0:30. "Nothing you can do?” I have square bars. Wrapped with a thin cord in spiral. Not hearing any noise from roof rack now. I think this breaks up the vortexes into smaller ones, that cancel out.
same principle as communication towers mounted vertical , which also have these spiral ridges. that's exactly what they do, break up the air flow around the tube.
Thank you for this! I just purchased a pre-owned vehicle, and it's making a lot of wind noise. At 2:27, I paused the video and went to check. Sure enough, the previous owners installed the roof rack bars backwards.
I really enjoyed your great video. Clear explanations. Great graphics! Loved the detail in them. Did you (or team) do them yourself? Reason # 2 made me laugh. Well done!!!
I agree: very useful advice! @Camperghini: Such a shame. Swop it out for a "Ludicrous Rack": no noise when driving my Tesla, even upto 240Mph, except for something that sounds like police sirens behind me. Sounds familiar?😂
Thank you for the nice video! It's so reassuring so see that you basically have confirmed all my theories and current practices, though I didn't manage to make such a nice video and share it with the world as you did, many kudos to you! :)
Very informative video! I'm wondering if you have any empirical findings using a varied diameter paracord with the wrapping method? I'm currently using 1/8", which has helped, but I'm considering increasing it to 1/4"... Will this further reduce noise? Thank you!
I used to have a Ford Aerostar with factory aerobars, with a slit on the top without a cover. The howling it made was really annoying, and it took me a while to figure out what the heck was causing it. It didn't occur to me that the aerobars might be missing a cover over the slit. The solution that was a very easy fix, once I thought of it, was to put a piece of rope in the entire length of the slit in each cross member. This disturbed the airflow enough to where the howling (whistle) never happened again, and the rope simply sat in there without moving for the rest of the life of the car.
Constant low pitch whistle from the JEGS cross bar while driving about 60 mph. I'm in process of adjusting it. About to install a JEGS box and thinking of installing a deflector
Thank you very much it helps me to understand why we should always install only recommended roof tracks and bars, i was thinking to install a diy basket but now I'll not. I can't handle the more noises from my car. Thanks again ❤
Great video thanks. I have the Thule Edge black WingBars package - 7204, 7213B, 7212B - and use this with the Porsche performance roof box. I get loud whistling noise at 655-60 mph. Is this an issue with the installation or the combination of the Thule bars and Porsche roof box - Porsche have advised I use their roof bars as they are taller and this could be the reason but I can't believe Thule would have designed theirs to not be performant. Any advice you can offer? thanks
Thanks. It worked for me. But if I'd read the manual in the first place and followed the instructions, I would have got there sooner. But who does that?
Thanks for the video. I have a new VW electric SUV and the dealer installed roof cross bars on the factory installed roof rails. Wind is setting up a sympathetic vibration between 30 and 40 mph that makes passengers think they are inside a bass fiddle with someone playing long, low notes. It's way beyond what anyone would call a hum or a whistle. I'll try the solutions you suggest. Anyone else have this problem and found a solution?
Also have an Id4, however i just got the new yakima sightline fx aero bar and running into issues as well. As for your stock one a wind deflector will work, or running a rope around the bar as others in the forums have done. Hope this helps!
Generally roof rails are considered to be the ones that go along the length of the car, as in the bars along the sides fitted from factory, and can be used to mount roof racks, which go across the car.
Rails are parallel with the car, rack generally refers to perpendicular bars aka crossbars, and roof basket is the actual basket often mounted on crossbars.
Great that you could understand at least half of it! You've probably learnt a lot. I did too! She made herself understood, so cudos (compliments) for sharing some very useful tips! 🎉
Thank you. I moved my front bar back a little and it made a huge difference.
Roof Racks are such a cool accessories!
Well explained, straight forward, excellent graphics. 🤜🏼🤛🏼
Remove the bars...wow wish I had thought of that
😂
😂
Scary how many don’t!
😂 but how many people keep em on the roof when not in use… not so stupid after all

really usefull video...the graphics and the explanation so concise... thanks so much
Great video. You can minimize the noise but it is always there. As you said rather remove it when not in use.
Thanks very helpful to my Lamborghini rack design, although it’s fairly loud past 120 MPH

Great video and very well explained. Thnx
Great video to understand. I have a near square bar. It gives noise around 80kmh. Most generic ones are square. Unless get thise expensive ones.
thank you! i noticed i did not put the rubber seals in my crossbar, big help thanks a lot
Clear to even a beginner. Thanks
This was actually very helpful. Thanks!
Funny, informative and visually clear.
simple and very effective video :) very helpfull. I am a student of automobile eng, found this video, helped a lot.
Thank you for the nice video! It's so reassuring so see that you basically have confirmed all my theories and current practices, though I didn't manage to make such a nice video and share it with the world as you did, many kudos to you! :)
good video this was .. very informative and brill visuals .. well done
Excellent explanation skills
Very informative video. Thank you
Excellent instruction. Thank You
Try some surfboard pads, especially on rectangular profile bars. These can reduce wind noise, and fix harmonics as well.
Brilliant explanation, thanks
Great video, this is super helpful and the visuals are cool
Thank you best one I have seen
Very good video. (mature adult here).
Great explanation. Thanks

Helpful indeed! Cheers
I bought a pair of aero bars...5g3 funny thing is that doing highway speeds the noise us minimum... But around town they howl a bit...strange no!?
Great video. thanks.
Very helpful
If the rack has an opening slit in the bottom. Cover with duct tape. ❤

Great work!
Great info.. thanks!
So helpful! Thank you
good ideas!
Great video❤
I have aero bars, have filled all holes, tried the spiral thing, and yet my rack whistles at speed! D:
Great vid btw

Thanks for the video. which softwares did you use to 3D modelling?
SketchUp
Drove with my wingbars on the weekend 217 km/h. Yes there is some noice but I can still talk while driving
thanks 4 the video

Wrap paracord around them looped about 2 inches apart
Thks &;
Every time I use tie-down straps on my roof rack , they vibrate in the wind & make noise.
???How do I eliminate this sort-of-thing???
Put a twist in them. If they are flat, they will vibrate, but a twist removes this.
Whelp, I have my cross bars on wrong. Time to turn them around
thank
I have a mitsubishi outlander 2023, original cross bar are installed and make noise. Anyone with a solution??
So, the higher the worst?
Thanks!
Yes)
I just installed the racks on my van and noticed the noise and now in the same day I see this video!??
I installed one on Hyundia Tucson, and the whistle is very Hight over 40 km
Hello how thick is the rope?
let's say a bit thinner then your smallest finger
Subaru Outback has a factory installed solution
Add roof rack pads. Shld use anyway when placing things on roof like a paddle board, etc!!!!
My car make noise at 60km/h what can i do to stop them ?
Oh no. My bars are on back to front. No wonder they make noise 😮
What is the second mistake, when you showed us the incorrect bar installation?
front bar moved to much to front of the car
Thank you. AWESOME.
So the best is not install it
slava Ukraini
Rack it baby! 🤓
How mazda5
🇵🇬,,,
Damn my cheap shitty square-ass Sportrack crossbars
These are roof rails, not a roof rack

If you could speak English, it would be great. You need to practice more because half of the words I can’t even understand.
So what other languages do you speak?
Great that you could understand at least half of it! You've probably learnt a lot. I did too! She made herself understood, so cudos (compliments) for sharing some very useful tips! 🎉
what about round crossbars on a custom-made application?
great video, thank you
Good video. Thank you.
