He deserved to be in the top 3. The judges got that right and another pic, however in this challenge Phebe should have been chosen over Kimberly's work.
I'm addicted to these shows! And am I the only one who is totally stoked that "Dolores Umbridge" from Harry Potter is married to "Carson" from Downton Abbey??? For me this is just the coolest ever!
I love Frank! He is such a major part of the show! Why is he gone now? He is so free and fun while the other art judges are so serious! The sitter is a wonderful lady and lovely to paint!
Wonderful program here. Love it. The judges picks: I agree somewhat, and disagree as well. The celebrity sitter IMELDA Staunton was lovely to observe and listen to. Seems like a charming lady. Cheers to the awesome ARTISTS and all involved!
Something the show doesn't address is how the semifinal painters choose which easel they will use to paint the portrait, given that with so many competitors it's quite a different view and angle of the subject from the center to the sides. I wonder if the artists worked it out themselves, or if the show assigned a particular easel to each artist? As for the finalists chosen, I think they got it right. For me there was one clear winner, and it was the young man who was called back after not winning his heat. His portrait captured the subject's likeness the best. It wasn't even close. I'll be rooting for him in the final . . .
This is my fav semifinal episode in the series. Great results from the artists and a really strong showing from across the board. Plus the roses are gorgeous…remind me of the museum portrait Christian was commenting on in season 2 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
I've just started watching but I'm sooo happy that they decided to include Liam - I felt he had won his heat and was so disappointed he wasn't continuing on. Can't wait to finish this episode. Edit: Finished watching now and it was a wonderful episode. Loved Liam's portrait!!!
I think the judges got it right with the 3 finalists. I'm glad they put Kimberly through. She didn't nail the likeness, but she captured the actress in many ways throughout the painting and took the challenge of painting her in full.
No really not. The face she painted was an insult. It made her (model) look like Frankenstein hacked her faces in pieces and it was sewed together all wrong in the painting. This is a competition about portrait artists, so least one would expect, is that they can draw a face.
@@endlessstudent3512 Agreed. Originality should be rewarded but likeness shouldn't be sacrificed. Someone out there can paint in that style while still capturing likeness, I'm sure of it.
what a lovely sitter! and brilliant actress. it's such a juxtaposition of her also being one of the most hated if not most hated characters in cinematic history.
"there are a number of people that got away" yeah, because you picked the WRONG ONES ... these judges are just ridiculous, but Liam did deserve to go through so at least they rectified that error
It would have been nice (toward the sitter) if they all painted her from head to boots (lol) since she really dressed up for the occasion and wanted to made a statement with her boots. I loved the background and I know that for some artists, it could be kind of tricky to paint it without making something that might distract from the main subject. But still...Also, she kind of looks like a sister of keitel Harvey and Tracey Breaks ;-P
Not to spoil it for others, I will only say that-IN MY OPINION-only one of the final three nailed it and I could see MAYBE doing a major commission--that has apparently already happened.
Would have chosen the more classical painter over Kimberly. Her technique is lively but her images look unfinished and a bit off to me. Agree with the other 2 selections. Interesting how a few couldn't capture a likeness at all in this round.
Liam is great, the charcoal by Garett is great, not sure I’m a fan of Kimberly but they’re looking for out of the ordinary as well as the ability to capture likeness.
Why are they always looking for different instead of best skills? However I love these. One they called muddy was beautiful. I loved the impish one best.
What do you consider "best" skills? Is it following dogma from the legacy of art or do you have a willingness to accept new and different? As for capturing likeness, there's a famous quote from Picasso when Gertrude Stein commented that her portrait didn't look like her, Picasso commented "but it will".
The two men were worthy finalists but the woman I think is only in there because they love her unique technique. She was far too ambitious today and there was no attempt at a likeness at all. By trying to fit everything in, she did nothing well. I love her self portrait, but nothing she’s done in the competition warrants her being in the final.
I think the artist's really struggled this time; not sure why. The face on only two looked correct to me. Liam's and the one the sitter picked. The artist's really had issues with her eyes. I'm not thrilled with the judge's picks other than Liam's the faces are just not her at all.
Geez, guess my husband and I needed a cocktail for tonight’s viewing as we questioned the results of most canvases in likeness and appeal. We always appreciate these posts, however, and are committed to anticipating the finals with positivity in our souls for better results.
Gawd no! I wouldn't watch it with that character blasting through like an elephant in a china shop! I highly doubt he's sensitive enough to understand art anyway...
kimberly's the most undeserving out of the final 3 and you can't change my mind. Her likeness was way off, even if her style's out of the ordinary it just doesn't qualify as unique. It should've been phoebe standing there, her painting was really a masterpiece!
I agree with the two guys, but Kimberly...oh dear. She made Imelda look like a lumpy Cabbage Patch Kid, as she did with Freddie in her heat. Horrific! What the heck is she seeing? She seems like such an intelligent and personable woman. I don't get it. New glasses, maybe?
I really love Kimberly's work and was sincerely hoping she and Garett would make it because of their unique approaches. I couldn't decide on the 3rd artist, but agree Liam captured Imelda's likeness well and his painting looks fresh.
I know she isn’t Umbridge. But the boots made me think of her controlling the picture and making it look unique but ridiculous. Okay so not her fault, the “idea” came from the judges. But it makes no difference if what is chosen doesn’t make sense in the composition.
There was IMO only one rendering of Imelda that actually looked like her and caught her expression. That was the charcoal drawing. One other had beautiful colour and showed her in her element, with the boots. And she chose one I was baffled by. Welcome to Art. There's no accounting for taste ;}
We are not able to see the paintings as they really are, but through a lens that flattens them and sometimes distorts color as well. I don't always agree with the judges, but maybe, I'm not seeing the real work as it is, just a duplicate. I had four favorites, and they chose three of them.
35:42 and 35:54 an 36:07 really must have hated the model...made her a misformed witch....too much Harry Potter watched, eh? I mean rally, that is plain mean, making her look like Frankensteins monster. I admire the actress for keeping her face strait upon such insults :(. At least 36:15, 36:31, 37:19 and especially 36:43 made a fair and honest attempt at a likeness.
There's a long history of artists relying on mechanical devices such as the camera obscura during the Renaissance, photographs since the late 1800s and now phones and tablets. Do you believe that Renaissance art should be discredited because much of it was painted using the mechanical assistance of the camera obscura?
LIAM, by and far gave an exceptional portrait…….full of life , energy, and spark …..an exceptional quirky likeness that sings…..
Loved it when they brought him back!

@@gurucarcarI agree totally!
Liam's painting is wonderful. I love the clarity of expression. Even the roses shined.
Too many of the paintings were muddled.
Glad to see Liam brought back. His earlier painting was fabulous.
Kimberly's work is extraordinary!

Oh. Liam Vickers' painting was brilliant.
that's Liam Dickinson.

Well, he stepped down. I guess between these and Landscape Artist of the Year he’d had enough.

Liam by a country mile. Such a talented young man.

Very brilliant artists. Congratulations to all.
Liam's painting reminds me of Christian Hook's art, but without the unique elements that elevate Christian's
I truly love this competition and the creativeness of each artist. It’s sad the the judges are such snobs!
Utter nonsense!
Wow! ☺️❤️❤️❤️
I’m so inspired with their artwork.☺️❤️❤️❤️

agree, it's infuriating they celebrate extremely mediocre "different" instead of extremely talented artists
For the first time, I love all 3 finalists
Thought the centaurs had their way with Dolores Umbridge

'Centaurs'? they were half-horse and half-human creatures from Greek mythology.

Liam's was the best painting. The washed painting made the sitter look like a Cabbage Patch doll.
Does everyone use oils for their portraits here??

some of these are really yikes 😬
I was hoping the pencil drawing would of had some colors, especially the red flowers. The artist brought all those pastels but barely used them.

The 35:42 one is just ghastly - I'm shocked they didn't comment on the far eye. it looks like a bite was taken out of the side of her head!!
38:15 "this is a really great style" nah, it's simply not, she's a fraud
Kimberly's style reminds me of sand painting. The RUclips kind, not the Buddhist.........
I agreed with both men artists, but the female artist was awful didn't look like her at all ,just the wellys
