Has anyone noticed what a talented guitar player he was in addition to his other talents. He had a real feel for the blues. I am sure any of the blues greats would have been honored to jam with him.
He was the greatest in every way.
It’s a fairly basic blues riff he is playing! Not saying he can not play, as he is pretty accomplished, but certainly not in the league if the greats.
This is not Delta blues, which is why some don't appreciate it. It is very much in the percussive genre of Mississippi Hill Country Blues. I wouldn't say it's textbook Hill Country, but Tupelo isn't the heart of the style. Elvis learned to play the blues on the porch of a place called Mayhorn's Grocery where bluesmen would sit and play and jawbone with one another. Elvis didn't always even bring his own guitar; he was there to watch, listen, and enjoy. (And the kids in his school once cut all his guitar strings, so he didn't take it around as much.)
It's much more in that genre than Delta blues. Most modern day guitarists are far more familiar with the Delta style. This genre remained almost an open secret until relatively recently. A minimum of chords, but with the action more on the right hand than the left. He absolutely slayed this number. The passion emerged from his fingers just as it elsewhere poured out of his larynx.

@@iancrockert5110 Reed wrote it, as far as I know. (Sometimes they put their wives names on stuff. I dunno what it says on the label.) But it's a blues standard guitar progression, as old as the blues itself. He wrote it, but so did . . . pretty much everyone! You'll find this in hundreds of songs, so similar. But this is much preferred by many because it's like going into an art store and buying your favorite blank blues canvas upon which to paint. I think Reed was very happy with all the covers. Lotta money, and I guess it feels good to have plugged into the main artery of the blues.
