I've been looking forward to this review. You're still my go to when it comes to reviewing primes for Fujifilm. I'm thinking about replacing my main video lens (XC15-45 F/3.5-5.6) with this Viltrox 13mm F/1.4 so this review really helps.
Great review and amazing photos, as always.
I can't wait to try this lens, love the focal length and also that fast aperture!
What a great time to be Fuji shooter! This beats the Rokinon for me, heck I would say it beats even Fuji's own 16 1.4 because the price is way lower
The best review I've found on this lens, exactly what I needed to see... Thanks...
I'd love to see the vitrox 13mm f1.4 vs sigma 16mm f1.4 comparsion.
especially for selfie and vlogging purposes.
Great to see you do a review again Andrew! Hope you and Denae are doing well!
Sweet video mate! I just love the big colours and big sky of your neck of the woods.
Looks like a solid lens man. Cheers for taking the time to do the review!
Ohh.. and where have I seen those puppies before??!!
Wow, the overall quality of your videos, Andrew, are nothing less than majestic. Crisp clear voice, compelling background music, smart narrative flow and respect to the viewer make your page a stellar choice for people, lke me, eager to sort out pending questions before buying photo gear.
As for this particular review on the Vitrox 13mm 1.4, here are some of my remarks:
Who wants a super high wide lens? Someone who already has a standard and a portrait lens. Not for street photography. For this, portability and closer focal length are the main check points.
For landscape, architecture and night skies? Bingo!
In this realm this Viltrox 13mm would be my logical choice since its weight would not be an issue once iddle on a tripod. The price factor, compared to the native Fujis, as you underline, sets the deal.
For video, although not my favorite focal length, I'm impressed with its almost zero breathing. It may mean nothing special for most but professional videographers know that to yield such technical accomplishment one would need to pay 20 times + more for a cine lens capable of zero breathing.
Given its price, this Viltrox would widen up positively the array of options to any serious videographer.
great review, as always! thx!
Cool to see you back :)
Note, aside from the two Fuji “native” lenses you mentioned for shooting wide angle, there is also my beloved (and often forgotten) 14mm f2.8
Ooofs!!! This looks pretty good honestly, especially for the price that Viltrox typically sells for. Hope it comes to the UK soon :D
Your content is as amazing and inspirational as always. Really makes me want to get out and shoot!
Thanks! It's all about getting out and shooting. Reviews are just an excuse.
I have the Rokinon 12mm, which was my first Fuji lens love it still love it... but doing underwater photo, the manual ring is not avaliable in my housing so I was starting thinking about buying the new AF version, but when Viltrox announced that lens, I decided to wait for avaliability!
Great to see you back! I think I'll have to invest in this lens....PS loving the Cameron Diaz hair! :D
Lovely dogs and kids. Thanks for the video!
Killer photos/videos Andrew!
Thanks, my friend!
Nice to see you again!
Wait until you try the new 18mm from Fuji, perfect corner to corner from 1.4 and LM + WR :)
Hello, nice video! Would you recommend this Viltrox 13mm 1.4 or a second hand Fujinon 16mm 1.4 if you had to choose only one? Thank you
So, I have a question about this lens and Fuji 16mm f1.4.
If you were to choose between a brand new Viltrox 13mm and USED Fuji 16mm f1.4 (which would still cost more), which one would you pick?
(I can't really afford a brand new Fuji 16mm.)
Nice colours! Do you use a certain recipe? Or is it done later in raw?
I tried the new Fuji 18mm f1.4 LM WR, focus in video is decent, image quality is great. But the big problem is motor noise on video. It has linear motor but I don’t understand how loud this lens is. I tried both external microphone and internal microphone, motor noise keep coming to video. Sadly I returned because of that sound issue.
Ever since I watched a highlight reel of the still relevant The Cranes Are Flying on youtube, with it's moving searching. flying camera, (1961!) I was wondering just how they managed these overwhelming scenes with film cameras, keeping everything in focus. I knew they were using very wide lenses which gave them great depth of field, and that early film format, (ala live television dramas from the same period) automatically cropped edge distortion. I wondered, especially if I chose to shoot video and also do a final edge crop to match, what lens I would use. Naturally the GoPro style cameras are a real possibiilty for this, but this is the first lens on Fuji that makes me think it's the one. Thanks for the upload, Conan.
I just got my 23mm 1.4wr last week, you have to try one man! The close focus is bananas.
Mine is defective, and Viltrox won’t replace it. Under warranty btw. What gives?
Curious about when yu do the comparison, add in the manual rokinon/ samyang 12mm. As far as sharpness
I cannot wait to get my hands on this lens. I keep checking to get the email " Shipped" how well does it work with the IBIS. Seems like the samyang 12mm AF lens has some issues with it?
I have the 18 mm 1.4 by Fuji and I love it! 🤙
The image quality is just 🤯 mind blowingly perfect
But is not silent on video sadly.
@@ferhatmesut mine IS...
Great honest review. Sounds amazing but The only true test for me would be how accurate and consistent the AF is? I have had huge issues with both the Fuji 14mm & 16f1.4 30% of the images i take for my fast pace events are soft or completely out of focus! The newer 18mmf1.4 however is a lot better getting probably 95% but this is the million dollar question for me, the AF.
Nice video!!! If You had to choose between the Samyang 12 mm AF VS the Viltrox 13 mm which one would have been? I´m looking for a decent wide-angle lens without breaking the bank that gives me a decent quality. All the best
Nice vídeo as always. Obviously Viltrox tried hard to up their game with this lens and it is mighty impressive in feel. I think most people see it as an improvement on the Samyang 12mm and overall, it is the first third party lens to challenge Fuji on every level. At 420 grams though, it IS relatively heavy. I said my Fuji 14mm to get the Viltrox and that was a good decision. The 16mm f2.8 is a joy to use, a lens to put in the bag either as a complement to say the superb Fuji 33mm f1.4 or as part of a lighter combo or street. Fuji's new 18mm f1.4 is an optical class of its own perhaps, and a touch lighter than the Viltrox, but if you want to have fun with an ultrawide this Viltrox is a delight.
What about ND FILTER mount possibility in this lens?
Andrew, thanks for the review. How would you compare it to the Zeiss 12mm that you settled on but weren't too excited about as the ultra-wide lens of choice for x-mount?
I’d love to from Andrew on this, too. Cost aside, the Viltriox 13mm f1.4 or Zeiss Touit 12mm f2.8?
Aaaaand it’s half the price of native glass. Nice review. I really like your music selection too.
I found the little Fuji F2/2.8 primes great for video with the exception of the 35mm f2. When I got that lens, I was really disapointed by the focus hunting and breathing.
I have it! Wonderful! Have you tried Sigma 56 1.4?
Just received mine 2 days ago. Took a few shots with my xt3. AF was so fast, image quality is superb and built like a tank. I thought size was big,
not for me. Just a little longer than my 56 mm f1.2. Will be using this a lot.
The 18 is my favorite but I'll get this 13
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. What a great price for such a lens. Im not sure why fuji has yet to make a fast wide angle lens.
Great video, this lens definitely has me intrigued. I'm currently using an adapted canon efs 10-18mm, and it does the trick, but I'm looking for something a bit better at a lower price than the xf 10-24. Would you recommend this for architectural/real estate type photography, or do you think it's a bit too tight for that at 13mm?
Those puppies just made me blow my bank account!
I hope Viltrox will update the 23mm soon with a clicked aperture ring and improve the fringing and vignetting on it.
I bought the 23, it failed weeks later, and Viltrox won’t give me the time of day about their 1 year warranty. So far, my wonderful 13mm works perfectly (2 months old). Buyer beware.
I haven't even finished watching the video...and don't currently own a Fuji...I'm just glad to see you posting twice in a week! :)
:) No FUJI!? What are you shooting with these days?
@@AndrewGoodCamera I'm "forcing" myself into the one camera one lens thing. I have a Leica Q...and really like it! I did this in part to curb my g.a.s. but not sure it's working lol.
@@stevemphoto Ooh. I mean, if you're just going to have one, that's a beautiful choice.
I have it on my xt-4 and it's ridiculus how Viltrox do amazing for a resonable price... i going to buy also the 56 1.4 and hope for a zoom in te future
Thanks a lot, Andrew for another great review! I am wondering if this Viltrox could replace the old Samyang 12mm f2 for Astrophotography?? but you won‘t have an opinion on that probably, as that‘s not the kind of photography you do, right? Thank you.
Yeah sorry. I'm not much into astro.
@@AndrewGoodCamera all good, thanks for your reply though!
March 25 2022 - I have searched Ebay, Amazon and even the Viltrox shop - and there is no mention, let alone price for a 13mm f1.4. Perhaps this is US only?? It does not appear to be available in the UK.
It's not released yet. B&H has a pre-order.
what breed is the dog?
Hi! I do photograph for fun and on budget, which one would you recommend between viltrox 13mmf1.4 vs sigma 16mm f1.4. Thx
I haven't shot with the Sigma yet, so I'm not sure.
Yep, the focus breathing on the 35mm f2 is so bad it cured me of my dependence on auto-focus for talking head videos, but it would still be nice to be able do some smooth rack focus style clips like you have of the two puppies toward the end of this video.
Btw. What's your raw editing software, do you ever have problems with "worms" in you Fuji pics?
Lightroom. Nah. You have to shoot with pretty high ISO and crank the sharpness slider to see those. I don't sharpen in Lightroom.
Is this for sale? No shops in Europe offer it, even Amazon, and not present on Viltrox store site either
It's not released yet. It's up for presale on B&H
Good review as usual. :)
I'm torn between this lens and the new Rokinon 12mm f/2 AF - Viltrox because of the larger aperture, Rokinon by size.
The Rokinon feels terrible in the hand. I sold it and kept the $100 Pergear 12mm f2 instead.
man, what a quiff!
Thanks for the quick reply. It seems only US based reviewers have actually had this lens. It is not even possible to pre-order outside of the USA. I can only assume that it is production limited and the US will get the first production. Ah well, that will give Viltrox a chance to perfect manufacture before I order one!
It's not out yet. I got a pre-release look. You can pre-order on B&H though.
I was very excited for this lense because I would love to use it for video shooting. Other reviewers said that the wobbling effect is very strong so for my way of shooting Videos it's unusable. What experiences did you make?
I didn't notice a warble, but I also don't use this lens for static shots. Those who notice warbling in lenses are usually vloggers who point the camera at themselves whilst on a tripod. I haven't used this lens for that yet, so probably why I haven't noticed.
I have this lens and have noticed this. I was wondering if there is a way to correct this through camera settings or software? or is this just an artifact of wide angle for video? My 18mm Fuji doesn't seem to have this problem, but do like the wider angle of this Viltrox lens..
Wow, you look different and good. Saw your video after quite some time. Samyang has released an AF version of their popular manual 12mm f2. Did you get a chance or are planning to test it?
I probably should try out the AF version, but I just really didn't like the MF version, so I haven't been super excited about it.
@@AndrewGoodCamera Well life has been giving me lemons for a while. There aren't many manual Fuji shooters here so I bought the Samyang 12mm couple of years back as I couldn't afford Fuji lenses back then. Now this Viltrox makes me want to buy it but I'll have the Samyang sitting around and that makes me sad.
Similar thing happened when I imported the incredibly soft and cheap but amazing 7artisans 35mm f1.2 from China. Fuji launched the XC35mm f2 months later.
But that 7artisans has been glued to my X-T30 for more than a year or so, it's so good, like a vintage lens when paired with FujiXWeekly recipes.
Sorry for the rant. I'll probably look for a buyer for the Samyang manual and get this Viltrox. Camera Conspiracies made a good video about it too.
Amazing video. You have a nice and happy family and I love your family's love for going out on treks.
I have this lens on pre-order and have been waiting for a north american review! My primary use for it is as a hybrid lens so everything you are saying lines up amazingly! I notice you didn't mention the Sigma 16mm F1.4 offering as a potential competitor? It is in the same price range as the 13mm viltrox and seems to be getting good reviews as well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! already has me feeling much better about my purchase.
I actually did mention the Sigma and also have it on pre-order, so will definitely being comparing that also in the future.
@@AndrewGoodCamera ahh sorry I missed that. I'll look forward to that review as well!!
@@Edisonwatts No worries mate!
weight to me is not plasibo. It actually makes the camera heavier and easier to handle when free handing on shoots
Would you say it is as good as the Zeiss 12mm for photos?
I just came here for the doggy videoshots ☺🐕
It is really, really awesome lens for photo and video! But for me it is a little bit too wide :(
Is the 13mm available on EU market... can't find it!
Hasn't released yet. Preorder is up on B&H
Hi Florian, you can order it at least in Germany via rollei website e.g.. actually at the moment for a great price
Were you driving down the road with your head out the window just before you shot this? Just curious. Placebic?! Luck you. I've been waiting 12 years to use that word.
It is kind of odd because a few people are claiming the 18 mm is wide-angle sorry 18 mm converts to 27 mm and that is not wide
Anything under 24mm - full frame is wide
Anything over 20mm isn’t wide (full frame)
I’m keen on this lens as it’s kind of like 20mm I had on my Nikon
I need this lens for yesterday? You selling this one? I'd pay you a mark up price 😁😁
First time I’ve seen a copy of this lens with a plastic hood.
Welp, time to sell my samyang 12mm to save up for this one!
Did u soften these images or why do they look like this
Yes! I don't really shoot digital (and don't have a Fuji camera), but metal is the way to go! Can't stand the cheapo plastic build quality everything needs to have nowadays.
What I would really like to know about this lens, is how good it is for astro photography!
I'm gonna guess, horrible
@@AndrewGoodCamera ouch, really? Why is that?
On paper it sounds great: very wide angle combined with a very wide aperture should allow for great exposure for stars!
So I’m curious then, what makes it a bad option! 😂
@@AndrewGoodCamera not really horrible, look at the test by Les Guides Fujifilm. The stars are distorted but do remain very small. Also the Samyang 12mm is not free of star distortion.
The question that needs asking ….how can they manufacture this it at such an affordable price yet fuji can’t be
I thought you were Conan O'Brien, must be the hair do !!
Way to wide for me. 16mm is widest I can imagine using.
I wish Viltrox would upgrade their 33 mm.
Bought and returned instantly after how the sky burns even the sun out of the picture and I think like a half moon like a rainbow next to the burnt circle with a blue stripe. Almost €500 bought on Amazon returned cheap is expensive not to believe everything that is said.
A good budget lens but the new Fujifilm 1.4's are in a different league, build and optical quality is exceptional, worth saving the pennies a bit longer for
Depends what you gonna use it for tho. For astro,,, its better with manual focus, like samyang 12 f2
For landscape, AF don't matter much, and 1.4 don't matter much. Usually shoot f4-f11.
Distortion on this lens is terrible, and sharpnes in corners not that good.
So who is this for? I guess if you shoot wide with something in the foreground if you want some bokeh. But for the price, its great. I was thinking about fuji 14 f2.8.... samyang 12 f2 and viltrox 13. I went with the 12 f2 cos its sharp, wide, compact, not much distortion, good bokeh for closeups.
Otherwise fujis 10-24 is awsome! OIS for video, ultrawide, you can use it as all purpose lens on 24mm.
clicked apperture ring sucks for video ((
Unfortunately, it's nowhere to be found
Not released yet
Man this lens is crap haha.
It’s probably fine for family and holiday photos. But image shooting professional real estate images with that one. I could see that distortion straight away 😅
You're certainly not a pro if you're not shooting raw and don't know how to correct this with a couple of clicks. Sounds like you've never used anything but a 50mm.
@@KeithG75 I agree, shooting raw is a must regardless. And distortion is an easy fix in Lightroom/Capture one but what kind of assumption is that?😂 The most professional and well known portrait photographers use 50mm only for their work.
@@recepuenel1 Kind of a dumb take when we're looking at a 13mm here ... stick to your tutorials, you'll get there in the end ...
@@KeithG75 Haha! Dude, what's your problem? Why this passive-aggressive tone? "stick to your tutorials"
@@recepuenel1 Because from the off your posts come across as trollish, sounds like you've not used the lens as anywhere I've looked a "small amount of barrel distortion" is reported with no in cam corrections on - that, sor a wide angle is very decent. You're spreading false information and then you harp on about professionals only ever using a 50mm ... lol, hence the jab about tutorials - we all use them, but maybe you just need to brush up on some more if that's what you believe
You can compare all of these lens, but being different focal lengths they frame differently, you can crop the 13mm to look kind of the 16 or 18mm but you can't make a 16 or 18mm frame like a 13mm. As far of boka ,once you get that wide out of focus areas are not as important as edge to edge sharpness.
It seems like you have a faulty one... mine IS just a joy to use in both photos or vidéo (silent ans quick AF )
