Miranda (Meryl Streep) sets Andy (Anne Hathaway) straight when she laughs at their debate over two seemingly similar belts.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Lauren Weisberger's best-selling novel about a young woman who stumbles into the hectic worlds of high fashion and publishing comes to the big screen in this comedy. Andrea "Andy" Sachs (Anne Hathaway) is a bright young woman from the Midwest who has just graduated from college and wants to work as a magazine writer. Andy has applied for a job at "Runway," America's most prestigious fashion journal; though Andy has little to no interest in the garment trade, they are one of the only magazines in New York with a job opening -- second assistant to editor Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep). As Andy quickly learns, Miranda is a diva with plenty of power within the magazine business and she isn't afraid to use it, and though Andy lands the job (primarily by being in the right place at the right time), she soon learns that working for Miranda could test the patience of a saint thanks to her endless demands and refusal to acknowledge the end of a work day. You speak the truth. I felt the tension of being in the room from such a mildly annoyed tone but what I heard was her 10 seconds away from decapitating someone for wasting her time
I swear the fact that her character was suppose to be loud and yelling but Meryl decided to be quite soft yet commanding is scary! She is so intimidating without having to yell
I think Meryl did a brilliant job with it, more so because to me she is scarier than the book version!!

Meryl Streep is proof that you don’t have to raise your voice to command respect. She didn’t even have to swear once. That is where true power lies. If someone can deliver a powerful speech without resorting to losing their composure, that’s true strength of character and talent ❤️

The "lumpy blue sweater" was from Andy's point of view: Andy couldn't care less about clothes, their colour, their size and so she thought in simple terms on which taste and nuance had no bearing. Miranda then proceeded to switch to the language that people who make clothes use.
It reminds me of the scene in Girl with a Pearl Earring when Vermeer asks Griet to describe the colour of clouds. There's nothing more educational than real appreciation.

Honestly Andy’s attitude even got to me in this scene. Imagine you’ve just started work at a job you’re demonstrably not qualified for and laughing in your superior’s faces for doing their jobs.

Watching as a kid, I couldn't really comprehend what happened in this scene. Now I'm older and I can comprehended Andy's snark by snorting, Miranda's absolute power throughout this entire scene, but the weirdest detail I finally realized I picked up on is that I saw exactly what Miranda was choosing with the belts. One had a large buckle while the other didn't. That's what she was picking from for the outfit, and exactly why they were both so different.
Buckle size and design pattern. Perhaps even stitching.

And the shade of teal is slightly different. The one she picked is a smidge cooler tone than the one with the big buckle, plus what y’all said. So yeah, all in all, they are “so different”. Wearing one as opposed to the other would change the outfit.
I do this now (try one one belt and then another) and it’s absolutely crazy how you can alter an outfit so much with such a small detail.

Absolutely love this scene and I regularly reference it when I meet people who claim not to care about fashion. *Everyone* cares about fashion to some degree - you wear what you wear because you want to be perceived a certain way, even if that way is “I don’t care about clothes”.
Unless you plan on living the rest of your life as a nudist, fashion is a form of self-expression that every single one of us participates in.

Ages ago I wrote about “off the rack” personalities. Most people buy their identity off the rack - coordinated and accessorized by the fashion industry. It provides via your clothes an announcement about your values, your opinions, who you think you are, what you like to do, the music you like, who you hang out with, your goals - your ego, your identity.
So much easier for people to buy that prefabricated, and select their friends based on who fits.
Target country dresses, anyone? With brown leatherette boots.
Or maybe people don't want to end up in jail for streaking. Sit down you sheep!

This feels like when those highschool science teachers hear you say you don't really like science and go "but science is in everything you do!! You wouldn't have some of your favourite things without it! Even the mere act of breathing is somehow related to Chemistry Physics and Biology all at once! You HAVE to like science!!"
...No I don't. I can breathe and also enjoy the fruits of modern scientific achievement, and even be mildly interested when yet another country puts something new on the moon; without actually caring all that much about science. I respect it as a field though - that's important.
Similarly, I love fashion. But I don't expect others to love it as much as me just because they fill a basic social obligation we all have to in order to exist in society. As long as they respect the craft itself, I don't really care.

The way Meryl did this monologue so casual and effortless is really mindblowing. She's truly a beast in acting.

Flareout55 yeah, I honestly felt terrified for Anne Hathaway's character when I watched this. It's amazing how an actress can go and add tension to an atmosphere with a single line. Before the actual conflict of the scene comes into play. As a writer, that kinda terrifies me. Very few can take command of a script like Streep can.

I love that she gives a pause before saying "from a pile of stuff" almost like downgrading the line separating it from the speech of history lesson.

Well the stylist in this movie is the legendary Patricia Field, so it's par for the course. She cleverly chose outfits that will be timeless.
I genuinely still can’t see how Miranda was the villain in this movie. If anything, the villain should be the friends that tried to shame Anne Hathaway for eventually taking an interest in her job & caring about fashion and her work.
Agreed. Her friends (and especially her whiny boyfriend) were horrendous. She was super stressed and working so diligently to do her job well, and they all showed zero empathy. 👎🏼
To be fair, she did take too much of an interest in her job. To the point she missed important social commitments and such. But yes. The way her friends are more than happy to accept the gifts - that she only got because of her work - then turn around and shame and belittle her for her work ethic is extremely selfish and not what a friend would do at all. I can see why they'd have a conversation with her about being too invested and allowing their friendships to slip through the cracks, but the level of venom they expressed made them instant drop-worthy friends.
That’s honestly a great point lol! The next time I rewatch this movie, I’ll think differently about Miranda.they always say “keep your Friends close and your enemy closer!
She’s the villain because she’s the dictator who wants the world to dress exactly how she and a handful of designers want us to dress. They dictate what we wear and they dictate the circumstances in which these things are produced. The saddest point of the film is moment Andy decides to conform. Which is probably what you have done considering you cannot see the problem with Miranda and the industry overall.

This scene shows that Miranda actually saw potential in Andy. Pretty sure she'd never waste that many words on someone she considers completely useless.
You know what I actually like this take. Miranda wouldn't "waste" that much time to deliver a lecture to someone unless she sees potential in them. If she really did think Andy to be useless, she would've just fired her on the spot. Instead she gave her the slap that ultimately makes Andy *appreciate* fashion.

Weeeeeeell, maybe. Monologues like this are often exposition devices for the _viewers._ It could be the case that the monologue was so long and detailed because Miranda saw potential in Andy, but I personally consider it more likely that the movie was telling _us_ how out of touch Andy was.
No because the belts ARE DIFFERENT. The buckles can completely change an outfit. It seems that the stitched in the belts themselves are different, which could be due to a fabric change, causing a possible clash.
This scene really shows how Miranda is in a league of her own.
Andy's ignorance and Miranda's crushing speech aside, I don't think the argument is whether those belts are different, because they clearly are. The argument is "whether they are SO different?" Are they SO different that that difference would cause an uproar in the garment were the wrong one chosen? Surely the buckles are different, but the colours, at least to my admittedly untrained eyes, are exactly the same. I think the exaggerated "so", with regard to their minute differences, is to maintain a partition between us, the audience and them, the experts, for this speech to have power and importance. In reality, our reality, the two belts are almost interchageable.
Me, I would've gone for the horseshoe buckle, because I thought it complemented the outfit instead of calling attention to your stomach.

@@mkphotofilm to our untrained eyes obviously. i'd imagine that actual professionals in the field could give a few words on how the design and colour of a belt buckle could indeed change a whole outfit.
literally just grasping at thin air here but let's say you're wearing an all black outfit where the buckle is particularly evident (metallic grey vs matte black). a particularly sharp-angled buckle (maybe even triangular) might come off as edgy or standoffish, whereas a rounded buckle looks just a little friendlier.
When I was a child watching this, I was sympathetic towards Andy bcs I too didn't understand the point of their jobs. Now 15 years later, graduated, employed, and switched jobs like five times, I understand the point of this movie now.
It was never about fashion or style. It was about work ethics; about how much we are willing to sacrifice to achieve success. And even the subject of "success" was subjective.
Andy's attitude at the beginning really infuriates me now, knowing how hard it is to get a job and how hard learning it. She didn't research the company before applying to it, doesn't dress appropriately for her interview, disrespectful towards her superiors, and blatantly showed her dissatisfaction from working there. Nigel was right; she should've quit, or better yet, apply to Auto Universe.
Sure, Miranda is not the best boss; she is perfectionist, demanding, and hard to please. Even downright a bully. But it was because she was annoyed at how mediocre Andy was at her job. You can see her mellowed out when Andy started to take her job seriously. And at end of the movie, when they departed, Miranda already sees Andy as an equal. They don't part as boss vs assistant, but as human beings who just had different goals in life and learn their lessons.

Very beautifully put ! I agree with every word and you perfectly summarized the ending. The ending had always left me feeling a bit empty, but you're absolutely right. Miranda did end up seeing Andy as an equal.

I'm actually curious as to where Andy would be years later if she has any regrets or is perfectly happy.
One thing I just noticed: Andy was the only one wearing a shade of blue (cerulean, to be accurate). Everyone else in this scene wears warm/earthen colors. An effective way of telling, through clothes, how disconnected Andy was from everything happening around her.
No wonder this movie got a Best Costume Design nomination at the Oscars.

Miranda doesn't raise her voice once in this film, yet still manages to be absolutely terrifying. I had a teacher in middle school who was the same way. Very soft spoken, never raised her voice, but still commanded so much respect, and instilled so much fear in us.
I had an art teacher in high school who was exactly like that. We had to strain to hear her speak and we were all petrified of her. Not even the most brazen of students ever dared misbehave when she was in command of the classroom.

Her monologue here was very important. The fashion industry is really down to making money. These designers are artists. What they produce are the catalysts for trends and they really do trickle down to department stores and lower-end retailers, providing millions of jobs for people on the way. Imagine how many people have to work for a customer saying "This is comfortable on me and it also looks good". From the people that find the colour, to the fabric, to the cut, to the sewing. Miranda is absolutely right. Fashion is every single thing we wear. Imagine how difficult it is for fashion brands to cover all the customers needs and also discover "the new thing".

Sure, we all have to wear clothes, but the fashion industry churns out way more clothing than their customers can wear, and insists everything goes out of style after a year or two just to sell more products. The most prestigious and expensive fashion labels routinely destroy perfectly good unsold merchandise instead of donating them. Meanwhile, no one in the fashion industry cares that there are poor people all over the world who don't have enough clothes or shoes to wear. There are millions of people living in poverty out there who would love to have "that lumpy blue sweater."

i LOVE how she explains the history and meaning of fashion. this scene alone illustrates the rich education fashion and how people view it as "stuff," when in reality, it plays a deeper role in everyday life. enlightening!
It's still just stuff. Trivial stuff that humans put a high value on because they need to make something important in their lives, and maybe also to justify the rampant human rights violations which go on in the name of fuelling the fashion industry. Let's see Miranda give that monologue about the power of fashion to the Bangladeshi people who spent all their lives in sweat shops making those designer scarves so Miranda could live in a New York penthouse above the common people.

She managed to sound so intimidating an scary without needing to raise her voice a bit, and the way she delivers the lines seems so effortless, because Miranda knows what she’s talking about, and can see that Andy clearly doesn’t care enough to have this job. She still sees potential in her but still wants to make sure she stays in line like everyone else. Moral: Don’t mess with Miranda Presely

I love this monologue. This is for the people who are always looking down on certain jobs and certain people just because they take their work seriously. You don’t know how hard someone’s job is until you actually have to do it.
My favorite thing about this scene is how Miranda doesn't just stop what she's doing to give the speech. She just casually completes the outfit while she's giving a lesson in fashion history.
Just to reiterate, she finishes a high-profile fashion line without even giving it her full attention because she's recounting the history of _one shade of blue from memory._

Thats something about Miranda that the film does really great. Miranda is always working in the scenes she's in with Andy, writing papers while she tells her what to do, meeting contacts at a party or completing a fashion line.
Theres only a few times she isn't working when Andy is with her is first, when Andy walks in on her trying to placate her angry husband(that moment of vulnerability is, I believe, why she sets the impossible task for Andy). The second is when she opens up about her upcoming divorce, how she's dragged by the newspapers and wanting her daughters to be left alone.
(PS:You can argue the scene where she tells Andy she reminds her of herself before Andy leaves is her not working, but it's on the way to the next event just before Andy quits, so really up to interpretation. :P )

@@phousefilms actually when she’s talking about the divorce she is still kind of working since the one of the main things she is doing in that scene is trying to rearrange her seating chart. But you could argue that’s not her “working” but still
I heard that was Meryl’s choice at several points, another example being the scene where she never stops flipping through the Book while she’s telling Andy to make the choice on whether to screw Emily over. Meryl wanted to communicate that Miranda never has a free moment, she’s always working.
Notice that Meryl's eyes never even look at Andie, they are fixed on the sweater as if to say that Andie is irrelevant. She breaks the gaze to look at Andie's face only for a split second, when she says "a pile of stuff". Extremely powerful, and we feel it subconsciously.

@@ThomasJr What ignorance you have to the arts. Every actor, let alone auteurs like Streep, think about these things. They learn them, to the point where it’s second nature. Even me and my peers do this, and I’m an amateur actor/Dungeon Master far below Streep’s level. This is basic psychology/symbolism, not some profound mastermind thing.
The outfit Miranda casually put together really was gorgeous! It's super fall and floral, but with a pop of that beautiful blue belt. Really inventive too! I like how she just did it so effortlessly too, while half of her mind was on talking to Andy. Plus the movie didn't hype it or hold it up to emphasize it for the audience, it was all just NBD, we totally put together a killer outfit nonchalantly.

There are lots of people (like my mother) why select some neutral coloured SUV because they don't care about cars but the development of that one model cost millions and employed thousands of people to design and build. The unfortunate fact is that there are so many industries that people don't care enough about.
@@10293 The car analogy makes no sense. If the car only comes in three variants (which all look the same), the difference is not going to be the color or frame, but the mechanics and the interior. Comparing it to this scene where they're making an outfit is completely different because the outfit they're putting together has to be cohesive and unique (it's not going to be mass produced).
What bugs me about this scene is that most people know better than to show contempt for something their boss finds important. Andy didn't have to full-on embrace the fashion world, but she should have been more respectful

I finally understand this scene, people who think they have the moral high ground because they thrift and don't wear designer...their style is still influenced by big brands, cause they create the trends and it flows down the chain to be mass produced for the general public.

The monologue is perfection, but what I love most about this scene is that she just casually continues on with her expert selections and opinions of what is needed to complete the look, while delivering the monologue. Something so critical as to need her guidance and she just breezes through it multi-tasking.

This speech has a wonderful rhythm and flow with great writing. Streep pairs with it nicely and hits all the right notes flaunting her mastery of acting. It is perfection.
She's so real for this. Fashion is an art and a necessity that should be respected. Even Duluth work clothes are specifically designed for harsh manual labor and they are expensive because the fabric is THICK AF and lasts much longer. Fashion is the very stitches that holds humanity together.

In itself, this scene in the script was discarded, but Meryl Streep requested that it be restored. It's a monologue that went through many re-writing sessions, according to the scriptwriter. What Miranda mentions is purely fictitious, but she was trying to describe the trickle-down effect.
In Kramer vs Kramer, she also wrote most of her lines, especially that 'I am a mother' monologue in the court.
Meryl Streep is the greatest actor that lived. That subtle yet scary performance is brilliant. That mere snicker put fear in the whole room anticipating her reaction.

I think the big thing about this for me is that this is supposed to be a burn to Andi, but there is so much more to it than that. Her explaining everything like this shows that she is not just out to get at her, although I'm sure it was part of it, but it shows just how much she knows her work in mind-blowing detail. At the same time, she is effortly fashioning a dress for her line in seconds without so much as a thought and it looks great. She stresses just how far the industry goes so that Andi could have that cerulean blue sweater that she may have picked up from the clearance bin. That is a lot of powerful knowledge to have in that industry and that plus her soft tone as she eviscerates Andi while making dress that's fashionable in seconds is what I think ultimately makes her scary.
Man. That last dressing Meryl gave her at the end was so subtle yet absolutely brutal. Brilliant acting
As soul-crushing as this speech was, I think it shows that Miranda really does see Andy's potential and wants her to rise to it; she could have dismissed her from the room/her job immediately, she has no need to show off or make an example to the other people in the room (who are already completely cowed by her) and we've seen how when other people screw up she barely wastes a sentence on them. Taking the time to give Andy a brutal reality check suggests she does actually want Andy to be better, in contrast to the interview when she didn't waste a moment shooing Andy out when she thought she would be useless.
She did say she wanted to give a chance to the 'fat' girl in a later scene.
mzytryck, that and I also think Miranda has a deep narcissistic trait of keeping someone you feel is inferior around because you enjoy kicking them. Her form of “nurturing” someone might be the way that she loves and guides but it is damaging. I liked that we saw the softer sides of her throughout the movie though.

It was during Andy's interview when Andy was about to walk away, but then turned around and basically commanded Miranda's attention by explaining that she knew she didn't fit in, but was smart, hard working and willing to learn. That's why during that moment in the interview Miranda stopped reading her newspaper and started paying attention to what Andy was saying. At that moment, Miranda saw "herself" in Andy and wanted to give Andy her chance, probably just as someone once gave Miranda her chance when she was younger. That's why in this scene, she gives Andy a big reality check about the importance of the fashion industry. It is all to test Andy's resilience and willingness to learn. It is a way of Miranda indirectly asking Andy how important is the job that she has is to her.
Stephen Ritger exactly! She was extremely disappointed because Andy had immense skill for that job and could’ve been something great with Miranda. BUT she knew Andy wanted something different and didn’t neglect that fact which is why she ended it with saying he would be an idiot if he didn’t hire her.

I love this scene for so many reasons. The prime, of course, is that it's just so entertaining, so quotable and Meryl delivers it so impeccably.
But upon reflection, I really do think that this is actually an establishing scene for both Andy and Miranda. First, it really crystalizes Andy's naivete in terms of her attitude about working at Runway. Yes, Miranda is the one who eviscerates her, but clearly every single person in that room is shocked and insulted at Andy snorting about what is a meaningful part of their work, and serious business. Second, it makes it clear that Miranda is a big deal for a reason. I feel like up to this point you really just see Miranda being difficult and demanding without contextualizing how formidable she is within the industry itself.
She is in control the entire time, and despite being a terrible boss in an emotive sense, she clearly gets results. I think a lot of us have worked for people like this - I certainly have. And while I might not have fond feelings for them, I have to admit to respecting and being a bit in awe of them. It's a lot of work to have that kind of a presence.
Andy was trying to show how clever and better she was by making fun of the fashion industry.
Miranda proved her absolutely wrong by lengthily telling her the research and hard work that went into that particular cerulean sweater.
And to think Andy was a journalism graduate.
Miranda effectively told her, in such a long-winded manner, how utterly dumb she was. Clearly, she the journalist didn't do her homework.

I think the same goes for art in general. People often think that art is just a social accessory that has nothing to do with them and often dismisses art as unnecessary but are blithely unaware that everything that holds a person's sanity is art itself. Everything we own is governed by art. The clothes we wear, the houses we live in, the streets we walk on, movies we watch, the food we eat, every single thing around us is governed by art.
Without art there would be no advertisements to endorse companies, products, services that would reach thousands of markets which is the reason why there is production. But production without proper advertisement and marketing never reaches its target.
And really, what a sad thing it is that people dismiss art as nothing but trash, useless, a waste of time when in fact every single material that a person owns shouts self expression and that is art whether we like it or not.

As much as I appreciate this defence of the arts given how they're perenially subjected to budget cuts (or threats thereof), this seems like an answer to a question that nobody is asking. Few people would suggest in a globalized age surrounded by international, globalized art and media that the sum total of (visual) art, music, movies/tv, dance, etc., have no social value. For the very reasons you articulate, the 'art of the everyday' is invaluable and I think fairly universally appreciated by us proles.
What is more often attacked is high 'Art', particularly conceptual / abstract expressionist, which has far less social value - at least in the utilitarian sense, given the vanishingly small, hip, cultural vanguard that appreciates it. And likewise subject to attack is how this art can possibly be justified, given the millions of dollars typically spent on (frankly) farcically unoriginal works derivative of Duchamp from 100 years ago.

How she played this scene was incredible, but to find out she WROTE this scene blows my mind even more.

The best example of what a good writer and a good actress can do when they meet. It starts with a very smart, economical line, but that’s just the beginning. It then takes an actress like Streep to deliver it with equal economy and restraint. Streep is incredibly smart and makes impeccable choices when contemplating how to modulate her voice and what physical business to execute before, during, and after each word or pause. I sense that nothing is left to chance and that everything is a deliberate decision made after much thought and internal rehearsal. Despite the conscious exercise, the end result always looks fresh and spontaneous, unpredictable but in the end inevitable. That is the mark of a real professional.
I think the point of this scene is, Andy thinks fashion is silly and arbitrary, while Miranda presents a very intelectual approach to it, gives historical and aesthetic background. It's good tactics to make Andy, a smart girl, realise there is actually a knowledge and understanding involved in creating a look.

Andy had this roast coming. Since she came to the initial interview, she basically showed no concern for even learning about the place where she was looking for a job. She got the job and she still had the attitude of "I´m too good for this". I have zero sympathy for her character.

This is a great representation of someone who is not only passionate about their job but also knowledgeable about the industry to tell/teach some nobody the rules of engagement when it comes to selecting the tinniest of details. It's not *just* a belt; it's about the cut, how it looks on the model, the colour, the way it'll hang, and how it will fit in with the other pieces. Small teachings like this is important for anyone to learn on any job and I'm glad that they had a scene talking about it with such an important industry like fashion.
Details on artistic flair aside, the speech just comes off as arrogance to me in the face of apathy. Though passionate people tend to not be unable to act haughty in the face of indifference. You seem to be no different, especially since you're quick to write off someone as a nobody for not being knowledgeable of an industry's rules.

Andy doesn’t know or respect the industry, she doesn’t understand why it’s important to these people. That’s not apathy. No one likes it when outsiders come into your niche acting like everything you do is stupid and Miranda doesn’t like it either. It’s just basic respect.

In the end, if you have watched this movie, Andy "fired" and abandoned Miranda. If I were her, I would have left on 1st day. Andy was not-so-smart and wasted some months of her life away waiting on an old hag.

+mmm Well, if you watched the beginning during the interview, Andy is trying to be a writer and her options are this position or Auto Universe. And it's explained that a year with Miranda can lead to the ability to write for any magazine or paper - which was Andy's long-term employment goal. So 1. This was not meant to be long-term, but the stepping stone for her long-term career. 2. Miranda's message to the employer at the end of the film is the reason Andy got her new job!
If Andy hadn't stayed with the job for as long as she did, she'd probably be stuck being a waitress or working in retail, or in your words "waiting on someone, being someone's lackey."
The amount of talent in this scene is insane. At 0:42, you can see Andy being paralyzed by intimidation, regret and a slight sense of fear through her eyes. And then, Miranda's sudden head twist as she targets her gaze on Andy after the laugh - it was intimidating for the viewer although no words were spoken. Hathaway and Streep are dynamic and talented actresses!

The way she says “why is no one ready” at 0:02 reminds me of exactly how this lady used to talk when I did stage theater, she was the costume designer and she had this exact attitude. Great acting.
Stanley is an underappreciated part of this scene. The viewer feels so much just by him saying nothing. First the moment of "oh god why did you say this" to appreciation of Miranda's talent and expertise regardless of her being harsh, then moving to the backdrop of everything else happening
The thing about this iconic scene, is not just what Miranda is saying. But what the other actors are doing without talking. The faces, the eyes, the handling of the belts, and clothes. And it's not really about Andy. It's all about Miranda talking about a sweater and how from high fashion to the cheap second hand store are jobs it represents. Fashion people are always mocked, scorned, but they too create millions of jobs. And every so called educated, too cool rebel, SJW, hates fashion for no reason. But still wears the latest fashion. The irony is bewildering but hilarious. By the way, this scene is studied by how effortlessly it looks, but really it's a feat it was done at all. So many things are happening all at ones.
People don't hate fashion, people hate how fashion industry operates.. promoting wrong body image, animal treatment, model abuse, eating disorder, etc.

the point of this monologue is that if you act like you don’t care about fashion and just wear whatever you find that is cheap and practical, you’re not really opting out of the fashion industry you’re just opting out of the possibility of expressing yourself through your clothes and rather letting others choose for you.
