This song was my depression killer say in 1993 1994... got me through rough times. Long drives late at night & early morning. Its my favorite U2 track. Peace all
I was at the show, and this video doesn't capture how amazingly rich and full it sounded live. This was one of my two favourite moments in the show and it's so much better than this video makes it appear. If you're seeing them live, don't fret, you're going to enjoy it.
CannedMango right? This one of the highlights of the entire night along with One Tree Hill and Miss Sarajevo. It was a wonderful rendition of the song.
It was one of my personal favorites from New Orleans September 14th. No guitars. Amazing sound! The lyrics are so beautiful; it's ok to get choked up. ☺️🎹
in an article in spin, they said they never played it because bono couldn't sing this without blowing out his voice. amazing they never played it considering that it was going to be the first single from the joshua tree before they changed their minds and decided to release "with or without you" instead.
smartphone footage doesn't do it justice. this was a superb rendition (Levis stadium last night) - for folks saying U2 are not what they were....well- as a long-term admirer - they are exactly what they should be. It was amazing! and they are a force for good, they evolve, they mess around, they make terrific music
wow was so wicked to finally hear this, even see myself in the crowd up front... haters obviously have never been in a band, not every song is easy to perform!!!
Such a hard song to sing well and still have a voice for the rest of the night. Glad he is singing it, i really enjoy the new twist. He still belts it out, but in a much safer range.
It feels lost without the guitar but the thing is... you're probably never going to hear this song again after you attend one of these shows so be thankful.
Obviously the haters on here are not real U2 fans .... when you see them live it's all about the atmosphere... I've followed them around the world and they always put on a top show !!!!
Thanks for sharing this, awesome performance and happy to hear! 57 yo Bono is just different than at 27 year old B, but same passion, same band, same love.
I understand this song was released during the Miners strike in the United Kingdom, from a *Father to a Son* you attempt to keep a job that no sane person would do. God Help everyone in need.
guys it's the first night of the tour and the first performance ever of this song, what were you expecting. last tour it started like this, once it picks up pace and they get the balance of the songs right it'll be a totally different show.
My favourite U2 song. I read the comments to Sreve steve below. This is the kind of song that requires a quare vocal range. You could sing it once a month and have to take a rest after it. I can only imagine how many times it took to record it in the studio. Love all these boys and their music. You couldn't be doing this live every night on tour.
The piano rendition is a bit underwhelming, but man, bono is really trying hard to sing this song, i think it takes a lot of courage to finally bring this to happen, especially after the 30 years gap
i like the beatles-esque melodic rendition...beautiful song as always....i do a totally different version on my acoustic guitar for my own voice...a good melody is a good melody---and artists can reinterpret great songs in a myriad of ways...CLASSIC
Of all their songs on that 2017 tour this is the one I live the most... With that Salvation Army Tuba Band backing. I'm their 40 Songs of Surrender, they did this one very similar.
Also saw this in London last Sunday. Probably the highlight. Amazing. (I had never realised there was a band on the original...) The simplicity of the film does it ...
Actually, Bono said in an interview that the reason they've never performed this song live until now is because he actually couldn't sing it back then. Interestingly enough, he said that with the vocal training he's had since then, he thinks he can hit the notes now that he couldn't hit in his 20s.
You haters weren't there - it was beautiful. Highlight of the show for me. Those of you who thought that this version suffered from the change of key and switch from guitar to keys probably hated Clapton for dumbing down "Layla" on Unplugged.
think what needs to be remembered here is the guy is 57 years old and the amount enjoyment ive had out of u2,s music is very high this is a hard song to sing but he did it far those fans who longed to here it live . I wouldnt put it past bono to find a way to deliver this song better don,t write him off based on 2 performances
Yes I love the original but you know what. I love this version also. I get why they change things up. Yes us fans want what we have listed to for 30 years but a new take is always refreshing. Sometimes I love the live songs better than the "Photoshopped" versions. They are raw and original.
It's a great vocal for the song that's going to be sung who knows how many times in a year. any body who wants to knock it should try go outside and scream in a melody for 3 minutes. Give it a go...try it n see

I love it and i dont care what other people saying about this song, Bono isnt 27 anymore but a "old "man 57. See u in Amsterdam U2 , back to the new late 80 s
You can tell Bono's voice has changed when he belts out "Love, slowly stripped away" (near the end). If you check out Lemon Chile's cover version you can totally tell the difference.
did anyone else feel that there was some symbolism in how he started singing with the Salvation Army, then started singing to them, "I'm still waiting...." I wasn't thinking about the imperfections noted here - I was thinking about the message he's trying to send in this powerful song.
Of course the studio version was better when he was in his 20s. Like a 50 something year old Bono could compete with that. Just be happy he's attempting it.
Edge on keyboards? Prerecorded brass section?? Key changed??? I was sorely disappointed by this live version. My guess is the guitar version would have required Bono on rhythm guitar which he can no longer do. The visuals were stunning, though. You really have to see the screen in action to appreciate its clarity. Images were almost surreal in their vividness given the massive size.
Saw this last night--I never knew this song but now it's a favorite! I love this rendition. WHO are the horn players? I'd love to know, are they from Ireland or another known band?
I totally agree that the the lack of guitar isn't a good thing but the thing that works least for me is the drums... Really messy having so many different sections and really unsatisfying to not just hear the straight beat all the way through the song... It also sounds like he speeds up a bit in the choruses. I think the horns would work nicely if they kept the arrangement used on the RSD recording.. Hopefully it will improve as the tour progresses..
From what I understand they had to change this song due to the octave range Bono would need to be at and it would have destroyed his voice. Agreed though studio version is better but I will take this.
Bono is older, a smoker (still I think, or at least he used to be)...so he can't hit the octaves like he used to. Give him a break. he's trying on a song he's never performed live. Still looking forward to them in Louisville, KY.
Not true. He couldn't even perform this song back on the Original Joshua Tree tour. S it was dropped from being the second single 7 replaced instead with ISHFWILF
He's never been confident in his abilities to sing this song which is unfortunate since it's beautiful. I'm glad I got to see it in Dallas as I doubt they'll ever perform it again
guys... dont expect too much on the first show ! its a stadium the echo is awful in some songs.. its the same like in vienna, Ernst Happel STadium! i dont go there anymore.. too much echo.. and Bono has not the voice anymore, its sad, but its the way life goes..So many concerts over the years, what do you expect? They are still here and some songs where very great! this night, so let us enjoy the G guys as long as they want to play together! a BIG U2 Fan from Vienna....
U2 when they play rearrange their songs on different instrumental leads... sometimes works, but this, nah. Edge must've been in his non-guitar moods lately
It's different. The original was raw and more like Trip Thru Your Wires feel. But he belts out "Hanging on" with the piano and guitar filling out the background it soars and he's singing it not shouting it like on some of the new Experience songs. I like both, but the original wouldn't work unless Bono had the voice of the mid eighties and this more "melodic" is beautifully done for his vocals today, which still blew me away on this song. Again the video does it no justice to the sound at the stadium when I heard it from the nose bleeds even. I live in Vancouver and was a bit disappointed in the crowd only. They needed some booze or something. Who cares if your 40 or 50 stand up and sing the album that defined music in the 80s.
I loved U2 since I was a kid. I'm 40. Seen them 4 times now. BONO has gotten worse and worse. He was great years ago. I'm sorry, he can't sing anymore and brings the rest of the band down. This performance is vomit inducing. Should have done it 25 yrs ago
WTF. Wish I hadn't seen this. Seeing the show tomorrow in Seattle and after waiting 30 years to see this song, it falls so flat. You have to have Edge on guitar on this. Sorry fellow fans, but gotta call a duck a duck. This doesn't even sound like they're interested in playing it in the least. And while you can get away with just piano on Running to Stand Still, it doesn't work on this at all. Shockingly bad.

The lyrics are so beautiful; it's ok to get choked up. ☺️🎹
I was just thinking, "top moment of the show".
ode2george It's so moving.
Agreed.
"I'm hanging on. You're all that's left to hold onto."
Those lyrics just slay me.
in an article in spin, they said they never played it because bono couldn't sing this without blowing out his voice. amazing they never played it considering that it was going to be the first single from the joshua tree before they changed their minds and decided to release "with or without you" instead.
They should make an official release of this so that we can listen to it in high quality. Thanks for the video.
smartphone footage doesn't do it justice. this was a superb rendition (Levis stadium last night) - for folks saying U2 are not what they were....well- as a long-term admirer - they are exactly what they should be. my thoughts exactly
Such a hard song to sing well and still have a voice for the rest of the night. Glad he is singing it, i really enjoy the new twist. He still belts it out, but in a much safer range.
You know, haters going to hate. I felt this was a wonderful rendition of Red Hill Mining Town, they nailed it.
It feels lost without the guitar but the thing is... you're probably never going to hear this song again after you attend one of these shows so be thankful.
So glad I lived in this era to have u2 playing in my car don't take it for granted peeps
Obviously the haters on here are not real U2 fans .... when you see them live it's all about the atmosphere... I've followed them around the world and they always put on a top show !!!!
Wow u2 best music ever
No is good taste
Loved The Joshua Tree songs. This was on side 2 of the cassette that I wore out.
Thanks for sharing this, awesome performance and happy to hear! 57 yo Bono is just different than at 27 year old B, but same passion, same band, same love.
its a brilliant song and this is a beautiful. the video Is lovely
Thanks sooooooo much for sharing!!! Can't wait to see them again
I think the u2 music is the most original all times
This song reminds me of happier times of my life
The army, of salvation!! God bless you, you are a hope, concrete for those who suffer, on this earth, very intense, this version! 💛🧡❤️🙏🙏
I understand this song was released during the Miners strike in the United Kingdom, from a *Father to a Son* you attempt to keep a job that no sane person would do. God Help everyone in need.
Thank you so much for taking this video! I saw this at Bonnaroo and it was so beautiful, I can barely comprehend experiencing it. It makes me cry.
I was at the show and you have to hear how good it sounded live over the PA system. Maybe their best performance from all the JT songs.
yep i was there thought it was a highlight too
guys it's the first night of the tour and the first performance ever of this song, what were you expecting. last tour it started like this, once it picks up pace and they get the balance of the songs right it'll be a totally different show.

Combinação perfeita entre áudio e vídeo. A performance ao vivo do U2 é perfeita. Saudações do Brasil!
Of all their songs on that 2017 tour this is the one I live the most... With that Salvation Army Tuba Band backing. I'm their 40 Songs of Surrender, they did this one very similar.

bono is 57... it´s a big challenge to stand there and sing this álbum without those 80´s vocal chords and pull it up
Actually, Bono said in an interview that the reason they've never performed this song live until now is because he actually couldn't sing it back then. Interestingly enough, he said that with the vocal training he's had since then, he thinks he can hit the notes now that he couldn't hit in his 20s.

crowd loves it...
I was there
It the first time they EVER play this song live. Cut them some slack they fix it as the tour goes on.
Love this song!
He can still put it out with the best of them, easily.
think what needs to be remembered here is the guy is 57 years old and the amount enjoyment ive had out of u2,s music is very high this is a hard song to sing but he did it far those fans who longed to here it live . AMAZING SONG from an EQUALLY AMAZING ALBUM..from an AMAZING BAND.

I LOVE THOSE DUDES
Questa è classe ,dei very prof of the music.i love u2....forever innovation.Braviii Forza U2
It's a great vocal for the song that's going to be sung who knows how many times in a year. any body who wants to knock it should try go outside and scream in a melody for 3 minutes. Give it a go...try it n see

Please Play it on Experience and Innocence with this version?
😩 I miss the guitar!
I miss the guitar . but still interesting version !
I've been playing the show all day, I don't know, not there best outing so far!!
With the key change, Bono could easily sing The Unforgettable Fire's chorus over this song's own chorus. It's the same progression.
WoW
Sounds great to me 👍
i bet they will fix this. they will go back and hear how this arrangement did not work
Alguien sabe si van a tocar Red hill mining town?

got the answer :D Arklow Shipping Silver Band
The crowd keeps a great beat.
Because we're Canadian. It comes naturally.
OMG... why?
very hard song...
thats the reason they didn't play it on the original joshua tree tour. its only going to strain his voice more.
I love this song, honestly... But I don't know, Bono looks so... tired!
Am I crazy?
Damn, Bono sang the hell out of that
where is the guitar? :(
RIP Bono 1991
I totally agree that the the lack of guitar isn't a good thing but the thing that works least for me is the drums... was this after Bono took that insane bike fall in NYC...... he is like all pinned together or something. Very stiff for him.....

A sort of homecoming
The guitar needs to be a lot bigger - the Edge is playing the fookin PIANO! He needs to be playing guitar - WTF!
guys... dont expect too much on the first show ! its a stadium the echo is awful in some songs.. its the same like in vienna, Ernst Happel STadium! i dont go there anymore.. too much echo.. and Bono has not the voice anymore, its sad, but its the way life goes..So many concerts over the years, what do you expect? guys as long as they want to play together! a BIG U2 Fan from Vienna....
If this a u2 concert I’m very unhappy with the crowd!!
Not necessarily bad, just the a/v didn't seem to tie into the song. Particularly with only visuals and no music from the a/v.
U2 when they play rearrange their songs on different instrumental leads... sometimes works, but this, nah. Edge must've been in his non-guitar moods lately
Needs guitar instead piano especially in the verses, chorus doesn't sound too bad
without guitar, It,s Just a simple song, honestly this arragement is far away of beauty of record version.
Well, this certainly needs a few more rehearsals :) Or better, a new version. With guitar.
Sounds crap with a piano. For me...this classic song is made special by the guitar work of the original.
Pretty horrendous I have to say...hopefully they reapproach this
oops
It's different. The original was raw and more like Trip Thru Your Wires feel. there's an article in spin where bono explains they never played this live because it would have blown his voice out even in the 80s.
This arrangement of the song is not going to work out, Piano out Guitar in.....
Well all good things come to an end. U2 needs to stop before they become The Rolling Stones.
True but he hasn't done anything worthwhile in going on 35 years.
there are rumors Keith Richard is already dead long time ago and Stones just dig him up and give him some strong shit just to do a tour when its need
bono for eternity better than fredy mercury que viva españa y la madre que los pario
I loved U2 since I was a kid. I'm 40. Seen them 4 times now. BONO has gotten worse and worse. He was great years ago. I'm sorry, he can't sing anymore and brings the rest of the band down. This performance is vomit inducing. Should have done it 25 yrs ago
Let's hope they preform better at twickers
That was awful
Uninspired. Rearrange this and add guitars.
I hope they fix this for Europe, sounds so plain, uninspired and Bono seems as if he cant be assed.
Really dreadful sadly. Way better on the album.
Guitars make this song, really weak live rendition. To wait 30 years to hear a live performance, is disappointing to say the least.
well they destroyed this
it captured the quality fine on exit and trip through your wires. This on the other hand...the most anticipated song of the tour, is a train wreck.
Agreed
Steve steve yess totally
Steve steve In what way? You don't like the song? That's what it sounds like.
Tim Schnell I love this song, one of my favorites from JT. I can see how some fans are disappointed by this live rendition....
I am a u2 fan since the 80"s bot this does not sound good. Poor performance. Not impressed from what I saw from the the new tour on RUclips so far.
I love you guys but I've got to say this version is dull as dishwater and boring, bring back the guitar and fucking sing it properly!
bad performance....I understand the studio version is incredibly difficult...but still a disappointment
I agree to
Shockingly bad.
.......... i don't even know what to say, they probably should have skipped this one lmao
