The Man Living in Complete Isolation for 40 Years (Part 2/4) | Far Out

- Since 1965, Faustino Barrientos has lived alone on the shores of lake O'Higgins in a house built from the remains of a shipwrecked fishing vessel. He's a pastoralist, living mostly off the land and his livestock, with few modern amenities. His nearest neighbors are in Villa O'Higgins, a small community of several hundred people, 25 miles away, accessible only by a two-day horseback ride through rugged mountain animal paths. Every few years, Faustino makes this ride to sell his cattle in town.
Currently 81 years old, Faustino is reaching the end of his life, and his self-imposed isolation is being encroached upon by the forces of government, economy, and tourism. In December 2011, VICE went to document his lifestyle and speak with him about the changing face of Patagonia and the gaucho lifestyle.

Lex VM yeah what the hell .. she came empty handed!
You’re so right
*@Lex VM* You make a sensible point. But we can't know for sure if she came empty handed. It seems logical that anyone about to visit this recluse, should take some peace offering with them .
Just that it wasn't on camera , is no proof she came empty handed. Maybe even all the trouble and huge journey she took on to meet him , might have been enough of a peace offering . A 'bottle of wine" would be the last thing on my mind to give him , I'd rather choose something realy useful he could use for a long time .
Some kind of knife ,clothing or kitchen utensil .
Or books!
Lex VM
I don't think she just sneaked up on him.
She probably got his permission first before entering his terrain.
I'm surprised at how well he stays informed about the world around him. Pretty impressive knowledge for someone so old, old school, and isolated.
Anyone else take a liking to his goggles?
Like something straight out of a steampunk genre.
Obviously a very observant and intelligent man
VICE, take off the word "complete" and the title would make more sense
Then people wouldn't click as much.

"In complete FREEDOM"
Can't do that bro .....we need clicks ......
I think they mean complete isolation compared to ny/every city in America ... lololol
I find him quite normal in comparison to a lot of supposedly “normal” people
Because he isn't poisoned by the toxic life of the west. His brain functions because he doesn't drink fluoride from a tap in the USA.
It's weird that I can sort of relate to this man. I spend most of the time on my own, I dont interact with people very often. And watching this man I have realized that the less you are surrounded by people, the more wise and conscious about life you become, you appreciate or notice simple thing that everyone else would ignore like the changing weather, etc. You follow your instincts and you do things that woulden't do when you are around people, it's a feeling hard to describe.
Absolutely I can relate to it.
Man I get you, solitude can be overwhelming but you get used to it and it’s so serene once you settle
You have an intelligent Opinion
@@klegwale6233solitude isn't overwhelming...isolation is.
Solitude is peaceful aloneness, isolation is sequestering away in protection (fear based).

Do you like to live alone? "Yes, because life seems to be better when you're alone."
Well, if you're a miserable loner who shoots people who come onto your land; life probably is better alone.
But for normal, non-delusional people I'd say having some company won't hurt you.
@@Skjorrious At least he doesn't / didn't have to worry about BLM or Antifas coming over to burn his house down. Of course if they did he probably has enough ammo to hit them at a distance and take a good number of them out!
@@Skjorrious this is your reality and majority of humans not his and it’s your opinion not his or everybody thinks like you. He’s happy prob more than you.
@@sheilacotton7566 Well, if you get a documentary made about how cool you are; are you going to show how miserable you are? Probably not.
Furthermore, people needing other people is neither my opinion or "my reality". It is everyone's reality and a simple fact about our nature.
But yea', for sure I wouldn't contest the possibility of him being more happy than me. That still doesn't just scratch over human nature just like that.
@@Skjorrious That's not true for every person. There are people who can be perfectly happy living on their own. Don't generalize.
As interesting as this is, he still has contact with the city where he sells his stuff. This isn't "Complete Isolation" or else he wouldn't have a calendar for 2011, or a chainsaw made in the late 80s. He's still REALLY isolated, but it hasn't been been complete isolation for 40 years.
I'd say that even reading the newspaper and being aware of the goings-on in the rest of the world through radio broadcast makes Faustino not that isolated at all.

It is always a good idea to walk a little in someone else's shoes and experience the world from a different reality. I like his take on climate change, simply through observing the nature around him. This is such a simple method of noticing change if one cares to take the time. Unfortunately most people are to preoccupied with the fabrications of modern life to understand the truth of nature. So take some time here and there and notice the differences.
The reason why he knows more about Politics than the average person is cuz he got no access to 4chan/reddit/Qanon/Facebook/Twitter.
I must agree with him though, living alone is definitely easier.
Chinpo I agree 💯 percent. Alone is the best way. Or at best very little interaction.
Keeping touch with the world by reading newpapers, books and listening is still a good way to avoid the neuronal diseases of the old-age.

Search for Dick Proenneke, a retired man who lived for thirty years near a lake in the Alaska mountains, and had a bush pilot friend who'd bring him his mail, and the supplies he ordered via it, every now and then.
They made a very good documentary using his filming and journal notes, as he was an amateur photographer and kept journals about his everyday life
The same way he get the chainsaw and the calender and the wine? Duh
They say that he hasnt gone as far as the town near by, O'Higgins, which means he goes there from time to time. I'd imagine that he gets what he needs for a month or so, depending on the time of year, and just makes the trek back and forth as needed.

So many people raging at the word complete in the title. What the fuck did you expect. It's virtually impossible to live on Earth without any human contact. If this is not "complete" isolation, its as close as it gets. Humans are social creatures that can hardly survive alone and need intellectual interaction with their peers. That's why isolation can have really bad consequences in human psyche. I think the documentary is a really good one and that this man is remarkable. He shows a lot of intelligence and perception and he probably knows more about current events than the average person who despite having access to an endless flow on info thanks to modern technologies, chooses to be quite ignorant..
THANK YOU!
Yes. The people complaining about the title wouldn't last 3 days in this environment. They'd die wondering why the newspapers are all months old and stacked 30 days worth high.
I thought the point of a documentary was to look (eyes open) and listen (ears open) and perhaps self educate. It would seem however that anything on RUclips is just another All Star HipHop clip in the eyes of most people.
he still depends on other people, once or twice a year he gets newspapers, but how many times a year does he get bottles of wine?? and how does he get gas for his chainsaw?? where does he buy hos clothes? i want to live isolated like him

Nice enough guy but this whole series is pointless. He likes being alone. So? Is that really such an oddity to warrant flying across the world to talk to him? Given he has modern technology (solar panels, chainsaw etc), plenty of wine, newspapers, new calendars etc, he is not in any way 'completely isolated.' I live in a city but have no family or friends. Other than saying 'thanks' to a bus driver or the girl who gives me change for groceries at the supermarket, I often go months without conversation. A whole year back in 2013. Not sure if its healthy for humans to live like that but some people prefer it. Does Vice really think its worth interviewing me? I don't.
tabitha quinn Im a loner as well and it scares me for my future.
lead poisoning im a loner and I love it
A fascinating man, I'm a loner too, destiny did not brought me a wife or friends, I hope God will give me long life to continuing learning about things, until the end comes
i respect people who can be alone, almost everyone needs to be in a social environment, on the phone or initiating drama as an escape to not look into themselves.
He is probably one of the smartest most self aware humans. Like ever. Lol
Why do people assume you can't live without sex or porn? Wtf. You make me loose faith in humanity.
I lived in the Alaskan bush for 20 yrs, after a while you don't think of such things. I saw one person a yr the bush pilot, bringing me my supplies. One of the down sides of being born in today's society is that the education system doesn't educate. Instead it programs people such as yourself to view anything that doesn't fit the agenda as either taxable, illegal or impossible.
