The Man Living in Complete Isolation for 40 Years (Part 1/4) | Far Out

- Опубликовано: 2 июл 2024
- Since 1965, Faustino Barrientos has lived alone on the shores lake O'Higgins' in a house built from the remains of a shipwrecked fishing vessel. He's a pastoralist, living mostly off the land and his livestock, with few modern amenities. His nearest neighbors are in Villa O'Higgins, a small community of several hundred people, 25 miles away, accessible only by a two-day horseback ride through rugged mountain animal paths. Every few years, Faustino makes this ride to sell his cattle in town.
Currently 81 years old, Faustino is reaching the end of his life, and his self-imposed isolation is being encroached upon by the forces of government, economy, and tourism. In December 2011, VICE went to document his lifestyle and speak with him about the changing face of Patagonia and the gaucho lifestyle.

Replace the loneliness word with solitude
Is that a quote from someone or did you just quote yourself.
As a lonley freak i cant agree with u
There’s a reason he looks so damn good for his age. Not dealing with people.
Asian people age much better and they are very social
And he eats organic, fresh food every day!

Yeah, people will f you up.
Not dealing with women.
There's a big difference between alone and lonely.
Facts
Thats true bro , alone is better . No conflicts , no crappy people .
Hi guys, if anyone want to shed light on this, please!
I was wondering about a thought about Faustino's life, we all get this notion that we have to do something with our life (achieve something, enjoy, wealth, status, respect, love, relationship, explore, invent, create, etc). On the contrary Don Faustino hasn't had any of these, lived almost sober life for 40 years. Obviously, he was farming, herding and surviving, reading. But broadly he was just surviving or passing days of his life without doing anything meaningful.
But, my question is, would it be wise to say that his life was a meaningless life or to be blunt, a failed life and he a failure.
Note - I'm not judging him, I'm not even one to judge. I was just asking question to myself and couldn't get some good perspective so i wanted to ask you guys out.
That's true , you can be lonely in a crowd and content by yourself. You can't say that his life or the things he did were meaningless , only he can decide that.
@@anuragcvsr7169 , you're only a failure if you feel like one. It's perfectly fine to not give in to the rat race.
the older i get and the more im exposed to humanity, the more i understand and can relate with these people.
Likewise!
I understand both you, and him.
Cities can make us very sick.
I agree this is why I watch videos like this to help me and motivate me to live a life like this , so peaceful
Indeed, I also like that he has a shortwave radio in the beginning. That’s what I wanna do, live in a remote valley like that and just spin the dial on my shortwave radio all day.
Imagine living in peace for 40 years then someone from vice rocks up...

He wasn’t living in isolation. He was living in freedom.
i see what you are saying. but freedom has a variety of definitions, i am seeing. what does freedom look like for you? I have seen people wihtout"freedom" and yet they have chosen to be "free". some will understand this and some will not.. sometimes experience is the only things that can help some to see that.
Faustino is real American! 🦅🇺🇸
@@captainsternn7684 Indeed!
Maya M.E. I understand what you’re saying. Mental freedom or the ability to use ones mind to free yourself from the circumstances your physical body is in. True freedom in my opinion is riding oneself from the confides of our prison we call our bodies.
@@thelight5067 thank you for being respectful. And yes..i do feel we are saying the same thing though? Perhaps i am just understanding you i correctly..but i appreciate you sharing and i very much understand that there could and are different types of freedoms even. For me at least. And again thank you for being respectful . Its so nice when we can chat with others are disagree but be kind. Or just share views etc.
I am 63, and live alone. I love it. I see people when I choose to. It's refreshing, empowering, and makes me live closer to the land. Less distractions that waste time....
Little beans and whatnot have you for both on the land to use all in the westward distance and whatnot have you
A man goes to the ends of the earth to be left alone and some busy bodies from thousands of miles away hunt him down and impinge on his personal space - great!
Thats how it be my friend. Thats how it be
He’s lucky it wasn’t his nephew!
Ehhh hopefully they left soon after and didn’t bother him anymore

Being social is great man
He might be the happiest man on Earth, discovering that human beings are the source of all of our problems.
Michael it becomes so much more clear the more you think about it too, i remember i was maybe 12 when i discovered my misanthropy, i started to question everything, we humans, think this is OUR planet, we act like we own it. all we do in life is devour other life.. thats it, we Are nature's Black Plague.
I've always thought that the most "human" thing to do is EVIL itself. No other species on earth damage other just for pleasure, only suvival.
And look how human we are that we are wrecking earth, even tho it's the only place to live we have...
“Man is by nature a social animal; an individual who is unsocial naturally and not accidentally is either beneath our notice or more than human. Society is something that precedes the individual. Anyone who either cannot lead the common life or is so self-sufficient as not to need to, and therefore does not partake of society, is either a beast or a god. ”

I lived somewhat like this for about 8 months, didn't speak to people but maybe once or twice a month, didn't really see anyone. If you go into it with a good head, some good common sense, it can be enjoyable, it is a very simple life and going back to civilization you will miss the tranquility and simplicity, the idea that you can wake up every single day and do exactly what you want with no one to bother you or interrupt your plans.

I wrote a lot of songs and music, began to learn what kind of person I was. I am somewhat of an introvert, quite fine being alone and relish the times I get a chance to not be bothered. I also have ADD which makes it difficult to focus on things, when you do the same thing every day, get into a strict uninterrupted routine without anyone or anything to bother you or change your plans, it makes it much easier to focus on things. I also spent time doing stuff out in nature, exploring the local area, I had bought chickens and raised them, I also had a dog. I did work, but it was alone at night in the middle of nowhere. I would occasionally see people, but didn't have much in common with them and due to my location and the night hours I worked, rarely communicated.
+danalexander I would go crazy, I can't stay in one place, I like to travel and explore other places. I need to socialize with people, even as an introvert.
Just finished watching all episodes. So very interesting....well done! Thank you so much for all your work, and for sharing.
I got to be honest, I really identify with this guy. I spent nearly 2 years alone, hiding from the world. Once you get used to being alone, you don't want it any other way. Other people just get in the way, and it can become frustrating to have to accommodate people, when all you want is peace and quiet. To be alone with your thoughts, a book, whatever your interests are.
What I see when I see this guy, is what I might have become had I not let the world back into my life. Even after I did, it took more than a year to feel comfortable again. And even now, I miss the solace of being alone.
It really is strangely addicting, once the pangs of loneliness pass in the beginning. (It all depends on the person how long that lasts. Depends on how tethered you are emotionally to the world, family, friends, etc. But it does pass in time, its almost like social withdrawls.)
I actually think it is a good experience for a person to go through at least once in your life. It gives you perspective, teaches you to collect your thoughts, and be practical.
I wouldn't give that experience up for anything. I learned a lot about myself in those 2 years. I learned that I don't need anyone to survive but myself, and knowing that gives me a sense of calm I never had before on some level.
Your nothing like this guy, your cringe, this guy is based asf
@@tinyvoid633 Based on your response, I know all I need to know about you. Your screen name fits you; a Tiny Void in the lives of the people who know you. I don't need a part 2, this already got me tearing up by the end of the video, I rather only imagine what this man had to say. He clearly lives in peace.

If you’re surprised to find a man living for years in isolation, you obviously don’t know many men.
U know what they say about isolated people.. it is hard to meet them:)
Love this statement ❤️
Fact. 💯
from our perception he's alone, but from a different perspective he is not. He is with nature and animals....these are the best friends one can ever have!!
Vice documentary makes talk crap... “we had no idea what we were getting into”, “he had no technology” as guy sits listening to soccer on electric radio

He owns the time he has here on earth, his circumstances good or bad are a result of his actions without interference from the outside world. I'm envious.
Technically, it’s not complete isolation. He still has his pets, which are much better than the toxic humans.

@@coffeeenema6958 if that's what your mind immediately jumps to I have more concerns about you than I do this man.
I can honestly see myself living like that one day.
its so awesome how open-minded you are...
Me too, but I would like access to a hospital and doctor.
Same here!!
Being a person who has to deal with the public, at work, on a daily basis, I can certainly understand why he would avoid all human contact.
As someone who lived by themselves with my cats I can say this is the way to live.
no one is ever alone. ever. u have guides and guardians with u everyday forever.
He isolated before it was cool. 46 years in advance. Legend.
