I was in London a few years ago. Went for a walk early in the morning, walking down Piccadilly when I saw Tom Baker coming towards me. I said Good Morning Mr Baker, I loved you as Rasputin. He gave me a huge grin, said thank you, no one has ever said that to me before😂
I went on a field trip for history class in 1971 to see this movie, when this came out in theaters. I was about 13 years old. I never forgot it, and was kind of traumatized at the ending. An excellent movie , which I hope to see again.
Me too, I was sixteen, and a couple of years late. And had never seen Do tor Who....
So did I
You saw it in a field trip as well? I believe I was 12. It was 7th grade. I went to pain and I'm shooting your high school in Royal oak Michigan, which is right outside of Detroit. And we went to see this as a field trip.
Me as an American who has expirenced revolution before on July 4th 1776, Civil War from 1861-1865, 2 bloody Sundays 1. Custer's last stand 2. Selma 1965 and bein' involved WW1 and some involvement in the Russian revolution I can sympathize with the Romanovs and their whole entire family.
Exquisite movie, so haunting and so moving. Michael Jayston should have got the Oscar and BAFTA nominations, just as Janet Suzman. Brilliant cast - Michael Jayston, Janet Suzman, Laurence Olivier, Ian Holm, Harry Andrews, Irene Worth... and Roderic Noble who played Alexei was amazing.
I has no idea why this film was underrated till the point it was completely forgotten.
Can't imagine spending 'date night' watching a 3 hr movie about the Russian Revolution. Maybe this should've been a miniseries like Shogun. Got 6 Oscar nominations though.
After getting frozen out by David Lean on Dr. Zhivago, Sam Spiegal was determined to have his Russian epic movie, so when Robert Massie's Nicholas and Alexandra was published, he snapped it up.
The film was a faithful adaptation of Massie's book, a well-made film with outstanding acting by a Masterpiece Theater-type cast, great direction, sumptuous art direction and a haunting score by the great Richard Rodney Bennett. It was an expensive film for its time (a $9M budget) and a box office failure (It only grossed $7M). It did win a couple Oscars and was nominated for Best Picture, but American audiences don't always flock to see non-American history.
It's a brilliant film. I guess it's forgotten because there are no big stars in it except a small role by Laurence Olivier?
I am wondering the same thing. I haven’t seen it yet, but it looks quality.
This movie is a masterpiece especially for its time. It has the best portrayal of the Romanovs that I’ve seen. The Nexflix series, The Last Tsars, are complete trash and is a complete disgrace to the Romanovs. They also did a fantastic job at choosing an actor that genuinely looks very much like Nicky.
The book, Robert K. Massie's 1968 "Nicholas And Alexandra"
that forms the basis for this movie is one the fairest account of this worldwide heart-rending tragedy.
Please read it.
The author having himself a son suffering from the much dreaded hemophilia,
offers a more nuanced portrait of Nicholas II, a Tsar called ''Bloody Nicholas".
While Ivan The Terrible and Peter The Cruel both mass-murderers, both murdered their own sons,
the very ones they had chosen to succeed them, because they feared their sons would become too humane.
Mr. Massie correctly (at least for me) assessed that no other leader of the time could have handled the events better and ride them.
(The most interesting chapters on Rasputin are about his occult powers, above all his hypnotic eyes which
(are chilling reminders of those of another bloodthirsty mustachioed dictator : 'dolf (Hitler) Schickengruber.
(In 1971 appeared the book ''Psychic Discoveries Behind The Iron Curtain" by Sheila Ostrander and Lynn Schroeder
(that shows the occult & the supernatural always very much present in Russia despite Sputnik & nukes.)
This is to be compared to one Joseph (Stalin) Vissarionovitch Dzhugashvili who had his own chosen successor Kirov killed, because this one was too popular with the people.
Robert Duvall's interpretation of "Stalin"(1992) is to be remembered too, making us reflect no end on
Vyacheslav (Molotov) Scriabin's reflection to Nikita Krutschev in the movie : " Our History Requires A Stalin !"

Netflix ? surprise surprise
Anything Netflix is trash.
What the fuck are you??? Pro monarchist???
@@Charlesputnam-bn9zy I’m currently reading Massie’s book for the second time, such an intriguing, fascinating but sad story captured so brilliantly in this film.

Good read sir !
There are books I've reread for the 6th time,
like Helen McInnes' 1951"Neither Five Nor Three",
John LeCarre's 1963"The Spy Who Came In From The Cold" !
One of the best films you will ever see.
Rest In Peace Michael Jayston.

Love this! Much better quality than the original trailer. Thank you!
Just imagine how the Russian monarchy could have been regenerated if Nicholas had been told in advance of Father Gapon's march to the Winter Palace, had received him on the balcony in full sight of the crowds, accepted his petition, embraced him, and announced to the people that "a new day is beginning for Russia". This would have been a living fulfillment of the ancient image of the "Batushka Tsar", the Father of his people, and would have taken the wind out of the revolutionairies' sails in one stroke. Most of the reforms that the Russian people wanted were social, rather than political: decent wages and working conditions for the factory workers, the right to land ownership for the peasants (who, even in 1905, were 85% of the population), and free speech and the right to travel freely for the middle class; the Tsar's personal power was not the main issue. What felled the Imperial system was not tyranny as much as deafness and blindness on the part of the upper class. And, ultimately, it was not only the Russian people, but the entire world, that paid -- and is still paying -- the price.
and right today the 1% has not learned this lesson. The billionaire class is just begging that capitalsim be overthrown !! They take more & more and leave less and less for the poor & middleclass
Wow, you are so correct! Good analysis.
@@bewitchedforever5381 I've always loved Winston Churchill's comment: "The problem with capitalism is capitalists; the problem with Communism is Communism."
But Czarism was a tyranny. The system, which was greater than one man, could probably not make such reforms. The nobility, the dominant class under Czarism, would never have tolerated land ownership among the peasants, at least not on a large enough scale to take the wind out of the sails of revolutionaries. The nobility and the capitalists would have pushed back against efforts to meet urban workers demands for decent working conditions and decent wages. Those demands were not yet met in the USA or Western Europe. And let us not forget the violent repression often directed in America against workers demanding decent wages and conditions. If workers in rich democratic countries often had to face police, national guard and even the military during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, how could that possibly be avoided in a semi-feudal country like Russia? And even assuming the Czarist regime was able and willing to accord freedom of speech, press, travel and other such rights to the educated middle classes, would that have been enough to stem the tide of revolution? Of course, it is questionable whether such rights even for the middle classes would be compatible with Czarism. No, I think this was a system that was simply doomed and could not likely have been saved by moderate liberal reform in the time of Nicholas II. Assuming that was ever possible, it was probably too late as of 1905. What MIGHT have worked (not sure) would have been for gradual liberal reforms over a period of several decades preceding Nicholas II, the avoiding of the war with Japan and Russian involvement in WWI. That may have DELAYED revolution, but I doubt revolution could be avoided completely. You say that the problem was no tyranny, but blindness. Yet it is often tyranny which begets blindness. Russia was already probably the most authoritarian country in Europe, even compared to other monarchies. And had been for centuries.

Are doomed to repeat it.
Many Thanks for uploading this original 35mm 'Scope trailer for the film. It looks far better than the old heavily cropped at the sides pan and scan transfer originally uploaded on RUclips.
To this day, this movie still holds out as a masterpiece
Tom Baker's greatest role! :-D

This is a great movie 🎬, I have been a Romanov buff since I was 16 and read Massie's book "Nicholas and Alexandra" I am 44 now!
The good points, they got the characters right, especially the Romanovs, Kerensky, Rasputin, Kobylinsky and the Bolsheviks.
The bad points, there are a few mistakes like the Prime Minister planning the celebrations of 300 years of Romanov rule in 1913 when he was assassinated 2 years before and towards the end the Imperial family travelling together from Tobolsk to Yekaterinburg when in fact it was Nicholas, Alexandra and their 3rd daughter Maria and the rest followed a few weeks later when Alexei had recovered enough from what turned out to be his last bad attack of Haemophilia after going down the stairs on a sledge out of sheer boredom.
Just so you know I have been to St Petersburg, Moscow, Tobolsk (I have seen the stairs Alexei famously slid down on a sledge!) and Yekaterinburg.
They got the entourage right like doctor Botkin, the French teacher Pierre Gilliard and Alexei's sailor Nagorny too.
One thing is this film was made in 1971 and we know so much more now about what happened in those days and you could put alot of that new information into any new Nicholas and Alexandra film and you could have Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia doing alot more than just looking girly and pretty.
Tatiana never exposed herself to any Bolshevik guard either.
Interesting fact, Lynne Frederick who played Tatiana in the movie 🎬 in real life was famously married to Peter Sellars! I could imagine Anastasia being married to him but not Tatiana.
RIP Michael Jayston. He played Raquel's father in Only Fools And Horses.
I think we all saw this on a history class field trip! I wish I remembered my history teacher's name.
Great Movie

Hello-
one of the great historical epics ever. unfortunately the Twilight Time blu-ray disc which is A+ is out of print.
If interested, try Fall of the Eagles. It was done by the BBC, 13 episodes, and at about the same time as Nicholas and Alexandra. I find if watching both, one fills in the gaps and makes the story fuller.

I bought it on Apple and that scene is included.

Only 300 years the family ruled huh? And some people wonder why there was an uprising? They could have avoided that uprising if they wouldn't have been so Draconian during their rule
The ruling elites are always out of touch with reality
This movie could have been so much better, the production values are mainly what I mean here. It was made in 1971 and LOOKS like it was made in 1971...the grand duchess's hairstyles for example...
This was *a very* expensive picture by 1971 standards.
Have you seen the quality? That is amazing for a film that old. I could barely tell it was made in 1971, the quality is better than some movies today.
Well the thing is the Tsars sevents had gold sewen into their socks, no movie has the budget to show the Tsars extravagance
At the time, Russia was still the Soviet Union so there wasn't as much information about the Romanovs that there is now, hence the historical inaccuracies. Still, one of the best films about the last Russian Imperial Family.
As far as the grand duchess's hairstyle, I have noticed that many movies about history have actresses with hairstyles from the time the movie was actually made like Laura in Dr. Zhivago and her 60s ratted hair, and even Vivien Leigh in Gone With the Wind with an occasional 30s hair-do.
Hello
Great movie but sad endin'
For me as an American who has expirenced revolution before on July 4th of 1776, I can sympathize with the Romanovs and their whole family🇺🇲🤝🇷🇺. Us Yankee Blue Coats even expirenced our own 'Bloody Sunday' on June 25-26 of 1876 aka Lieutenant Colonel. George Custer's last stand The Battle of the Little Big Horn River. Only 2 of Custer's subordinate officers survived, Major. Marcus Reno and Captain. Fredrick Benteen, 13 Cavalrymen under their commands survived and their Crow indian Tribe scouts under Crow Indian scout Chief Ariaka survived.🇺🇲🤝🇷🇺

He brought us to the highest moment in human history. :)
@Brady Fries That's a pretty ignorant statement, you clearly don't know anything about the October revolution of 1917 as there were no casualties involved in it. Unlike every other bourgeois revolution that had come before it.
@Brady Fries Nope, it was a bloodless revolution, so you clearly don't know your history about the revolution. The gulags existed before the revolution, in fact many of the revolutionaries were sent to them. Lenin didn't overthrow the monarchy the soviets did, and they instituted vast democratic and political rights to all workers never before seen and subsumed responsibility of the state under the workers through the Soviets, it was a far cry from a dictatorship, the degeneration of the Soviet Union happens under Stalin.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_Revolution
@Brady Fries Wrong, the early days of the revolution resulted in epochal shifts in freedoms as opposed to tsarism, but the real problem was the collapse of international socialist parties due to the first world war and thus the isolation of the Soviet Union and international communism. Thus the subsequent degeneration of the Soviet Union was itself an adaptation to capital and the born necessity of Bonapartism.
@Brady Fries In capitalism the state manages the crises produced by capitalism by supporting policies that adapt the state to the needs of capital, especially as it comes into conflict with the needs of the people. Socialism is concerned with the same problem, but instead of subject society to capital it subjects the management of capital to the proletariat and thereby places society above capital. In other words capitalist politics, and indeed all politics, is already socialism as capitalism is just the unconscious attempt (i.e. automaton) to manage the contradictions that are produced by the valorization process of capital. As for dissent in communist countries, yes people did in fact debate, disagree, etc in the early years of the Russian Revolution, this kind of deliberation is essential to the practice of the dictatorship of the proletariat. Later on there were "purges" that did root out all dissenting voices under Stalin's rule, but that was at least 10 years later.
I think this movie didn’t age well at all. With all the new information and all that we know now about this story it seems totally anglicized on its demeanors , Alexandra is portrayed as an unattractive tough woman and the children seem to be taken out of an English novel ( I know the author is English ) and totally whitewashed from their Russian identity. The Netflix series The Last Czar is a much better and more accurate depiction of the remarkable events that took place back then
None of the peasants/serfs that lived under their brutality had a movie made for them. A disgrace. This is wealthy propagandist tripe.
