

I love how a bunch of Indian people in the comments are shocked and embarrassed 😂😂😂😂💀 don’t act like you didn’t know it was like this
A lot of people don't visit a lot of places. Also when they show Varanasi, they manage to capture the ghats or the banks of the river serene and peaceful. I guess they purposefully show or record it during the time it's not crowded (early in the morning before 9am maybe). Hence, a lot of people feel it's not that crowded. Then people see vlogs like this and they get surprised. 😂
The way you have captured the place is better than any documentary. The sights, sounds, characters and dare I say smell could be felt through the screen. An immersive experience which would have been incomplete without that guy following you around.

This is such a great video and shows it exactly how it is. My husband and I went there with another couple and for two women it was just impossible to shop. We are middle aged but I suppose looked like an easy target for the touts. Our experience was much like Harald's, but x 10. I am utterly disgusted to see the behavior of our fellow countryman. This is why tourist are scared of visiting at least these places. Varanasi no doubt is beautiful but its the Humans of Varnasi that made the place less welcoming. I feel so sorry for you Herald that you have to go through this in India. But thank you so much for bringing the filth within to the mainstream. I hope people get the sense about the kind of impression they are leaving for the world? To everyone in Varanasi would you visit this place after seeing this kind of behavior of locals to foreigners/visitors. How about building trust instead scamming?
As you can see it's basically a handful of touts which ruin it amongst thousands of people. Normal people are helpful and think it's fun to help out with directions or explanations but then touts will step in push them away and basically start trying to scam you.
At the same time what they are doing is essentially just saying hello and pretending to want to help. And that's obviously not against any rule so I'm not sure it's possible to get rid of this behaviour.
Having said that I just walked around a Kolkatta market and not one person acted like a tout wanting to show me somewhere or following me around so it's obvious that it is possible somehow to have a market free from scamming touts.

I mean I lived in Chennai for 1.5 years, I couldn't fathom going to places you did, and watching your vids makes me feel like I literally wasted my time while I could have had ALOT of fun
Please bless me with your wisdom Lord Baldr !
It's a skill my friend. The more you do it the easier it gets. Start small and don't worry about feeling dumb. It helps to do this in your own local areas. Find somewhere comfortable for you but still in public and just talk to people. Say more than "Hi how are you" to the storekeep. Find something they're wearing or something in the store interesting and just bring it up. "Nice bracelet, what is that?" "What's your necklace about?" "This flag, what is it for?" etc. Eventually start saying things to people who aren't moving in public that you're near. Just go "What are you doing today?" "Have you been to " etc. You'll likely run into people who see little, don't really engage. The key is to not be discouraged by them, they're just busy with their own life and your life continues onward and that's totally ok. You can watch Harald do this here, some people don't really engage with him, either they don't understand him or they're shy or whatever, and Harald moves his camera and moves on.
The fun part are the people who ARE willing to talk to you. You'll get into some lengthy conversations if you let the right people. And then you'll get better at noticing body language, noticing their face and how they change when you talk to them. Then move onward into more unfamiliar environments. The more you do it the more you find it's not too hard to do.
@@RyanKaufman Yes ! I was thinking the same thing, just like any other skill, one has to do this over and over again to get better at it.
And now that you point out, I see the non engaging people. I have encountered them as well (ofcourse we all have - like the rude/nonchalant cashier at a local store), but I think I took their lack of indulgence with me the wrong way.
Your comment really puts things into perspective. Thank you for your comment brother, this is very helpful. 😄

You are right though, most would get sick of it and say "here, take this" (money) and leave me alone. But that only makes them more persistent on their next victim. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see a video of you trolling scammers 😂 I would be willing to bet you would have a wild amount of views on that one! Keep up the amazing content! ✌️
