India's Impossible Market: Nothing for Sale! 🇮🇳

- ■ INDIA, CHENNAI: Some markets are set up for tourists. Those are easy. People will most likely even speak English and it will be hard to leave without buying way more than you came to bargain for.
This secret market I stumbled into in Chennai was different. There were plenty of strange items on offer but buying any of them proved difficult...
What was going on? 🤔
- Now about the subtitles and I'll only write this once since this is the first video. It's basically impossible to do any kind of comedy these days as people have such a poor grasp of history and general knowledge of the world. But you'd think most people knew that the Brits ran huge parts of India as a colony for hundreds of years.
It started with trade and actually just buying stuff like cloth... then fast forward a few decades later and they're controlling the damn factories that produce the clothes and full-scale looting ensued as any Indian will tell you.
Hence the joke was, and I can't believe I have to explain this, that when I come into this street where no foreigners ever venture they get deja vu and take me for a British colonialist who've returned and hence attempt to subtly drive me away by refusing to sell me stuff... lest droves of Pesky Colonialists follow in my footsteps and it all happens again.
If people have a little knowledge of history they'd put 2 and 2 together and see what the supposed humour with the subtitles was here.... I see many Indians get it and thought it was funny... foreigners however 🤣🤦🏼♂

Dude
I rarely comment BUT this is a fantastic video. I was born and raised in Chennai ,
How ever you ended up in Moore market this place has a long history of hawking and dealing with recycled goods and having ability to fix house hold general goods (white goods spare parts ) ...while the Equivalent for motor bikes is Pudupettai, Electronics is Richie street ,and cars is GP road (General peters road ) all within 20 mins of each other . There were also a strong Irish settlement in that part of Chennai (Stanley hospital and Gosha hospital is testament to that ) along with rippon building (current corporation building ) the central railway station all way to marina beach ..the proximity of English settlements meant people had street knowledge of common English words vocabulary for many years .
Glad you survived the heat and humidity sound and safe ...keep rocking
Nice history lesson! Thank you 🙏🏻

- Hilarious 🤣🤣.. and as expected.... some people just can't take a video for what it is: namely just a video. I showed you a unique street with some pretty cool people. Ok, so if you speak the local language I can see you think a lot of people were not so cool but so what? I thought it was interesting hangin out there and you all got to see a unique street and community you will probably never get to even hear about unless I stumbled in there.
Stop taking life so seriously and if you want Vlogs with boring guitar/synth music and scripted dining and sunset scenes... aren't there one million channels you can go an watch that on?
I'll continue exactly the way I want and always have which is is too film unique things and a wide variety of things.
And yes that will eventually also include more normal life as well as some luxury hotel videos (since so many are so damn eager to prove to the world that 5 star hotels exist in India. We all know that you have extreme luxury too)
So take a chill pill... relax and enjoy the show!

Harald, I've been watching you for years, envying your life as a maverick nomad. Never change. No one else gives us content like you. You show us things we'd never see otherwise, whether its drinking from a boob mug in Mexico, travelling with Jeff the llama, or swimming in the torrential rivers of the Himalayas. Videos like this is why I live vicariously through you. Ignore the idiots who complain. If it wasn't for you, I'd never get to see the true heart of so many amazing places and so many ways to cook pork. Much love and gratitude, Haraldo!
What's a maverick nomad? Never heard them used together before.
@@Loverofdaimbars maverick (adj) = unorthodox & nomad = wanderer. It sounds weird, I know, because maverick is usually used as a noun. I've been a Latin teacher for 25+ years, so sometimes my inner nerd escapes, lol. 🤪
Me too. Being somewhat disabled, it would be impossible to have these experiences on my own, so I live sometimes vicariously trough creators like Harald. Much love from a fellow norseman.
Thank you for getting back to basics. This is why I subscribed years ago. The videos in India are almost always the most entertaining, especially the ones off the beaten path.
As always such authentic content, showing us 1 hour of their reality. Sat here on my phone watching this really shows how greatful we should really be.
Wish more people could appreciate pure reality like this instead of complaining about this or that. This is as real as it gets and it’s fully unedited. One jump cut and it ain’t as real as it could be
@@HaraldBaldr Spot on, Northman.
@@HaraldBaldr Very stark reality, but still people are usually kind and seem happy to see someone out of the norm wandering through an area that surely sees few tourists. A lot less kinetic than Varanasi, but also a lot more peaceful even with all the repairs going on.

Ungrateful mtfs...good they're poor lol
This is a very serious problem in our country.
.
One you show kindness and donate some money. They will "seriously" assume that you are one big fool and careless about your money. Ahh , now is the time to emotionaly extract more money from you.
.
And during this money extraction not once, not once, do the money suckers think of your act as gratefulness.
We saved this video as we didn’t want to finish it in one sitting & continued it the next day. We almost didn’t want for it to end. It felt just as suspenseful as a Night Shyamalan movie.
Harald has some serious talents (no surprise there), and more than his talents, he’s got one thing a lot of us don’t have - abundant COURAGE.
I grew up in Chennai, and lived there till I was about 17, and I would not dare go into this street. Ever.
I wish I have the courage that Harald has. Or, at least 10% of it. One day.
I cannot understate how much I appreciate your unedited, slice-of-life documentation. Thanks for sharing the world with us
I think you mean overstate ;)
@@GodLovesComics You sure? It would be easy to overstate how much I appreciate Harald's video. For example, I could say that I appreciated this video more than I appreciate my wife's warm embrace after a long day at work. Rather, my comment was letting him know that it would be remiss for me to understate just how much I appreciate this style. It's less that I am unable to understate, and more that I would hope that my admiration is clearly conveyed. However, at that point it does kinda feel a little back-and-forth, so I guess I should have just opened up with "I appreciate". The End.
@@steakandeggss Yes, I understand (and clearly he did as well) that you were showing your appreciation for his video and its honesty. I'm simply saying that what you intended to write was that you cannot "overstate" how much you appreciated it. Understate would mean that you cannot find words to say how little you appreciated it. It's the opposite of what you intended. But no matter, it's clear enough what you were trying to say. Take care~
@@GodLovesComics Uh...I intended to write "understate" is my point. Your stance is assuming that my use of the word "cannot" in the original comment is synonymous with "unable to". However, as I just explained, I was expressing that it would be irresponsible for me to understate how much I appreciate that style. You could replace "cannot" with "don't want to" to see the angle I'm coming from, if that helps. Yeah, the phrase that you're endorsing has an equivalent sentiment and there is ultimately nothing lost in communication. However, I would like to stand my ground and once again defend that there is a world where my original choice of words is what I intended to write.
@@steakandeggss Never mind. Enjoy your obstinance. I have better things to do.
Let's take a moment to praise Harald's patience in the face of enormous language difficulties. Awesome video as always! 🔥
I credible just how far Haralds f friendliness and smile takes him. A joy to watch
He could bring along an interpreter but that would not get all the misunderstandings where the humour comes from, I guess.

Harald you've got 2.34 M subs and 43k views on this video in 3 hrs, you must be doing something right that people like and you're being authentic, if people don't like that too bad for them, you cant please everyone. Hope you spend a lot more time in India, its true culture and diversity is endless
I am a Malayali (person from the state of Kerala, a state which borders Tamil Nadu and is culturally close to it). I was born and raised in the north eastern part of England though, my parents immigrated from India before I was born.
This video was fantastic to watch as Indian, even when I go to India, I don't get to see stuff like this as we usually just visit family and do other stuff.
