The rounded edges and flat top/bottom makes me think of a file handle. I do like how the flat parts keep the hex shapes in tact.
I really fell in love with the shape, even as I wanted to keep turning it. I'm glad other folks agree.
@@peterbrownwastaken thinking more about the file handle shape, I wonder how it would look indented slightly rather than completely flat. I guess that would be kind of a nightmare to shape if it wasn't cast that way from the beginning.
@@Squibbleses could be relatively simple to indent on the radius of the belt sander, similar to how bladesmiths add fullers or hollow grinds to blades
@@peterbrownwastaken I like it because its kinda similar in shape to a lot of honey bottles you'll find in stores, those flat front and back, ribbed sides curved in at the top. It's like a skinny version of those bottles, and the honeycomb even makes the sides look like it has a ribbed texture like those bottles. Great project over all!
Yeah it definitely has the tool handle vibe, I’d love a set of tools looking that awesome.
Great project! Inspired me to think... since the resin poured into each cell doesn't really mix with its neighbors, you could conceivably make a paint-by-number kind of design and fill each cell accordingly. Maybe pipettes would be involved. The effect would be almost like stained glass, but pixelated. I think it would be time consuming and require some experimenting but has the potential to deliver a really cool result.

Yes! A thin clear layer at the bottom to keep each color from leaking.... That would be amazing!

Could probably insert the resin into each cell via a pipette. Very time consuming, like you said, but I think it'd be worth the effort!
That looks fantastic! I love the way the honeycomb cuts away at the sides, and where it's rounded - it's oddly kind of art deco-seeming, like the kind of lines and colours you'd find in a retro diner. It'd love to see you do more with the aluminium honeycomb; it's so attractive when it's worked.
YES. I thought I was the only one getting art deco vibes from that. I LIVE for how it looks. I 100% want to make a brush handle like this.

Peter, phenomenal job as always! I’ve commented this before but I really think you should make a plaster mold of your self (body or head) and fill it with your leftover resin. At the end you’d have a pretty great object that would tell the stories of all the projects you put in to it. Just a thought
The layers wouldn't adhere properly with resin you want the layers to still be "soft" when you pour another layer on for good adhesion
@@Tater_Lord If it's only a head mold (so, not too big with a wide neck opening), I think you could pretty easily do a quick sand on the previous layer for better adhesion :) I like the idea
@@Tater_Lord they wouldn't "properly" adhear but there wouldn't be many forces on it and it could be covered with resin after to be sure
@@Tater_Lord They can be cured before another layer. The only difference is, you can probably see the individual layers if you look close. I cure things completely all the time before next layer.
@@Tater_Lord you could put some kind of rebar or something akin in the mould so that the layers held together, but i think part of the charm of this idea is the incremental work & colors of the work.
I love that MOLD! I make soap and that ability to adjust the mold size would be AMAZING!!

Just when you stopped turning and we saw the oblong shape I thought "How in the world did he do that? That's so cool!" I'm so glad you decided to keep the shape.
There's something uncanny about seeing the surface of the finished handle. In digital 3d software that would usually be the result of a lazily done projection UV unwrap, but seeing a physical object that looks like that is extremely odd. Really neat though!

I don't think I have ever seen a honey dipper besides the one on the cereal box, but that is definitely the best one I have ever seen!
The finished handle looks beautiful, with the sides it kind of reminds me more of snake scales, rather than a honey comb.
Very much agree, the honeycomb works for bees but I had just posted with some iridescent green & yellow resins it would be great on a snake themed knife as a handle.

Very pretty effect. I'm really liking it.
For some reason the flats on it are giving me flashbacks to a set of handles a mates dad made for his hand machine scrapers. He wanted them to have a rounded triangle profile, and built a jig for his metal lathe so he could turn one side of the triangle on all 6 at the same time, then turn all the pieces 120' to do the next side. Then he taper turned each one separately to get the more traditional overall shape, and knock off the corners of the triangles. After that was just sanding to blend out the sharp edge lines.
The "Flats" on the finished handles had something like a 7 or 8" radius to the curves, and they had a really positive locational feel in the hand. I remember at the time thinking it was a lot of work for fancy tool handles when you could just buy normal ones for next to nothing. OK, these were much nicer than the cheap shop bought ones, but it took him most of a day to make them.......... It took me several more years of being an idiot kid, but I eventually did get why he went that extra mile to made his own. It's the same reason I'll make lockpicks that cost me more in materials than I could buy perfectly acceptable cheap Chinese import picks for.
Rounded triangle is a very nice choice for a great hand fit :)
I always love the lathe part, but wow this one might be my favorite one ever there was just something really special about it I don't know how to put into words I just really liked it a lot

Here's a question: How do you know when to switch to a different grit when sanding?
That's a great question.
When the scratches look uniform. Sanding is just the process of replacing deeper scratches with less deep ones.
@@peterbrownwastaken And don't skip the grit progression.
Sanding each grit at a different angle relative to the last one helps. Once all of the lines one way are gone, it's time to move up in grit and rotate our direction. Some shapes make this hard to do, but if you can then it's an easy way to tell.
Love the honey comb handle I have seen the aluminium support before used in kitchen bench once where the gentleman who was making a bench top for a friend but they only had a limited supply of the exotic wood from a tree that had been hit by lighting on his parents property so they used the honeycomb support for the heart of the kitchen bench and then added the wood over the top so that they would have enough of the timber to make all of the draw faces as well.
I love the shape of the handle that would give it a really pleasing feel in the hand while using specially when someone has arthritis in both hands loved the colours used special as it caught the light.

i am in LOVE with the end result. I also find the act of creating a physical object satisfying.
I took a bee keeping class because my wife and I were keeping bees. On a hive inspection as related by the instructor a woman went out to her hive and found red, green, yellow and blue spots on her honey comb. She lived very close to a 7-11 and the bees were attracted to the syrup from the discarded slurpy liquid. Bees will go just about any where to get sugar for making honey. The handle is very cool. Fantastic work! Taking on new projects like this and discovering new or unorthodox techniques is part of the process which leads to nice surprises, sometimes. Even when some fail, you learn what doesn't work and move on. Glad this one turned out beautifully!

I have been turning pizza cutter and ice cream handles for quite a few years using acrylic acetate and inlace acrylester turning blanks. I don't know how the resin that Peter is using compares but I not heard of any problems with the my handles being run through the dishwasher. Couldn't say the same for the wood handled ones though! Staying with the acrylics unless it is a customer order. FYI
Love the look of the handle. If I did something like this, I'm just glad I have a diamond lapidary machine. It makes sanding go a lot quicker.😁

I love it!!! Honey dippers were my first project on the lathe. The honey comb on a honey dipper, is a great idea.
That looks absolutely incredible! The aluminum inlay look is soooo nice! I wish the flats were sanded down to the aluminum to complete the inlay look though! Also, wet sanding or polishing paste or buffing to really make it crystal clear would be so perfect

I wouldn’t dare assume to tell you your craft. Just an observation: I recommend to everyone who is sanding anything, to rinse the object being sanded and clear off the work surface an your hands in between every grit. I’ve hand sanded enough mirror polish knives to have learned this lesson.all it takes is one grain of a former grit to ruin your current grit.

Speaking of sharpening turning tools, i did a school project where i turned a white oak bat, the only cutting tools were old and really blunt, like the edge of a spoon. And me being young didnt know they were supposed to be any different lol that oak bat took a long time....

The profile reminds me of a set of screwdrivers my grandfather gave me. Same kind of rounded-off rectangular prism type deal, only his handles were made out of wood.
That looks like snakeskin effect especially the greens yellow bit. It is a lovely project.
The other day, I watched a video by Nate from the Internet where he cast bread in resin to make a handle for a bread knife. When he said what his plan was my first thought was "That is totally something Peter Brown would do."
