It's an annoying problem with fixed roof bars, this guy has found a solution that really does help.He shares it to help others and alot of people seem more interested in taking the piss out of him....I tried it on my fixed roof rack and it works and alot cheaper than the manufacturers roof fairings.
all the car antennas that I installed over 20 odd years in car audio, no one could ever explain why they were "wrapped" with a maybe 1/16" wire. So cool to finally find out why. Brilliant.
I installed new cross bars on my Ford Edge which already had rails. The noise was so bad, I could not talk on my car phone. It sounded like I had a jet engine on my roof. I bought black paracord ($5 for 50 ft.) and wrapped it around the bars at about 1 1/2 inch spacings between the spirals. It knocked out 95% of the noise. I just want to let everyone know that this solution is for real and real cheap. Thanks so much. Fantastic tip!!!
ThankYou Sir! Years later I finally ended up with a Roof Rack to carry a Cedar Canoe on the River in Belize !You SiR… are a Pioneer in Reducing Wind Noise! Retirement Canadain Living in Belize.
I just wanted to say thank you for this video. My newly installed racks were quite loud at highway speeds. This little trick completely eliminated the noise.
This actually worked ! I'll be honest I was very skeptical. We just purchased roof bows for our Honda Pilot, the noise wasn't unbearable but very noticeable. 4$ black paracord along with just what the instructions from the video suggest and noise is gone ! Thank you for this video !
Man thanks, problem really solved. My new i20 racks was like listening two ancient Greek gods playing flutes. I made it with shoe laces and duck tape two every hole. You are the best...
Just installed cross bars on my Jeep and it's been annoying as hell! High-pitched whistling & buzzing. Am driving 2000mi cross country next week so can't wait to test this out! Thanks!
Just tried this on our Thule rack on our CRV. Incredible. So simple and solved our noise issue. We tried adjusting the back hatch window and door latch thinking the sound was coming from there. Next we were looking at the sunroof or Thule wind fairing. Cost us $6 for the paracord from Home Depot. Thank you for sharing.
I was going to leave my cartop carrier at home on a 5500 mile trip because my round bars roared over 60 m.p.h. Tried this and it worked beautifully.l can still hear a little noise but it is about 95 % gone. Thank you!
Ok so I just bought a cargo rack with a wind faring. At the moment, I just have the cross bars and at 60mph and over it’s like driving on the Rumble Strips on the side of the road. I’m hoping that with a combination of Faring and Cordage will calm down the noise a bit. I’ll be back 😎
I found that a larger diameter cord doesn't help more. Also, keeping the diameter small will allow you to still use your rack to hold things. A thicker cordage would not let you rest stuff on your rack.
I have a 2004 GMC Yukon that is in very good condition for its age, but the roof rakes rattled, I used coated exterior deck screws and screwed it to the rail. NOT to the roof..!!!
I use my rack about once a week and live in Florida so I would rather not spend 20 to 30 minutes getting it put on and then making corrections in a 100 degree scorching heat. I don't know anyone that has a roof rack and takes it on and off every single time.
I used to do that on my caddy maxi. 5 minutes only to take them on and vice versa with a power drill and a rounded umbraco. But the threads in the bodywork don't really like that, so now I leave them on. This idea actually works perfectly 👍

I thought the spiral was the wire itself transferring the signal. Learned 2 things today lol.

Thanks dude
Wrapped black parachute cord around mine this morning
Drove to work and got to 60mph and no noise
Happy days

Did it stop the whistling
I was slightly dubious about this solution, but it's the real deal! The level of noise reduction when driving at 80km/h is huge, thank you!!
Dude! This was the best tip for this issue!!
Thank you so much for posting this, I tried it and it works, Awesome!!!

This guy MUST be an aeronautical engineer
It worked and saved me a fortune before going out and buying faring.

Thanks boss, you’re genius 👍😊 only wondering why car or rack manufacturers haven’t thought of that
Because they want to sell you fairings.
Because they want people to buy their wind faring instead. 💡

Amazing, thank you for the tip, works a treat 👍🏻
It works! Now I need to find some black cords.
Excellent! Why? Because: SCIENCE!! Good vid.
Thank you! God bless you!
Wow useful Friend...Good Information...Less noise noted in my 🚗...
Thank you. I will try this first before buying anything.
Great idea I'm going to try it. My roof rack noise has been driving me crazy.
I will try out...I will update on results...thank you for tip
It worked nicely
Hopefully works, going to try now.
Thanks!
Wow. OK. I'm definitely going to try this. Thank you
Bad noise @0:50 ! Oh its a plane
Great tip? Now, have you had wind noise when you had a cargo box on the rack? Thanks.
Wow great idea. I'm going to take a wild guess and say you're in NYC
Noticed my car doing same today after putting on a rack
I'm guessing its only the front set that needs the wrap

I recently installed cross bars on mine and I can hear the wind noise, same noise when a strong breeze passes by and makes the windows sing 🎶
That was the longest earthquake I've ever seen.
lmao
Were you getting a very loud vibration sound trying to figure out where that is coming from on my FJ
The spiral on old antennas was to increase the length of the wire to afford better reception. I presume the wind aspect was just a side effect
That's now how antennas work. Length is tuned to particular frequencies, longer is not necessarily better.
Nice tip!!! Next video is how to reduce microphone wind noise?!? Hahah JK! 😂
Does the back one need it aswell?
2 videos I watched both show only the front one requires cord.
The first one breaks the wind so, no nees for both
Will the diameter of the rope or string make any difference to minimize the wind noise? Trying to get the most out of it.
I found that a larger diameter cord doesn't help more. Also, keeping the diameter small will allow you to still use your rack to hold things. A thicker cordage would not let you rest stuff on your rack.
I used 4,8mm rope and it doesn't work noise is still there...
Kaloyan Tashkov v
What if you did this on the whole car?
What if u have cross bars on the roof rack.. should I just put all over those bars...?
What kind of cross bars are those? I'm trying to find some that fit a 2011 Silverado that lock into the door opening.
How about when you add the box?
Excellent tip. Thanks.
Smart man! Thanks
I used 4,8mm rope and it doesn't work noise is still there. Use bigger rope!
use minimum diameter of 6mm (1/4") to 8mm maximum
This guy lives at the end of a runway and complains about his roof rack noise?
😂😂
🤣
Man I am trying man...will check it out how it works...
Should it be thick rope?
I have a 2004 GMC Yukon that is in very good condition for its age, but the roof rakes rattled, I used coated exterior deck screws and screwed it to the rail. NOT to the roof..!!!
*ok I will see if this works*
Works good!
Thanks. I'm going to give it a try
Braçadeira de plástico tbm serve para retirar o barulho
Hoy voy a probar esta idea en una camioneta kia carnival con una caja thule y barras de marca generica.
What kind of cord did you use?!
He said nylon.
@@stalliontheplumber7406 looks like some paracord
Will it reduce mpg, though? How about removing the rack altogether.
Mousepotato P why would someone remove the rack that they use often or may need to use in the future?
Mousepotato P too much hassle to keep putting it on and off
I use my rack about once a week and live in Florida so I would rather not spend 20 to 30 minutes getting it put on and then making corrections in a 100 degree scorching heat.

As the airplane flies by lol
Are you sure is not the airplanes passing by?
Does this work with pool noodles 🥴
Nope. Doesn't work
break wind..
Wtf ????. The coiled spiral is the antenna and has nothing to do with wind reduction . Far out , ppl have no idea !!
What about take them off......... that will help won't it??? 🤔🤔
u know people need to use that not just a decor
Do you realize they are there for an actual function and not just looks?
"Chordage" lol
Would it work on the mirrors as well?
