What do you guys think.. gimmicky nonsense, or useful multi-purpose bit of kit? I don't think poncho shelters are overly practical but I think this would be great as an emergency hiking shelter. I've got a couple of bad weather camps coming next on the editing pile, and hoping to get out on a lil adventure soon :D Happy New Year Wild Ones! ✨✨ May your adventures be great and your skies be sparkly ✨✨
It's neither fish nor foul. On day walks I carry a cheap poncho I picked up from Flying Tiger that opens out into flat sheet. It has a grommet in each corner so can be pitched as a tarp which I do to shelter from the rain when eating my lunch. Costs a fraction of the of your one and packed away a lot smaller. The material won't stand up to a strong wind but ok for occasional use.
Happy new year, C. 🎉 Hope you & George had a superb festive season. 🙏 Well, gimmicky or not, good question. Personally, I find them very useful as they fit more with the bushcraft side of me these days. Hence Santa brought me the Helikon tex Swagman roll (check it out it's fab if you haven't already) and matching American GI Poncho that toggles on to it. Along with the HT Bergen 18L pack too😃. I still prefer a bivvy and tarp though. It's a difficult one isn't it, as our HT superlite tarp comes in at just 448grms Vs this 640grms I think you said. Add a sea to summit mozzi pyramid at 200 grms with tarp 🤷 and your still under. Or your DD superlite tarp. Horses for courses I guess, for different experiences and environments. But one thing I have found over the years, as you know I'm a complete gear slut 😂 is that each year due to progressive knowledge I carry less and less and am becoming quite the minimalist, even though my purchasing isn't lol. If it were to be an emergency shelter, again, Life Systems do a great emergency shelter and is only 180 grms too from memory, bright orange though, but weighs much less and lives in the bottom of my pack on every day hike. A question I asked myself recently was, if i was to choose one gear set up for life, or bug out circumstance, what would it be? I've reduced it to 3 set ups at the moment 😂 and I'm trying hard to refine. The problem with so much gear is too many options, sleep systems, cook systems, packs. Recently I got the snugpak jungle blanket 660 grms, and jungle sleeping bag 900grms with built in mozi net too. Highly recomendable for your summer excursions and the pack size are very very small. You'd love it. Anti-bacterial fabrics, thin, but shockingly warm sleeping bag. I'd love to learn what your definitive set up would be too? Bet you'd struggle as much as I with it, C. 😂 As one sized doesn't fit all environments, terrains, seasons or circumstances does it. Oh, I got the Wisport SilverFox 2 40L pack too in Coyote, that's serious quality 👌another superb Polish brand. Great video though, good to see you well. One Tigris do some quality gear too. @@Jac70 Random comment reading through😄, but agree, I've got a mini screw bottle gas lantern with that cloth type mantle, it's real small but, gives off a bright light on low gas & also a good bit of heat, sure I could cook over it...!🤔🤣 Got it from Amazon or eBay, average about £15, think I got mine for £12, & comes in a protective orange plastic box, nice...!👍😄

I've purchased a second. I suspended my first one from a ridgeline instead of the pole. I then flew a 5x7 tarp in a diamond configuration making a porch. Since I've picked up a second poncho. Love it as a shelter on day hikes for having a brew and lunch. I think it's a great emergency shelter and rain poncho to have in your day pack. Great video. Cheers from Cape breton Canada 😊

Ooh, I just had to look it up, this is very interesting indeed!! Thanks for sharing, it's another one on my list of potentials to try :D Happy new year to you too ✨
Happy new year Claire, yes I agree it’s more of a survival tent to be kept in the car, did notice that you picked your gas light and turned it on it’s side to read the bottle instructions, with the long flame it will have touched the glass, I think you were lucky it didn’t shatter, be carful. I filled my chefs blowtorch near the hob yesterday won’t bloody do that again, now sporting a new 1 eye brow look. Nice wet looking blog though 👍🇬🇧
Nice vid, when i camp in winter i use boiling water in my stainless steel water bottle, then i put the water bottle into a wool sock then into my sleeping bag, it does the job lol Keep doing your channel love it
I think the second poncho is worthwhile if there are two people and, as you say on a day hike it can make a good lunch/emergency shelter for one. Great video!
Happy New Year and thanks for always sharing a chuckle, as well! I think I'll stick with a good 4-season tent considering the severe extremes in which I tend to photograph... lol 😊 Thanks for sharing this with us, all the same!
Happy new year, and thanks for the video. I have used for years the GateWood Cape from Six Moon designs, which is a poncho you can setup as fully enclosed tent. You can use the inner named Serenity Net Tent from the company, or the one coming with Lanshan 1. Was very happy with this gear when storm was coming, or when wind was too cold. Like in a nest :)
+1 on the Gatewood Cape. That's been my primary ground shelter for 17 years or so. I have the Serenity net inner, but mostly use a light bivy underneath to maximize interior room. It's huge as raingear, but the sides can be folded/snapped up to make it more manageable. I carry a wind jacket that can handle rain for a few minutes when the cape is in shelter mode.
This is above and beyond! If that’s all you got for survival then it will have to do. Thanks for the education and for bravely putting yourself in situations of misery to prove that formidable challenges can be accomplished. Happy New Year! Wishing you safe journeys, peace, good health and good fortune. Happy Trails!
Using a dry bag just big enough, slip the hot water bottle in with a cozy on, should it bust (fingers crossed it won't) you don't get scalded or wet. I tried it and it works. You do have a tarp you could use for the vestibule! Have a great new year Claire.
The Six Moon Designs Gatewood Cape is a better and lighter shelter with all round protection from the weather. More expensive but, in my view, well worth it and you can buy a mesh inner for it. The inner has a zip at the back so the rear space can be accessed from within. I love mine although I use a separate waterproof. I had difficulty using it as a cape for the same reason you did.
Thank you Geoff, a few others have mentioned this one too, tis on my list of potentials to try, looks great with the lil vestibule too. Happy 2024 to you!

Hey there Claire! Now that's certainly one unique poncho shelter for sure. Never seen one that comes with an optional inner before. @@thesunreport : Yes, you are correct. I forgot hedgehogs hibernate. It might be a mole but is more likely a bank vole, given the woodland habitat. Claire might be able to make an enlargement of that clip of video, depending on whether she films in 4k, or not. It would be interesting to find out.
Claire I know you probably get bored with answering this question , but on your journeys across the UK , have you ever found somewhere and thought “ when the zombie apocalypse happens , this is where I’m coming to bug out as nobody would find me “ ? I’m not asking where , but just wondered if you’ve ever found such a place ? TIA 😁
Love it haha well there are a few places.. I think the trouble would be, all us outdoorsy folk would have the same idea 😄 and I likely wouldn't be able to get there, I'm a 4-5 hour drive from the mountains and the roads would be blocked
@@johnnicol64: I think the UK's nuclear subs are based at Faslane, in North-West Scotland. Bound to be a target, so perhaps not the best choice of location for your hideout.
I'd recommend the SMD Gatewood Cape over this knockoff any day. Brilliant innovation for the ultralighter rather than being a knockoff that takes money away from the inventor. Besides, the Gatewood Cape has 360 deg coverage and the serenity net tent (sold separately) fits perfectly in it as well as the SMD Deschutes Tarp (and in many other tarps also). The only thing difficult about the Gatewood cape is it is silicone coated on both sides of the fabric so it wants to slide off you when you're putting it on as a poncho. I fell over backwards wearing it over my pack once and I felt like a turtle on it's back. It took me 20 minutes to get up!! Haha!
I might consider the inner mesh tent with a tarp. I like tarps and hammocks. Tarp up 1st and the last item down & packed in the morning. Rain , no problem , I have a dry area to unpack , relax , & then pack under.
I've got one of those! But, I don't use it for overnight, I use it exactly as you suggested as an emergency shelter, day lunch shelter etc and it's done very well in that over two years now. High Lakeland fells can be very unforgiving in cold/wet/both weather, and having somewhere to throw up, back to the wind, and room for two or three at a squeeze to get out of the worst of it has been great. And it's very light and squidgeable for packing in a rucksack.
You are definitely the prettiest part of the whole setup. Seems more trouble than it's worth. Lantern is a smart idea, i like that. Stay beautiful WildBeare. Thx
Happy New Year Claire. Yes definitely a bit gimmicky but some may like it for rainy summer hikes/camps. It's good to see these different things though so 👍 for a good video.
I have this poncho set. So does my friend. So if the weather is inclement, we put them together. Works very well. I like them quite a bit. Perfect for emergency bags .
For a moment there I had a vision of the Skesis from Dark crystal as I saw this Humped and Caped figure prowling through the woods.. Then I realised all was safe, It was just a Wildbeare.. Whoo Thank goodness.. Only a Wile Beare. What? Anyway Another good video of you roughing it in the woods for the education and entertainment of all including Old Fogeys like me. I normally do not leave comments. I just enjoy watching your videos. But I just want to take the time and tell you thank you for not degrading yourself for viewers. Like other women do in their videos So thank you and keep up the great videos I have learned a bunch of things from you THANK YOU
Purchased one on Amazon about 2 years ago and used it as a simple Little Shelter tent for hiking. I ran into the problem of when it rained there was not enough of a hangover the shelter you from the rain. So I purchased a small 5 x 7 tarp and I cut it so I can mount it on to the velcro tabs on both sides and give myself a nice little overhang. The optional bug net is an absolute necessity here in Alabama. As far as using just that for shelter versus a small single pop-up tent, it's personal preference. Some days I feel like a tarp guy, some days a small Tent Guy. Good content always like watching your videos

Leave it to good ol' One Tigris 👍 I can definitely see this as something worth trying out a few times to see what it's best use would be. At the very least it would make for an awesome emergency shelter. Either way... looks like you had fun using it, and that's what it's all about, eh 👍
As always... stay wild 🌲🐻 (and "sexy as hell" 😉).... -John
Haha thanks John, yes I'm quite liking it, I think it will be lovely for summer :D Hope you're good friend, thank you so much for all of your support throughout 2023, hope 2024 is treating you nice so far! Much love 🐻
@@WildBeare I'm so happy to hear that Claire :) Yeah, I can certainly see it being a great option for your summer stealth camps! It's been a true pleasure following along, showing you support, and watching your channel grow as much as it has throughout 2023! I wish you all of the best for 2024 as well my friend! It's been a great start to the year so far (thanks!). In fact, I'll be posting again this year soon, so I'm excited about that :D Much love 🐻💚
9:44 was that a little mouse running (waddling) out from your tent??
Thesunreport: I've watched it a few times now and I think it is a hedgehog. Cute little animals.
To me it looks a bit small for a hedgehog, and I think they are hibernating at this time of year??. Could be a young one who has woken up though I suppose, I guess we'll never know for sure. @@StevenKeery
I liked the latern, but the poncho tent was definitely interesting. Thanks for sharing Claire.
TIA 😁
I did 10 years ago on Skye , NW Scotland. I am comming here to hide.
Love it haha well there are a few places.. I think the trouble would be, all us outdoorsy folk would have the same idea 😄 and I likely wouldn't be able to get there, I'm a 4-5 hour drive from the mountains and the roads would be blocked
We can all starve in remote landscapes
@@johnnicol64: I think the UK's nuclear subs are based at Faslane, in North-West Scotland. Bound to be a target, so perhaps not the best choice of location for your hideout.
@@StevenKeery Good point .
Haha!
You look like Quasimodo
That hits the nail on the head 😄
I might consider the inner mesh tent with a tarp. I like tarps and hammocks. Tarp up 1st and the last item down & packed in the morning. Rain , no problem , I have a dry area to unpack , relax , & then pack under.
Hello Beautiful Soul. I love how happy you are. I wish more people had your spirit. Stay blessed and keep posting.
I do hope the makers of these products you review are taking note of the pros and cons! Thanks! Great fun👍
These videos make me feel all cosy when I watch them lying in bed at night ☺️
I like that it’s always a surprise to see us lol
Oh hello wild ones lol
You are definitely the prettiest part of the whole setup. Seems more trouble than it's worth. Lantern is a smart idea, i like that. Stay beautiful WildBeare. Thx
Love the lantern and agree, this poncho would be good as an emergency or little break shelter.
One of my faves. Hilarious. You are truly a wilderness warrior. Love your efforts!
Thanks! Happy new year :)
love this for the emergency or lunch shelter
Happy New Year Claire.
Yes definitely a bit gimmicky but some may like it for rainy summer hikes/camps.
It's good to see these different things though so 👍 for a good video.
I use two sides and make a one man teepee. Also works as a hot tent if you leave one door unzipped in that configuration.
What a great adventure with that poncho. ❤ Keep safe Claire.
Holy hunchback 😂 great stuff!
I have this poncho set. So does my friend. So if the weather is inclement, we put them together. Works very well. I like them quite a bit. Perfect for emergency bags .
Hello Claire... je vous souhaite une heureuse année 2024, continuez à nous faire de bonnes vidéos intéressantes et amusantes ! ! ! Salut de France.😘😘😘
Everyone's prettiest winter warmer🤗
Congrats on staying relatively dry, and no weirdos this round!! Bonus!!
I love the learning as you go approach. This is how it is really done!
Love the down to earth approach you have to these things, very refreshing that everything isn't 100% perfectly scripted!
Thanks Bundles and long may you continue to enjoy yourself like this.. Happy New year.
Absolutely love your content ❤️, inspiring others into the wilderness 😊
Wouldnt miss your films for anything claire brilliant 🤗
I normally do not leave comments.
I just enjoy watching your videos.
But I just want to take the time and tell you thank you for not degrading yourself for viewers.
Like other women do in their videos
So thank you and keep up the great videos
I have learned a bunch of things from you
THANK YOU
Purchased one on Amazon about 2 years ago and used it as a simple Little Shelter tent for hiking.
