FUJIFILM XF 10-24mm vs VILTROX 13mm - What is Fuji's Best Wide Angle Lens?

  • I can not believe I am saying this out loud, but could I be selling the Fujifilm XF 10-24mm F/4 to be replaced with the Viltrox 13mm F1.4 for Fujifilm? I think most would agree with me, that the Fuji 10-24mm is the most versatile landscape photography lens, and probably the lens I would recommend to all Fujifilm users.
However, for a long time, I have been screaming out (and still am) for Fujifilm to make a wide-angle fast prime for night photography. Ideally, a 12mm or 13mm F/2 lens would be amazing, if it had F1.4 that would be a game-changer - just like Viltrox has created!
If I am 100% honest I feel the Fujifilm XF 10-24mm is a static lens, it's amazing at landscape/architecture photography, but it stops there. The AF is slow, for video, it struggles with stabilisation and low light, it's well terrible! The Viltrox 13mm still struggles with stabilisation, but excels in every other aspect where the XF 10-24mm fails!
Let me know in the comments below what you think is the better of the two lenses for Landscape Photography and if you could tell the difference with the images provided below.
Please Fuji, learn from this and follow suit! :D

I have them both. The Viltrox is amazing but... the 10-24 is a great walking-around lens for me too. So, I'm keeping both for now.

I agree there’s definitely reason for both in the bag….both together still way cheaper than the 8-16, I didn’t rate that lens and sold.

Thanks for sharing your files, it's very useful to be able to compare real life images side by side. Both these lenses are on my radar ... currently use the 16-80mm and the Samyang 12mm for landscape (and astro in the case of the 12mm). Was planning on picking up the Viltrox at some point as an upgrade for astro, and have long planned to add the 10-24mm to my kit ... but you make an interesting case :-) Must say, based on your images the Viltrox is definitely sharper. I suppose I should expect that from a prime. Thanks again, these comparison videos are very useful.

Good question and curious on the follow-up. I also own both but didn‘t do the comparison yet. At the end I guess the Viltrox can‘t replace the Fuji completely. With the zoom the Fuji is more flexible out in the fields. Only sunstars are horrible. Guess for low light situations the V will definitely do better

Great rational and explanation on why you feel the Viltrox is the best ultra wide lens for your use. I have a first gen 10-24 as well that I have shot with for years. I have only used it for landscape/city scape photo and I have always been very happy with its sharpness and contrast. Just like you said I rarely use mine at 10mm, and looking at my metadata its like 90% at 13mm. Going above that I almost never use any focal length before 27ish mm. I purchase the manual focus Samyang 12mm to use for astro and it worked pretty good. Never used it for daylight photography as the fuji 10-24 is optically much better. When Viltrox came out with the 13mm I watched the reviews on it and was surprised by everyones reaction to how good they thought it was. The sharpness/contrast and most importantly lack of coma wide open was the ticket for me to purchase it, and the added benefit of its close focus while remaining sharp and contrasty was a bit plus too. This is the lens fuji should have made years ago. I am happy to have it in my kit now too and am thinking about parting ways with the 10-24. I do like the 10-24 versatility though. I do not have the 16-55 but I do have the 18-55 and am mostly satisfied with its images. But like I mentioned earlier I seldom shoot at focal lengths between 14mm to 27mm. I would say this is Viltrox best lens too. Its image quality equals the great performing 10-24.

  • @randyk1919

Great images!! I've got both lenses.. the 10-24 was my first lens in the Fuji system (!) and I wouldn't have considered selling it until now. I love the flexibility of the Fuji zoom, but I also gravitate to the wider end and don't care that much for the rendering/IQ when zoomed in. But the Viltrox.. wow. It pretty well covers the focal length I like to shoot at, and blows away the zoom in low light situations, close focusing, corner sharpness and astro.

I have received my Viltrox 13mm f1.4 last week. It is by far one of the best lenses I have ever used. It is shaper on the edges compared to xf 10-24 but Viltrox shines in low light situations such as events, interior architecture, museums etc. It is also a great focal length for landscape photography. When you go down to 11mm or 10mm you have higher vignetting in XF 10-24, not to mention that it is f/4. I would not grab it for low light situations. If you have 23mm f2.0 like me you absolutely do not need XF 10-24 since it is very soft at 23-24mm range. Therefore, I have sold my XF 10-24 and Viltrox 13mm f1.4 has become my go to lens for travel & landscape photography.

What I am wondering tho...is this Viltrox 13mm1.4 a Fuji 16mm1.4 killer? Cause if I'm deciding between those 2 right now, esp for astro, I think I would take cheaper and wider focal range...

I think the micro contrast, and color rendition is better on the Fuji 14mm 2.8. And it’s half the size. For stills, it’s probably a better option for those reasons. Yes the Viltrox is faster, but it’s a beast, and for a wide fast lens, I’d go for the 16mm 1.4 Fuji because it’s crazy close focus ability, which the Vilrox just doesn’t do nearly as well. The Viltrox is probably a better video lens, but the size…

Guess it's down to personal requirements; if you need a 13mm F1.4 AF, Fuji X mount lens, then just go out and buy the Viltrox. No need to "pixel peep", as in any real world comparison the differences will be miniscule, the differences in build quality and operation will for the most part be subjective. What isn't an issue is that a new Viltrox is great value for money, (although used mark1 Fujifilm 10-24mm are now very well priced).
I don't own the Viltrox, but have owned the Fujifilm 24mm F2.8, Zeiss Touit 12mm F2.8 & Samyang 12mm F2, and although I've enjoyed using each, I kept coming back to the Fujifilm 10-24mm zoom which retains it's place in my camera bag owing to it's versatility, and despite also owning the Fujifilm 16-80mm F4.
I guess being primarily a landscape photographer, but also enjoying city walk abouts, the 10-24mm best meets my needs!

What you're losing compared to what you are gaining is negligible Matt since you can utilise other lenses from 16mm onwards. The viltrox by a mile. The 10-24 is really just a landscape lens. It’s good when you’re using it for vistas that are farther away. The image quality falls apart when focusing on closer subjects. The viltrox is a landscape lens and really anything you want to throw at it. It’s also capable of resolving more detail at 1.4 than the 10-24 is at f4, and completely surpasses the 10-24 at the same apertures. The only advantage of the 10-24 is the zoom, and the OIS. The OIS is surprisingly good but 13mm is easy for camera IS to handle in most cases with more modern camera bodies.
These were my takeaways from using both.
