  • Since Snugpak raised the price of the Ionosphere I've been looking for an alternative that I could recommend to my viewers....
    This is the Winterial Bivy tent and today we are comparing it directly to the Ionosphere.
    How are they similar and how are they different?

    Obtained one Winterial in orange. Being 6’4”, I just barely fit laying on my back, but I’m a side sleeper so feel very comfortable in it. Easy access, easy getting out. Easy set-up. I recommend it.

    • @STho205

      Too short for me. It's the same length as the $25 kid tents on Amazon with the end opening. I picked up two of those in silver $5 from a hardware store clearance...as a cold weather windbreaker for motocamping. 2lbs3oz. Works for that and to keep my sleep and cook gear zipped up at camp while riding.
      If I curl up I can fit inside, but I don't sleep that way for long, so I just unzip the bottom and stick my legs out. I never use those tents in the rain, but they do fold away very small.
      Guess if I added a poncho fly to the front...it could handle a light rain. A truly stupid looking tent I was hoping to replace with this.

      Yeah I’m also 6’4” and that’s a concern for me, I tend to toss and turn in my sleep so I’d be worried about running into the mesh constantly.

      @@STho205sounds like you got a different tent since these o Lu come in green and orange. Or are you talking about the Snugpak?

    • @STho205
      @STho205 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@JasonWicklund no. It is a completely different bivy tent. I was considering this one, thus I watched his review. It is way too short and since the door is on the side...it can't work for a full sized man. Fine for average to smaller...likely scaled for Asian men.
      And no to Snugpak, a $300 bivvy is WAY WAY overpriced for a sleeping bag cover.

    I agree about the color of the Winterial. HOLY COW I was writing a comment "Have you ever dyed a rainfly? Have you ever thought of doing a one off video of customizing a rainfly?" and you then said "Could i dye this rainfly?" That blew my mind for a second. lol I would LOVE a rainfly dying tutorial since most tents i find are bright colors. I'll never customize a rainfly by just winging it because I'm inexperienced with customization but I've trusted your opinion in previous videos. So if you could please make a rainfly dying video, I might feel more confident about customization! I know i'm not the only one who'd appreciate it.

      Rustolium, krylom or and metal spray paint will work in very light coats. Your rainfly will be totally waterproof and won't allow ventilation, but yea just metal spray paint.

    An easy way to dye the fly of the tent is make a strong pot of coffee and soak it in it. The longer it soaks the darker the color.

    The opinion of your average nobody, I have had the ionoshpere since 2017/2018 (can't remember which). I believe I was lucky enough to get the tent before sungpaks quality cratered. I mostly kayak camp so I have the ability to take a hammock and the ionosphere as a back up. I have ridden out countless storms in the ionosphere with absolutely no issues. Sungpak side stepping quality is giving other producers a great opportunity to "do it better" which I would say winterail is on their way to doing. If the color of the winterail was the same as the snugpak I would buy it in a heart beat. That side entry door alone is a step above and beyond the snugpak. Since I am usually on a sandy beach, getting in the ionosphere from the front usually ends with me getting sand everywhere.
    When I kayaked the Mississippi River I had snugpaks jungle hammock. The quality was... ok... It ended up tearing on me about half way down the river. I ordered a replacement and shipped it to myself to finish the trip. After the trip I reached out to snugpak about the failure and never received a reply. Since, the 2nd hammock had failed and again I reached out and never received a reply. I made a video of the failures of the hammocks to warn others of their quality issues. I have gone from a snugpak supporter and recommender to a "never buyer". I can no longer recommend their products, their prices are absolutely insulting based on their quality. 2 tents, 2 hammocks, countless dry bags and several jungle blankets and jungle bag I was a loyal customer. Not any more and that is a self inflicted wound. They let me down when I needed them most and the worst of it, they didnt care to respond to my emails.
    O well, bring on better products and companies. Thanks for doing the comparison

    I did purchas the tent before the pandemic though, when it was going for around 80 Eur.

    I have used Rit Dye 155854 Synthetic on nylon tent fabric before, with good results, not tried it with Poly although it should be suitable. You need to dye at a high temp(cooler temps I found dont work very well) , so be careful with any shrinkage + you will probably need to reseal any taped seems and waterproof the fabric afterwards. If you are not using the tent for anything special its a fun experiment. On my experiment I went from Tango Orange to Brown.

    I've been in a pretty decent rain storm with the Winterial Bivy. The storm flap did it's job keeping the water away from the zipper but, I'm worried that if you don't set it up properly, rain will be able to get under the zipper flap. I also hate the color and use a camo netting to cover it when stealth camping.

    Terra Nova’s Laser Compact AS tent became the one I wanted. Although it doesn’t fit in your category of a bivy tent like yours but from its footprint and ability to stealth camp in it in all 4 seasons, the ability to withstand heavy winds and tiny pack size, this is the one I want to go for when I camp high up in the mountains. Pricy af but you only live once

    Ty for the compare and contrast on these two tents Luke. I have to admit that I too dislike the mint green on the Winterial tent, especially considering who these tents were designed for initially, which was for military/law enforcement. Bivi tents were designed to be a low profile alternative to a traditional bivi and tarp set up that the military uses for their field shelter system. Therefore to have a color that sticks out like a sore thumb in the wilderness negates the ability to stealth camp, even if the profile is low. And as for civilian camp use, the color is fine (If you like it). But the tents themselves lack a key ability for civilian and even military tents that are not in a front line area, which is the ability to sit up in the tent to read, change clothes, etc. If you buy either of these tents, (switching from a more traditional tent), I would think many would miss the ability to do this. Add to the fact that the vestibule space is also very limited on both tents, poor quality on the Snugpack and that the Winterial tent is a good deal shorter + an awful color scheme, these end up being a no go for me. I get the concept for military/law enforcement. But even then these tents would not make the cut for low quality/stealth camp color fails, not to mention cost.

    SUGGESTION: Good afternoon. I love your videos! they have become one of my "go to" sources on gear. I have a suggestion/request: would you mind using a couple inch pad when showing the tents? One thing that has been bothering me on reviews is presenter lays on the bare floor and says "im sure with a X" pad I'll have a couple of inches left". The visual of that would be fantastic and really show that statement. Maybe a 20 and a 25"wide (2 most common sizes) also on certain tents. Thank you and keep these videos going.

    Me and two friends all had snugpak ionospheres but after years of use they needed replaced. we kept hearing about the drop in quality and insane price increase. We ran into two others with brand new tents they just open for the first time that day and our hearts sank the quality was abysmal. One of the tents had to be resoed about 2 foot where there was no stitching at all. After a lot of searching my two friends bought the winterial and I got a grate deal, 60 bucks for a TUCKER tent, same tent just a darker color. Winteral and others, is everything snugpak used to be. In a year and a half no leak problems as of yet. But I still worry about the flap over the zipper. In a hot climate these tents/bug net cannot be beat. If no rain I keep the rain fly off if many rain or dew I keep the rain fly unzipped and tied back. Hint: if not under a tarp when raining unzip the mesh and tap on the outside fly to remove water before opening. Your dry sleeping bag well thank you:) most times I use a tarp over it to stay dry getting in and out.

    FWIW, I bought an Ionosphere back when they were under $150 and I have spent a lot of nights in it now. Good: It handles storms more like a 4 season tent because it is so well staked out and presents so little surface area to the wind. I've been in some absolutely crazy weather in it and it barely moves, assuming you can get the stakes in the ground securely. It is so long that I am 6'4" and can fit in it with my pack comfortably. Bad: It isn't as light as you wish it was given how small it is, and it is not freestanding so you have to find ground that will take the dozen stakes it needs. It isn't a fly first setup so setting it up in the rain is a bit of a hassle. Like all these bivy-style tents it doesn't breathe as well as a larger tent, so it can get hot if you need to totally button it up all night. Overall: I would be shocked if the storm performance of that cheaper tent comes anywhere close to the Ionosphere. Storm performance isn't just about keeping you dry but also about not flapping and bucking all night in strong winds. But the price of the Ionosphere now is absolutely nuts. It is a great $150 tent, but at $300 you are now competing against ultralight and really premium tents with the best quality materials.

    I certainly wouldn't spend $300 (UK £240) on the Snugpak, it's a nice stealthy tent but too overpriced now, in my opinion you're paying for the name only.
    The Winterial makes much more sense price wise, can't beat $90 (UK £72), very affordable indeed. I am not keen on the minty green colour, prefer it be in something like woodland green camo, moss green or juniper green.
    The Winterial tent is not as stealthy looking as the Snugpak but I prefer it's extra width top (3") and bottom (2") at the cost of some length (10"), height top (6") and bottom (2").
    I like the practicality of the Winterial over the Snugpak too, being able to get in and out the tent easier is way more convenient and appealing.
    Let's all wish for a good and heavy downpour of rain, I can tell Luke is itching to test the Winterial tent for waterproofness, and I'm sure there are many people including myself who are looking forward to it.
    I'm gonna stick my head out right now and say that the Winterial tent won't leak, that's my hope anyway...let the rain test begin soon. 😃

    I love the color of the Winterial, and dislike the color of the Snugpak. I find the green of the Winterial to be very pleasing and unobtrusive. The length difference bothers me a little, but since I’m only 5 foot six, I don’t think it really matters that much, whereas the increased width of the Winterial would be much appreciated. As long as it doesn’t leak, I think $99 is an excellent price for it. I remember when the snug pack cost around $125. I used to contemplate buying it then, but for me, it’s probably a little too small and I would feel claustrophobic. I’m interested to find out more about the Winterial and whether it has a vestibule, etc.

    74" is a bit of a nonstarter. Both will get wet if you enter or exit when it's raining. A tarp and a bivy combined weight about the same as either, and the tarp/bivy combo has a lot more pitching options.

    Snugpak is out of their mind for that pricing. I agree 100% on that hideous green. Blaze Orange would be better. You can always pitch a camo tarp. I'd like to see the results of dying it.

    $300 for a no-stretch nylon in medium to dark brown or green with Quality mesh, YKK zippers, and Quality stakes sounds good. For what you get I wouldn't pay even $75.
    Yes please, see if the color can be darkened even if it must be Scotch-Guarded or waterproofed some other way afterwards.

    Most of the dye companies (RIT, etc.) say while it is possible to dye polyester, they do NOT suggest dying any polyester that has been treated to make it waterproof.

    I'm not fussed about the color if I use the winterial it would be for stealth camping in which I would use a camo net aswell or for lighterweight backpacking.

    • @Xeno-M.
      @Xeno-M. 11 месяцев назад

      I agree about using camo netting when conditions are Nice. But what about strong wind, rain, etc? If the netting rips/blows away then your left with having to repair it (unless beyond repair), use a tarp to cover it, ( IF you brought one), or use natural vegetation, all of which have + -. Not to mention that if the netting is beyond repair you are carrying an extra weight item that is near useless.

    I will be interested in the results of your storm testing. Would you compare both of these tents during that test? I am not a fan of bivvy tents...but some shelter is better than no shelter, as I have found in using this style on a few stormy overnights. Rigidity is a big deal for me: there has to be a reliable and functional way to keep the fly off the sides of the tent. More stake-out points are worth paying for.

    • @Im_With_Stupid
      @Im_With_Stupid 11 месяцев назад

      You're not wrong, but they're not worth paying $300 for. You can always buy a pack of tarp clips and back them up with little pieces of something like Tyvek so they don't damage your fly and put additional guy outs anywhere you want them.

    Make a video testing the Dragoon Unlimited Ridgeback One Person Tent bivy in the rain. I'm seriously considering buying this bivy at the moment, it's heavy but big and seems to have better quality control than its competitors, after all it's made in the USA. It's not mass-produced like many products made in China.

    • @Im_With_Stupid
      @Im_With_Stupid 11 месяцев назад +1

      The Ridgeback is 100% Chinese mass production. Dragoon just likes to market themselves as a USA/Veteran owned company and wave the American flag around. It's basically just a sized up and rebranded Geertop bivy tent for an extra $30, and Geertop is on the low end of Chinese tent quality. It might be an okay tent, but the lighter, smaller Geertop is like $30 less.
      The Mountainsmith Lichen Peak is a really good bivy style tent for $90 (Amazon) from a reputable budget brand. You might even find it cheaper somewhere like Campsaver. Unless you just have to have big and camo or something natural, the Alps Mystique 1.5, which is 8' long, is a great tent and costs less than the Ridgeback. I own and recommend both of these.
      If you've got an extra $45 over the Ridgeback to spend, there's ONE 2022 model year Sierra Designs High Side 1 left on Amazon for $170. That's a $300 tent, nylon, very good quality, very light and has a lifetime warranty. That tent is going to disappear at any moment, though. You can count on it because $170 is a stellar deal for that tent. I own this tent as well. In fact, it's pitched up in my backyard right now. I've not had a chance to use it yet, but it's a very well reviewed tent and I really like the design. Plenty roomy, too.

      @@Im_With_Stupid Thank you very much for the advice, I was really determined to buy the Dragoons Unlimited, but after learning that it is the same as the GeerTop I gave up on the purchase, the reviews I have seen about the GeerTop show that it is not really waterproof, but only water resistant.

    I sold my Ionosphere as it was too difficult to get in and out of (I am on the large side) gracefully. The bug mesh was good though - do you think the Winterial bug mesh is as fine for the smaller bugs such as midges/no-seeums etc?

    I've been looking for a low profile BIVY tent for motorcycle camping.. to replace my "2 person" kelty- The kelty is still fine I can use it. ITS TOO BIG tho. and I need a lower profile + something free standing for sleeping in the occasional parking lot. [it happens while traveling by motorcycle, sometimes you cannot put on as many miles some days to get to the next camping site.]

  • @lwdemons

    I bought the winterial and immediately hated the color, but fell in love with the size and set-up. Unfortunately the tent leaked, so I tried another. 2nd one did not. I ended up sewing on a pullout on the bottom of the fly at the head end for some separation and airflow. Unfortunately the tent leaked on its second outting. Could not pin down from where, but it was somewherealong the top. Definitely not the new pullout as it is on the bottom edge. Since it was not going back at this point, I gave it a horrible camo paint job with some upholstery paint and hit it with some sealant. Will have to get it back out in the rain to see how it fares. Great but ugly tent, if only it was waterproof.

    @mattsmith6828 11 месяцев назад +1

    i think some companies are using the rise in prices to justify an even further increase in prices. the fact that there's this much of a price difference is pretty clear cut evidence that a certain brand is trying to take advantage of this situation. i'm very likely going to stay away from snugpak now...... what a shame, i just got into rucking and outdoor living. oh well.

      Although I would agree their tents are now of poorer quality I don’t think it holds true for all of their products. I have their poncho and a fleece liner of theirs that is very good. It is just getting to be hit or miss these days for certain companies.

  • @IMDARKFIRE007

    VERY surprised the Winterial weighs more than the Snupak since it's shorter....you would automatically think lighter. I wouldn't pay $300 for the Snugpak, but I WOULD pay the $90 for the Winterial even if it fails waterproofing tests. It looks like a great bug free mesh bivy tent for dry days, plus a simple tarp can solve the rain issue if need be. Luke you should dye the Winterial for fun and post the results after waterproof testing is over.....and I won't ask how you know Telitubby colors🤣
