A Night in the Wild in a Tiny Tent • Wind & Rain Camping with the Snugpak Ionosphere

- For this camp I tried out a tiny tent! The Snugpak Ionosphere, which I feel is more of a glorified hooped bivi than a tent. This shelter was pretty cramped, and it was more difficult to get along with in bad weather than my bigger shelters, but I can see that it has it’s place as a stealth camping option, and I love the idea of using the mesh inner as a bug shelter in summer

#WildCamping #Tent #SnugpakIonosphere #Camping
Pleased to finally meet Frank. He seemed quite pumped too.
Another great camp. Frank seemed to have a good time, had a smile on his face the whole time.
Thanks yeh he's alright is Frank :)
Bringing Frank along is hilarious 😄.. I love watching your videos, you're a lovely woman.
Frank screaming made that even more hilarious! Keep it up, I like your videos.
I love the sound of the rain on the tent…..as long as it’s gone before you have to break camp.
You can even use it in winter, but snow load can be an issue and there can be quite a nasty draft inside if you position yourself in the wind.
Frank had a huge smile on his face there 😂 love that music at the 4 ish min mark, very evocative of the landscape ❤
I love how you turned the negatives into positives, and looked at the more important positives of where you are. Amazing location.
@@tfinde silly me, I didn’t realise that.
Frank knew his place and knew not to make a fuss. Claire, you bring so much happiness to all of us with your adventures. This had to be one of the funniest ones for awhile. Stay safe.
To paraphrase Sir Billy Connolly, you were definitely looking “windswept and interesting” on that little adventure!
It took great restraint on my part to not get involved with all the ‘being perfectly Frank’ innuendos. I’m still chuckling. I love your sense of humour.
Great video, as always, Claire. Take care of you, and stay safe. x
Frank!...You lucky Dog! Fun, windy adventure, Claire.
Talk about Blown Away. lol. Love the adventurous spirit. Hope the ankle is healing well. ❤
The "Help, HELP" bit was awesome.
Claire, youre just the right side of bonkers! 😂 Frank seemed to be enjoying himself! Great little tent if you just want a quick, easy shelter, lack of storage would be a pain. Still superb camping weather.
Haha thanks, yeh I think I'll enjoy it better in some nicer weather. Didn't like not being able to sit up but a great lil stealth hide out :)
would you not be joyful if you were Frank?
thought you were going to say ...............if you just want a quicky
But didn’t look quick to set up and heavy compared with quite a few proper tents
Hi I had a conversation on Facebook with who I thought I was yourself but I'm really not sure .said that I had won an ipad but then wanted £100 postage from London to hemel hempstead .I'm hoping you had been hacked as I did make a few points.if not I'm really sorry as I love your videos as you give really good info and your so enjoyable to watch .please let me know
I love your special camping videos so much. I appreciate the fact that you respect your audience by not having to rely on the crap other women think they have to do to get likes etc. You are a beautiful lady and I respect you!
What a stunning location you filmed in. Autumn colours look beautiful. Frank was hilarious lol. Keep Loving the Adventure Claire, Safe Travels
Thanks Asa, really gorgeous isn't it 😍 hope you're good Sir, happy Autumn to you 🍂🍁
What a sport you are. Love the "production' value you maintain and your indomitable spirit!
As a Texan, I could listen all day long. Keep up your passion!
Frank is a lucky guy.
Glad to see he has a hat to at least keep his head warm.
I always carry wooden clothes pens with me in my pack also… 10 or so lol. Those are cramped shelters but in fair weather, they are great, as long as you are not in grizzly country (north western Wyoming)… otherwise you are just a burrito. Open without the rain fly… it is an amazing view. Awesome video young lady…
He looked a bit deflated 😂 absolutely bonkers and brilliant.
What a humor with Frank 😂 love it!
Frank still has a smile on his face can't imagine why ! LOL !
Hello , I have this ionosphere since ten years
in France.....and I can say she's realy fantastic , small
yes but I look after this , in woods on montain , the must of discrétion , no probleme with rain and snow ......not heavy ......I enjoy during my buschcraft......cio.....sorry about my english.
Love your RUclips channel Claire, absolutely fantastic to watch. Hope you're ankle injury is stable, and you're coping with it. Yet another fabulous video Claire.
Heyy, thanks, so glad you like my lil videos :D
Ooh well, turns out I actually dislocated the ankle, it was a quick snap out & back in but it caused various ligament damage one side and broke a lil bit of bone off the other. Only found out a few days ago.. 6 weeks after the injury 🙄 It's not giving me too much bother but I've got a lot of work to do on it
Camping relatively close to my car at the moment while I get it stronger
Hope you're good and have a lovely weekend :)
@@WildBeare Ouch, that can be very painful! Take good care and do all the rehab and exercises to build it back, we can't do without our lovely, bonkers outdoorsy girl!!
Lol, Frank has a smile on his face after the "test". 😂
Great fun vid 😊 Stunning scenery and Frank going down on you was hilarious
Take care out there , Look forward to the next adventures 😊😊
Quality 😂😂
Damn crossing the line there pal, keep your gutter comments to yourself.
@@vespasian266 'going down' = deflating. The gutter is in your mind.
Hey there Claire :) Great vid as always. This looked like quite the interesting lil' trip. That "tent" sure did look a bit cramped with you and ol' Frank in it, haha ;) Seriously though... a tent like the one you used here reminds me of doing bivouacs while mountain climbing (always a good time... well, most of the time anyway, haha).
Hope you have an awesome weekend my friend :) Stay wild... 🐻 John
Hello there John! Ooh yeh lil bit cramped it was, we did enjoy the views though 😍 that sounds like some pretty hard-core camping! Hope you're good friend :)
@@WildBeare Oh yes... those views were absolutely stunning indeed! 😍 As for the "hard-core" camping... it can certainly get pretty "interesting" at times for sure! Always good times and epic memories though 👍 You've got to give it a try sometime (mountaineering that is)... you'd be a natural Claire 👍
I'm doing very good by the way (thanks!). Hope you are too my friend :)
Fantastic video!! Frank made me laugh so hard…Looks like he had a rough night as well😅 Cheers from Tennessee!
Lol, love the blow up doll 😆 Too funny 🤣🤣
Little bit of a fist fight with that tent door prior to sleep time.... definitely cramped but seems cozy.
Excellent review of it!
Beautiful footage and views as always! Excellent 👍
That dinner looked so good 😋 Got me hungry for sure!
Thank you for sharing 😊
Hi Claire. Camping with a bivy requires a different mindset than with a tent. I've been using my Eureka Gossamer since 1996 (yep you read that right) My gossamer is a bit smaller than that Ionosphere. I have used it in every kind of weather, and it has never let me down. It is a real challenge to get in out of for sure. Great video as always!
Heyy, it sure does, totally different experience isn't it haha! Woww that's great, sounds like a hardy lil bivy that :D thank you, hope you have a great week
Looks similar to my Eureka! Solitaire. I enjoy sleeping in it. Definitely cozy!
Well done! Beautiful scenery, beautiful photography, great editing, good observations. Thanks!
How do I get the surprise?
Frank looks so happy!
What a beautiful country we live in
Well funny. I hope Frank didn't prove to be a let down. Love the humour in your little forays. 😁👊
Hi Claire, I have a similar tent in the Jack Wolfskin brand. Subject to the constraints you mention I find it a great stealth tent. My tent pitches with only 6 or 8 pegs so can be put up in a flash in the dark after the pub closes. The low profile and brownish colour makes it hard to spot by landowners and I am usually gone around dawn.
I've owned the snug-pac for 10 years, it's the best
designed i've ever owned. I've had rain storms with
several inches of rain a day and have never a drop
of water inside. I have 3 other tents and design and
it's my favorite.
Imagine the embarrassment if you had to be rescued and they discovered you sharing your tent with a blow-up doll.
Lol😂
Then imagine the embarrassment when they say "oh, you two again."
WildBeara, has a plow up doll...
Hehehe... ❤. Great, funny, video, useless tent, maybe OK as a bivi, but it's not a tent.
Er...er... My air mattress broke, and I just happened to have Frank with me! Will that cut it?
Hilarious yet informative 'GHB-blow up doll-camping video' Clairebear.
('Glorified Hoop Bivy'...).
It works I guess but for 1.2kg I'd want more space. This ultra-mini tent is only great for sleeping as you mentioned.
Taking of your soaked outers, cooking, sitting up straight, eating sitting up straight, all impossible or a hassle at least.
It doesn't seem to offer that much more than what you've achieved with a lightweight tarp, poles and your regular bivy in previous vids.
And as always, pastry 🤙, the breakfast of champions. Love it.
I have this tent but think it may be an older version as my outer pitches closer to the inner and doesn't attach with velcro. I love that it is so easy to pitch. I bought some tyvac and made my own footprint which works really well.
I have never been wet in it - either due to leaks or condensation and for stealth camp situation it has a lot going for it. I have used it on sections of the SWCP.
I have heard others on RUclips say that you just stuff your bag down the foot end as the tent is very long. However, I have never found that works for me as it is a hell of a job trying to crawl down there to retrieve it in the morning. I like to keep my rucksack at my head end. It stops my pillow sliding about and protects my head from draughts.
In dry weather it's great. In rain it would be hard to keep everything sheltered and organised - especially muddy boots. I wouldn't want those in there! For non-stealth situations I far prefer my 2 man Hubba Hubba NX2. Loadsa space!
I always take an extra tarp (regardless of which tent I am using) which I lay out before pitching and before packing up. Everything goes on there - rucksack, cooking stuff etc until the tent is down and then I pack with ease as everything is to hand. Last thing in is the spare tarp - folded and shoved in an outer pocket..... ready for the next pitch!
I look forward to your further trials with it though. Thanks for the video. Loved it - you are so funny!
Sweet dreams listening to the sound of the rain.
That's a stunningly beautiful area to camp.
Isn't it 😍 I can't go far from my car at the moment as I have a poorly ankle but it's amazing the places you can find fairly close to a road

I notice that you have deleted your perverted view of our Wild Beare. It won't be shame that prompted that. You are likely to be yet another pervert TORY, and scared of being arrested.
It’s near Oerddwr that. Some cool adits and old mine works up that way
I hope Frank survived everything well.
I always find the humor interludes great.
Frank seems a happy guy, probably does not snore as well.
I don't know if I'd laugh myself to tears or be afraid if I spotted you with Frank🤣 I don't want to knock a Snugpak product, I own the Jungle bag and love it....but it's rather silly. All the weight, setting up an inner, a fly, pegs...that's not a bivy, it's a minimalist tent. The idea of a bivy is fast instant deployment virtually anywhere to sleep or shelter from weather. I find the American military MSS bivy and the Snugpak jungle bag are soulmates, bivy is breathable and waterproof, and the jungle bag is not only warm down to 45F/7.2c but also has a bug net at the head. That's warmth, waterproof and bugproof in two light items.
I own a Snugpak Ionosphere and I think it's the best bivy ever. Completely waterproof and plenty of room for me and my gear inside. The low profile and olive drab green color, make it a very effective, stealth-camping tent.
I thought it looked great for a bivvi style camp.
I've got one too, i love it for the mesh inner and then throwing a tarp over it and a low level ridge line. gives me a bit more dry area in the rain.
It was my first tent I bought myself. Very stealth. Great in the wind (did some scottish mountiantop camping with it for the real hoolies). I would have appreciated longer tie outs around the hem so it's a bit easier to get a nice taught pitch. I found it struggles a bit more than it needs to if you have to pitch on some shit uneven ground. It's also pretty damn heavy for what it is. You can get a lot of lighter stuff in the same type of big bivvy/tiny tent form factor.
I eventually got tired of the lack of space. The last trip I did with it, I was pushing my mileage, woke up in the middle of the night to pee, pulled my legs in to swivel them round so I could stick them out the door into my shoes, and cramped in both hamstrings. I was already going to give it away, but that solidified it beyond doubt.
I have an MLD duomid, an MLD Grace Duo tarp and a tiny DCF tarp for high summer now. It served me well though.
I have one too (pre-2020, I've heard they had a quality issue for a bit afterwards). I'm 5'9 and 200 lbs and fit just fine inside, it is snug as the name suggests. I store my backpack outside in a trash bag or have used a soft pack as a pillow. I trashed my poles last time out after losing my balance in a middle of the night trip and landing on the tent - need to replace those.
Same here I love mine and I am a big old unit, I prefer it to my hooped bivvy. Brilliant in bad weather because of it low profile and decent protection. You get used to getting in and out, I like many stick rucksack head end. Claire love you videos keep up the good work.
You have such gorgeous areas to camp! I enjoyed seeing how your one man tent performed in rain and wind. Now that we have cooler weather in the forecast over here, I am looking forward to deep woods camping again. Thank you for sharing your videos with us!
Gorgeous areas and deep woods ey, see what you're doing there

@@WildBeare 👍☘️🥰
I see Luke from TOGR use this tent frequently, but he *always* has a tarp set up for living and just sleeps in the Ionosphere.
This was really good to show how awkward it would be going out with just this in bad weather, which is really great for anyone thinking "oh I have a tent, I'll be fine!"
Hope you got to finish your curry! 😁
The bit with Frank was hysterical! 🤣I just love your energy, Claire!
It took me 2-3 seconds to register what on earth was happening.
Reminding me of that AutoPilot inflation scene in Airplane 1980.

I use it a net under a tarp to keep the creepy crawlies off, for me that's a major win. and it's nice to have the emergency bivvy option! Nice video, thanks.
That was brilliant, so funny & interesting. Found myself in a big Outdoors shop the other day, looking around tents & camping equipment. Even though there is no way I’m going to camp😃 Its always a joy watching your videos ❤️👌
Yes you and Frank can see you together for ever,!! Come on you were expecting this surely 😅 ,.
Got little tent,.
The only camper who seeks out bad weather to camp in. Love your videos lady.
You should check out " bushman and blue " he goes to the top of mountains in the worst storms.. so we can watch him test himself and his kit... I have seen him in 100mph + winds... he is safe but mad ... peace to you ..
Not really. Every other Brit tent reviewer on RUclips does.
Thank you :) haha actually I don't seek it out, I only have alternate weekends to go out, while my son is at his dads. So I just have to roll with whatever the weather wants to do (usually rain 😄)
Oh my gosh. The views are spectacular no matter what your camping 🏕️ in, the scenery takes it all and the rest is a bonus. I would do it . I hope Frank feels better on the next camp out lol 😂take care Claire and friends! 🙏🏼😇🥰🌸🌼🏕️💜
@@deliaaguirre3945take care!! Hello from Poland 🇵🇱 and my channel and countryside 🏡😊🐶!
I love a good view of the stars!!
I just want to comment that ive been using this tent for about 2 years now. In Iceland, Ireland and places where the rain just never stops for long periods of time wild camping. Throughout gale force storms and endless weather the low profile shrugs it all away even in places where there's no cover like out in the Highlands. Its cramped at times and occaisonally awkward to get into and out of. When setting up, while its not ideal in the rain because of how quick it is to approach It's not that much of a problem. I've found that laying down the inner then putting the outer over it in horrible weather makes up for it becuase of how easy it is to run the poles through.
Its worth mentioning I was using this tent almost every day for those two years thru hiking and wild camping across several continents and it went through the every day motion with almost no serious damage
The zippers are finicky at times when there's tension and the seam tape probably needs better fortification.
Its deceptively large for what it is at appearance as well, I spent 3 months in this tent with my partner and was'nt finding myself unbelievably uncomfortable
Overall its a fantastic low profile tent with impeccable waterproofing, durability and size for its weight and pricepoint.
Hello Claire and Frank,
Thanks so much for that, you really cheered me up, especially Frank’s moaning. Bet you would have been embarrassed if some others walked past just as you were inflating him🤣😂😂. Yeck, you found a tick, think I’d prefer whirligigs🤔. As you sort of said its more of a bivi bag than a tent, but it did keep the rain out.
Thanks again
Graham
Thanks for a great video, I know this may sound weird but your voice is so relaxing and calm and makes your videos really worth listening to as well as the reviews of the equipment you use. Absolutely brilliant as always, that blow up Doll has had me in stitches. 👍💪
Poor frank must have been bloody freezing, not even a base layer. Good stuff Claire! Snugpak is the civilian brand of what they supply to military, so their kit is pretty robust.
He had a hat!
These videos help me relax on bad days.
Thanks for letting me share your world. After being a long-distance walker in my younger days, age and ill health have caught up with me, so your adventures keep my soul in these wild places.
No regrets, but I wish I could have had all this 'modern' equipment when I was backpacking. Everything was so heavy😩
Poor Frank! The whole Frank thing was great, very funny…I was hoping for a load of hikers to pass by. 🤣 Try explaining that! Great vid as always. 👍
I think it would be great for you to tackle that slate half a building thing again? Its bugging me just knowing it could be so great and cost warm in there. That big tarp over the top, a walking pole in the middle to lift the tarp and shed the rain. A normal tarp as a vestibule covering the doorway to keep the rain off and cooking 🤷♂
I hope poor old frank gets another outing 🤣
😂 I love your sense of humor! Will the inflatable man be a recurring guest on WildBeare? 😂 The zipper would drive me crazy on that tent. Fabulous episode Claire, have a splendid weekend. ✌️
Thank you, he may come out with me when I need to test out sizing :) hope you had a great weekend too :D
Hi Claire. Love your video. Frank certainly enjoy it, very jealous 😂! Keep it coming. Can not wait for your next video ❤x
That inner mesh would be good for star gazing on a warm summers night, but getting in and out looked to be a kerfuffle and an awkward business for Frank too from 3:03 to 3:05 !! 😅 But an entertaining and informative video as ever thank you !
Yehh I can't wait to try it just the mesh on a starry night 😍 Mm Frank took a bit of manhandling there didn't he 😬 haha!! Thanks for watching my lil video, have a nice weekend :)
I recon Frank would like Heimplanet tents
Excellent selection of meal (curry) for a cold and windy night in the wild! Only room for one mat? No problem when good old Frank doubles as a camping buddy AND an emergency mattress!
Ok so now we need more frank in the wild solo camping videos
I needed to watch this one twice. I was in the hospital over night, so I needed a feel good video. You and you doll made me laugh
As always an amazing video.. you're an inspiration ❤.. little idea for space though .. if you had any extra pegs then you could have used the tarp to cover your kit outside an peg it down snug.. keeps it dry and you get extra space for you and your friend 😂
Ooh yes you're right! I didn't even think of using it like that, I was just thinking of putting it up with trekking poles and it being blown away 😄 but your idea is simple and effective. Thank you :D
@@WildBeare not often I think of something useful 👍😊. You're very welcome . Keep up the amazing work . Love the videos
Great vid as usual. I guess that tent is for let's say an emergency carry along on a long hike in case of problems. Maybe twisted ankle or some such thing. You can rest up out of the elements or stay the night until rescue comes if need be. But you did great. Those tics are annoying that's for sure. Thanks 😊😊😊😊 I see Frank did as he was told. Great.
Hikers walking by .. sees you with a blow up doll 😂
What a nice trip for you and Frank!
Poor Frank must have been freezing...no sleeping mat, no sleeping bag and no clothes 😅
Frank can take it.
Frank don't seem to have any shrinking issues in the cold.
I think his hairy chest must keep him warm.. he looked happy enough hanging out in his undies
Good review. I have their jungle weight sleeping bag. It's one of the few reasonably priced bags that I found that is wide enough in the shoulders for me. I'm 6 ft, 4 inches tall, and I don't fit into many average bags. The zipper on the sleeping bag hangs up sometimes as well.
That tent is small! If you had to share it with someone, you better be more then just casual friends! But I like the net part. I'm on the Texas Gulf Coast, and we can have mosquitoes 12 months a year. But we also have fire ants, ticks, chiggers, spiders, centipedes and snakes. So one generally needs a sealed net system, or a hammock with bug net.
You have a great sense of adventure, and apparently a good sense of humor as well. Thanks for an entertaining video.
Love your unusual way of living and enjoying watching the videos! ❤😊😊 friendly regards all the way from Croatia!

I love tiny tent weather testing! Thanks for the fun review of this one.
Being able to sit up adds so much flexibility. Low profile tents are basically for sleeping in and nothing else.
Oh no! A love doll! Hehehe. juss kiddin. You are quite lovable! Know that! Chicken Curry looks so good :)
Your friend never shuts up mind. 🫣 Mornings are the bestest. 👍🏻✌🏻🇬🇧
Great little vid and tent but getting a bit worried about you with blow up frank Claire but wot ever floats your boat. Lol your still a star. 🌟
Nice one Claire. That was a great review and the sky looked amazing! I'm 6 ft 2 & so don't think I'd be getting in one of those!
We agree the lack of a vestibule makes these "little" shelters a bit of a squeeze. We used to have the classic Aussie swags, a bit heavier and made of canvas, but as we age, we like a bit of luxury. Our main criteria... where do we make coffee?
As you say, "The Snugpak kept you Safe and Dry"... a good review .... Like you, we like some space and the ability to spread a little. Most of all, to enjoy the adventure - we look forward to rolling into summer.
A few days ago in Australia, we had 40 degrees C, but today, it's 15 degrees and bucketing down, so where did I put my woollies?
wonderful starry skies!
I enjoy your narrative skills. Can listen to your videos all day long.
