  • This beautiful little 13mm f1.4 from Viltrox really fills a gap in the Fujifilm lens lineup. It's a fantastic all-rounder - it gives creamy smooth background blur if you're shooting close and wide open, but stop it down to f5.6 or f8 and everything in the visual field is in sharp focus!
This lens gives a big, wide-open feel to images, full of air and light, panoramic and dramatic. I loved using it, and it's given me a chance to really practice and refine my wide angle approaches and techniques. Very fast autofocus makes photography incredibly simple too, leaving you free to concentrate on composition.
I found it to be a beautifully made lens too, with close tolerances and finely damped controls. If you're looking for a fantastic wide angle lens for your APS-C camera this one is definitely worth putting on your list!

I discovered this channel while looking into some classic lenses for a film and now I m hooked. It's opened my world to vintage lens collecting and photography, something I never spent time on. So many lenses and companies I never heard of and now I find myself shooting insane pictures. A real delight, thank you for getting me into vintage photography

How forward thinking of Fuji to release the details of how to make and interface lenses to their mirrorless cameras. This enables companies to produce lenses in Fuji native format, and Viltrox have certainly done that. I have the 85mm f1,8 for my Fujis and it's a stunning performer, it translates to around the 135mm mark on APS-C format and is perfect for close portraits, street photography and gig and concert photography.
Viltrox picked up the Fuji baton and have run with it, producing some stunning prime lenses in the process. These new Chinese lens manufacturers know what it's all about and more power to them.
Great review, Nigel, if I didn't have my Sigma 10-20mm zoom in Nikon mount I could be tempted.

I really appreciate you talking about your experiences with the lens. I love your descriptors for wide angle such as expansive and air-ey. Images filled with oxygen! That makes so much sense as I have also spent many years shooting with long lenses that compress the image. Very inspiring! Thank you.

You mean the little 'b' camera? It's a Panasonic GH2 with standard 14-48 kit zoom. I'm always surprised at the good results it gives on video. Stills aren't so great, but video was always a strong point and it still holds its head above water today!

I have the Samyang 12mm for Fuji. The older model, with manual focus. I don't shoot a lot of wide, but a very nice lens. I got an insane deal in on- $250 USD. Normally goes for $400. Takes some practice, to get the most out of such a wide lens.

A good 5th option between 2 zooms and 4 primes (Samyang 12mm f2 AF, Samyang 12mm f2 manual, Zeiss Distagon Touit 12mm f2.8 and Fujifilm 14mm f2.8 )if you need wide and bright aperture. I will keep mine Zeiss 12mm since I have no need for f1.4, heavy and un-supported third party lens.

It's actually pretty light, although it is a little larger than many wide lenses.

@@zenography7923Yes it is light for that focal length ,but I prefer smaller lenses and weight if I don't need such a bright aperture.

Great review, thank you! Mine arrived last week and it hasn't left my X-T3 since! I've also been very impressed with the sharpness wide open.. it's noticeably sharper than my Fuji 10-24mm, and gets just a little sharper as one stops down to f/5.6 - f/8. And as you've mentioned, background blur *is* quite a nice surprise on this lens -- I feel it opens up a new avenue of expression that simply isn't available on my 10-24mm f/4. Overall, I've yet to find anything I *don't* like..

Is it exclusively Fuji mount, guessing it's an apsc, has got a good look about it. priced at about 300? Fbw focus ring guess mechanical wouldn't be silent. And what are those vhs cassettes?
Still not found a lens I'm completely happy with to use on my 30p1280*720 desk view apsc camera (emount)

It's available in all aps-c mounts, not just Fuji! One of the vhs tapes is 'carry on screaming' and the other is 'dr who and the robots of death'!

I'm wondering a little bit, why suddenly there is a some hype about a 13mm lense, while Fuji has the 14mm F2.8 since many years. A little small gem which is ignored by mostly every YT reviewer.
The 14mm is absolutely the sharpest lense ever made by Fuji. It has super fast autofocus (since every short lense has to move the optics only a small distance) and it has this wonderful clutch mechanism for going manual focussing. No distortion, no fringing.
Most important for me, it is the only Fuji lense that really can focus on infinity. Unfortunately no YT reviewer (even Mr Frost himself) cares about this flaw that comes with most electronically driven lenses, especially if they are from Fuji.
Yes, the Viltrox is quite faster than the Fuji 14mm, but double the size and weight. I can't see a lack in the Fuji - portfolio. Just that Viltrox has made a really good and faster lense, with the cost of size and weight.

I am not so convinced of these very wide angle lens with such aperture. This makes them heavy, big and expensive… For me an f 2.0 would have been sufficient for this focal where looking for very tigh dof is more an exercise of style than photo. But I know that the brands like to do these kind of expensive stuff. Sony with its 20 f1.8 and 24mm f1.4 which cost more than 1k€ each (this makes the photo not cheap you know because you don t always use them) are just some example. Here with Viltrox we cut the price by half but I am convinced that an f 2.0 would have cost more 300-350 euros and covering 95% of this one. It would have been also better at f4.0 and with less vigneting full opened than this one. So perhaps sigma will do it… just be patient :).

    • @zenography7923
      @zenography7923  2 года назад +2

It may be that f2 would be sufficient in a lens of this type, but f1.4 is very nice to have!

All said is good and dandy but I believe that lens has no weather sealing, and that's almost a deal breaker for me. So until something like that with the WR comes along, I'll use my dumb, fully mechanical Samyang 12/2 for such wide occasions...
