loved the discussion for the shortlisted artists in this episode. the producers do not shy away from showing some controversy and I love that the presenters voice their opinions! Absolutly fantastic program!
Any show that shies away from any/all hard discussion, disagreement, and/or debate, does a disservice to educating, inspiring, and/or encouraging audiences to think outside the box and beyond their limitations. In this show, ART is the topic, and therefore it is MORE SO critical that it practices what it preaches, otherwise runs the risk of becoming a religion full of censorship and dogma. I love and respect this show for keeping the judges and presenters discussion raw and uncensored.
Art is so very subjective. I really feel for the judges. I think they are doing a fine job when faced with so many superb portraits, and having the weight of all the Rueben’s, Turners, Gauguins, and daVincis behind them. It’s hard to look to the future, to consider the direction a talent might go. It’s hard to consider the direction art itself might go. I commend their choices each episode even when I dislike the art. Bravo.
I see what the judges saw in Gabriella's work. It was also my favorite piece. It's so different, sensitive, and melancholic. I wish more people could see (or feel) what I feel. She was my favorite from the start. There's many wonderful painters, but only few of them can do something truly different (without it being wacky or too kitsch). It's not easy to find such talent.
Contrary to popular opinion here, I agree with the judges. I liked Maggie's portrait the best and it was my pick for the overall winner also. My preference is a portrait be more than a detailed likeness, otherwise I would settle for a photograph. Maggie's portrait gave an expression, a creative interpretation that highlights that it is indeed art.
I agree with you. Maggie's portrait gave an expression, and a creativity, but I just didn't see enough of the inner likeness of the sitters personality. But that's just my personal opinion. I agree with the fact that we should embrace a new style and modern way of portraits, as well as not just choosing somebody because they make a trendy portrait.
I love this program. I was a journalist/photo journalist for many years and I "see" the split second expression my camera would hunt and I'm always surprised when the artists work from a very still, posed setting and then surprised when they get the inner energy in there anyway. I am also surprised at how moved I am by the entire process.
I'd love to see a painting celebrating the art of Polunin as a dancer posed on the diagonal in the air, a double cabriole devant, It's the magic of a danceur.
Er hat Augen so tiefgründig wie der Marianengraben, ich glaube, ich hätte ihn gar nicht malen können, weil ich mich in diesen Tänzeraugen verloren hätte.
Serve is intense, even in repose, which the portrait does not communicate. He is edgy, with immense energy contained. The self portrait of the artist, however, is excellent.
I like this show but have no doubt, it would have been a much better show right from the beginning, if only the judges had half the courage of Joan Bakewell. We would have seen some real head to head talent then, not this let's go for the new flavour of the month deal, pawning it off as moving forward...
Of the three portraits of Maggie, they chose the worst , in my opinion. The other two were far better likenesses and they were better than the portrait of Sergei. I do like Charlie`s work though.
Interesting to see how the winner painted Dr.Maggie Aderin-Pocock very realistically in shades of black and white instead of her real skin tone, its a nice painting and this may not sound good but the painting would have probably been even stronger if the skin tone wasn't depicted in black and white
I don't know how people in the comments are so quick to judge these paintings. Having an art degree I can see if something is too referential, has wrong proportions or composition. But i have no idea which painting was objectively the best, each had some nice qualities and some problems. Overall this episode was on a weaker side so I think that's why they picked something that's at least fresh, she also caught the likeness well.
What an absolute disappointment!!! The judges are back to picking the most juvenile portraits again. Oh, how I wish the producers would replace these judges for new ones with fresh eyes and better taste.
This show needs different categories. It's really not fair to compare a realistic painting alongside a cartoonist painting. All the artists are talented. They need to be judged properly.
I am so disappointed in the judges choice as the winner. I wanted to scream at the tv. I just saw others work with so much more talent. It’s a No for me.
Okay, I love the gray portrait, Simplicity and the composition made it more focused and I felt the intelligence of the sitter. But I also understand why you don't like it. It's all in the eyes of the beholder I guess.
I don't understand why when they have a sitter they are allowed to take a photograph.and paint from that .why not just give them a photo of a celebrity
You can paint with a real life sitter and still have a photograph for reference. Sometimes the sitter moves and you completely loose your angle, or maybe (like myself) you have a terrible memory and don't want to be walking up to the model every few minutes to look at their face and eyes, or maybe they have bad vision (also like myself) and can't wear glasses or contacts. Let's not be so judgemental and narrow minded about using tools to make art. The old masters would have used photography if they had it at their disposal.
It is only open to residents of Britain, Channel Islands, Ireland or Falklands who have been living there for at least one year prior to submitting an entry.
I know art is subjective, but I could not agree with 2 of the three choices today and the winner. One had no likeness at all, the other used technology to such a degree that it completely changed the depicted persons skin tone (who perhaps shied away from the challenge of painting a darker skin tone?). I think the judges tried to hard to find novelty in this edisode but without substance.
I think smartphones, tablets, etc should be banned. My A Level students were not allowed them. The only use of photography was for research not for execution of a piece. They are just copying!! Direct observation sorts the wheat from the chaff and an artist from a technician.
Perhaps you should prevent your students from using manufactured art supplies so they have the experience of grinding pigments and using them to create their own paints, pastels, graphite, etc...maybe they should make their own papers too while they're at it. I'm sure this would enhance their "artistic expression".
If it were me judging I would've put my vote behind any 3 from those who painted David and the lady who did such a superb job with the necklace piece on Dr. Maggie. Nearly fell off my chair when they declared the shortlist and the winner.
loved the discussion for the shortlisted artists in this episode. the producers do not shy away from showing some controversy and I love that the presenters voice their opinions! Absolutly fantastic program!
I fully agree. Very well said indeed.
The judges are TOTALLY WRONG THIS TIME…
Oh well. Thanx, Joan, for speaking up for all of us.
Joan should have been a judge!
@@dalesmithson5454 I agree!
Not all of us.

There are so many impressive portraits in this episode and I would have been faced with quite a challenge choosing a winner.
Especially the three that painted David Olusoga-- complete knockouts all three paintings!
Anyone else think the judges are off their rocker on the 3 semifinalists and the winner??
So much other talent there today.

Thank you, always. That's just a so amazing show!!!
A great group of very talented artists-- every portrait was just brilliant in their own beautiful way. Congratulations to Gabriella!
Thankyou a million times over.
Wow never heard Joan speak up like that. Nice to see actually
The winner was very gd. But most of them were too
I agree with Joan on this... they did not pick the 3 best for the short list at all...
Gabriella creates a different realm with the portraiture, looking forward to see what's coming next.

No me tearing up everytime Tai says something is a “magical bit of work”.❤
Both of Charlies paintings really touched me.
This time I disagreed with the judges.
All of the artists were so talented today.
Her work truly feels unique and original
I love this show. I always learn so much and expand my ideas for painting.
Sometimes I just have to shout NO.
Haha, I get what you are saying.
Serve is intense, even in repose, which the portrait does not communicate. He is edgy, with immense energy contained. The self portrait of the artist, however, is excellent.
Joan asks Kathleen, "Are you afraid of not being trendy?" 42:04 Kathleen shouts at Joan, "I'm afraid of YOU !". Joan replies, "Good".
Joan is my favorite, she is cool
What's with the judges this time???
This time?
I wonder if they keep the results of other heats in mind and are planning ahead to a more interesting semifinal.
Wow they are all good 😊
Ty😊
LOL 'we'll have to whip you into shape" - i wouldnt have said that to the scientist sitter... for obvious reasons

“I wish I could paint like that!” I love the variety of styles, but how to pick one?!
Can I ask please? Is this the latest season? I've already watched the whole 3 seasons, 1, 2& 3. I've missing a lot of episodes coz it was scattered
NO, NO, NO!!!! not really sure what they were thinking...there were a lot better pieces than the one chosen

poor choice this time, i don't understand the judges on this one
I really like it…but…I would have picked Charlie’s.
For me, there's always one 1 agree with,1 that I don't agree with and 1 that I'm on the fence
What an absolute disappointment!!! The judges are back to picking the most juvenile portraits again.
Oh, how I wish the producers would replace these judges for new ones with fresh eyes and better taste.
Agree. Maybe rotating judges. For a new outlook, fresh eyes.
this time the only person that I hoped would not win did
how ???
Hugs from Naples FL 🌈
Sometimes I am so insensed by these judges to picking out the screwed up mess as the best representation!
36:48 Very Wedha art.
This show needs different categories. It's really not fair to compare a realistic painting alongside a cartoonist painting. All the artists are talented. They need to be judged properly.
The (judges) got it wrong again...what am I missing?
They always seem to choose the worst ones that lacked finesse and the essence of the artist.
I wish the judges were more mindful of the taxpayers who will be looking at the prize commission.
I am so disappointed in the judges choice as the winner.
I wanted to scream at the tv. I just saw others work with so much more talent. It’s a No for me.
Not a good choice from my point of view as well!
Poor judging this time. Can't believe they chose a gray on gray portrait as unique.
Okay, I love the gray portrait, Simplicity and the composition made it more focused and I felt the intelligence of the sitter. But I also understand why you don't like it. It's all in the eyes of the beholder I guess.

I hope it’s not Gabriela😳
How to get into the #PortraitArtistOfTheYear from india!
They all seem to be brits?
It is only open to residents of Britain, Channel Islands, Ireland or Falklands who have been living there for at least one year prior to submitting an entry.

Lynn and Amy were robbed!
Awful decision.
No. Time to replace these judges. They have been a part of this program TOO long. Time to get a different prospective,
Какая же дрянь этот талантливый танцор в жизни, продал совесть за крутые бабки. Жаль что художники, пишущие его портрет, этого не знают...
I think smartphones, tablets, etc should be banned. My A Level students were not allowed them. The only use of photography was for research not for execution of a piece. They are just copying!! Direct observation sorts the wheat from the chaff and an artist from a technician.
Smartphones and tablets have always been allowed. This a portrait competition, not art school.

no nooooo
Boo
No me gusto
No.
NO
Wrong as always !
Every time I hear it I cringe. NOT hone in CORRECT: hoMe in.
Actually, "hone in" is correct
Both are words. Depends on context.
It is a pity Sergey didn't show his tatoos
Anyone else think the judges are off their rocker on the 3 semifinalists and the winner??
