    One issue I have with this film, aside from the fact that Lillian Hellman made it up and presented it as fact, is that the actors who play the "young" ones are in their 20s playing teens and don't really resemble Jane Fonda or Vanessa Redgrave who are about 39 and supposed to be in their 20s. They should have just had one set of actors instead of two, unless they were depicting kids.

    The anti-Nazi German underground was a fascinating story in itself. Another good story on that topic is "Shadows In Paradise" by Erich Maria Remarque.

      Quite a lot of her memoir exaggerated and made up stories about the extent of her involvement in the Spanish Civil War and World War II, as it contradicted quite a lot of what was said by other notable people who were there. The real person on whom Julia is believed to have been based never even knew her.

    JULIA (1977) with Jane Fonda is my favorite film. But Vanessa Redgrave's performance as Julia shines in a film filled with great performances. Set in the 1930's, the themes of anti-fascism, friendship, art and theater are blended to perfection. The apogee is the tense, fraught scene between Hellman and Julia in a Berlin tavern as Hellman smuggles in cash for anti-Nazi activities, and while Fonda is excellent, Fonda herself said Redgrave's performance was on an entirely elevated level.

    The real-life story of Muriel Gardiner is worth knowing about. If Lillian Hellmann's fictional story helps Gardiner be better-known, I can't complain.
    And the movie has some narrative validity, regardless. When I was growing up, I was the sort of kid who couldn't cross the log bridge, and would've needed to wade through the creek. I wish I'd've had a supportive friend like Julia, who'd have told me it's OK not to try to do what I can't do.

    Several things struck me in this beautiful film. First can anyone recognise the game Julia plays with her companion towards the end involving reciting a story and adding details until the action cuts out by what is said? Secondly is there a lesbian subtext to all the friendship or was it entirely devoid of sexual attraction...was Julia irresistible because she was Julia.? Thirdly I simply love seeing the perfectly reenacted corps of the League of German Maidens who throng the train and the station when Jane Fonda goes to Berlin. Hitlers famously designed uniforms in such evidence and the whole milieu so well evoked. Yes I could believe in every frame of this film and nice to see Meryl Streep in an early role as well as Fonda at her very best and Vanessa Redgrave playing a character with whom everyone would soon be enamoured. The tragedy snuffs her out too quickly.

  • @edwardjames50
    @edwardjames50 11 лет назад +2

    @Wanessa Lima: In your description, you say that "Julia" stars Jane Fonda, Vanessa Redgrave, Meryl Streep, etc. The movie hardly stars Ms. Streep. It was one of her first film appearances; she has two miniscule scenes, and in one of them, at Sardi's, the night of the opening of "The Children's Hour," she hasn't a single line. . However, you have her name mentioned before Maximilian Schell and Jason Robards! Hey, I love Meryl, and who doesn't? But "starring Meryl Streep? Hardly!

      Although in fact not a starring rôle, not so objectionable as to make an issue of it.
      Younger audiences might look up the movie further who otherwise would not.
      Same can reasonably be the case with 'Manhattan' and 'The Deer Hunter.'

    OF COURSE IT WAS COMMON! It wasn't out in the open then the way it is now, but it was certainly common. And as for the film, lesbianism is a side issue at best, as Lillian and Julia are not shown to be lovers. If they were, you might have a point. The whole movie, anyway, is fiction masquerading as autobiography.

    This is based on a true story, one which Lillian Hellman experienced first hand. And how typical for the rich girl, Regrave, to risk her life and lose her leg to help this cause who did nothing for her in return including caring for or about her child. Filthy bastards. Hellman went to her grave with her secret re the identity of the players.

      HBB I read that Hellman appropriated the life story of another woman, a doctor. the doctor had the same agent as Hellman and the agent told the story to Hellman and helped her to write a book proposal passing it off as her own. I have no way of knowing whether this is true but I remember reading the accusation when it was made publicly.

    • @tadimaggio
      @tadimaggio 3 года назад +4

      @@haw95 You may rest assured that it was/is COMPLETELY true. I had the honor and the pleasure of being a friend of Muriel Gardiner's until her death in 1985. (I will be 66 in November 2020). Hellman appropriated Muriel's career in the Austrian anti-Nazi resistance, and wrote a bogus memoir with herself as the heroine. If you want to read the true story, track down a copy of Muriel's memoir "Code Name Mary: Memoirs of an American Woman in the Austrian Underground." Every detail of Muriel's account was amply vouched for, both by the people whose lives she saved (approximately 600), as well as by the surviving members of the Austrian Resistance. The exact opposite is true of Hellman's account; no one in Austria ever heard of any "Julia", or indeed of ANY American woman in the Resistance other than Muriel herself.
