The fact that she's more concerned with how the divorce and gossip affects her daughters than how it affects her is honestly the most heartbreaking part. She's made herself invulnerable, but her daughters don't have that hard shell yet.
she's not really invulnerable, we can see it precisely in this scene. Se just learned how to supress her emotions for so long, until they blow out. No matter if she's concerned about herself or her daughters.. she *is vulnerable, there are things that affect her deeply
This scene always gets me. Even when she's broken and hurt Miranda still manages to be sarcastic and snarky. "Well if you speak to him and he decides to rethink then the divorce then fetch away. We're both very fetching so, go fetch."
To me the best part is Miranda's tiny smile and laugh as she asks "why would we do that?" When Andi offers to cancel her evening. No matter that her life is falling apart Miranda can't concieve of not "doing her job," and expects the same from Andi.
This had to be one of the greatest scenes in the movie. You see the real side of Miranda and a vulnerable side. No make-up and bloodshot eyes. Just brilliant!
Meryl's credit is much-deserved in this scene, but I'd love to point out how amazingly subtle Anne's performance was as well. Her slight shift from sympathetic to shock at 3:14 was perfect, as was the knowing smile at the end as if to say "I should've known better". She really conveys how much she "gets" Miranda by this point. Brilliant acting by both ladies.
This was the first genuine human moment that Miranda had in the entire movie. Andy saw the facade crack as she lamented how everybody thinks she's too career-focused so what does she choose to focus on? Her career. It shows that Miranda really IS just her persona and that shock she feels is what helps Andy realize this isn't the life she wants.
If you look at the back and forth scenes between andy and miranda, you can tell miranda at her raw state. Notes the visual differences of the seats behind them.
What I really love about this scene is that Miranda let's her guard down for just a moment and shows Andy that above all, she is a person. Underneath all the fierceness and glam, she has her own personal issues that she's dealing with. And when Andy tries to show pity, Miranda quickly straightens herself and tells Andy to do her job as if to say, "I don't need your pity". Miranda is a very strong and confident woman. I can respect that.
She also makes these problems for herself. Notice that earlier in the movie we are told that her husband is a hedge fund guy. In other words, a Wall Street guy. A guy like that is usually not a cuddly, emotional person. Wall Street guys tend to be very insecure about their status, and most are threatened if someone, anyone upstages them. And it seemed that Miranda continually upstaged her very successful husband. What Miranda needs is to connect with men who will be there for her, and who are comfortable enough to play second fiddle to their wives. But she probably finds those men not attractive at all. So she does herself in. She's her own worst enemy.
she is not just 'strong' and 'confident', she is dealing with the issues that all the highly intelligent humans who choose the path of power and business and ego deal with. But yeah, beneath all that she is a person, of course. Albeit a deeply unhappy, frustrated, scared, controlling and dominating one with a lot of psychological issues...
Miranda eats and breathes her job around the clock and she's very good at her job. She doesn't have time to wallow in personal details about her life or anyone. So it's also not a surprise that her personal love relationships keep falling apart. The scene can be interpreted in so many different ways.
I read an article about this since it's the 10th anniversary... Apparently Meryl had two scenes put into the screenplay- this one and the withering dismissal about Andie's blue sweater. Both are essentially monologues- Meryl just giving a Master Class for three minutes but they couldn't be more different in tone and attitude. She is simply in a league of her own...
I haven’t read the book, but I think it tends to portray her character as shrewd and ruthless when it comes to business, whereas Meryl wanted to show how incredibly smart Miranda actually is; the ‘cerulean monologue’ is not only a great performance, it’s incredibly accurate - when haute couture designers create their collections, the mood boards feature colours that are often defined by whatever Pantone has chosen as its Colour of The Year - it’s no coincidence the 2000 COTY was cerulean.
This movie does an excellent job of illustrating the complexity of relationships without having to devote too much screen time to them. It does two things. One, it adds to the character development. Two, it keeps the movie charging at a brisk pace. I am a guy and not even the least bit into fashion. I can appreciate this film because it has so many themes that can be applied to real life. There is a lot to relate to. We’ve all had to figure out the balance between work and personal life.
Meryl Streep's acting was genius in this scene....that subtle shift from icy woman in control to the fragile vulnerable woman showing just a tiny bit of a soft side to Andrea and then the mask of perfection comes back on and she's the queen again. I thought it was clever that they chose to do this seen with her NOT in perfect makeup. Up until this point she has been this perfectly controlled, perfectly put together ice queen as she calls it and in this moment, she is completely vulnerable...even without her mask of perfection. It was in this moment that she won my respect and the Golden Globe for Best Actress.
I know I'm VERY late to the game.. just saw this today.. You're so right. Miranda recoiled at the thought of being pitied or patronized. Well, here's the thing. One needs to teach their kids that the world doesn't revolve around them. I think Miranda failed here as a parent. She may have been very very good at her job, but as a parent "hmm" I don't know. A parent needs to learn how to say "no" to their child every once in a while. You can't go on bending backwards just to give your kids everything. And make your coworkers or colleagues run all around town just because your kid wanted something that is almost nearly impossible to get. I for one would've been pissed if I'd been asked to do something like that. I would've almost handed Miranda my resignation because I would think that she's gone a bit too far. poor Andy to get the next unpublished copy of Harry potter books for Miranda's kids. And poor Andy had to do some quick thinking on how to go about getting it which is nearly impossible. This shows that you're spoiling your kids. And when they grow up into adults, they will act very very entitled. Already, I could sense it that Miranda's girls had attitude issues. It will get a lot worse when they grow and become adults if they are not properly raised in their young and formative years.

I know people usually say Miranda doesn’t want her pity but maybe she isn’t used to getting any pity or empathy in her field so she doesn’t really know how to process it. She built herself from the ground up. She grew up poor.
I think this scene is really when Andy decides that she doesn’t want to be like Miranda. Is she successful, powerful, and an extremely smart and confident woman? Absolutely, but she is 100% career obsessed, no one she works with particularly likes her they all just fear her she’s pushed everyone away so she can be this strong in her career, I couldn’t imagine what being married to her is like as she seems like someone who would never show a more vulnerable and loving side and would be cold in a relationship and she screws over Nigel one of her best and most loyal employees so we know that she really doesn’t care about who she hurts as long as it benefits her.
For those of you wondering about why didn't Meryl Streep won an Oscar for this movie....she was the early frontrunner and everyone was expecting for her to win.. Until Mirren, you know, the Academy lovesss to award royal figures..
But can you imagine being married to Miranda Priestly? It would be an absolute nightmare. This is also a great example of the character difference between these two - when Miranda suffers a loss, she shows some vulnerability and Andy responds with kindness and understanding. Half the movie Andy is completely destroying her personal life, and Miranda couldn't give less of a shit. People who idolize Miranda really seem to not grasp what an awful person she really is.
Hard to feel sorry for her when she’s such an incredibly selfish person who looks down on everyone, like anyone who is not her is to be used and discarded. She might have earned Andy’s respect, but that only lasted five minutes and she had to drag Andy down to her level to earn it.
I would love it if the press referred to me as the Snow Queen hahahaha I mean Miranda knows exactly what type of person she is. What does she expect? And why does she care so much what others think.
This is very sad, to live a life met with unending disappointment. She doesn't have any hope in her life. Miranda really needs Jesus! MS knocks this outta the park. Have a nice day :)
I love how we see a brief human side of Miranda at times- and then she puts the wall back up and snaps back to her bitchy self. If she was just a one note terrible boss the whole time, it would make the movie unwatchable.
I have perfected my fake accent already. Don’t know what I’m supposed to do with the banana though? I just want to punch!punch!punch! Is laughing allowed? What do I even say? Why HELLO there, baguette? Would you like to meet my crossaints? Do I introduce myself? Like in a job interview? Hello! Here is my foot! And then what am I supposed to do? Crack some jokes? It’s very awkward knowing how it will end. With gunshot. What are my last words? Oh I know. I will just scream MILK loudly

I didn’t even notice this video was slowed down until I read the comments, I feel so dumb lol
She’s the female version of Vince Lombardi
"That's all"
Snoop dog?
Can’t have a party without him
Well they need some weed obviously
songs name please ?
I love how we see a brief human side of Miranda at times- and then she puts the wall back up and snaps back to her bitchy self. If she was just a one note terrible boss the whole time, it would make the movie unwatchable.
If seen a vid of the actual Ana winters and quite honestly I wouldn't care to be around a women like that.
*Anna Wintour
This movie made me decide to never again buy a copy of Vogue. Anna Wintour is insufferable.
Meryl Streeps idea to not have make up on her face for this scene to make her even more so look different. =)
Madeline
I have perfected my fake accent already. Don’t know what I’m supposed to do with the banana though? I just want to punch!punch!punch! Is laughing allowed? What do I even say? Why HELLO there, baguette? Would you like to meet my crossaints? Do I introduce myself? Like in a job interview? Hello! Here is my foot! And then what am I supposed to do? Crack some jokes? It’s very awkward knowing how it will end. With gunshot. What are my last words? Oh I know. I will just scream MILK loudly
Meryl Streep is BOSS!!!.... Katherine Hep...who????
Meryl's credit is much-deserved in this scene, but I'd love to point out how amazingly subtle Anne's performance was as well. Her slight shift from sympathetic to shock at 3:14 was perfect, as was the knowing smile at the end as if to say "I should've known better". She really conveys how much she "gets" Miranda by this point. Brilliant acting by both ladies.
